Adrien Chasse

Adrien Chasse, Fire chaplain

ROCHESTER - Adrien N. Chasse, 74, of Rochester, died in the comfort of his home and surrounded by family on March 5, 2004, from cancer.

He was born Dec. 24, 1929, in Somers-worth, the son of Noel C. and Annie Curran. A graduate of Somers-worth High School, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a submariner in Division 1-34, Portsmouth. For 16 years, he served as a district executive for the Boy Scouts of America at various locations throughout New England. He was later employed at General Electric, retiring in 1989.

During his retirement, he volunteered in many different organizations, receiving numerous awards. He was a state chaplain for the NH American Legion and holder of the Legion of Honor, presented by the Chapel of Four Chaplains. He was a communicant of Holy Rosary Church and a member of the Greater Rochester Interfaith Council. Most recently he served as chaplain of both the Rochester and Somersworth fire departments.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Florence (Marie T.) Gagne; daughter, Claire Karnehm of Norwood, Mass.; daughter, Celeste Reid; son-in-law, David; grandsons, Andrew and Daniel of Derry; daughter, Camille Upson; son-in-law, Larry; grandchildren, Brad and Gretchen of Newington; son, Charles Chasse; daughter-in-law, Terry; granddaughter, Angela of Sanford, Maine; son, James Chasse; and granddaughters, Rebecca and Jessica of Gulfport, Mich.; brother, Dr. Paul P. Chasse of Somersworth; sister, Pauline Rodier of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Frances Bickford Jagielski

Mary Frances Bickford Jagielski - 63, 0f 7 Washburn Court, Somersworth, died Monday March 1, 2004 at the Wentworth Douglass Hospital.

Mary was born in South Berwick, Me. on June 4, 1940, the daughter of Edward F. and Catherine Aileen (Parsons) Mulligan.

Mary worked as the activity assistant at St. Ann’s Health care until her retirement. She moved to Somersworth 4 years ago. She enjoyed gardening in her flower garden. Mary was a very dedicated wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Anthony Jagielski; Mary is survived by her 6 children, Chester E. Bickford III of Dover, Dale C. Bickford of Milton, NH, James T. Bickford of Gonic, NH, Shane Bickford of Somersworth, Tammy Wynn of Dover and Bambi Bickford of Dover; 7 brothers: Edward C. Mulligan of Somersworth, Francis A. “Frank” Mulligan of Dover, Michael Mulligan of Gallop, N.M., James Mulligan of West Lebanon, ME, Thomas Mulligan of Dover, Charles Mulligan of Rollinsford, Peter Mulligan of Rollinsford; 7 sisters: Catherine Landry of Salem, Aileen West of Dover, Kathleen Thorner of Dover, Margaret Estee of Scarborough, ME, Maureen Jones of Dover, Charleen Creighton of Dover and Colleen Dean of Dover; 9 grandchildren: Kera Wynn of Dover, Elizabeth Boulanger of Fla., Nicolas Bickford of Rochester, Jedediah Wynn of Dover, Natasha Bickford of Wolfboro, NH, Mariah Bickford of Dover, Kaylah Bickford of Dover, Cody Bickford of Hampton and Kelsey Bickford of Somersworth; also her Uncle Dr. James Mulligan, of Natick, Mass. and her Aunt Carolyn Anton of Old Orchard Beach, Me.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Carolyn M. Murray

Dover, NH – Carolyn M. Murray, 39, of 708 Central Ave., died Friday February 27, 2004 at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

Born in Worcester, MA on December 11, 1964 the daughter of Charles W. and Ann F. (Donoghue) Murray. She was a 1982 graduate of Burncoat Senior High School and received her Associate's Degree from the Quinsigamond Community College both in Worcester and her Bachelors of Science in Accounting from the Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH.

She moved to Dover from Worcester in 1990 and has been employed in the accounting department at Liberty Mutual.

