Joan L. Chappell
November 29, 1931 - June 16, 2003

Somersworth: Joan L. Chappell, 71, of Rowland Street, Somersworth, died on June 16, 2003, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, after long period of failing health.

She was born in Germantown, Philadelphia, PA on November 29, 1931. Her parents were the late Ednah Mae (Carlisle) Moore and George Moore, both of whom were natives of Philadelphia, PA. Her education was predominantly in private schools having attended Friends Select School in Philadelphia and was graduated in 1949 from Stevens School in Mount Airy, Philadelphia, PA.

Joan undertook a two-year training course as a Medical Laboratory Technician at Germantown Hospital. Upon graduation she worked at that hospital and later in a private physician's office. She married John S. Chappell on December 1, 1951 in Middletown, NY. The couple moved to Norman Oklahoma as her husband extended his graduate education in psychology. She worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician at University Hospital in Oklahoma City until the birth the couple's first child, Steven in 1955. A second son, Michael Alan was born in 1957 but died at three weeks of age. Kristine Anne was born in late summer 1958. Mrs. Chappell returned to Medical Technology work in the local hospital in Norman Oklahoma until the family moved to Hays, Kansas where her husband taught for two years at Fort Hays Kansas State College. She did not work for the two years the family resided in Kansas.

Upon moving to Lafayette Indiana allowing her husband to complete his PhD degree, Mrs. Chappell worked at Home Hospital for a brief period before working at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in the Clinical Laboratory as a technician.

Mrs. Chappell delivered her second living son, Eric John as her husband completed his doctoral degree on February 9, 1967 after which the family moved to Wolfeboro where her husband began teaching and consulting in Mental Health Clinics as a psychologist. Mrs. Chappell worked as a technician part time at Huggins Hospital for two years before transferring to a private physician's office where she worked until 1993.

Mrs. Chappell began her Church Organist career in 1969 at the First Congregational Church in Wolfeboro. She joined the NH chapter of the American Guild of Organist during her thirteen-year tenure with First Church in Wolfeboro. Her activities with the NH chapter eventually led her to being elected to the top post as Dean of the Chapter in 1991, a post she held for three years. While living in Wolfeboro she became the organist at the First Congregational Church of Farmington, NH.

Love of music, which she had abandoned for 10 years while supporting her husband during his educational quest, re-emerged when she auditioned on a pipe organ in Wolfeboro with much quaking and trepidation. Much to her amazement her skills were eagerly employed at the First Congregation Church. During her thirteen years on the organ bench at Wolfeboro, Mrs. Chappell expanded her musical skills as she developed the musical artistry to play from the tried and true organ literature of Bach, Mozart and Brahms but also selections from contemporary music such as The Beatles and Jesus Christ Superstar. The conservative congregation responded with praise and affection. When she resigned from the organ bench in Wolfeboro, Mrs. Chappell had an opportunity to tour and play for many churches sampling "what other organ folk do." On one occasion she played for the Congregational Church in Farmington NH and eventually accepted the request to become the official organist. Thus began an eighteen-year tenure until her retirement in May 2003. The Farmington Congregation celebrated her years of musical services on their behalf on June fifteenth. Unfortunately her final illness prevented her attendance, but the Pastor, Susan Goodwin and Chairman of the Music Committee Shirley Marble brought to her hospital room the portable evidence of the event. Mrs. Chappell was able to read all the signatures covering the two cards of best wishes and see the fruits of the money tree given in appreciation for her years of faithful service.

Soon thereafter she slipped from our presence as her brave and generous heart slowly gave in to the struggles of a life filled with love, joy and appreciation for those who have loved her so dearly.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years; two sons, Steven G. Chappell and his wife Patti of Somersworth and Eric "Bucky" J. Chappell and his partner James Fauntleroy of Dorchester, MA; one daughter, Mrs. Kristine Anne Arai and her husband Katsu of Lake Forest, CA; five grandchildren; 4 nieces and one nephew.

Memorial services will be held at the Farmington Congregational Church on Saturday August 9, 2003 at 3:00pm with the Reverend Susan Goodwin, pastor, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, 655 Central Avenue, Dover, NH and Oyster River Crematory, 2 Concord Road, Lee, NH.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the NH Chapter of the American Guild of Organists Scholarship Fund, Treasurer Wayne D. Ashford, PO Box 96, North Hampton, NH 03862; Somersworth Rescue Squad, Attention Chief Paul Vallee 195 Maple Street, Somersworth, NH 03878; Women's Fellowship of Farmington Congregational Church, Pleasant Street, 03835; or to the charity of one's choice.
