Monica J. Capano

STRATHAM - Monica J. Capano, 46, of 18 Christie Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a sudden illness.

She was born in Manhattan, N.Y., on Oct. 27, 1956, the daughter of Louis M. and Margaret (York) Bodi of Staten Island, N.Y. She was raised in Staten Island and resided 18 years in Middletown, N.J., before moving to Stratham two years ago.

She worked several years as a teacher’s assistant in the special educational program of the Middletown public school system.

In addition to her parents, family members include her husband of 24 years, Nicholas G. Capano; a daughter, Stephanie L. Capano; and a son, Nicholas G. Capano Jr., all of Stratham; two brothers, Michael Bodi of Chester, Vt., and Louis Bodi of Middletown; a sister, Cynthia Raimondi of Staten Island; and several nieces and nephews.

CAPANO - Monica J. Capano of 18 Christie Lane, Stratham, died Jan. 2, 2003. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael Church in Exeter on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Irving E. Cummings

ELIOT, Maine - A funeral for Irving E. Cummings of Eliot, who died on Dec. 25, 2002 in Portsmouth, N.H., was held on Dec. 30 at his church, the First Congregational Church of Eliot.

Services began the evening before with a Masonic memorial service at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery with the Worshipful Master Jeffrey Farren of Naval Lodge #184 AF&AM officiating.

Also taking part were Kevin Cullen, senior warden; William Bolz, senior steward; Al Locke, junior steward; R.W. Elroy Moulton, P.M.; Howard Moulton, P.M. George McLean, chaplain; and Donald Hands, junior warden.

The funeral was attended by family, friends, neighbors, as well as a number of representatives of the Eliot Fire Department, the former Piscataqua Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and the current Sarah Orne Jewett Chapter O.E.S. of South Berwick, represented by Worthy Matron Priscilla deRochemont, as well as Shirley Alden representing Rainbow.

The service was officiated by the Rev. David Avery and began with a welcome to the church by the Rev. Avery.

A solo by Brenda LaForce was offered. Rev. Avery offered responsive readings, a prayer of invocation, unison readings and scripture readings.

A eulogy was prepared by Mr. Cummings’ son, John, and offered to the congregation by a family friend, Ferris Boardman.

Several hymns were played by, the church organist Emily Haggerty.

In recognition of his years of service to his community as a firefighter, Rev. Avery offered the Firefighter’s Prayer and Prayer of Thanksgiving for his life.

Pallbearers included his grandsons, Michael Burridge, Adam Mason, Eric Cummings; his granddaughter’s husband, Frank Bolonis; a close friend and caregiver, Jeff Johnson; and dear friend and neighbor, Kevin "Woody" Woodlock.

All were invited for a time of sharing and refreshment at Mr. Cummings home following the service. Private burial will take place in the spring at Upper Gloucester Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Col. John M. Kelleher

NORTH HAMPTON - The funeral for Col. John M. Kelleher, USMC (retired), 75, of Stevens Road, who died Dec. 29, 2002, was held Thursday, Jan. 2, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. The Rev. Maurice R. Larochelle, pastor was the celebrant.

Jean Goss was organist and directed the Men’s Choir. J. Tanzer served as cantor. George Rooney proclaimed the readings.

The gifts were presented to the altar by June and Kenneth Fahey. Members of the Holy Name Society provided the altar servers and many members present formed an honor guard outside of the church.

Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Assembly 4th degree of Portsmouth, also provided an honor guard.

Burial followed in the Center Cemetery with the committal service conducted by Rev. Larochelle.

Taps was sounded and the U.S. flag, which covered the casket, was folded by a detachment of Marine personnel and presented to Mr. Kelleher’s widow, Margaret Mary (Manning) Kelleher.

Pallbearers were John Kelleher, Justin Kelleher, Jordan Kelleher, Robert Fahey, John Fahey and Michael Fahey.

Anthony E. Giovannettone

LEE - Anthony E. Giovannettone, 58, of Fisher Brook Farm, 452 Packers Falls Road, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at the Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, after a courageous five year battle with cancer.

He was born in New York City on Dec. 14, 1944, the son of the late Erimino and Assunta (Fiorintino) Giovannettone and was a graduate of the Thomas Edison High School, in Jamaica, New York.

Mr. Giovannettone was a master designer and entrepreneur in the Seacoast area for over 20 years, developing and restoring many of the historical landmarks in the Portsmouth area.