Carolyn was a communicant of St. Mary Church.

She is survived by her parents Charles W. and Ann F. Murray of Somersworth, two sons Timothy R. Murray of Dover, Thomas J. Murray and his wife Jessica of Somersworth, infant daughter Kayla M. Murray of Dover, a sister Mary F. Murray of Somersworth, a brother Rev. Pius C.W. Murray, C.S.S. of White Plains, NY and her former husband Timothy R. Tripaldi with whom she lived.

In lieu of flowers memorials in her name may be made to an education fund being established for her daughter Kayla, C/O Mr. & Mrs. C. W. Murray, 17 Guy St. Somersworth, NH 03878.

Donald W. Whinnem

Donald W. Whinnem, 53, formerly of Somersworth died March 3, 2004 at Riverside Rest Home in Dover following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Whinnem was born on January 20, 1951 in Hartford, CT the son of the Donald Y. Whinnem and Helen (Shea) Whinnem. Don leaves behind many friends and loving family who will miss him dearly.

Family members include; his wife, Susanne (Strempfer) Whinnem of Somersworth; one son, James D. Whinnem of Somersworth; one daughter, Julie M. Whinnem of Somersworth; his mother of Connecticut; one brother, Richard Whinnem of Connecticut; one sister, Cory Baron of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father and by one brother, Billy Whinnem.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date in Connecticut.

Sandra Bright
SOMERSWORTH - Sandra L. Bright, 54, of 11 South St., died Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover after a period of failing health.

She was born on Sept. 10, 1949, in Dover, the daughter of William and Gloria (Clement) Ainsworth. She was educated in Dover Schools and had resided in this area all her life.

She had been employed at South Berwick Shoe Co. She had also been a bartender at the Lebanese Social Club in Dover.

She was the widow of Robert Bright. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Tiffany Caron.

Survivors include four sons, Rosaire Caron of Berwick, Maine, John Caron of Somersworth, Paul Caron of Wakefield, and Thor Caron of Somersworth; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Frederick Ouimette of South Berwick, Maine, and William Ainsworth of East Rochester; four sisters, Louise Dobson of Hampton, Carol Plaisted of Dover, Margaret Krupski of Dover, and Sheila McDonald of Lee.

Rolande Carter
SOMERSWORTH - Rolande Carter, 90, formerly of 74 W. High St., died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at St. Ann Healthcare Center in Dover after a period of failing health.

She was born in Somersworth on June 21, 1913, the daughter of Francois and Clementine (Doyon) Vachon. She was educated in Somersworth Schools and had resided here until moving to St. Ann's six years ago.
She had been employed as a fancy stitcher at Dover Shoe Co. for 29 years.

She was the widow of Warren Carter, who died in 1983. Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. Ann's Home, Dover Point Road, Dover, NH 03820 or to the charity of one's choice.

Albert "Al" R. Elwell
Durham- Albert "Al" R. Elwell, age 67, of Davis Avenue, died Friday March 12, 2004.

He was born in Lewiston, Maine on March 5, 1937, the son of Sumner J. and Fleurange (Bernard) Elwell. He attended schools in Auburn, Maine, graduating from Edward Little High School, Class of 1955. He attended the University of Michigan and earned a Bachelors degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1960, followed by Masters and Ph.D. degrees in education from Michigan State University in 1961 and 1964, respectively.

His rewarding career in post-secondary education spanned sixteen years as the Director, University Office of Testing and Evaluation Services at Western Michigan University; Research Institute Director, Coordinator for Educational Research and Evaluation and Assistant Professor of Education at the University of New Hampshire; and Institutional Research Specialist for the Office of the Chancellor, University System of New Hampshire.

Mr. Elwell also served as a Contract Employee, Project Manager and Special Programs Coordinator, and Senior Analyst for several federal agencies in Washington, DC, Arlington, VA, and Cambridge, MA.

