Edward M. Houck

NORTH HAMPTON - Edward M. Houck, 59, of 72 Atlantic Ave., died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Greenwich, Conn., the son of the late Ted and Flora (Grant) Houck. He was raised in Greenwich and Amherst.

He was a graduate of Milord High School and of Bryant Stratton College, Boston, and was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam War.

Mr. Houck was a Realtor and founded E.M. Houck, Inc., Real Estate Developers in Hampton. He formerly owned and operated Houck & Hall Realtors in Amherst.

He was a member of the Seacoast Big Brothers Big Sisters board of directors for many years; a member of the National and State Association of Realtors for 35 years; a member of the Wentworth Marina; and served as chairman of the Amherst Historical Society.

He was an avid skier and yachtsman.

He was a former volunteer firefighter for the Amherst Fire Department serving as lieutenant and deputy chief.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen K. Rush of North Hampton; four sons, John A. Mooney of Heath, Mass., Edward M. Houck Jr. of Huntington, W.Va., and Michael J. Rush and Eric R. Rush, both of Portsmouth; two daughters, Lisa Houck of Mansfield, Mass. and Hillary Houck of Amherst; three grandchildren; one sister, Marcia Houck of Amherst; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye. Burial will be in Little River Cemetery, North Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Big Brothers Big Sisters, 8 Center St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Kenneth H. Johnson

HAMPTON - Kenneth H. Johnson, 72, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Riverside Nursing Home, Dover.

He was born Dec. 8, 1929, in Everett, Mass., the son of the late Harold E. and Mabel I. (Keithlin) Johnson. He resided in Melrose, Mass., for several years before moving to Hampton 25 years ago.

He was a graduate of Everett High School and attended the University of New Hampshire.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Johnson was employed by the Morrison & Knudsen Construction Co.

He enjoyed working around his home.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pauline G. (Ericson) Johnson of Hampton; one son and his wife, Scott N. and Doreen M. Johnson of Byfield, Mass.; one daughter and her husband, Lynn J. and Bruce E. McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; five grandchildren; three sisters, Harriet Morris of North Hampton, Dorothy Millen of Wolfeboro and Florence Johnson of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Monday in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church, 36 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton, NH 03842.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Rose Mary LaMarca

NORTH HAMPTON - Rose Mary (DeStefano) LaMarca, 88, of 92 Woodland Road, died Friday, April 12, 2002, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital after a quiet, valiant battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born July 18, 1913, the daughter of Fred and Victoria (DiSanto) DeStefano and was raised in the Italian "North End" of Portsmouth.

Mrs. LaMarca wrote several articles capturing the essence of those days, which were published in the Portsmouth Herald and were included in Raymond Brighton's book, "They Came to Fish."

She was a member of the Seacoast Artists Association and used watercolors to express her love of seascapes and landscapes. She was a loyal Red Sox fan.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Louis J. LaMarca; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan M. and John Henson of Exeter and Barbara M. Howard of Greenland; one son and his wife, Louis J. and Catherine LaMarca II of Hampton Falls; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, J. Albert DeStefano of Portsmouth; and one sister, Edith Geraci of Portsmouth.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at her residence, 92 Woodland Road, North Hampton.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to Child and Family Services of N.H., 99 Hanover St., Manchester, NH 03105.

Arrangements are by the Farrell Funeral Home, Portsmouth.

Tammy M. Runcie

RAYMOND - Tammy Marie (McCusker) Runcie, 40, died Thursday, April 11, 2002, in her home after a lengthy illness.

She was born Oct. 4, 1961, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of Edward and Dorothy (Britton) McCusker of Epping.

She was a graduate of Epping High School.

Mrs. Runcie was employed by Lucent Technologies in No. Andover, Mass., for 16 years.

She enjoyed snowmobiling, gardening and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 20 years, Edward J. Runcie Jr. of Raymond; two sons, Edward J. Runcie III and Bryan Runcie, both of Raymond; one sister, Kelly Smith of Epping; one brother, Edward McCusker Jr. of Epping; her paternal grandmother, Clara McCusker of Hampton; her maternal grandparents, Alfred and Olive Britton of Haverhill; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Memorial services were held Monday in St. Joseph Church, Epping. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Bldg., 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Arrangements were by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Raymond.

