Adelaide Davie (Galleni)

GILBERT, Ariz. - Adelaide Davie (Galleni), 84, died Dec. 22, 2002, after a brief illness, in Gilbert, Ariz. She was formerly of Seabrook, N.H., and Woburn, Mass.

Adelaide was born June 30, 1918, in Somerville Mass. She had two brothers and a sister, all born and educated in Italy. She was the first in her family to be born in America. Her father was an Italian marble cutter, and many buildings in Boston have his initials on corner stones representing the work he performed.

Her two brothers and several nephews owned and operated an Italian delicatessen/fruit stand for many years. She was raised along with her nieces and nephews, who were only nine to 11 years older than her. When she was 13 years old, her mother had a stroke; one year later, so did her father. She had to leave school to work and take care of them both for the next 20 years.

During these years she was a bakery manager for Stop & Shop grocery store, and later became store manager at a nearby Kennedy Butter & Eggs, during World War II.

Adelaide loved being near water and spent many enjoyable summers with relatives who owned homes in the Marshfield and Cape Cod area. Adelaide enjoyed weekend picnics and always talked about the times she enjoyed dancing to the polka bands, playing bocci, and the rolling of the cheese.

Her mother passed away in 1947; her father one year later. Adelaide married in 1950 and had three children of which only two survived to adulthood. After 13 very difficult years, she found herself as a single mom with two children to raise.

At 46 years old, she obtained her first driver’s license, and worked as a nurse’s aide in nursing homes in the Woburn and Winchester area. She then would manage several deli-type restaurants and donut shops, loving the interactions with customers.

Adelaide decided she really wanted to be a nurse, and after an 18-month course, graduated as a certified nurses’ assistant.

After 10 years of being alone, she met a wonderful man, Evan Davie, and in 1975 remarried. She moved to Acton, Mass., and worked as a nurse at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. She primarily worked on the pediatric unit, where she not only was their nurse but also was their mother to most, including the other nursing staff and the doctors. She assisted the hospital staff and was asked many times to translate in sign language and Italian. She spoke, read, and wrote fluent Italian.

When she and Evan retired, they moved to Seabrook, N.H., where they resided for over 15 years until Evan became ill in 1992 with a brain tumor. Adelaide nursed him at home until he passed away in 1993.

In 1996 Adelaide decided to move to Tempe, Ariz., where Evan and she had spent a few winters.

She volunteered for the American Heart Association, Pyle Center Volunteers of Tempe, and the Salvation Army, where she participated in various volunteer projects, including a group that visited an elementary school on the Gila Indian Reservation, where she helped first-graders learn to read.

Adelaide also belonged to the Song Birds, visiting nursing home and senior centers, entertaining them with song. The Mayor of Tempe at several luncheons recognized her for her dedicated service time.

Adelaide enjoyed riding Amtrak, and took several trips back east, as well as going to San Francisco in 1995 to see her relatives, one of them her sister-in-law, whom she had not seen since 1950.

At the age of 79 she was enjoyed her first ride in an open jeep touring through the mountains of Sedona.

She was in great health up until the last seven weeks. She left us on Dec. 22, 2002, but her spirit will live on in all of us remembering her love of anything Italian, food, music, talking to anyone she met everywhere we went, and her desire to have her kids and grandkids always do their best.

Adelaide’s family includes her late husband, Evan Davie of Seabrook. She was the loving mother of Joyce M. Griffin (Quail) and her husband, Kenward R. Griffin, of Chandler, Ariz., and Myles Thomas Quail and his wife, Donna (Wright), of Littleton, Mass. She was the loving grandmother of Jocelyn and Kenward Griffin of Chandler, Ariz.; stepmother of Diane and Peter Dormitzer of Chelmsford, Mass., and John and Debbie Davie of Burlington, Mass.; step-grandmother of Charles Wright of Wilmington, Mass., Craig Wright of North Attleboro, Mass., David Wright of Littleton, Mass., Corey Dormitzer of Chelmsford, Mass., Stephen and Michael Davie of Burlington, Mass,; and step great-grandmother of Christopher Wright of North Attleboro, Mass., and Christina and Emily Wright of Wilmington, Mass.

A memorial service and interim was held at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary and Cemetery, Chandler, Ariz. Donations in Adelaide’s memory may be made to the Neely Ray Hospice House, 13639 E. Ray Road, Gilbert, AZ 85296; The Salvation Army 40 E. University Drive Tempe, AZ 85281; or a charity of your choosing.
