Jewell E. Currier

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Jewell Edward Currier, 80, formerly of South Hampton, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Hernando Pasco Hospice, Dade City, Fla.

He was born July 26, 1921, in Amesbury, Mass., the son of the late Earl M. and Ella A. (Jewell) Currier. He had resided in South Hampton and Wakefield before moving to Florida.

He was a graduate of Sanborn Seminary, Kingston, and Essex Agricultural School.

Mr. Currier was a postal clerk at the Amesbury Post Office, retiring in 1982. He had previously worked at the University of New Hampshire.

He served several terms as selectman in South Hampton.

He was a longtime member of St. James Episcopal Church, Amesbury, where he was a former deacon. He was a member and past master of Gideon Lodge of Kingston; a member of Scottish Rite Bodies; Bektash Temple; Fidelity Grange of South Hampton; the New Hampshire Grange; and a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his wife, Doris L. (Hemond) Currier; one son, Ronald L. Currier of South Hampton; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Donald F. Currier of South Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, James E. Currier; and one sister, Dorothy Gray.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Ave., Amesbury. Masonic services will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. by the officers of Gideon Lodge. Grange services will be conducted at 5:45 p.m. by the officers of Fidelity Grange.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. James Episcopal Church, Main Street, Amesbury. Burial will be in Mt. Prospect Cemetery, Amesbury.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 or to the Shriner's Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

Edward J. Goodreau

DOVER - Edward J. Goodreau , 90, of 276 County Farm Road, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Riverside Rest Home.

He was born June 16, 1911, in Newmarket the son of William and Lea (Larochelle) Goudreau. He resided in Exeter before moving to Dover more than 20 years ago.

Mr. Goodreau was a supervisor for Exeter Manufacturing Co. for 42 years.

He was a communicant of St. Mary Church and was an avid walker and enjoyed traveling.

The widower of Edla M. (McIntire) Goodreau, who died in 2000, he is survived by four daughters, Evelyn M. Snow of Bethlehem, Alice A. O'Neil of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Anne M. Winslow of Effingham and Patricia L. Marlowe of Exeter; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Goudreau and Louis Goudreau, both of Newmarket; one sister, Doris Gillis of Newmarket; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard Goudreau and Walter Goudreau; and one sister, Alice Thompson.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Church, corner of Chestnut and Third streets with the Rev. Fritz Cerullo, O.S.A., pastor, as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Riverside Rest Home, 276 County Farm Road, Dover, NH 03820.

Dr. Herbert W. Jackson

EXETER - Dr. Herbert W. Jackson, 91, of RiverWoods of Exeter died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at his home.

He was born Jan. 5, 1911, in Durham, the son of C. Floyd Jackson and Alma I. (Drayer) Jackson.

He attended Tabor Academy and was a 1934 graduate of Dartmouth College. He received his doctorate degree from Cornell Graduate School in 1939.

Dr. Jackson was chief biologist at the U.S. Public Health Headquarters in Cincinnati for 22 years, retiring in 1972. During this time he published 25 technical papers. He had previously been an associate professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., for 12 years and was a consultant with Rockefeller Foundation in Mexico in 1949-50.

He was a member of St. John's Lodge No. 1, F&AM in Portsmouth; and past master of Hunters Lodge No. 156 in Blacksburg, Va.

He was listed in the 1970 edition of Who's Who and was a member of the American Fisheries Society; the Water Pollution Control Federation; the New England Estuarine Research Society and the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography.

Dr. Jackson was a member of the Durham Historic Association; a former trustee of the trust funds and a Durham cemetery trustee; past president of the Great Bay Estuary System Conservation Trust; a member of the Community Church of Durham and the Silver Squares of Durham.

He was active with the Shoal Marine Laboratory Co-op at Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, and held the title of commodore of the barnacles. The Jackson Estuarine Laboratory located at Adam's Point, Durham, was named after his father.

He remained active at RiverWoods and enjoyed spending time in the woodworking shop, which he helped design.

He is survived by one daughter, Paulina Adams of Tacoma, Wash.; two grandchildren; one stepson, Charles P. Shimer of Richmond, Va.; and a close friend, Cecilia Van Voorhis of RiverWoods.

He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Muriel (Andrews) Jackson, who died in 1986, and his second wife, Helen Shimer, who died in 1994.

Memorial services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Great Bay Room at RiverWoods. Private burial will be in Durham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Professor C. Floyd and Mrs. Jackson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Marine Program, c/o UNH Alumni Center, Durham, NH 03824, or to the charity of one's choice.

Lillian Pearce

RAYMOND - Lillian Pearce, 76, of 4 Ledgewood Lane, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born March 3, 1926, in Milton, Mass., the daughter of the late Gilmore and Anna (Coburn) Sanfilippo. She resided on the South Shore of Massachusetts, moving to Hampton in 1959. She moved to Florida in 1979 and had most recently lived in Exeter, Epping and Raymond.

