NORTHFIELD – Erica Smith, 27, died April 17, 2007, from injuries sustained in a car accident.
She was born Dec. 4, 1979, in Concord. She graduated from Concord High School and attended New Hampshire Technical Instituted in Concord.

She was employed as a business analyst for Lincoln Financial in Concord, and she lived in Northfield.

She was a member of the Rainbow Girls of America. She loved Superman, crafts, music, karaoke and dancing at Szechaun Garden.

Family members include a son, Isaac Smith of Northfield; her mother, Janice Alarie, her father and stepmother, Ronald and Bonnie Martin of Belmont; her stepfather, Michael Alarie of Concord; a sister, Jillian Alarie of Concord; three stepsisters, Wendy Caldon of Warner, Stephanie Kraft of Franklin and Tammy Alarie of Independence, Mo.; a grandmother, Marjorie Colby of Concord; a companion, Thomas King; her son’s father, Michael Smith of Hillsborough; and aunts and uncles and many cousins. MARJORY M. SWOPE
CONCORD – Marjory M. Swope, 66, of Concord died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association’s Hospice House after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Orange, N.J., to Dr. Virgil and Edith (Rae) Mason.

A graduate of the Morristown- Beard School and Mount Holyoke College, she married John F. Swope in 1962. The couple moved to Concord the following year.

In addition to raising three children, Mrs. Swope was involved in numerous civic organizations as well as city government. She ran the League of Women Voters office for a number of years, served on the Concord school board from 1975 to 1981 and was a member of the city council for 11 years prior to her resignation earlier this month.

Her greatest passion was for environmental preservation.

She was a member of the Concord conservation commission for more than 30 years and served as executive director of the New Hampshire Association of Conservation Commissions from 1981 to 2006. She recently received several awards for her conservation work, including an Environmental Merit Lifetime Achievement Award from the Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Sarah Thorne Conservation Award from the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

Mrs. Swope was an avid reader, especially of mysteries.

An amateur violinist, she was a longtime member of the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra and, more recently, indulged her love of Scottish music as a member of the Strathspey and Reel Society.

She also enjoyed gardening and sea kayaking at her summer residence in Woods Hole, Mass. Family members inlcude her husband, John, of Concord; a sister, Dr. Janet Mason of Cave Creek, Ariz.; and three children, Kristin of Framingham, Mass., Kevin of Wayland, Mass., and John G. of Staunton, Va.

HELEN FRARY
CONCORD – Helen (Stone) Frary, 89, of Concord, died April 13, 2007.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles S. Frary Jr.

Family members include children, Charles S. Frary III and his wife, Harriet, of Norwell, Mass., and Ruth F. Montgomery and her husband, John, of LaPlace, La.; grandchildren, Beth and Steve Deschenes of Lunenburg, Mass., Faith and Jason Salter of Ayer, Mass., and Matthew and Robbie Frary of Los Angeles; and four greatgrandchildren.

JOYCE M. QUINTAL
EPSOM – Joyce M. (Perkins) Quintal, 70, formerly of Plaistow, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at the Villages Hospice House, Lady Lake, Fla.

She was born Dec. 10, 1936, in Haverhill, Mass., to the late Edwin C. and Lillian (Smart) Perkins, Sr.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mrs. Quintal graduated from Haverhill High, class of 1954. She attended the University of New Hampshire and Northern Essex Community College studying early childhood education. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Haverhill, and its Ladies’ Auxiliary.

For four years she was employed at the Pollard School as an Educational Assistant. She was also employed at Sweet Hill Kindergarten for several years.

Mrs. Quintal owned and operated Pre-School Time in Plaistow for more than 14 years. She and her husband retired full time to Florida in 1990.

While in Florida, she was a member of Orange Blossom Hills Golf and Country Club in Lady Lake. She managed a Traveling Ladies Softball team and won seven tournaments in ten years.

She taught herself the track events of javelin, discus and shotput, participating in the Florida Senior Olympic Games in 2002 and 2003. She also took the first ladies softball team to the National Senior Olympics in 2003.

She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard E. Quintal.

