William E. Cuddy

GEORGETOWN, Mass. - William E. Cuddy, 73, of Georgetown, husband of Margaret (Peggy Parah) Cuddy and son of the late John and Helen Cuddy, died Jan. 8, 2002, after a long illness.

A native of Lawrence, he was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, a Navy veteran, and a 1954 graduate of Merrimack College, where he received the Loyalty Award. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where he served as an usher, taught CCD classes, helped initiate the Boy Scout troop, and co-chaired many country fairs. He worked in the accounting department at the former Western Electric Co. for 31 years, where he also began the Explorer Scout Post.

An avid bowler and a former member of the Far Corners Golf Club, he was an active supporter of local athletic programs. He served as a coach in the Andover Little League and the Georgetown Babe Ruth League, and after his retirement served as assistant to Bunker Bean in coaching the Georgetown High School baseball team. A former vice chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, Bill also served on the Board of Water Commissioners for 15 years.

In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by brothers, John Cuddy and wife Nancy of Wilbraham, Joseph Cuddy and wife Peggy of Hampton, N.H., Gerald Cuddy of Lawrence, and sister-in-law Betty Cuddy of Lawrence; in-laws, Alfred and Peggy Parah, James and Joan Parah, and Mary (Parah); Daniel Herlihy, to whom he was a surrogate father; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother James Cuddy and sister-in-law Agnes Cuddy.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at noon at St. Mary's Church in Georgetown. Burial will follow in Harmony Cemetery, Georgetown. Family and friends may call today (Friday) from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Merton E. Roberts Jr. and Conte Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant St., Georgetown. Memorial contributions may be made to the Georgetown High School baseball program, c/o Alan Haddad, athletic director, Georgetown High School, Georgetown, MA 01833.

Barbara L. Perkins

SEABROOK - Barbara L. Perkins, 81, of 159 Walton Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Country Manor Rehabilitation Center, Newburyport, Mass.

She was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Seabrook, the daughter of the late Kenneth R. and Almena P. (Janvrin) Knowles.

She attended Seabrook schools and was a 1938 graduate of Amesbury (Mass.) High School and a graduate of the Bridgeport (Conn.) Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Perkins was a registered nurse for Supervisory Administrative Unit No. 21 as a school nurse and retired from Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, after many years of service.

She was a member of Rand Memorial Church, attended Trinity United Church and was a charter member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post No. 70, all in Seabrook.

She is survived by her husband, Frank A. Perkins of Seabrook; two daughters, Deidre Yavorosky of Ithica, N.Y., and Joanne Lowe and her husband Thomas of Seabrook; and one granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Vincent A. Yavorosky, who died in 1961; and by two brothers, Kenneth Knowles and Leavitt Knowles.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook.

Robert C. Burge

HAMPTON - Robert C. Burge, 89, of 284 High St., died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Aug. 13, 1912, in Somersworth, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Nelson) Burge. He moved to Hampton 30 years ago upon his retirement, coming from Mountain Ranch, Calif., where he resided for 23 years.

In 1930, at the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine as an apprentice seaman and rose to the rank of captain of an oil tanker by the time he retired at the end of World War II.

Mr. Burge raised turkeys on his ranch in California and was a realtor and a stockbroker.

He was a member of the Hampton United Methodist Church and of St. James Lodge No. 102, F.&A.M. of Hampton.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene R. (Mangiante) Burge of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of Hampton United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Masonic services were held Monday by St. James Lodge No. 102 F.& A.M.

David M. Pierce

EPPING - David M. Pierce, 51, of 153 Old Hedding Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 27, 1951, in Rochester, the son of Gloria (Hart) Pierce of Dover and the late Maurice Pierce. He resided all of his life in the Seacoast area and in Epping for the past 20 years.

He was a graduate of Oyster River High School, Durham.

Mr. Pierce was a master electrician and was employed by Kohlhase Company and previously for Exeter & Hampton Electric Co.

He enjoyed fishing and spending time at his camp.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Nancy J. (Paul) Pierce of Epping; two sons, Jamieson Pierce of Ohio and Jason Pierce of Manchester; one daughter, Julie Pierce of Newmarket; five grandchildren; two brothers, Michael Pierce of New Hampshire and Ronald Pierce of Vermont; four sisters, Deborah Welch of West Virginia, Cindy Herrick of Nottingham, Pamela Criss of Rochester and Wendy Rowe of Dover; one stepson and his wife, Glen S. and Laren Wise of South Hampton; one stepdaughter, Shelia this is correct, H. Jamieson of North Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.

A. Huntley Smith

NEWMARKET - A. Huntley Smith, 92, of The Pines, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at Exeter Healthcare, after a brief illness.

He was born May 20, 1909, in Elliots Cove, Newfoundland, the son of Archibald and Rachael (Sanson) Smith. He came to the United States at a young age and lived in Lynn and Ipswich, Mass., for many years, in Dover for 18 years and in Newmarket for the past two years. He wintered in Bradenton, Fla.

Mr. Smith was an engineer and worked for Shetland Manufacturing in Salem, Mass., for many years. He held patents on several products which he designed. When Smith Corona purchased Shetland, they retained him as a property management consultant.