Locally he was well known for his service as a chairperson and member of the Oyster River School Board, chairperson and member of SAU #56 Executive Board, and member of the Executive Committee of the NH School Boards Association. For fifteen years, he was employed as an Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAU#56 (Somersworth, Rollinsford and Oyster River) and SAU #5 (Oyster River Cooperative School District), retiring in October 1999. More recently, he served as a Facilitator for the NH Best Schools Leadership Institute, providing assistance to the BSLI program of the Andover (NH) Elementary-Middle School.

Mr. Elwell was a charter member of the Durham-Great Bay Chapter of Rotary International. He was a fixture at UNH men's and women's ice hockey games, logging 22 years as an office official, and also volunteering as timer for NHIAA competitions in hockey and basketball. In his earlier days, he was an umpire for ORYA and Babe Ruth baseball programs. He was a former member of the Board of Elders and choir at Bethany Christian Church, Greenland. Since 2001 he was a member of the Yankee Clipper Chorus, Portsmouth, NH Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), also serving as Chapter Quartermaster, Secretary and President.

Throughout his years of professional and volunteer work, Al was highly regarded for his open-mindedness, his sympathetic ear, and the consistent integrity with which he worked to improve his community.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hubbard Klippenstein of Durham, two daughters, Sharon Elwell Arkell of Dover and Amy Klippenstein of Ashfield, MA, and three sons, David Elwell of Worcester, MA, Nathan Klippenstein of Framingham, MA, and Keith Elwell of Ashland, MA. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Adam, Alex and Bryan Arkell of Dover, NH, and Hannah Elwell of Worcester, MA, a brother, Sumner B. Elwell of Gray, ME, and a nephew, Michael Elwell of Stratham, NH.

He was predeceased by his wife, Linda Estelle Bowden in 1982 and a brother, Paul.

Michael Goodwin
SOMERSWORTH - Michael Thomas Goodwin, 45, of 149 High St., died suddenly Monday, March 8, 2004, at his home.

He was born on May 21, 1958, in Rochester, the son of David and Stella (Mound) Goodwin. He was raised in Berwick, Maine, and had attended schools there.

He had been employed at Libby's Bar & Grill in Durham.
He was a member of the Son's of the American Legion of Dover.
He enjoyed camping and sitting around the campfire. He was a great father and step-father and a very loving husband.

Survivors include his wife Debra (Parker) Goodwin of Somersworth; two sons, David Goodwin of Somersworth, Christopher Goodwin of Berwick; two sisters, Lucretia Gagnon of Worcester, Mass., and Debbie Catino of Berwick; two stepsons, Christopher Paradis of Rollinsford and Roger Paradis of Somersworth; a stepdaughter, Melinda Paradis of Somersworth; three half-brothers, Tom Goodwin of Rochester, Larry Goodwin of Arizona and William Goodwin of Colorado; two half-sisters, Janet Goodwin of North Berwick, Maine, and Joannie Goodwin of Worcester, Mass; six grandchildren, Britany, Brooke, Bradley, Zachery Kennedy and Mariah; and many nieces and nephews.

Spring burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorials may be made to Michael's wife, Debbie, 149 High St., Somersworth, NH 03878.

Donald McKay

SOMERSWORTH - Donald F. McKay Jr. passed away on March 17, 2004, at Wentworth Douglass Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 8, 1940, in Providence, R.I., and raised in Berlin, N.H., he was the son of Donald F. McKay Sr. and Mary (Landers) Carr.

He was a graduate of Berlin High School and moved to Somersworth in 1959. He was employed with the Free Press Newspaper, then went to Foster's Daily Democrat for 13 years. He was a member of the Somersworth Fire Department from 1974 to 1980. He will be most remembered as the owner of McKay's Variety at Green and Franklin streets in Somersworth for more than 20 years. Here he made many friends and contributed to the community.

