Robert F. Bate

NEEDLES, Calif. - Robert F. Bate, 82, died at St. Agnes Hospital in Fresno on Jan. 13, 2003.

He was born in Boston, Mass., on June 5, 1920, a son of John L. Bate and Mary A. Gordon Bate. He had been a lifelong resident of Kittery Point, Maine, and Dover, N.H., before moving to Needles. He attended Kittery schools.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy. He retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a machinist.

Survivors include three sons, Robert of Eliot, Maine, John of Needles, and Paul of Little Rock, Ark.; three daughters, Doreen of Huachuca City, Ariz., and Jeanine and Rosemarie of Exeter, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Bate of Farmington, Maine, and James Bate of New Port Richey, Fla.; and one sister, Martha Eaton of Eliot, Maine.

Ida Reddy

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Ida Reddy, 102, died Jan. 20, 2003, at the Hillcrest Commons nursing home in Pittsfield.

She was originally from Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Warrant Officer Adelbert Gagnon, who died in 1955; her second husband, John Reddy, who died in 1990; and her daughter, Imelda Pettibone, who died in 1999.

She is survived by her son, Joseph R. Gagnon and his wife, Hectorine, of Portsmouth, N.H.; granddaughter Linda Pettibone of Pittsfield, Mass.; grandsons Joseph R. Gagnon Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, of Townsend, Mass, Paul E. Gagnon and his wife, Dorita, of Clearwater, Fla., Roland J. Gagnon and his wife, Dawn, of Greenland, N.H., and Everett Pettibone of Yuma, Ariz.; great-granddaughters Sarah and Grace Gagnon; great-grandsons Nicholas, David, and Nathan Gagnon; first cousin Lauretta Byrd of Saugus, Mass.; and sister-in-law Harriet Reddy of New Bedford, Mass.

REDDY - Ida Reddy, 102, of Pittsfield, Mass., died Jan. 20, 2003. A funeral Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Church in Pittsfield, Mass. A memorial Mass will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Portsmouth.

George Christopher Brady

PORTSMOUTH - George Christopher Brady, 44, whose father was a former Portsmouth mayor, died of cardiac arrest on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, after finishing the Boston Prep 16-Miler Road Race.

Born in Boston, Mass., on Jan. 14, 1959, he was a son of the late Arthur F. and Mary Jane Brady, and attended Lady Isle Elementary School, Portsmouth High School and Plymouth State College.

An avid runner, he belonged to the Coastal Athletic Association, where over the past five years he participated in every event. His participation was not limited to running, but also included service and support to the organization.

He was a volunteer with the Portsmouth Recreation Department, where he coached youth basketball and gave time as a referee in the youth soccer league. His involvement in local activities also included the Runner’s Alley Softball Team and the Portsmouth Masters Swim Team. He also enjoyed an enviable golf handicap.

He had been employed for the past 15 years with the Portsmouth Paper Company.

Survivors include his son, Christopher Michael Brady of Fremont, Calif.; his siblings Thomas A. Brown of Portsmouth, Mary Jane Brady Stirgwolt of Salem, Mass., Dr. Elizabeth W. Brady of Simsbury, Conn., Arthur (Ted) Brady III of North Hampton, Matthew W. Brady of Kittery Point, Maine, and Adam W. Brady of Southington, Conn.; nieces Taylor and Erin Brady and Anna, Nellie, and Hazel Stirgwolt.

He was predeceased by a brother, Edward W. Brady.

His running time at the Derry 16-Miler was 2 hours and 17 minutes.

BRADY - George C. Brady, 44, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the South Church on State Street in Portsmouth. Visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Partnership for Breast Care at Hartford Hospital, 85 Seymour St., Suite 709, Hartford, CT 06106.

Pauline Hawkins Welch

PORTSMOUTH - Pauline Hawkins Welch, 88, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Sunbridge of Portsmouth after a period of declining health.

Born on March 25, 1914, in Manchester, she was the daughter of the late Harry Hawkins and Bertha (McAllister) Hawkins Laraba and was graduated from Central High School in Manchester and Hillsboro County Home School of Nursing in Goffstown.

She worked as a nurse for many years at Portsmouth Hospital, ending her nursing career at retirement as a maternity room nurse. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and enjoyed bowling and playing cards with friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Welch; and a daughter, Janis Welch, of Portsmouth

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jane Welch of Chichester; and several nieces and nephews.

WELCH - Pauline Hawkins Welch, 88, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, 129 Miller Ave., Portsmouth. Friends are invited. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Visiting Nurses Assoc., 29 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, NH 03862. Arrangements are by J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel.

Winthrop D. Comley

HAMPTON FALLS - Winthrop D. Comley, 87, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the Medway Country Manor Nursing Home, in Medway, Mass.

He was born in Newburyport, Mass., on April 12, 1915, the son of the late Winthrop and Helen (Delano) Comley.

He was a graduate of Newburyport, Mass., High School and of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1937 and a master’s degree in 1938.

