Stella E. Cilley

NEWMARKET - Mrs. Stella E. Cilley, 91, of Grant Road, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, Fremont.

She was born Aug. 25, 1909, in Dixfield, Maine, the daughter of Jesse H. and Lydia (Holman) Smith and had resided in Newmarket since 1930.

She was a 1926 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary, Exeter, a 1928 graduate of Plymouth Normal School and received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1968.

Mrs. Cilley taught first grade in Epping and Nottingham for 14 years and wrote for several area newspapers for many years.

She was past master and secretary for the Piscassic Grange, Newfields; a member of the Fair Hearing Council of Newmarket; an active member of the Rockingham Extension Service; and past president of the Newmarket Women's Club.

She was a member of the Baptist Society of Newmarket Community Church, where she served as treasurer for many years. She was superintendent of the Sunday School program for 40 years; past president and secretary of the Friendly Club; and former secretary of the Parish Circle.

Mrs. Cilley was a former member of the Newmarket Budget Committee and was a member of the first Planning Board and served for several terms. She was the second lady jurist selected from Newmarket.

The widow of Norman O. Cilley, who died in 1982, she is survived by three sons, Richard Cilley of Caribou, Maine, Roger Cilley of Barrington and Robert Cilley of Newmarket; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Newmarket Community Church, with Rev. David Wuori, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Newmarket.

Janet E. Larson

LEE - Memorial services for Janet E. Larson will be held Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Lamprey River Farm, 76 Lee Hook Road, Lee. Casual dress.

Ms. Larson, 43, died March 6, 2001.

Gabrielle L. LePage

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Gabrielle L. LePage, 85, formerly of Exeter, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Heritage Harbour Health & Rehabilitation Center, Annapolis.

She was born April 14, 1916, in Manchester and lived most of her life in Exeter.

Mrs. LePage was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter.

The widow of Omer LePage, her husband of 51 years who died in 1986, she is survived by three sons, Roger LePage of Annapolis, Paul LePage of Keene and Richard LePage of Wolfeboro Falls; one daughter, Doris Murphy of East Hampton, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leola Rodier of Somersworth.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Ethel F. Sullivan

EXETER - Ethel F. (Woundy) Sullivan, 86, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Exeter Healthcare after a period of failing health.

She was born June 2, 1914, in Newburyport, Mass., the daughter of the late Roscoe and Ethel (Hale) Woundy, and had resided in Exeter since 1937.

She was a graduate of Newburyport High School.

Mrs. Sullivan was employed by the Towle Silver Co. in Newburyport for several years.

She enjoyed nature, crafts, writing poetry and her family.

The widow of John D. Sullivan, who died in 1985, she is survived by one daughter, Joan Wright of Portsmouth, two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, George Woundy of Newburyport; and several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours or services planned.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Science Center General Fund, Odiorne Point State Park, 570 Ocean Blvd., Rye, NH 03870.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Russell C. Allen

YORK HARBOR, Maine - Russell C. Allen, 79, of 7 Norwood Circle, died May 31, 2001 at the Partridge House, Hampton.

He was born July 26, 1921, in Boston, the son of the late Russell B. and Zylpha (Churchill) Allen and had resided in Rye Beach for 35 years, and in Prescott, Ariz.

He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Mr. Allen worked for the Macallen Co. in Newmarket where he became known as "Mr. Mica," retiring in 1986 from the Macallen Mica Division of the Essex Group. He was awarded the Hall of Fame Award at the National Electrical Insulation Conference in 1995.

He was an avid golfer and was past president of the McDonough Caddy Scholarship Foundation. He enjoyed skiing Saddleback Mountain.

The widower of Beatrice Allen, he is survived by two daughters, Laurie A. Carlock of San Diego and Andrea A. Krofina of Trumbull, Conn.; four sons, Christopher M. Allen of North Woodstock, Eric Allen of North Hampton, Mark Allen of Rye and Peter W. Allen of North Hampton; six grandchildren; and one sister, Faith Perry of Barre, Vt.

