Donald P. Schultz

EXETER - Donald P. Schultz, 70, of Sleepy Hollow Road, died of cancer Saturday, March 10, 2001, at his home.

He was born July 9, 1930, in Peoria, Ill., the son of Raymond and Eva Schultz and had resided in Exeter since 1966.

He earned his bachelor of science degree in language arts and political science from Manchester College in Indiana; his master's degree in drama from Purdue University; he was awarded a John Hay Fellow at Harvard in 1962 but worked on his doctorate studies in history at Michigan State University.

Mr. Schultz retired from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1996 where he taught American history, economics, drama and track for 30 years. He was responsible for forming the Academy's first theater department and later consulted on the design of the Fisher Theater Building, becoming both its director and the chairman of the Drama Department.

He served on the Executive Committee and Faculty Workload Studies Committee; was the Washington Intern Coordinator; advisor to the Economics Club, Business Club and the Exeter Political Union group. He was the dorm head of Lamont, Wentworth and Dow dormitories before moving to the home he and his wife designed and built.

He had previously taught history at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Mich., for 12 years, where he served on the U.S. History Advanced Placement Committee, graded and wrote advanced placement history exams and produced school plays.

Mr. Schultz served on the Exeter Budget Committee as chairman of Social Services; was trustee of the library; and a member of the town's emergency planning committee. He was instrumental in developing an Academy plan for response to a Seabrook Nuclear Plant emergency.

He was a member of the Exeter Congregational Church and served as moderator, historian and on the Diaconate.

He acted and directed with the Exeter Players and played the doctor in the Paramount film "A Separate Peace," which was filmed in Exeter in the 1970s.

He enjoyed carpentry, golfing and skating.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Schultz of Exeter; three daughters, Susan Robicsek of Westford, Vt., Lori Kaiser of Rockport, Mass., and Kristin Schultz of Oakland, Calif.; one son, Brad Schultz of Maynard, Mass.; four grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Manning of Peoria; one nephew and two grandnephews.

Memorial services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Exeter Congregational Church, Front Street, Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Third Century Building Fund, Tower Project, Congregational Church of Exeter, Front St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

John D. Ireland

EXETER - John David Ireland, 81, of RiverWoods Drive, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at the Lodge at RiverWoods.

He was born in Columbus, Ohio, attended Crestview Grade School, North High School and was a graduate of Ohio State with a degree in chemical engineering. He received his master's degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the Corps of Engineers in England, North Africa and with the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge.

Mr. Ireland's professional career included research and development in hydrocarbon and crude oil recovery synthesis for Standard of Indiana; recovery of pure titanium metal at Battelle Memorial Institute; high energy fuels from boron for Olin Mathieson and plant development projects for several New York engineering design firms. He returned to Columbus as a process engineer for Borden and later went into private consulting on chemical processes and energy conservation.

He was the state auditor for U.S. Energy Title III Programs from 1983 until 1986; was a commercial pilot with instrument rating; and a distance swimmer.

Mr. Ireland was a member of First Community Church and Central Ohio Radio Readers.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, D. Virginia Ireland of Exeter; two sons and their wives, David C. and Carol Ireland of Salem, and William P. and Sandra Ireland of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; two daughters and their husbands, Dr. Jeanne E. and Norris Manser of Wynnewood, Pa., and Helen and Jean-Pierre Subrenat of Roubaix, France; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, Dr. Robert B. Ireland, who died March 18, 2001.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at RiverWoods of Exeter in the Great Bay Room, with the Rev. John E. Denson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Greater N.H. Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301 or to the RiverWoods Benevolent Fund, 7 RiverWoods Drive, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Arthur T. Marshall Sr.

EXETER - Arthur Thomas Marshall Sr., 89, of Garfield Street, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec. 9, 1911, in Exeter the son of the late William and Ida (Fortier) Marshall.

Mr. Marshall was the founder of Marshall Transportation and was the company bus mechanic.

He was a long time member of the Bow Lake Association and was an avid fisherman, hunter and coin collector.

The widower of Helen (Loch) Marshall, he is survived by two sons and their wives, A. Thomas and Eileen Marshall of Northwood, and John and Heidi Marshall of Errol; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one niece.

He was predeceased by one son, Joseph J. Marshall and one brother, William Marshall.

Private services were held Wednesday. Burial was in Exeter Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Healthcare East Wing Fund, 4 Alumni Drive, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Yvonne M. Bernier

EXETER - Yvonne Marie Bernier, 85, of 2 Morrow St., died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

She was born July 31, 1915, in St. Jean Port Joli, Quebec, Canada. She came to the United States in 1936, and had resided in Epping for 40 years before moving to Exeter 25 years ago.

