Lois M. Gardner

EXETER - Lois M. Gardner, 79, of 149 Brentwood Road, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at her home.

She was born May 16, 1923, in Northampton, Mass., the daughter of the late Mark and Esther (Coburn) Wilson. She was raised in Brookfield, Mass., and resided in Brattleboro, Vt., before recently moving to Exeter.

She was a 1941 graduate of Brookfield High School.

Mrs. Gardner worked in the food service department at the Brattleboro Nursing Home.

She was a volunteer for the Brattleboro and Monadnock Humane Societies and loved animals, especially horses and dogs.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Wilbur M. Gardner of Exeter; one daughter, Peggy Ann Fawley Woods and her husband Joseph of Exeter; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Private services were held in Exeter Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Monadnock Humane Society, P.O. Box 678, W. Swansey, NH 03469.

Arrangements were by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Donal P. McGael

NEWMARKET - Donal P. McGael, 68, of Dame Road died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a sudden illness.

He was born July 13, 1933, in Hampstead, N.Y., and had resided in Westport, Conn., before coming to Newmarket in 1982.

He was a graduate of St. Michael's College, Winooski, Vt.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving from 1954 to 1975, retiring as a major. He was a member of TROA.

Mr. McGael worked in the Westport School System from 1976 until 1981 and was a member of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department.

He was active in Newmarket town government and had been a member of the budget committee for many years serving as chairman for several years. He served as clerk of the works for the construction of Newmarket Elementary School.

He was a member of St. Mary Church, Newmarket.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maureen (Murphy) McGael of Newmarket; six children, Kevin McGael of Durham, Eileen Hanson of Minnesota, Tara McGael of North Carolina, Kathleen Bouton of Connecticut, Brandon McGael of Colorado and Desiree Douglas of Newmarket; many grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Gudrun Olsen

HAMPTON - Gudrun "Goody" Olsen, 86, of 22 Tuck Road, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Seacoast Health Center.

She was born July 31, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Harold and Anne Johnson and had resided in New London, Conn., before moving to Hampton.

Mrs. Olsen was a retired administrative assistant for the Cadet Musical Activities Department at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where she also ran the Visitor Center.

She was a long time member of First Church of Christ Congregational in New London where she served as a deacon, adult and handbell choir member and was the creator and editor of the church newsletter, "The Spire."

She served on the board of directors of the YWCA in New London; volunteered at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital and Seaside Regional Center; and was a member of the Faire Harbour Club of New London.

The widow of Gustav "Gus" Olsen, she is survived by one son and his wife, David G. and Janice Olsen of Hampton; one daughter and her husband, Elyse and Alan Saunders of Duluth, Ga.; four grandchildren; her twin brother, Fred Johnson of East Palestine, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Edward Johnson and Harold Johnson.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntingston St., New London.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in First Church of Christ Congregational, Union Street, New London.

Stephen D. Philbrick

NEWMARKET - Stephen D. Philbrick, 55, of New Road died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at his home.

He was born Jan. 23, 1947, in Portsmouth the son of John O. and Helen (Moore) Philbrick.

He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and attended the University of New Hampshire for two years.

He joined the Coast Guard in 1968 and was assigned to breaker duty in the North Pole and South Pole.

Upon leaving the Coast Guard in 1972 Mr. Philbrick began working as a heavy equipment operator for his brother at Roger Philbrick Inc., in Rye. He remained there until the time of his illness.

He was a 30-year member, trustee and four-time commander of the Robert G. Durgin American Legion Post No. 67 in Newmarket and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose No. 443 in Dover.

He attended Rye Congregational Church.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, playing cards, boating, working in his yard, traveling, and working on the family farm in Rye.

He is survived by his wife, Linda (Menter) Philbrick of Newmarket; one daughter, Andrea Rumans of Rochester; one stepson, Chad Hill of Newmarket; three grandchildren; three brothers, Roger Philbrick, Richard Philbrick and Alden Philbrick, all of Rye; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, Lois Ann Rockwell.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Rye Congregational Church, 580 Washington Road, Rye, with Pastor John Solie officiating. Burial will follow in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Paul B. Condon

RYE - Paul Bigelow Condon, 73, of 465 Sagamore Road died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

He was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Boston, the son of the late Orbin C. and Edna J. (Robinson) Condon. He had been a resident of Rye for 15 years and before wintering in Fort Myers, Fla., he enjoyed winters snowmobiling at his home Erroll.

