Robert O.E. Elliot

KENNEBUNK, Maine - Robert O.E. Elliot, 99, died Sunday, July 28, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Hyde Park, Mass., and was raised in Woolwich, Maine, before moving to Hampton and returning to Maine.

He was a graduate of Hampton Academy and Boston University.

Mr. Elliot retired in 1971 as director for travel and tourism for the Maine Department of Economic Development. He had previously worked for the Hampton Union, the Boston Herald-Traveler and the Portsmouth Herald. He wrote a rod and gun column for the Portsmouth Herald and wrote fish and game publicity for the State of New Hampshire. In 1946 he took a position as director of Recreational Promotion for the Maine Development Commission. He worked for several state of Maine agencies, including Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

After his retirement he remained active promoting travel and tourism for the New England Camping and Travel Association and the Heritage Trail Foundation as well as performing public relations for a firm which imported Hardy fishing tackle.

Mr. Elliot was a free-lance writer, photojournalist and author. He published a wide variety of books, including "The Eastern Brook Trout," "All About Trout," "Bass Fishing in New England," "Salmon Fishing in New England," "Trout from Maine to California," and "The Making of an Angler."

He also had more than 100 articles and stories appear in national publications such as Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, True, Argosy, and Fur Fish and Game. He served as contributing editor to Field and Stream for several years and also contributed to three hunting and fishing encyclopedias.

Mr. Elliot was a lifetime member of the New England Outdoor Writers Association, serving on the board of directors. He was a past master of Augusta Lodge No. 141 A.F.&A.M.; a member of the Kora Temple Shrine in Lewiston, Maine, and the Maine Association of Retirees; and received the Silver Trout Award from the Trout Unlimited Organization.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, fly fishing, hunting upland birds and golfing.

He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Annie (Colwell) Elliot of Kennebunk; one daughter and her husband, Ann and Enrique Rico of Houston, Tex.; two sons; Neil Elliot of McMinnville, Ore., and Dale Elliot of Mount Vernon, Maine; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Elliot of Hampton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Harvey Elliot; two brothers, John and Ben; and two sisters, Alice and Mae.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 17, at 2 p.m. in Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Belgrade, Maine.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made to the American Cancer Society.

David D. Learned

SEABROOK - David D. Learned, 52, of 87 Seabrook Village, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born Sept. 25, 1949, in Peabody, Mass., the son of the late Milton E. and Anna M. (Woodbury) Learned. He had resided in Haverhill, Mass., for many years before moving to Seabrook in 1998.

Mr. Learned was a licensed plumber and was a working foreman for the city of Haverhill for 13 years.

He was a member of the Truck Drivers Union Local 170 of Worcester, Mass.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa "Terri" M. (Trovato) Learned of Seabrook; three daughters, Shani Gamble of South Hampton and Noelle Learned and Heather Learned, both of Haverhill; three stepdaughters, Nicole Wright of Haverhill, Natasha Wright of Salem and Ashley Gould of Seabrook; two grandchildren; two brothers, Michael Learned of Seabrook and Joseph Learned of Marietta, S.C.; three sisters, Patricia Sarao of Salisbury, Mass., Mary Szymczak of Seabrook and Ann Gaudreau of Exeter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one sister, June Waugh.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Patricia A. Nickerson

HAMPTON - Patricia Ann Nickerson, 53, of 46 Mill Road, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, in Elliot Hospital, Manchester, after a brief illness.

She was born July 15, 1949, in Boston, the daughter of M. Leo and Theresa M. (Kelly) Kelly of Hampton and was raised in Marshfield, Mass..

She was a 1967 graduate of Marshfield High School.

Mrs. Nickerson was an active partner with her husband in the family business, Sea Port Property Maintenance Co. for 15 years.