Family members include a daughter, Lisa Loeb, and her husband, David, and their two children, Jonah and Hannah, of Wallingford, Conn.; a son, Michael Quintal, of LaQuinta, Calif.; a daughter, Joanne Randall, and her husband, Dan, and their two children, Madeleine and Joseph, of Epsom; a brother, Edwin C. Perkins of Palm Desert, Calif.; a sister, Virginia Fisher, of Lady Lake, Fla., The Villages; several nieces and nephews; and her dear friend, Noreen Farrow, in The Villages.

DORIS JEAN RILEY
HOOKSETT – Doris Jean Riley – wife, mother and grandmother – died on Saturday, June 2, 2007, in Florida, 77, after battling a lengthy illness.

She was born in Manchester in 1929 to A.G. and Anna Gosselin.

During her long and happy life, Mrs. Riley was not only very involved with her family but was also very active in her community.

It began with the business she and her husband, Richard, started in 1955, Riley’s Sport Shop.

She was also active with the Hooksett Woman’s Club and was elected eight times to the

New Hampshire State Legislature.

While serving in the legislature, she had a long list of proud accomplishments one of which included the first State Duck Stamp. That has raised millions of dollars for the acquisition of water fowl habitat.
In 1988, after they sold their business, Mrs. Riley and her husband retired to Delray Beach, Fla., for the winters and spent their summers in New Hampshire at Lake Winnipesaukee.

During her retirement, she continued being very active in the NRA along with her husband.

In addition to her dedication to her family and community, she had many outside hobbies and interests. She loved playing cards, gardening, traveling, antiquing, boating and participating in antique car shows with her Model A Ford. At any given time she could be seen crocheting afghans for family and friends. One of her favorite songs was “My Way” which is a great way to describe how she lived her life.

Mrs. Riley was deeply loved, will be greatly missed and always remembered with great affection.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Family members include her loving husband of 53 years, Richard Riley; a daughter, Debbie Stanyan and her husband, Bill Stanyan; grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler and Michelle Stanyan; siblings, Lorraine Peterson and her husband, Waldo (Wally) Peterson, Margo Lacaillade and her husband, Harold (Carl) Lacaillade, Arthur Gosselin Jr., Beatrice Horion, and Jackie Cullerot and her husband, Lionel (Nel) Cullerot; and nieces and nephews.

PAMELA D. PARKHURST
GOFFSTOWN – Pamela D. Parkhurst, 59, died June 21, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born to Oscar L. and Lucille M. (Beland) Dube in Nashua. She was a resident of Goffstown since 1973.

Mrs. Parkhurst began her career as an LPN at Monadnock Regional Hospital of Peterborough.

She then owned and operated Crafts By Pam for more than 20 years.

She also worked at Eagle’s Flight Daycare and as a caregiver with Child and Family Services of Manchester. She was a member of various local and national crafting organizations.

An avid gardener, Mrs. Parkhurst’s great joy was spending time in the yard taking care of her flowers and enjoying her grandchildren. She was also a dedicated sports fan, especially of UNH Hockey and the Boston Women’s Rugby Club.

Family members include her husband of 40 years, Bradford D. Parkhurst of Goffstown; two children, Diana L. Parkhurst of Weymouth, Mass., and Daniel B. Parkhurst of Conway; daughter-in-law, Lynn M. Parkhurst; two grandchildren, Jonathan S. Parkhurst and Riley A. Parkhurst; a sister, Paula Campbell of Milford; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

LEONARD A. BROCHU
HOOKSETT – Leonard “Red” Alphonse Brochu, 73, died June 18, 2007, in Hooksett while building a granite wall.

He was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Concord to Henri and Lucia Brochu. He lived in Concord his entire life. He graduated from eighth grade at Sacred Heart School in 1947 and Concord High School in 1951. He played on the Sacred Heart Senior hockey team and was captain in 1950 and 1951. He organized and played with the Concord Shamrocks Hockey team.

Mr. Brochu was the assistant coach of the Concord High School hockey team when it restarted.

He coached the Bishop Brady High School hockey team for five years.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of Concord Youth Hockey and the Concord Business Group. He was past governor of the American Nurseryman Association of New Hampshire.