Mrs. Pearce enjoyed music, gardening, flowers, crafts and children.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Rudolph A. Pearce; four sons, Stephen Pearce of North Hampton, John Pearce of Wolfeboro Falls, William Pearce of Newmarket and Thomas Pearce of Heathrow, Fla.; four daughters, Carolyn Bray of Nashua, Sandra Hunt of Houston, Sharon Mulligan of Brandon, Fla., and Barbara Bragg of Nottingham; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Walter Dunbar of Abington, Mass., and Fred Dunbar of Norwell, Mass.; and two sisters, Bertha Hill of California and Jessie Bradley of Hingham, Mass.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, North Hampton.

Henry B. Rypma

EPPING - Henry B. Rypma, 77, of 54 Pleasant St., died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

He was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Revere, Mass., the son of Theodore and Bertha (Harmsen) Rypma and had resided in Epping for many years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving on various subMarines.

Mr. Rypma was a master electrician and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He was a member of the Emerson-Hovey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 168 and the Frank Booma American Legion Post 6, both of Portsmouth; the American Citizens Club of Polish Descent and the Lamprey Aerie 1934, Fraternal Order of Eagles of Newmarket.

He is survived by his wife of nine years, Paula (Eaton) Rypma of Epping; one daughter, Deborah Miller of Maryland; one sister, Jennie Yurashek of Revere; two nieces; and one stepson, Larry April of Newmarket.

He was predeceased by one sister, Marjorie Bandoni.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter St., Newmarket. American Legion Services will be held at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.

Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to Massachusetts General Hospital or to the charity of one's choice.

Doris L. Anderson

EXETER - Doris L. Anderson, 75, of Main Street, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Everett, Mass., the daughter of the late Sven R. and Elen (Olson) Durfer. She resided in Arlington and Reading, Mass., and Newfields before moving to Exeter six years ago.

Mrs. Anderson was a cutter at Milliken Industries in Exeter for many years.

She enjoyed spending her days at Seaside Elderly Day Out Center for several years.

The widow of Hans Christian Anderson, she is survived by two sons, Jack Noel of Newfields and Richard Noel of South Hampton; one daughter, Diane Achorn of Springhill, Fla.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ed Durfer of Milton, Mass.

She was predeceased by one son, Robert Noel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Calling hours will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Newfields Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Lucy E. Dawson

HAMPTON - Lucy Eleanor (Manix) Dawson, 85, of 5 Cogger St., died Friday, May 31, 2002, at her home.

She was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Beverly, Mass., the daughter of the late Cornelius and Lucy M. (Dockum) Manix and was raised in Exeter.

She attended Exeter schools and was a 1935 graduate of Robinson Female Seminary serving as president of her class. She attended the Margaret Pillsbury College of Nursing in Concord and received her nursing degree from Bellevue Hospital in New York City.

She was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of World War II serving in the ATC Division as a first lieutenant nurse in the Medical Corps.

Mrs. Dawson was an occupational health nurse at GTE Sylvania of Exeter, retiring in 1979. She had previously served as a nurse for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., Simplex Wire and Cable Co. in Newington, and as a staff nurse with the Red Cross Blood Mobile in North Hampton.

She was an active member of the Monday Club of Hampton; the Senior Citizens Club of Hampton; the Hampton American Legion; the Disabled Veterans of Newington; the Women's Military Association of N.H.; the Hampton Recreation Advising Committee; the Rockingham County Area Senior Advising Committee; the Robinson Female Seminary Alumnae Association; the N.H. Retired Officer's Club; the American Association of Retired People, Exeter Area Chapter; Retired Senior Volunteer Program-Seacoast Area; the Hampton Republican Committee; Oasis Club at Exeter Hospital; the Rockingham Advisory Committee on Aging; and the Harmony Club Nurses Group.

She was a volunteer at Seacoast Health Center in Hampton and placed calls to shut-ins.

The widow of James Dawson, who died in 1978, she is survived by two step-grandchildren, Michael Thompson of San Diego, Calif., and James Thompson and his wife, Ann, of Ashland, Mass.; three brothers, William E. Manix Sr. and Thomas C. Manix, both of Exeter, and James J. Manix of Fairfield, Calif.; one sister, Lena Knight of Columbus, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by one stepdaughter, Jacqueline Dawson Thompson; one brother, John Manix; one sister, Cornelia Huntington; and one son-in-law, Jack Thompson.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Mark K. Forman Jr.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Mark K. Forman Jr., 77, died May 1, 2002, in Flagler Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Danville, Ill., the son of the late Mark and Gladys Forman. He resided in Worcester, Mass., before moving to St. Augustine many years ago.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and served with the reserves retiring as a captain after 21 years of service, and also served with the National Guard.

He was a life member of the Massachusetts Masonic Lodge and a member of the Disabled Veterans, St. Augustine Chapter No. 6.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Doris (Baker) Forman of St. Augustine; four daughters, Alicia Drakiotes of Marlboro, Lucinda Woodlee and Jodie Manuel of Hampton Beach, and Rebecca Carpenter of Hillsboro; one stepdaughter, Susan Lawrence of Westfield, Pa.; one stepson, Jeffrey Lawrence of Charleston; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Morehead of Houston, Tex.

Memorial services were held May 8 in St. Augustine Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Swaringen officiating. Burial will be in Florida National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Disabled Veterans, St. Augustine Chapter No. 6, 705 Segovia Road, St. Augustine, FL 32086.

Arrangements were by the Craig Funeral Home and Crematory, St. Augustine.