She was a member and faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, was an avid roller skater and enjoyed reading.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband of 35 years, Bruce I. Nickerson; four daughters, Michelle Rowell of Franklin, Christine Nali of Hampton, Linda-Jean Dionne and her husband Sean of North Hampton and Jennifer L. "JJ" Nickerson of Hampton; four grandchildren; two brothers, Robert F. Kelly of Mattapoisett, Mass., and James M. Kelly of Hampton; one sister, Donna M. MacFadden of Salisbury, Mass.; her mother-in-law, Marilyn Cote of Norwood, Mass.; her father-in-law, Irvin W. Nickerson of Durham; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church, Hampton Falls. After cremation, private burial will be in High Street Cemetery, Hampton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls Music Fund, 3 Lincoln Ave., Hampton Falls, NH 03844.

Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.

John F. Duffy

EPPING - John F. Duffy, 75, of Bartlett Street, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born April 27, 1927, in Boston, the son of the late Charles and Jean (Poncey) Duffy. He had been a resident of Swampscott, Mass., for 30 years before moving to Epping in 1985.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Duffy was employed by the General Electric Co. in Lynn, Mass., for 43 years, retiring in 1987 as a generator assembler.

He was a member and former commander of the Kensington American Legion. He enjoyed visiting flea markets and yard sales and was an avid stamp collector.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joan Thornton Duffy of Epping; three sons, Stephen Duffy of Salisbury, Mass., Timothy Duffy of Maine and Kerri Duffy of Marblehead, Mass.; three daughters, Diane Stead of West Virginia, Heather Ricardo of Maine and Laurie Acuff of Illinois; two stepsons, Timothy Thornton of Raymond and Sean Thornton of Epping; one stepdaughter, Debra Thornton of Revere, Mass.; 14 grandchildren; one sister, Renee McCrillis of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one stepson, Thomas Thornton Jr.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Route 27, Epping. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Epping.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 360 Route 101, Suite 501, Bedford, NH 03110.

Gordon Ellison

ROCHESTER - Gordon Ellison, 52, of 45 Congress St., died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, in Frisbie Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born April 22, 1950, in Exeter, the son of George W. Ellison and the late Evelyn (Elliott) Ellison.

Mr. Ellison was employed by S&S Concrete and Lee Mobile in Lee.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, writing and Kool-Aid.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Minnie (Eaton) Ellison of Rochester; one son, Robert Bryant of Ohio; four daughters, Kelly Knox of Lebanon, Maine, Linda Burleigh of Raymond, Susan Ellison of Contoocook and Debbie Ellison of Somersworth; six grandchildren; one brother, Billy Ellison of Nottingham; four sisters, Beverly Lee of Barrington, Shirley Libby of Rochester, Rosemary Worthler of Plymouth and Linda Ellison of Newmarket.

Funeral services were held Saturday in the R.M. Edgerly and Son Funeral Home, Rochester.

Memorial donations may be made to Minnie Ellison, c/o Kelly Knox, P.O. Box 292, Lebanon, ME 04027.

Hollis J. Leary

SEABROOK BEACH - A Memorial Mass for Hollis J. Leary will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at 4 p.m. in St. Elizabeth Church, Route 1A, Seabrook Beach.

Mr. Leary, of 33 Highland Ave., Hampton Beach, a former Boston firefighter, died June 13. 2002.

Florence Morin

KINGSTON - Florence (Herbert) (Kramer) Morin, 89, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, in Falmouth (Mass.) Hospital.

She was born March 9, 1913, in Dover and had resided in Merrimac, Mass., before moving to Kingston in 1960. She had been a resident of Bourne Manor, Bourne, Mass., since 1998.

Mrs. Morin worked at Engel-Lewis Counter Shop in Merrimac, Kingston Stitching and Western Electric (now Lucent Technologies) in North Andover, Mass.

She was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Kingston and traveled extensively to Germany, England, California and Arizona.

She was an active crafter and crocheted many quilts and blankets, even while at the nursing home.

