Oliver St. Laurent

EPPING - Memorial services for Oliver St. Laurent will be held Saturday, May 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Route 27, Epping.

Mr. St. Laurent died Nov. 9, 2001, in Florida.

James J. Sweeney

EXETER - James J. Sweeney, 58, of Linden Street, died Sunday, May 12, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born Dec. 23, 1943, in Methuen, Mass., the son of Marjorie (Hinnigan) Sweeney of Methuen, and the late Royal Sweeney. He lived most of his life in Methuen and had resided in Exeter for 11 years.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Denise (Finn) Sweeney of Exeter; one daughter, Nikki Moccia of Manchester; one son, Anthony Moccia of Exeter; one sister, Debora Sullivan of Rochester; and many cousins.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the American Cancer Society, Gail Singer Memorial Building, 360 Route 101, Suite 5012, Bedford, NH 03110.

Mary E. Bigwood

NEWTON, Mass. - Mary E. Bigwood, 93, died April 29, 2002, in Maine.

She was born in Newton and had resided there for 46 years. She lived in Melrose, Mass., from 1955 until 1988 and in Scarborough, Maine, for 14 years. She summered in Scituate, Mass., for 40 years.

She was a graduate of Newton High School and a 1926 graduate of Boston University.

Mrs. Bigwood was a clerk at Jordan Marsh Co., in Malden, Mass., in the 1960s and 1970s. She had previously worked in the accounting department of the First National Bank of Boston.

She was a Brownie leader in Newton and Melrose; a member of the Junior Guild of Infant Savior; the Catholic Women's Club; St. Mary's Church in Melrose; the Melrose Women's Club; and St. Kolbe Maximillian Church in Scarborough.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed ice skating and swimming.

The widow of Allan Bigwood, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Mary Ellen and John Maier of Exeter and Linda and David Paul of Scarborough, with whom she made her home; five grandsons; one brother, William Duane of Bourne, Mass.; one sister, Louise O'Reilly of Framingham, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, John, Francis and George Duane, and one sister, Dorothea Downes.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated May 2 in St. Mary Church, Melrose. Burial was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody, Mass.

Arrangements were by the Gately Funeral Home, Melrose.

Adam W. Brewster

SOMERSWORTH - Adam William Brewster, 18, formerly of 243 Green St. and more recently of 19 Gile Pond Road, Franklin, died suddenly Sunday, May 13, 2002.

He was born Nov. 9, 1983, in Portsmouth, the son of William H. Brewster of Franklin and Vicky (Edgerly) Brewster of East Rochester.

He attended Somersworth High School and was enrolled at the Boston Arts Academy as a bass player for a short time.

He was a member of the "Tortura" Band and was deeply moved by his music.

In addition to his father and mother, he is survived by one sister, Tierra Brewster of Somersworth; his maternal grandparents, Carol Edgerly of Haverhill, Mass., and William Edgerly of Middlefield, Conn.; his paternal grandparents, R. William Brewster of Rochester and Jacqueline Eastman of Exeter; his maternal great-grandparents, Nina Fowler of Brooksville, Maine, and Audrey Edgerly of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; his paternal great-grandmother, Blanche Brewster of South Berwick, Maine; one niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday in First Parish United Church of Christ, Congregational, Somersworth ,with the Rev. Mark A. Rideout officiating. Burial was in Forest Glade Cemetery, Somersworth.

Memorial donations may be made to the Somersworth High School Band, c/o Dr. H. Tully, Somersworth, NH 03878.

Arrangements were by the Wiggin-Purdy-McCooey-Dion Funeral Home, Dover.

Arietta E. Brown

NORTH BERWICK, Maine - Arietta E. "Rita" Brown, 90, of Simpson Way, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in York Hospital, York, Maine.

She was born June 5, 1911, in Fremont the daughter of the late Wilfred and Lummina (Renaud) Paul. She lived most of her life in Connecticut and New Hampshire and lived in Epping for 15 years.

Mrs. Brown was employed in several shoe shops in Newmarket, Portsmouth and Exeter for several years.

She enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, crocheting and walking and collected elephant sculptures.

The widow of Joseph Brown, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Richard and Bea Lebeau Sr. of Newmarket and Rene and Bonnie Lebeau of Rochester, N.Y.; one daughter and her husband, Bea and Lanny Lovlien of Epping; one stepson and his wife, George and Mary Brown of Somersworth; two stepdaughters, Jackie Brown and Carol Brown; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Evelyn Landregan of Boynton Beach, Fla.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

Flowers are acceptable.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

Rae Capron

STRATHAM - Graveside services for Rae (Wiggin) Capron will be held Sunday, May 26, at 1 p.m. in Maple Lane Cemetery, Stratham, with the Rev. Mark Strickland of Stratham Community Church, Stratham, officiating. Florence Wiggin, Mrs. Capron's sister-in-law, will be the soloist.