He was predeceased by one brother, Matthew Allen.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in First Parish Church, York, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McDonough Caddy Scholarship Foundation, c/o Rick Mahoney, 20 Main St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Michael J. Dagostino

EXETER - Michael J. Dagostino, 84, of Off Forest Street, died Monday, June 4, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 22, 1916, in Maynard, Mass., the son of the late Frank and Mary (Iannarelli) Dagostino. He had resided in Dover and Brighton, Mass., before moving to Exeter in 1949.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and served as honorary base commander at Pease Air Force Base.

Mr. Dagostino was the treasurer of Exeter Rose Farms which was founded by his father in 1939. He was head of personnel at Rockingham Park, Salem, for more than 50 years.

He was a prominent member of the Republican Party.

He served as a police commissioner for the Dover and Exeter Police departments; was on the board of trustees for Exeter Hospital, Indian Head Bank and Salem Banks, both in Salem; was on the board of directors for Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center and served as director of parks in Dover.

He was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and served as the youngest Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus in Dover.

The widower of Margaret (Redden) Dagostino, who died in 1994, he is survived by three brothers, Tony Dagostino, Benny Dagostino and Frank Dagostino Jr. all of Exeter; one sister, Louise Dagostino of Exeter; and many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front and Lincoln Streets, Exeter. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, Greenfield, NH 03047.

David R. Jefferson Sr.

HAMPTON FALLS - David Rowe Jefferson Sr., 69, of 4 Oak Drive, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Exeter Hospital after a period of failing health.

He was born June 18, 1931, in Hillsdale, Mich., the son of the late Howard Bonar and Genevieve (Rowe) Jefferson. He was raised in Hamilton, N.Y., and Worcester, Mass., and had resided in Hampton Falls for 32 years.

He was a 1949 graduate of Deerfield Academy and a 1953 graduate of Harvard University, where he was an active member of the Iroquois and Hasty Pudding clubs. He completed his master's of divinity at Yale University in 1956, having spent a year at New College University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Mr. Jefferson was senior development officer for the Joslin Diabetes Center and McLean Hospital, where he was responsible for raising money for medical research. He began his career as the chaplain of the colleges of Queens and Nassau counties in New York, dean of admissions at C.W. Post College, Dickinson College and Bradford College. He was headmaster at Worcester Academy. He then worked in the financial services arena where he became a chartered financial planner and a certified life underwriter.

He was a 32nd degree mason and was a member and past master of St. James Lodge No. 102 F.&A,M. of Hampton; the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; the N.H. Consistory, Valley of Nashua; the Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord; the Harvard Faculty Club; and the Harvard Club of Boston.

He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Anne Sawyer (Morgan) Jefferson of Hampton Falls; two sons and their wives, David R. Jr. and Lucinda Jefferson of South Berwick, Maine, and CDR (USN) Peter H. and Karen Jefferson of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren; one brother, William H. Jefferson of Canastota, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Assistance with the arrangements was by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

James J. Kelley

EXETER - James J. Kelley, 78, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the New Hampshire Veteran's Home in Tilton.

He was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Lynn, Mass., the son of the late Leo F. and Mary (O'Connell) Kelley and had resided in Exeter for 25 years.

He was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School and attended Boston University.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Gleaves (DD-423).

Mr. Kelley was a U.S. federal mediator under President Gerald Ford and was the Massachusetts commissioner of labor under Gov. Foster Furcolo. He was previously the international representative for the AFL-CIO Union of Electrical Workers and had formerly worked for General Electric in Lynn.

He was a former member of Exeter Country Club and of the American Legion Post No. 32 of Exeter.

He is survived by one son, Robert J. Kelley of Durham; two daughters, Theresa A. Swan of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Kathleen K. Rush of North Hampton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas A. Kelley of Largo, Fla., and Daniel L. Kelley; and one niece and nephew.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Maureen T. Kelley, who died in 1966, and one brother, Donald Kelley, who died in World War II.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Burial will be in the N.H. Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen.

Memorial donations may be made to the N.H. Veteran's Home, Winter St., Box 229, Tilton, NH 03276.
