James P. Macklin

EAST KINGSTON - James P. Macklin, 59, of 15 Casey Road, died Friday, March 8, 2002, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Lawrence, Mass., and was raised in North Andover, Mass.

He was a 1959 graduate of Lawrence Central Catholic High School and attended Fitchburg State College and Franklin Institute in Boston.

Mr. Macklin was a draftsman for AT&T Technologies and Lucent Technologies in North Andover, retiring in 1999 after 37 years of service.

He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and a former member of Local 1366 of the Communication Workers of America.

He was a communicant of St. Michael Parish, North Andover.

He is survived by his wife, Lynne (von Hasseln) Macklin; one daughter, Casey Rose Macklin of East Kingston; one sister, Rosemary A. Macklin of West Yarmouth, Mass.; and two nephews, one uncle and several cousins.

Private funeral services were held Monday in Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, Plaistow. Spring burial will be in South Road Cemetery, East Kingston.

Anna M. Shea

PORTSMOUTH - Anna M. Shea, 94, of 188 Jones Ave., died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at SunBridge of Portsmouth.

She was born Aug. 23, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Eugene and Anna (Donnelly) Wormer. She was raised in Philadelphia and had resided in New Jersey for many years, moving to Exeter in 1995 and to Portsmouth in 1999.

She attended Temple University.

Mrs. Shea was a homemaker and was a communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter.

She was a former member of the Sparta, N.J., Women's Club and the Motors Girls Club in Union, N.J.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting for Sparta Hospital and won awards for her needlework.

The widow of Frank J. Shea, who died in 2001, she is survived by three sons, Eugene J. Shea of Rye, Owen T. Shea of North Easton, Mass., and Frank J. Shea Jr. of Franklin, Mass.; one daughter, Mary Ann Hill of Hampton Falls; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by one son, Dennis P. Shea, who died in 1997.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front Street, Exeter. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Hampshire Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 623, Manchester, NH 03105.

Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Edward C. Twombly

EXETER - Edward C. Twombly, 65, of 5 Sherwood Forest, died Saturday, March 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 13, 1937, in Newburyport, Mass., the son of Dora A. (Dame) Pratt of Merrimac, Mass., and the late Earl Twombly. He resided in Newburyport and Amesbury, Mass., for many years and had lived in Exeter for three years.

He was a 1955 graduate of Newburyport High School, where he served as the class vice president and had remained active with his class until his illness.

Mr. Twombly owned and operated New England Bullpen, a baseball card shop in Newburyport. He had previously worked at Western Electric in No. Andover, Mass., for more than 30 years.

He coached minor and little league baseball in Amesbury for many years and served on the Amesbury Finance Committee for one term in the 1980s.

He was an avid mountain climber and scaled the majority of the 4000-foot peaks in New England.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Roberta (Belair) Twombly; two daughters and one son-in-law, Cathryn and Ralph MacDonald of Exeter and Carolyn Twombly of Portsmouth; one son and his wife, Eric and Jennifer Twombly of Alexandria, Va.; three grandchildren; one brother, David Twombly of Pensacola, Fla.; and his father-in-law, Louis Belair of Byfield , Mass.

Services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Frank G. Wolfsen

NORTH HAMPTON - Frank G. Wolfsen, 86, of 108 Exeter Road, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Livermore Falls, Mass., the son of the late Ludwig F. and Isabell (Smith) Wolfsen and was raised in Newburyport, Mass. He had resided in North Hampton since 1941.

He was a 1933 graduate of Newburyport High School and a 1935 graduate of Essex Agricultural School.

Mr. Wolfsen was a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring in 1960 after 17 years of service. He had previously worked at the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Quincy, Mass., and as a diary farmer supplying milk to the H.P. Hood Dairy.

H served North Hampton as a State Representative for five terms during the 1970s and was a former clerk and acting chairman of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Hampton River Boat Club.

He was a member of Star in the East Lodge No. 59, F.&A.M. of Exeter; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; New Hampshire Consistory, Valley of Nashua; York Rite Bodies; St. Alban Chapter No. 15 and Olivet Council No. 11 of Exeter; a Knight Templar of Dewitt Clinton Commandry of Portsmouth; Bektash Temple Shrine, Concord; the C Patrol; past president of the Portsmouth Shrine Club; and a former affiliate of St. James Lodge No. 102, F.&A.M. of Hampton.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha (Anderson) Wolfsen of North Hampton; one son, Glenroy B. Wolfsen of Highbridge, N.J.; one daughter, Susan Cronin of North Hampton; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Clara Thomas of DeBary, Fla.,; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Thelma; and one granddaughter, Julie Wolfsen.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Masonic services will be held at 6:45 p.m.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in United Church of Christ, North Hampton. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bill and Peggy McConnell critical Needs Fund, c/o United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 1017, North Hampton, NH 03862.