He was predeceased by his son, Douglas McKay, in April of 1993.
He is survived by his children, Brian and his fiancée, Kathy Walsh and her daughter, Amanda Walsh of Somersworth; Wayne and his wife, Leann McKay of Somersworth; Brenda Wilder and her sons, Matthew Wilder and Timothy Wilder; Barry McKay and his son, Cody, of Rochester; and Timothy and his wife, Kim and daughter, Erika, of Pennsylvania and his daughters, Krystal and Monika of Tampa, Fla. He also leaves his grandson, Nicholas Dore of Biddeford, Maine; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Richard Carr, of Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Sandy Domina and her husband, Donald of Ellington, Conn., Deborah Benning and husband, Joseph, of Lyndenville Vt., and Laurie Carr of Lancaster; three brothers, Michael Carr and wife, Rachel, of Bellingham, Wash., William Carr and wife, Mary, of Derby, Vt., Richard Carr and wife, Susan, of Ottsville, Pa.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He will be greatly missed by his faithful companion and grand dog, Leah.
Calling hours will be on Thursday, March 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Roberge Funeral Home on High Street in Somersworth. There will be no funeral services.

Mildred Roy

SOMERSWORTH - Mildred T. Roy, 90, of 57 High St., died Sunday, March 7, 2004, at her home after a period of failing health.

She was born May 19, 1913, in Lewiston, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Mary (O'Brien) Gilbert.

She had resided in Somersworth since 1945. She had been employed for many years at Tiara Footwear, retiring in 1975.

She was the widow of Alphie Roy, who died in 1976. She was also predeceased by a son, Cpl. Gerald Roy, who died in 1957; and a great-grandson, Ryan Bruno-Moulton, who died in 1994.

Survivors include one son, Robert Roy and his wife, Peggy, of West Stewartstown; one daughter, Jeannette Bruno and her husband, Thomas, of Berwick, Maine; four grandchildren, Robert Roy, Michelle Huckins, Wendy Moulton and Kristen Bruno; and eight great-grandchildren, Nicole, Ashley, BreAnna, Hunter, Ciera, Hailey, Emily and Linsey.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Irene M. Gillis

SOMERSWORTH - Irene M. Gillis, 74, of 620 Tri City Road, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital.

Born June 12, 1930, in South Berwick, Maine, she was the daughter of Raoul and Alma (Dube) Roberge.

She had spent the last five months in Somersworth after living in Rochester for the past 20 years. She was employed at many different local shoe shops in the area. She had been a member of the Moose Club for the last 10 years and enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, George Gillis of Somersworth; two sons, Michael Gillis and his wife, Rena, of Rochester, and Geoffrey Gillis and his wife, Susan, of Lebanon, Maine; daughter, Sharon Purvis and her husband, Douglass, of Acton, Maine, mother, Alma Roberge of Dover; two sisters, Ora Houde and her husband, Roland, of Eliot, Maine and Louise Campagna and her husband, Frank, of Florida; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is predeceased by her father, Raoul Roberge.

Alice Louise Landry

SOMERSWORTH - Alice Louise Landry, 91, formally of Indigo Hill Road, died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at Riverside Rest Home in Dover, NH.

She was born on August 29, 1913, the daughter of Fredrick and Alice (Lufkin) Stone in Peabody, MA.

She was an Office Manager for Goodspeed Insurance Agency in Cape Osterville, MA for 25 years, retiring at age 79. She was a member of the Beach Plum Quilters of Harwich, MA, making several quilts; a member of the Insurance Women’s Association; and a member of the Harwich Congregational Church. She was known for her delicate embroideries, making dated plaques for all of her grandchildren. She loved to paint pictures, which are displayed in the family’s homes and she loved to knit.

She is survived by her son, Richard Landry of Biddeford, ME; her daughters, Karen Landry of Haverhill, MA and Carolyn Billas of Rochester, NH; her twelve grandchildren; Twenty-four great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two nieces and one nephew.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert E. Landry in 1982.