He worked as a chemical engineer for the Lummus Corporation, New York, N.Y., traveling extensively in North America and Europe and later for Stone & Webster of Boston, Mass., retiring in 1985 after 25 years of service. His expertise was in heat transfer in power plants, including heat transfer from nuclear power plants.

He was a member and served as the chairman of the Heat Transfer Research Institute. He also served on the board of directors of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and on former Gov. John H. Sununu’s Commission for the Evacuation of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. He was a representative for the town of Hampton Falls on the Southeast Regional Solid Waste District.

He moved to Hampton Falls in 1984 from Atkinson; prior to that he lived in Harvard, Mass. He was a former member of the Wentworth By The Sea Country Club.

He was the husband of the late Mary-June (Bowes) Comley, who died Oct. 25, 2001.

Family members include one daughter, Marcia D. Boeing of Millis, Mass.; one son, Kevin D. Comley of Camden, S.C.; four grandchildren, Carl D. Boeing, Grant D. Comley, Garett C. Comley, and Chancellor J. Comley; and a cousin, Helen Katherine Flynn Garett of Newburyport, Mass.

COMLEY - Winthrop D. Comley, 87, of Hampton Falls, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the West View Cemetery, Hampton Falls. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. If desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 10 Ferry St., Suite 427B, Concord, NH 03301.

MURRAY - Theresa Murray, 86, formerly of 245 Middle St., died Jan. 24, 2003. At her request, a graveside service will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery, at a date to be announced. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth, NH 03801. Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth.

James J. Childs

YORK - James J. Childs, 71, of 2 Old Chase’s Pond Rd. died Monday, Jan. 27 at Harbor Home.

He was born on Jan. 31, 1931, in Livermore Falls, the son of Charles P., Sr. and Laura (McElhiney) Childs and was a graduate of York High School. He served as an Army Paratrooper during the Korean War.

Mr. Childs was a pipe fitter and inspector at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the York Street Baptist Church. James was a member of the Masons, the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the (MOLES); Maine Obsolete Auto League. He had wintered in Winter Haven, Fla., for 14 years.

He was predeceased by his father, Charles P. Childs, who died in March 1997, and by a brother, Kenneth L. Childs who died in 1935.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Nichols) Childs of York; his mother, Laura Childs of York; four sons, James, Jr. and Larisa of Franklin, Mass., Kenneth and Debbie of Charleston, S.C., Stephen of Fayetteville, N.C., and John and Shirley of Epping, N.H.; one daughter, Linda and Ray Demers of Lisbon; one step-daughter, Wanda Kezar of North Berwick; four brothers, Charles P. Childs, Jr. of Richardson, Texas, Robert Childs of Bangor, Gerald Childs of Barrington, N.H., and Timothy Childs of Alaska; eight sisters, Patricia Zenger of Portsmouth, Laura Kincaid of Visalia, Calif., JoAnn Ross of Hermitage, Tenn., Barbara Nasuti of Dover, N.H., Delores Belanger, Sandra Vano and Gail Childs all of York, and Brenda Barstow of Rochester, NH; and eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

CHILDS - James J. Childs, of Old Chase’s Pond Rd., York, died Jan. 27 in York. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30, in the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of York, 15 Hospital Dr., York or the York Street Baptist Church, 61 York St., York, 03909. Arrangements by Lucas and Eaton Funeral Home, York.

Orin E. Ball Jr.

ELIOT, Maine - Funeral services for Orin Emery Ball Jr., who died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, were held Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the Eliot Methodist Church, with the Rev. Ronald F. Messer officiating.

In attendance were members of the church, members of the Eliot Lions Club, headed by John Lippincott, and many friends and neighbors. John Lippincott spoke of Mr. Ball’s many achievements in the Lions Club, including 20 years of perfect attendance. The homily was given by the Rev. Messer.

Following the service, a time of fellowship was held in Fellowship Hall hosted by the ladies of the church.

Burial will be in the spring at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, at a time to be announced.

Services were under the direction of the Wilson-Cooper Funeral Home, 21 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Kenneth C. Clement

KITTERY, Maine - Kenneth Clifford Clement, 86, of George Street in Kittery Maine died Sunday January 26, 2003 at Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center in North Berwick.

Born in Westford, Mass., on January 25, 1917, he was a son of William and Viola (Nichols) Clement. Mr. Clement graduated from Nashua (N.H.) High School and Nashua Business School. He moved to Kittery, Maine in 1941.

Mr. Clement worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the Industrial Relations Office as personnel supervisor. While at the shipyard, he was also the head of Personnel Health Service and programs for the American Red Cross. He retired in 1974 from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard after 36 years of service.

Upon retirement he and his wife, Helen, wintered for 28 years in Lake Whales, Fla., at the Saddle Bag Lake Resort.

He was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Parish in Kittery and a member of the Men’s Society.

Mr. Clement was a great sports enthusiast. In his early years, he was active as a hockey player in Chelmsford, Mass., and later managed a local hockey team in Nashua. While in Kittery, he coached Little League for four years and was a member of the "Has Beens" Navy Yard softball team and Navy Yard Golf League. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins.