He was a 1947 graduate of Newton (Mass.) High School and a 1952 graduate of Northeastern University where he pitched for the baseball team.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict.

Mr. Condon retired from the Xerox Corp., in 1987 as a plant manager after 20 years of service. He had previously been employed by the former Western Electric Co., in North Andover, Mass.

He attended Rye Congregation Church.

He served as chairman of the Groveland School Board and of the Building Committee of the Pentucket Regional Middle School.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and golfing and was an avid fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Jane (Odiorne) Condon; two daughters, Robin J. Murphy and her husband Joseph of Saugus, Mass., and Sharon A. Little of South Portland, Maine; one son and his wife, Paul B. and Deborah Condon Jr., of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Manning of Fort Myers and Alice Andrews of Hartland, Mich.; two brothers, John Condon of Chatham, Mass., and James Condon of Fresno, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday in Rye Congregation Church. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Memorial donations may be made to the Odiorne Homestead Restoration, c/o Treasurer, State of N.H., P.O. Box 606, Rye, NH 03870.

Arrangements were by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, Hampton.

Gladys I. Fife

BREMERTON, Wash. - Gladys Isabelle Fife, 89, died May 22, 2002, of a heart attack.

She was born April 28, 1913, in Los Angeles the daughter of Irving Roscious and Amy E. (Gahan) Gilbert. She came to New England as a child and had resided in Greenland for several years before retiring to Yuma, Ariz.

She was educated in local schools.

Mrs. Fife was a housekeeper for professors at the University of New Hampshire and was a nursing assistant.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rodney Fife; two daughters and their husbands, Janet and Wayne of Sargent of Sale Creek, Tenn., and Lee and Ivan Bunker of Port Orchard, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lillian Kelloway of Newburyport, Mass.

She was predeceased by two sons, Frank and Edward Kimball; and two brothers, Lloyd Gilbert and James Lindley.

James J. Manix

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - James Jordan Manix, 75, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in Vacaville, Calif. after a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 3, 1926, in Exeter, the son of the late Cornelius and Lucy M. (Dockum) Manix, and had resided in Fairfield for 39 years.

He was a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam retiring as a staff sergeant in 1965 after 20 years of service.

Mr. Manix and his wife owned the Puppet Factory for 12 years. He had worked in civil service at Travis Air Force Base retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the American Legion.

He enjoyed making puppets and giving tours to children at his factory.

He is survived by his wife, Takeko Manix of Fairfield; two sons and their wives, Cornelius and Julie Manix of Sicily, and Patrick and Pamela Manix of Poulsbo, Wash.; four grandchildren; two brothers, William Manix and Tom Manix, both of Exeter; one sister, Lena Knight of Columbus, Ga.

He was predeceased by one brother, John Manix; and two sisters, Cornelia Huntington and Lucy Eleanor Dawson, who died May 31.

Memorial services with military honors will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, Fairfield, with Chaplain Gretchen Shilts officiating. Private burial will be in Fairmont Memorial Park.

Jeanne McKeon

SWAMPSCOTT, Mass. - Jeanne (Whitney) McKeon, 75, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at her daughter's home in Hampton.

She was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Stoneham, Mass., the daughter of the late William D. and Mary I. (Dignan) Whitney and was raised in Melrose, Mass.

She was a graduate of Jeanne D'Arc Academy in Milton, Mass., and attended Fay School, Boston.

Mrs. McKeon was a flight attendant for American Airlines for many years. She was later employed in real estate in Melrose and in advertising with Suburban News in Reading, Mass.

She enjoyed antiques and home decorating and operated Spider's Web Antique Store in Reading.

She was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott, and was past president of the Guild at Our Lady of Nazareth Academy in Wakefield, Mass.

The widow of Paul K. McKeon, she is survived by three daughters, Jeanne McKeon of Swampscott, Christine Wilcox of Herndon, Va., and Rosemary Lamers of Hampton; one son, Paul J. McKeon of Stratham; eight grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Kyle of Memphis, Tenn.; and one brother, Paul Whitney of Naples, Fla.

She was predeceased by three brothers, William, David and Thomas Whitney.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 8 a.m. in the funeral home followed at 9 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham, Mass. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