The widow of Gertrude E. (Crossman) Smith, his wife of 69 years who died in 2000, he is survived by five children, Elaine G. Graves of Rochester, Helen A. MacWhinnie of Ipswich, Huntley E. Smith of Salem, Mass., Arlene A. Jewett of Raymond and Edward A. Smith of East Kingston; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; two brothers, Donald Smith of Rochester, N.Y., and Otto Smith of Florida; one sister, Ethel Engheben of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. David Wuori officiating. Burial will follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Peabody, Mass.

Mary E. Willard

BRENTWOOD - Mary Ellen (Tucker) Willard, 54, of South Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at Exeter Hospital after a valiant struggle with breast cancer.

She was born on May 3, 1947, in Barre, Vt., the beloved daughter of Cecil (Pete) and Arline (Ewen) Tucker. She was a 1965 graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre. In her youth she was involved in Girl Scouts, youth groups and was a past worthy adviser of the Rainbow Girls. She later became a member of Ruth Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in Barre.

After graduation from high school, she worked in the medical records department at Barre City Hospital. She married Thomas Willard on June 2, 1967, and moved to Germany where her husband was stationed in the service.

Upon their return, the Willards settled in Richmond, Vt., where they lived for 24 years. She was employed by the Chittenden East School District for many years. During that time she was an active member of the Richmond Congregational Church. In 1993, she moved to Brentwood and soon began her employment with the town of Kingston selectmen's office where she worked until the time of her death.

She was an active member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ Brentwood-Kingston where she sang in the choir. Mary loved the ocean, crafts, music, bowling and candy-making.

In addition to her parents and her husband, survivors include two daughters, Heather Willard Parizo, her husband Neil and son Taylor of Holly Springs, N.C., and Holly Willard and her daughter Haylea Verrastro of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, William and Debbie Tucker of Los Banos, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law Jane Tucker and Kevin Thompson of Putnamville, Vt.; two sisters-in-law, Kay Roberts and her husband Daniel of Plainfield, Vt., and Marlene Willard of East Montpelier, Vt.; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Joseph J. Tomasino

SALEM - Joseph J. Tomasino, 79, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at the Salemhaven Nursing Home, Salem.

He was born in Rochester, N.Y., and had been a Salem resident for 40 years.

He was educated in Albion, N.Y., schools and attended the University of Buffalo.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a medic and was a prisoner of war in Germany.

Mr. Tomasino raced harness horses at New England racetracks for 30 years and was a security guard at Hewlett Packard in Andover, Mass.

He was a member and past commander of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 8546, Salem; past state commander for the VFW; a member of the American Legion Post in Salem and the Salem AMVETS.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Salem.

He is survived by his wife, Rita (Bradley) Tomasino of Salem; two daughters, Carolyn MacPherson and her husband Matthew of Hampton and Tina Tomasino of Methuen, Mass.; two grandchildren; one brother, Jack Tomasino of Albion; one sister, Josephine Tiberio of Batavia, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph Church, Salem. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem.

Joseph A. Finochiaro

METHUEN, Mass. - Joseph A. Finochiaro, 68, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 21, 1933, in Lawrence, Mass., the son of Catherine (LaSpina) Finochiaro of Methuen and the late Charles J. Finochiaro.

He attended Lawrence schools and was a graduate of North Andover (Mass.) High School and the M. Fazio School of Beauty Culture and received extensive musical training.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Finochiaro owned and operated Elegant Novelty in Lawrence until his retirement and was a sales manager for Prudential Insurance Co. for many years.

He was an accomplished saxophone player and lead vocalist with the house band of Joe Binnette's for 12 years, of the Bel Aires, the John Charles Band, the Black Derby Jazz Band and the Elegant Sounds.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Methuen and the Sons of Italy. He was a former member and past vice president of the Local Musicians Union and a former member of the Lawrence Exchange Club.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Lucille J. (Grieco) Finochiaro of Methuen; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles and Donna Finochiaro of Merrimack, Joel and Marie Finochiaro of Haverhill, Mass., and Michael Finochiaro of Methuen; one daughter, Maria "Mia" Hicks-Langlois and her husband Raymond Langlois of Stratham; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Anthony Finochiaro.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cataudella Funeral Home, 126 Pleasant Valley St., Methuen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Lucy Church, Methuen. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence.

Memorial donations may be made to the Joseph A. Finochiaro Musical Enhancement Fund, Sacred Heart School, 289 Lafayette Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Flora F. Vadala

RYE - Flora F. (Mastromarino) Vadala, 88, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, after a brief illness.

She was born April 22, 1913, in Boston's north end, the daughter of the late Nicola and Rosina (Neri) Mastromarino.

The widow of John E. Vadala Sr., who died in 1981, she is survived by one son and his wife, John E. and Elizabeth Vadala Jr. of Nottingham; one daughter and her husband, Frances V. and Joel Crandall of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday in St. Joseph Church, Epping. Burial was in Holyhood Cemetery, Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

Rae N. Capron

STRATHAM - Rae N. Capron, 70, of 20 Squamscott Road, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born July 14, 1931, in Portsmouth, the daughter of the late Earl and Ruth (Hopper) Wiggin Sr.

She was a 1949 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary, Exeter, and a 1951 graduate of Wilfred Beauty Academy.

Mrs. Capron and her late husband established Bittersweet Kennel in Newfields and she was the owner of Pine Beauty Shop, Stratham, for 41 years.

She enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking and shopping.

The widow of Richard B. Capron, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Lori and Doug Ferguson of Newmarket and Kim and Robert Moscato of Candia; one grandson; and one brother, Earl Wiggin Jr.

Graveside services will be held in the spring.