He was a School Board member at Bishop Brady for four years. He was a member of the New Hampshire Good Roads Association, Concord Business Group, Capital City Rotary, New England Nurseryman Association, New Hampshire Landscape Association, New Hampshire Plant Growers Association, the Elks Club for 43 years and the Eagles for 33 years.

Mr. Brochu served on the Concord City Council from 1998 to 2007.

He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in Concord.

Mr. Brochu started L.A. Brochu Inc. in 1951 as a small landscaping business. In 1969, he started the nursery, which is now the largest nursery in the state.

Mr. Brochu was a dedicated businessman who also knew how to give back to the community in many different ways. Behind his gruff exterior and calloused hands was a man with a huge heart. He loved his family first and foremost. He loved his work and his community and was truly passionate about both.

He was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Marie Alana; a brother, Robert Brochu; and two sisters, Irene Desmarais and Cecile Ferland.

Family members include his wife of 43 years, Priscilla; a son, Leonard II and his wife, Leah, of Concord; and two daughters, Susan Proulx and Mary Proulx, both of Concord; nine grandchildren, Donald II and Gregory Proulx, Catheryne, Hilary and Jaclyn Proulx, and Hannah, Leonard III, William and Henry Brochu; three brothers, Raymond “Tommie” Brochu of El Paso, Texas, and Francis, and Gerard Brochu, both of Concord; and two sisters, Marie Rose Noel of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Theresa Chase of Hooksett.

Memorial donations may be made to the Leonard A. Brochu scholarship fund at Concord Youth Hockey, P.O. Box 682, Concord, NH 03301; or to the Leonard A. Brochu Memorial Fund at Bishop Brady High School, 25 Columbus Ave., Concord, NH 03301.

GEORGIANNA RUTH ADAIR
CONCORD – Georgianna Ruth Adair, affectionately known as “Georgie,” 82, died June 19, 2007, at home.

She was born in Boston to the late George and Hazel (Parmenter) Gavin. She grew up and attended school in Boston.

After her marriage to Aubrey Stuart Adair, Mrs. Adair moved to New Hampshire to raise her family.

She was a dedicated mother who also found time to work. She was employed by the Concord School District in the cafeteria at Walker Elementary School, and she also worked at Concord Hospital in housekeeping.

Most of all, she loved her family and was happiest when sharing time with her loved ones. She loved going to the ocean and mountains.

Mrs. Adair was predeceased by her husband, Aubrey Stuart Adair, who died in 1980; a longtime companion, Lester Bouchard; a son, Robin “Bob” Adair; a son-in-law, James Tibbetts; a granddaughter, Devon Adair; three brothers, Frank Gavin, Harry and Marvin Fullerton; and two sisters, Florence Crivello and Maude Amero.

Family members include two daughters, Audrey Gilpatric and companion, Bill Baker, of Concord and Theresa Tibbitts and companion, Paul Lloyd, of Boscawen; three sons, John Adair and Carolyn of Concord, George Adair of West Palm, Fla., Aubrey Adair and his wife, Laura, of West Palm, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Shana Perry, Sabrina Adair, Kayla Adair, Derek, Jamie and Corey Tibbetts, Sean, Shannon and Shaleen Gilpatric, and Morgaine, Beckey and Jake Adair; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Bouchard.

JEAN MARIE COX
CONCORD – Jean Marie Cox, 49, of Concord, died June 16, 2007, at home.

She was born in Concord to George Scandalis and Eleanor (Williams) Scandalis.

married to her childhood sweetheart for 33 years, Mrs. Cox was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished her family, and making her loved ones happy is what made her the happiest. She enjoyed taking rides to the ocean or the mountains with her husband, spending time with her children and bragging about her “grandbabies.”

Family members include her mother, Eleanor Scandalis of Concord; a brother, Charles Scandalis of Bristol; a husband, Russell F. Cox of Concord; two sons, Russell E. Cox of Pittsfield and Ronnie J. Cox of Allenstown; a daughter, Nichol M. (Cox) Chesley of Boscawen; and six grandchildren, Russell, Joey, Ryan, Stephen, Charlie and Nicholas.

Her family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. J. Marc Pipas and his staff at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for the treatments that allowed Mrs. Cox to see four more grandchildren brought into the world and her only daughter become a bride.