She is survived by two sons, Donald Kramer of Tustin, Calif., and William Kramer of Mashpee, Mass.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three stepchildren, Vaughn Morin of Stratham, Leslee Cunningham of Newton and Judy Bernier of Fremont; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Kramer; her second husband, Earnest Morin; and one son, Robert Kramer.

Funeral services were held Monday in the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery, Kingston.

Erling W. Beairsto

EXETER - Erling W. Beairsto, 92, of Buzzell Avenue, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born Oct. 25, 1909, in Amesbury, Mass., the son of the late Alfred E. and Lottie (Colby) Beairsto and had resided in Exeter for more than 60 years.

He was a graduate of Newton (Mass.) High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Beairsto owned a construction company and was a former member of the Exeter Sportsman's Club.

The widower of Barbara E. Beairsto, who died in 1997, he is survived by one sister, Bessie Swaine of Auburndale, Mass.; one brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Carolyn Jeffrey of Plaistow; and several nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in Lovell Lake Cemetery, Sanbornville.

Memorial donations may be made to the Exeter Meals on Wheels Program, Exeter Senior Center, 30 Court St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Maurice F. Brown Jr.

HAMPTON - Maurice F. Brown Jr., 84, of 254 High St., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born March 24, 1918, in Epping, the son of the late Maurice F. and Helen (Caraway) Brown. He had resided in Hampton since 1959 coming from Exeter. and had wintered in Kissimmee, Fla., for 15 years.

He was a graduate of Watson Academy, Epping, and Hesser Business College.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a staff sergeant with the 336th Ordnance Depot Company.

Mr. Brown was a deputy clerk with the New Hampshire Superior Court working for several years in the former Rockingham County Justice Building in Exeter. He had previously worked for the former Swift & Co. in their chemical division for 32 years.

He was a member and former deacon of First Congregational Church, Hampton; a member of Ocean Side Grange No. 260; East Rockingham Pomona Grange No. 11; N.H. State Grange; the National Grange; the Hampton Walking Club; the Seacoast Striders of Portsmouth; the Hampton Historical Society; and the Hampton's American Legion Post No. 35.

He was a member of St. James Lodge No. 102 F&AM; Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; the N.H. Consistory Valley of Nashua; Bektash Temple Shrine of Concord and Patrol C of the Temple; Portsmouth Shrine Club; the Gen. William Whipple Military Lodge of Portsmouth; the East Gate Club of Seabrook; and the Society of Veteran Freemasons.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Agnes M. (Collins) Brown; one son and his wife, Robert C. and Theresa Brown of Germany; one daughter, Sheree L. Brown of Hampton; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Lewis W. Brown; and one sister, Sylvia B. Moulton.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

American Legion Services will be conducted Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Masonic services will be held Friday at 6:45 p.m. in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in First Congregational Church, 127 Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Central Cemetery, Epping.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Burn Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.

HAMPTON BEACH - Margaret L'Engle Chase, 93, of 1026 Ocean Blvd., died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

She was raised in Asheville, N.C., and had resided in Shirley Center, Mass., Daytona Beach, Fla., Exeter and Hampton.

She attended Converse College in South Carolina.

Mrs. Chase was a member of the Exeter Hospital Guild; the Exeter Historical Society and the Exeter Episcopal Church Women. She organized the Exeter Christ Church rummage sale and hosted gatherings for the church women at her home. She was a volunteer at the libraries where he lived.

She was an avid swimmer, golfer and competitive bridge player and an amateur watercolor artist.

The widow of Donald A. Chase, she is survived by one daughter, Jaqueline L'Engle Chase of Inverness, Calif.; one son, Aquila Chase of Santa Barbara, Calif.; one grandson; and one sister, Sr. Madeleine L'Engle Theoktisto of St. Mary's Convent, Sewanee, Tenn.

Memorial services will be held Sept. 14 at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Church Episcopal. 43 Pine St., Exeter. A reception will be held Sept. 14 at 4:30 p.m. in the Great Room at RiverWoods, 7 RiverWood Drive, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ Church, 43 Pine St., Exeter, NH 03833.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.
