Edward J. Sherry

BRENTWOOD - Edward J. Sherry, 74, of Dudley Road, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Jersey City, N.J., the son of the late Edward and Sophie (Kilinski) Sherry and had resided in Brentwood for 23 years.

He was a graduate of Snyder High School and attended Rutgers University in New Jersey.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sherry was a manager for Bell Labs in New Jersey and retired from the North Andover, Mass., office.

He served on the Brentwood Budget Committee and the Building Committee; was a member of the Historical Society and was treasurer for the Senior Citizens Club. The Brentwood 2000 town report was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Sherry.

He was a tool maker and enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa M. (Krajewski) Sherry of Brentwood; one son, Edward M. Sherry of Colorado; two daughters, Susan T. Sherry of Nahant, Mass., and Diane M. Funk of Middlebury, Vt.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Reeves of Texas and Carol Ann Tynan of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday in St. Michael Church, Exeter. Burial was in the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.

Memorial donations may be made to the Brentwood Historical Society, 1 Dalton Road, Brentwood, NH 03833 or to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Ann F. Wait

RYE - Ann F. Wait, 90, of 795 Washington Road, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Webster at Rye.

She was born Jan. 15, 1911, in Boston, the daughter of the late Langdon and Olga (Frothingham) Frothingham. She resided in Wellesley, Mass., for more than 50 years, moving to Rye in 1997.

She was a graduate of the Thomas School in Connecticut.

Mrs. Wait was an artist, working in oils. She studied in Rockport under Thieme and Hibbard.

The widow of William G. Wait, who died in 1995, she is survived by one son, William G. "Bill" Wait Jr. of Camp Hill Village, Copake, N.Y.; one daughter, Ann W. Newell of Hampton; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Elizabeth Wait, who died in 1994; and three sisters, Olga F. Eckert, Ellen F. Dunnell and Eugenia F. Lombard, who all died in 2000.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Webster at Rye, 795 Washington Road, Rye. Private interment will be in Pineview Cemetery, Queensbury, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Camp Hill Village Fund, Copake, NY 12516.

Assistance with the arrangements is by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Arzilla P. Schleich

EPPING - Arzilla P. Schleich, 92, of Old State Road, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at her home.

She was born July 14, 1908, in New York, and had resided in Bristol, Conn., before moving to Epping six years ago.

The widow of Edward Schleich Jr., she is survived by two sons and their wives, Edward and Ruth Schleich of Terryville, Conn., and Warren and Susan Schleich of Epping; five grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Warren Person of White Plains, N.Y.

Private services were held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Kevin J. McGloughlin

NOTTINGHAM - Kevin J. McGloughlin, 46, of Lavoie Drive, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at his home after a period of failing health.

He was born Sept. 14, 1954, in Boston, the son of the late Gerard and Catherine (Manning) McGloughlin.

He was raised in Boston and had resided in Newmarket for 20 years before moving to Nottingham two years ago. He also owned a home in Tamworth.

He was a graduate of a Boston area high school.

Mr. McGloughlin owned and operated McGloughlin Painting in Newmarket for more than 20 years.

He restored sports cars, sponsored a Sunday evening men's league basketball team, and enjoyed snowmobiling.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lou Ann (Hubbard) McGloughlin of Nottingham; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Tricia A. and Matthew Orcutt of Manchester, Jill M. and Frederick Dorestant of Plaistow and Keri J. McGloughlin of Nottingham; two grandchildren; three brothers, Richard McGloughlin of Boston, Gerard McGloughlin Jr. of Dedham, Mass., and Peter McGloughlin of West Roxbury, Mass.; one sister, Janet Wallace of North Berwick, Maine; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, John McGloughlin, who died in 1986.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Main Street, Newmarket, with the Rev. John Finnigan as celebrant. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Joyce Wheeler

EXETER - Joyce Wheeler, 77, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at RiverWoods after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Newfoundland, Canada, and emigrated to the United States during World War II. Her late husband's career with the United Nations gave her the opportunity to live in North Africa, Thailand, Austria and the Middle East.