F. Anne Madej

PLAISTOW - F. Anne (Whitney) Madej, 53, of 10 Kimball Ave., died Thursday, March 14, 2002, in Elliot Hospital, Manchester, following a brief illness.

She was raised in Dorchester, Mass., and had resided in Plaistow for 25 years coming from Weymouth, Mass.

She attended Boston Public Schools and was a graduate of Jeremiah E. Burke High School.

Mrs. Madej was employed in the claims department of Insurance Solutions Corp. of Plaistow for four years. She had previously been employed by Nynex Mobile Communications and New England Tel. & Tel.

She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Robert F. Madej; two daughters, Christine Donnelly of Kensington and Karen Driscoll and her husband Jayson of Exeter; five grandchildren; her parents, John and Florence (McIntyre) Whitney of Quincy, Mass.; one brother, John Whitney Jr. of Braintree, Mass.; one sister, Joan Climo of Wollaston, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Sunday in the Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, Plaistow.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Barbara R. Maxell

HAVERHILL, Mass. - Barbara (Watson) Ryan Maxell, 75, of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Plaistow, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at her daughter's home in Haverhill after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer.

She was born July 15, 1926, in Merrimac, Mass., the daughter of the late Merle V. and Beryl (Owens) Watson.

She attended Merrimac schools and was a 1944 graduate of the former Merrimac High School.

Mrs. Maxell worked in the admitting office at the former Hale Hospital; was a receptionist at Pentucket Medical Associates; was a secretary in the Haverhill office of United Shoe Machinery Co.; worked in the advertising department of the Haverhill Independent, which was co-founed by her late husband, Robert B. Ryan, who died in 1983. She retired from Rockingham County Newspapers in Exeter in 1986.

She was a longtime active member of the Portland Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lewis E. Maxell; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Stephen M. and Darlene Ryan, Mark E. Ryan of Raymond and Christopher and Lauren Ryan of Hampstead; one daughter and her husband, Ramona R. and David Francis of Haverhill; eight grandchildren; one stepson and his wife, Robert L. and Cathy Maxell of Anchorage, Alaska; two step-grandchildren; one brother, William G. Watson of Largo, Fla.; several nieces and nephews and one cousin.

Memorial services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in Portland Street Baptist Church, Haverhill.

Mary Lucy McDonnell

GROVELAND, Mass. - Mary "Lucy" McDonnell, 90, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, in Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill, Mass.

She was born May 6, 1911, in Boston, the daughter of Timothy J. and Lena A. (Keefe) Flynn.

She was a 1928 graduate of Cheverus High School.

Mrs. McDonnell was a bookkeeper for Western Electric and for Merrimac Valley Credit Union.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, South Groveland, Mass.

She loved literature and enjoyed the crossword puzzles in the Boston Globe and the New York Times.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, John M. McDonnell; one daughter and her husband, Jane V. and Richard Coder of Newburyport, Mass.; two sons and their wives, William and Gail McDonnell of North Hampton and John and Bobby McDonnell of Chamblee, Ga; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday in the Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers Funeral Home, Newburyport. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury, Mass.

Evelyn Stanley

KEZAR FALLS, Maine - Evelyn Stanley, 94, of Summer Street, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Fryeburg Health Care.

She was born in Dorchester, Mass., the daughter of Elwin J. and Viola Chambers Watson. She had resided in Cornish with her grandfather when the Boston schools were closed because of a whooping cough epidemic. She was a 1920 graduate of Dorchester (Mass.) High School and a 1922 graduate of a Boston business college.

Mrs. Stanley was the office manager at Industrial Box and Lumber Co., retiring in 1970 after 20 years of service. She had previously given piano lessons in Boston area schools for many years.

She and her late husband began the Riverside United Methodist Church Food Pantry. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. She was an accomplished pianist and played with the Maplewood Orchestra. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her camp on Long Pond.

Mrs. Stanley was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church; the United Methodist Women; and the 21 Club.

The widow of Preston J. Stanley Sr., her husband of 70 years who died in 1998, she is survived by one son, Preston J. Stanley Jr. of Nashua; two granddaughters including Debra Hiney of Exeter; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Elwin J. Watson Jr., of San Jose, Calif.

She was predeceased by one daughter, Barbara A. Stanley, who died in 1941.

Funeral services were held Sunday in Riverside United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the spring.