Mrs. Bernier was a communicant of St. Michael Church and the French Club.

The widow of Camille Bernier, who died in 1974, she is survived by two sons, John C. Bernier and Ronald Bernier, both of Exeter; two daughters, Nancy Baron of Apple Valley, Calif., and Aline Dube of Exeter; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Antonia St. Pierre and Hazel St. Pierre, both of St. Jean Port Joli; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Francis Ouillet.

She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Exeter. Spring burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Rockingham VNA and Hospice, 136 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Carroll B. Bishop

EPPING - Carroll Burton Bishop, 85, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton.

He was born April 11, 1915, in Fremont, the son of the late Alonzo and Lillian (Fuller) Bishop. He was raised in Fremont and was a longtime resident of Epping.

Mr. Bishop served with the Conservation Civilian Corps camps as the first cook in 1933 and 1934. After returning home he spent his earlier years as a foreman with Sorabella's Box Co. in Raymond. He owned a drywall business for several years and later served as chief of police in Epping. Nearing the age of retirement, he worked as a custodian at Epping Elementary School.

He enjoyed boxing and wrestling and was well known in Amesbury, Mass., in 1934-35 when he held the wrestling title there and remained undefeated through 1935.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ella (Porter) Bishop of Epping; two daughters, Grace Tucker and her husband Robert of Exeter and Julie Bishop of Epping; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Perreault of Seabrook; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Nancy Carol Sargent; two sisters, Etta Bishop and Evelyn Fortier; and four brothers, Chester, Herbert, Andrew and Sidney Bishop.

There are no calling hours. Spring burial will be in Village Cemetery, Fremont.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater N.H. Chapter, 10 Ferry St., Suite 419, Concord, NH 03301.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Doris V. Brunelle

SEABROOK - Doris V. (Marquis) Brunelle, 78, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Seacoast Health Center, Hampton.

She was born Jan. 9, 1923, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of the late Adelard and Irma (Belleau) Marquis.

She attended St. Joseph School and Academy and was a graduate of Salem Vocational High School.

Mrs. Brunelle was the office manager and vice president of Brunelle Office Equipment retiring in 1986.

The widow of Joseph P. Brunelle, who died in 1988, she is survived by three daughters, Nancy Marudzinski of Burlington, Mass., Joanne Marquis of Philadelphia and Doris Sarni, M.D., of San Francisco; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; two nephews; two stepchildren, Cecile Elwell of Salem, Mass., and Frank Brunelle of Cape Cod; and a special friend, Maryanne Broughton of Seabrook.

She was predeceased by one sister, Jeanette Stafford; and one stepdaughter, Betty Anne McDougall.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Berube & Sons Funeral Home, 191 Lafayette St., (Route 1A/114) Salem, Mass., followed at 11 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. James Church, Salem. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.

Melvin E. Dunbrack

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Melvin E. Dunbrack, 54, formerly of Hampton, died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 1, 1946, in Exeter, the son of Edith (Courtney) Dunbrack Marsolais of New Port Richey, Fla., and the late Donald S. Dunbrack. He was raised in the Hampton area moving to Dunedin in 1990.

He was a 1964 graduate of Winnacunnet High School.

Mr. Dunbrack was the assistant manager of the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Donna Dunbrack of Dunedin; one sister, Judyth Koser of Clearwater, Fla.; one niece and nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Spring graveside services will be held in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Assistance with local arrangements is by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Gary D. Fegan

NEWMARKET - Gary D. Fegan, 52, of New Road, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at his home after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

He was born Sept. 11, 1948, in Exeter, the son of Clayton and Almeda (Chase) Fegan. He had resided in Hampton and Eliot, Maine, before moving to Newmarket.

He was a 1968 graduate of Exeter High School.

He served with the Army National Guard during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Service medal, Overseas Service Bar, Vietnam Service Ribbon with device and Expert Badge with bar (M-16).

Mr. Fegan was a member of the Church of Christ, Kittery, Maine.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time at Phillips Lake in Lucerne, Maine, with his family.

He was a Little League and soccer coach in Eliot.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jill (Monaghan) Fegan of Newmarket; two sons, Denis Fegan of Brentwood and Jamie Fegan and his wife Cherise of Fremont; two grandchildren; one sister, Linda French; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one brother, C. Wayne Fegan, who died in 1993.

Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ, 48 Love Lane, Kittery, Maine.