She had resided in North Hampton before moving to RiverWoods in 1998.

Mrs. Wheeler was a volunteer at the North Hampton Library.

She enjoyed reading, bridge, knitting and traveling.

The widow of Stan Wheeler, she is survived by three sons, Bruce Wheeler of Tiburon, Calif., Roger Wheeler of Chagford, England, and Dic Wheeler of Middletown, Conn.; three daughters-in-law; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one sister, Josie, of Newfoundland.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Richard Scammon

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - Richard Scammon, 85, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at his home of Alzheimer's disease.

He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Richard and Julia Scammon.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Scammon was a political scientist and elections analyst. He last worked as an elections analyst for NBC News in 1988. He got his first experience with elections after World War II when he worked for the U.S. military to set up the machinery for the elections in West Germany.

He founded and directed a non-profit organization in 1955 called the Elections Research Center. His knowledge of statistics, election results, public opinion polls and census data, was legendary, making him a source for reporters covering Washington.

He was appointed director of the Census Bureau by President John F. Kennedy, and served for four years.

Mr. Scammon wrote "The Real Majority" with Ben J. Wattenberg in 1970.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Allen Scammon of Gaithersburg; one daughter, Anne Valerie of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Jean Scammon Hyland of Warwick, R.I.; and one nephew, Jeffrey Scammon Hyland of Stratham.

Roger P. Sloan

EXETER - Roger Pagan Sloan, 81, of Newfields Road, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a lengthy illness.

He was born July 8, 1919, in Claremont, the son of the late Harry E. and Edith (Pagan) Sloan and had resided in Exeter since 1946.

He was educated in Claremont, was a graduate of the local high school and received his bachelor of arts degree in forestry from the University of New Hampshire and his master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sloan was employed with the UNH Extension Service from 1946 until 1983, serving as the county forester then as the state extension forester. He was also an associate professor at UNH.

He was a former chairman of the Exeter Conservation Commission; a trustee of Gilman Park; and former director of Exeter Cooperative Bank.

Mr. Sloan was a longtime member of Exeter Congregational Church and served as deacon for several years.

He enjoyed gardening, bee keeping, reading, managing his woodlots and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris (Aldrich) Sloan of Exeter; one son and his wife, Douglas and Anne Sloan of Stratham; and two grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one son, Bruce A. Sloan, who died in 1985.

There are no calling hours. Private burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 5, at 4 p.m. in Exeter Congregational Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Public Library, Chestnut St., Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Society for the Protection of N.H. Forests, 54 Portsmouth St., Concord, NH 03301.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Henry J. Szymczak

SEABROOK - Henry J. Szymczak, 61, of 46 Evergreen Drive, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Whidden Hospital, Everett, Mass., after a sudden illness.

He was born Jan. 17, 1940, in Chelsea, Mass., the son of the late John H. and Sophie (Sudanowicz) Szymczak and had resided in Seabrook since 1970 coming from Malden, Mass.

He was a graduate of Malden High School and Boston University.

Mr. Szymczak was a lab technician in the aircraft division of General Electric Co. in Lynn, Mass., for 35 years.

He was a collector of treasures, which included a wide variety of things.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Mary E. (Learned) Szymczak; one daughter and her husband, Debra L. and Kristopher Forcier of Spencer, Mass.; two sons, John H. Szymczak and his wife Paula of Dover and James A. Szymczak of Seabrook; two grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Maira of Middleboro, Mass., and Janet Cestroni of Tewksbury, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Peabody, Mass.

Arthur J. Turcotte

EXETER - Graveside services for Arthur J. Turcotte will be held Saturday, May 12, at 10 a.m. in Exeter Cemetery. The Rev. Richard E. St. Louis Jr. of St. Michael Church will officiate.

Mr. Turcotte, of 37 Brenwtood Road, died Feb. 4, 2001.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