He successfully started and operated many Seacoast businesses in the Portsmouth area throughout the years, including Port City Coffee Roasters, Hill of Beans Café and Master Builders Inc. He was also a master electrician and plumber tery.

He was a longtime member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, actively volunteering his time and expertise in all their local fund-raising and service projects.

Survivors include his wife Kathryn (Wren) Giovannettone of Lee; two sons, Mark Giovannettone of Eliot, Maine and Anthony Giovannettone of Portsmouth; a daughter, Gina Robertson of Margate, Fla; stepsons, Scotty and Christopher Moreau of Lee; stepdaughters, Anika Walker and Katie Bunten-Wren of Lee; sister, Frances D’Antonio of Aberdeen, Md.; a brother, Robert Giovannettone of San Francisco; and several nieces and nephews.

GIOVANNETTONE - Mr. Anthony E. Giovannettone, 58, of Fisher Brook Farm, 452 Packers Falls Road, Lee and formerly of Portsmouth, died January 3, 2003. A memorial visitation will be held at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth, on Monday, 3-4 p.m., with a memorial service following at 4 p.m. Friends invited. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, Centralized Memorial Processing Center, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

CROSSLAND - The funeral for Richard A. Crossland, which was to be today at 10 a.m. at the Community Church in Francestown, has been rescheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at the same church, followed by burial in Hillside Cemetery in Seabrook at 2 p.m.

Alexandra K. Frangos

DOVER - Alexandra K. Frangos, 82, of 10 Sunset Dr. passed away quietly Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at the home of her son Dennis after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Frangos, the daughter of Panayiota "Pauline" (Spiliotis) and Frank Karanicolopoulos, was born in Dover on July, 16, 1920. She attended schools in this city and worked for several years in the shoe factories.

She married the late Costas D. Frangos of Messinia, Greece, in June 1947 and has made her home in Dover ever since. They had three children and they and their families have been her life.

In her later years she enjoyed her garden and walking in her neighborhood and her conversations with her neighbors and acquaintances. She was a lifelong member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

Her husband, Costas, predeceased her in 1990.

She leaves a son, Dr. James Frangos of Dover and his wife, Peggy, and their children, Andy, Lilly and Justin; a daughter, Paula Maskwa of Somersworth and her husband, Paul, and their children Jamie, Katherine, Sarah and Rebecca; a son, Dennis and his wife, Kendra of Somersworth; and a sister, Stella Mitropoulos of Rochester.

Relatives and friends are invited to call from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Locust St., Dover, with the Rev. Constantine Newman, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Annunciation Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 93 Locust St., Dover NH 03820.

Samuel V. Arnold

DOVER - Samuel V. Arnold, III, 76, of 35 Columbus Ave., died Saturday Jan. 4, 2003, at Langdon Place.

Born in Farmington on Jan. 26, 1926, the son of Samuel V. and Leona D. (Crouse) Arnold, II, he was raised in Rollinsford and moved to Dover in 1947. He also wintered in Davenport, Fla., for 10 years.

He entered the U.S. Navy in 1943 and was a veteran of World War II and retired from U. S. Navy Seabee’s Reserves in 1986, having served in Vietnam. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6804 and the Fleet Reserve Association.

Sam was a member of the Bektash Temple of Concord, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Nashua, and the Moses Paul Masonic Lodge No. 96 of Dover.

He was a machinist for the General Electric Co. of Somersworth for 36 years until he retired in 1986. He also owned a horse farm on the Garrison Road for 35 years.

He was a "Jack of all trades," always willing to lend a helping hand, who not only helped his own family, but shared his talents with others.

He is survived by his wife, Marion M. (Gordon) Arnold, of Dover, whom he married in 1950; a son, Samuel V. Arnold IV and his wife, Diana, of East Rochester; two daughters, Donna M. Clark and her husband, Gordon, of Dover, and Sandra A. Burk of Somersworth. He also leaves eight grandchildren, Timothy Ouellette of New Haven, Conn., Chelsea Arnold of East Rochester, Ashlei Burk of Somersworth, Mallory Arnold of East Rochester, Kelley Clark and Katie Clark, both of Dover, Madison Arnold and Savannah Arnold, both of East Rochester; three nephews, Wallace Stevens, Joseph Pichette, Arthur Pichette; and three nieces, Patricia Warburton, Winnona Nagy and Eva Roberge.