Mr. Clements will be missed by those who knew and loved him. They include his wife of 59½ years, Helen (Costantino) Clement, of Kittery; two daughters, Diane Clement Painchaud and her husband, Gerald of York, Maine; and Susan Clement Paulson and her husband, Rick, of Buffalo, N.Y.; one brother, Gilbert Clement of Nashua; two sisters, Joyce Clement of Merrimack, N.H.; and Nancy Ray of Amston Lake, Connecticut, his brother in law James Hennessey of Connecticut; and sister-in-law, Marion Clement, of Nashua; and sister-in-law Sarah Stapanon of Nashua. He was predeceased by his sister Enid Hennessey and brothers Leon Clement, Melvin Clement and Earle Clement. He will be missed by many nieces and nephews, as well as the staff of Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center.

CLEMENT - Kenneth C. Clement, 86 of George Street in Kittery died Jan. 26, 2003, in North Berwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday Feb. 1, 2003, at 11 a.m. at his church, St. Raphael Parish Church on Whipple Road in Kittery. A time of sharing and refreshment to visit with Mr. Clement’s family will be held directly following the service in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Activity Fund at the Varney Crossing Nursing Care Center, 47 Elm Street, North Berwick, Maine 03906. Burial will take place in Saint Louis De Gonzague Cemetery in Nashua in the spring. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.

Arthur W. Fernald

PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Arthur W. Fernald, 75, of 23 Sheffield Road, were held on Saturday from the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services held at the North Church Parish House Chapel in Portsmouth.

The Rev. Dawn Shippee, senior pastor, officiated. June Parker was organist, playing several of the family’s favorite hymns. A poem of remembrances, written by daughter Marcia, and words of happy memories, written by granddaughter Genna, were both read by Genna during the service.

In attendance were members of the church and representatives from the Portsmouth School Department, Portsmouth Public Works Department, Portsmouth Garden Club and the Morley Co.

Everyone was invited to a luncheon and social gathering following the service at the parish house, put on by the North Church women.

Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, in the spring. Honorary bearers were Paul Geraci, James Marchese, Tom Broadhurst, Vincent Marchese Sr., Robert V. Fernald, Ralph Woodman, John Reardon and Bud Polazzi.

Maryjane (Stumpf) Williams

PORTSMOUTH - Maryjane (Stumpf) Williams, 87, of 903 Middle Street, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was born in Barbarton, Ohio, on May 24, 1915, the daughter of Edward F. and Frances (Wolfe) Stumpf.

Mrs. Williams was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in Ohio and Katherine Gibbs College in New York City, N.Y.

She had been employed for over 20 years for George A. Dodge, MD as a medical assistant.

Mrs. Williams was a member of St. John’s Church in Portsmouth and a member of the Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of the Eastern Star in Portsmouth.

She was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, C. Richard Williams of Portsmouth; two sons, C. Richard Williams Jr. and his wife, Mary of Rye, and Gregory L. Williams and his wife, Gail of Rocklin, Calif.; a daughter, Maryjane W. Seeley of Dover; six grandchildren, C. Richard Williams III of Greenland, Maryjane W. Bandach of Dover, Tracey W. Coleman of Maine, Aimee Richards of Rochester, Kyle G. Williams of Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Tristan E.R. Williams of Rocklin, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and five nieces and nephews.

WILLIAMS - Maryjane (Stumpf) Williams, 87, of 903 Middle Street, Portsmouth, died Jan. 27, 2003. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Woodstock, Vt., with interment in the family plot at the Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Rivermouth Chapter No. 54, Order of the Eastern Star c/o Marianne Flanders, 188 Ocean Rd, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Wilbur Fiske "Willie" Ellsworth

KENSINGTON, N.H. - Wilbur Fiske "Willie" Ellsworth, 73, of Kensington, died peacefully at home on Jan. 28, 2003.

Willie was born in Ipswich, Mass., on Nov. 19, 1929. Willie’s devotion to agriculture led him to serve in the farming industry for over 55 years. For approximately 13 years, he served as the Rockingham County Farm manager, one of New Hampshire’s last working county farms to raise livestock and produce for the Rockingham County facilities.

As founder and owner of Green View Landscaping and Excavation, he and his wife, Bonita, dedicated over 20 years to a prosperous and diversified company based in Kensington. Willie’s memory will lay forever with every planted seed and the soil of our earth of which he gave so much of his life and devotion.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Bonita (Seavey) Ellsworth of Kensington; devoted father of two sons, Mark Ellsworth of Brentwood and Walter Ellsworth of Rochester; three daughters, Linda Smith of Rochester, Michelle (Aucoin) Regna of Ingleside, Ill., and Rebecca (Aucoin) Smith of Kensington; one brother, Charles Ellsworth of Burlington, Mass.; and sister Helen Buckley of Raymond; loving grandfather of eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Willie was predeceased by four siblings, one brother and three sisters.

ELLSWORTH - Wilbur F. "Willie" Ellsworth, 73, of Kensington, N.H., died Jan. 28, 2003. Services will be held at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter, on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Spring burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Kensington.