Mrs. Capron died Jan. 7, 2002. She was the widow of Richard B. Capron who died in 1999.

She was co-owner of Bittersweet Kennels of Newfields for many years and owned The Pine Beauty Shop in Stratham for 41 years.

A reception will follow the service in the Fellowship Hall of Stratham Community Church.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Carol A. Davis

EAST KINGSTON - Carol A. Davis, 55, of 23 Depot Road, died Monday, May 13, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, May 25, at 1 p.m. in the East Kingston Town Hall, Route 107, Main Street, East Kingston.

There are no visiting hours. Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carol A. Davis Memorial Fund, c/o East Kingston Public Library, P.O. Box 9, Depot Road, East Kingston, NH 03827.

A complete obituary will be published in Tuesday's edition.

Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Lewis K. Gaffney Sr.

EPPING - Lewis K. Gaffney Sr., 76, of 46 Jenness Road, formerly of Hampton, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at the Rockingham County Nursing Home, Brentwood.

He was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Gloucester, Mass., the son of the late Lewis H. and Alice (Burnham) Gaffney. He had resided in Hampton for 32 years, moving to Epping in 1999.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Gold Star and the Bronze Star.

Mr. Gaffney was employed by the former Bailey Corp., of Seabrook for 22 years, retiring in the early 1990s.

He was a member of the American Legion Post and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter in Claremont.

The widower of Marjorie O. (Stanwood) Gaffney, who died in January, he is survived by two sons, Lewis K. Gaffney Jr., and Stephen P. Gaffney and his wife Gina, all of Epping; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Kain of Parkman, Maine.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Marie L. Gerrish

BEVERLY, Mass. - Marie L. (O'Meara) Gerrish, 75, formerly of Hampton, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Jamaica Plain, Mass.

She was born in Peabody, Mass., the daughter of the late William and Lorretta (O'Flaherty) O'Meara. She was raised in Peabody and had lived in Hampton for 20 years before moving to Beverly seven years ago.

She was a graduate of St. John's High School in Peabody.

Mrs. Gerrish was a waitress at Stromberg's Restaurant and at Marty's Steak House in North Hampton.

She enjoyed the North Shore and traveling.

The widow of Charles B. Gerrish, she is survived by three sons, Stephen Laro of Manchester, Robert Laro of Swampscott, Mass., and Charles Gerrish Jr., of Framingham, Mass.; four daughters, Eileen Jackson of Newburyport, Mass., Karen Cardavelli of Revere, Mass., Linda Bettencourt of Lynn, Mass., and Lori Parrish of Cope, S.C.; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Trainer of Beverly; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, William O'Meara, and three sisters, Margaret Thompson, Florence Brown and Kathleen Barry.

Calling hours will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8:15 in the funeral home followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian burial in St. John the Evangelist Church, Beverly. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Donna Lee

TUCSON, Ariz. - Donna (Taylor) Lee, 34, died unexpectedly April 27, 2002, in Tucson.

She was born June 15, 1967, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of the late Harry R. and Carla (Gage) Taylor, and was raised in Seabrook.

She was educated in Seabrook schools.

She is survived by two sons, Kenneth B. Lee III and Corey A. Pavuk of Tucson; two sisters, Cynthia Hoyt and her husband George of Amesbury, Mass., and Claudia Taylor of Lewiston, Calif.; five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Allen and Carol Taylor of Pittsfield, Cliff and Sue Taylor of Raymond, Dean Taylor of Sanford, Maine, Wayne Taylor of Exeter and Lee and Ginny Taylor of Seabrook; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by one brother, Carl Taylor.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Adair Funeral Home, Tucson.

Michael Lucia

RAYMOND - Michael Lucia, 90, of Brown Road, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at his home after a period of failing health.

He was born March 2, 1912, in Italy, the son of the late John and Grace (Sombocato) Lucia. He was raised in Italy and came to the United State in 1946, settling in Massachusetts. He had resided in Raymond for 32 years.

He was educated in Italy.

Mr. Lucia was a foreman for the Coughlin Co. for 23 years and owned Lucia Villa in Raymond. He was a professional bicycle racer in Italy.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Epping.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Josephine (Bianco) Lucia of Raymond; three daughters, Grace Barrett of Seabrook, Maria Clarke of Stratford, Conn., and Phyllis Sapadin of New York City; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters and one brother in Italy.

He was predeceased by two sons, John Lucia and John Lucia II.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 8 Pleasant St., Epping.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Route 27, Epping. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833.