Gladys R. Sanborn

BRENTWOOD - Gladys R. Sanborn, 91, of Route 125, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 26, 1911, in London, England, the daughter of Robert and Hannah R. (Mott) Metcalfe. She came to the United States in 1954 and resided in Malden, Mass., before moving to Brentwood in 1958.

Mrs. Sanborn was employed at the Rockingham County Nursing Home for 20 years before retiring in 1981 as a controller.

She received the Outstanding Service Award from the N.H. Association of Counties in 1979 and was the treasurer of the Universalist Society of Fremont.

The widow of Curtis Sanborn, she is survived by one daughter and her husband, Barbara and Ken Lutes of Brentwood; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in England.

Private graveside services will be held April 23 in Exeter Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Charles F. Vetter Sr.

NORTH HAMPTON - Charles F. Vetter Sr., 84, of 11 Woodknoll Drive, died Saturday, April 13, 2002, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born June 10, 1917, in Portsmouth, the son of the late Charles V. and Beatrice (Gardner) Vetter II.

He served with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve as a seaman first class in 1942-1943. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a staff sergeant with the 32nd Division, 128th Infantry.

Mr. Vetter began his career in law enforcement in 1943 when he was hired by the Portsmouth Police Department. Following the war he returned to the department and was promoted to sergeant inspector in 1955 and to lieutenant inspector in 1960. He retired in 1968 after 25 years of service. He served as deputy conservation officer from 1962 until 1977.

He began as a deputy sheriff with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department in 1968 and was promoted to chief deputy sheriff in 1973. He was elected as high sheriff in 1980 and retired in 1986 after 18 1/2 years, totaling 43 1/2 years in law enforcement.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge, No. 1, F&AM of Portsmouth; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; N.H. Consistory 32nd degree of Nashua; and Bektash Shrine of Concord.

He was a life member of Rockingham County Law Enforcement Association and a member of the Frank E. Booma Post 6, American Legion in Portsmouth.

The widower of Ruth (Hargreaves) Vetter, who died in 1981, he is survived by one daughter and her husband, Sylvia and Bob Lincoln of Eliot, Maine; two sons and their wives, Charles F. and Jean Vetter Jr. of Stratham and Wayne E. and Joan Vetter of Newmarket; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Edward H. Vetter Sr. of Eliot; and one sister, Lora Hersey Lester of Portsmouth.

He was predeceased by one granddaughter, Patricia, who died in 1998.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home, Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth.

Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Bldg., 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110-5032.

Charlotte I. Whittemore

NORTH HAMPTON - Charlotte I. Whittemore, 83, of 46 South Road, died Friday, April 11, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born Nov. 13, 1918, in Somerville, Mass., the daughter of the late Alfred M. and Irene (Wall) Stockbridge. She resided in Cambridge, Mass., before moving to North Hampton in 1973.

She was a 1937 graduate of Wakefield (Mass.) High School.

Mrs. Whittemore was a property manager at the Hotel Continental, Cambridge, and a secretary for American Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Wakefield.

She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, William S. Whittemore; one son and his wife, William S. and Patricia Whittemore Jr., of Saratoga, Calif.; two daughters, Judith Lovering and her husband Howard of North Hampton and Carol Montgomery of Waterville, Maine; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, A. Merritt Stockbridge; and four sisters, Evelyn Stimson, Louise Cook, Elizabeth Chatterton and Viola Stockbridge.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter.

Memorial donations may be made to the Rockingham VNA & Hospice, 137 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833.

Malcolm R. Bailey

SEABROOK - Malcolm R. Bailey, 83, of 82 Whipoorwill St., died Monday, April 15, 2002, in New England Medical Center, Boston.

He was born Dec. 20, 1918, in Claremont, the son of the late Ralph C. and Euna (Randall) Bailey. He had resided in Warner, Pembroke and Concord before moving to Seabrook in 1984.

He was a graduate of Claremont High School and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Bailey was a clerk for St. Johnsbury Trucking Co., Willeys Express, R.W. Payne Construction Co. in Keene, and Harvey Construction Co. of Manchester.

He was an avid ballroom dancer at the Carousel Ballroom in Bedford and Rockingham Ballroom in Newmarket.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary E. (Nemiccolo) Bailey; two daughters, Theresa "Tracy" Bailey of Gill, Mass., and Michele "Mikki" Whiting of Norridgewock, Maine; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Thomason of Dennis Port, Mass., and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Dearborn Bailey and Lindy Bailey, and one sister, Jacqueline Fletcher.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.