He was predeceased by a sister, Leona Dorothy Stevens.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., with the Rev. Wesley Burwell, D. Min, chaplain of Seacoast Hospice, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the funeral. Burial will be in the family lot in Pine Grove Cemetery, Farmington, in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 642 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820.

Henry Louis Van Amburgh

CLERMONT, Fla. - Henry Louis Van Amburgh, 76, of Clermont, Fla., passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. Born in Albany, N.Y., he moved to Clermont in 2000, coming from Portsmouth, N.H., where he spend one-half of the year. He was a broadcast engineer. He was a Protestant and a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne of Clermont and Portsmouth; a son, Todd of Maui, Hawaii,; and a daughter, Suzane E. of Portland, Ore.

Interment will be in Stratham in the spring. Contributions may be made to Stratham Community Church, P.O. Box 143, Stratham, N.H. 03885.

Monica Mary Louise Amman

EXETER - Monica Mary Louise Amman died peacefully on Dec. 27, 2002 at Exeter Healthcare in her 89th year.

Born June 6, 1914 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, she was the daughter of Harold and Gladys (Dearlove) Edwards.

Monica and her late husband, Dr William C. Amman, were longtime residents of the Seacoast and Hampton Beach.

Monica was a woman of gracious style and adventurous spirit, who embraced the world and lived well. Many were touched by her generosity and kind nature.

She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Marguerite Fleming of Calgary, Alberta and her brother, Bernard Edwards of Victoria, B.C. and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and South Africa.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers

Gerald Edwards in 1994 and Jack Edwards in 1998.

AMMAN - Monica Amman, 88, died Dec. 27, 2002 in Exeter. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, on Wednesday Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. Friends invited. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Portsmouth. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St. Portsmouth, NH 03801. Phone: 436-5418.

Ruth Esther E. Westman

ELIOT, Maine - Ruth Esther E. (Stadig) Westman, 69, of Fore Road, died on Jan. 4, 2003 at York Harbor Home.

Born in West Miland, N.H. on May 31, 1933, she was a daughter of Melvin and Alice (Fogg) Stadig and attended local schools. She was a graduate of Eliot High School.

Mrs. Westman was a hairstylist in her beauty shop at her home in Eliot, and a retired U.S. postal worker. She was also a former Girl Scout leader in Eliot.

Ruth was an avid reader and enjoyed cruise-ship travel. She also enjoyed the ocean, especially from Nubble Light in York, and enjoyed animals, especially her cats.

She is survived by her two sons; Scott MacDonald and his wife, Patty, of Rhode Island, and John Westman of Eliot; her grandchildren, Lindsay and Ashley MacDonald; her mother, Alice Stadig of Acton; two brothers, Kent Stadig of Kittery, and Laurie Stadig of Oregon; and one sister Winona Curry, of Denver.

WESTMAN - Ruth E. Westman, 69, of Fore Road in Eliot, Maine, died Jan. 4, 2003. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. Friends may visit with, Mrs. Westman’s family from noon to 1 p.m., before the service, at the J. S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery Maine. Please omit flowers; donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society 1599 Clifton Road, NE Atlanta, GA 30329. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Andrew "A.J." McLaughlin

STRATHAM - Andrew "A.J." McLaughlin, 45, of 163 Bunker Hill Ave., was pronounced dead on arrival at Exeter Hospital after snow blowing at his home on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003.

He was born Jan. 3, 1958, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Thomas and Doris (Holer) McLaughlin. He had resided in Stratham for the last 20 years.

He was employed for the last several years as a propane meter reader for Northern Utilities in Portsmouth.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Marcia (Perkins) McLaughlin; four daughters, Kristin McLaughlin and Sarah McLaughlin, both of Waterford, Conn., and Lauren McLaughlin and Lindsay McLaughlin, both of Stratham; one granddaughter, Amber McLaughlin of Connecticut; his mother; two sisters, Doris McLaughlin of Manchester, Conn. and Mary Ellen McLaughlin of Niantic, Conn. He was predeceased by his father.

There will be no calling hours.

MCLAUGHLIN - Andrew "A.J." McLaughlin of 163 Bunker Hill Ave., Stratham, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 11 at 11 a.m., at the Faith Lutheran Church, 4 Elm St., Exeter. Rev. Steven Bartell will officiate the service. Brewitt Funeral Home of Exeter will be handling the arrangements. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a scholarship fund for his daughters that will be set up at the Community Bank and Trust, 80 Main St., Exeter, NH 03833.
