Josephine Campbell

RYE - Josephine "Jo" Campbell, of 82 Liberty Common, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Michael and Ina Campbell.

She attended Keane College in New Jersey and during the 1960s she became a peace activist fighting for women’s and civil rights. She received her master’s degree in business administration in management from Antioch College.

She was an elementary school teacher in the Piscataway, N.J. school system and joined the teacher’s union, NEA-NJ and became the local NEA president. She worked as the NEA-NH Uniserve director of the Seacoast after serving a brief period in the North Country. She was instrumental in obtaining the NEA-NH Endorsement for the living wage campaign. She served as staff liaison for the state’s human and civil rights committee and for the state’s education support personnel, remaining active in her own union serving terms as president and bargaining chairman.

She enjoyed swimming and relaxing by the ocean, traveling to Ireland, Scotland, Turkey, Greece and Yugoslavia and visited many areas of the U.S. She was an avid reader.

She is survived by her husband, Keith W. Eveland of Rye; one son and his wife, Gary and Linda Giacomarra of New York City; one daughter and her husband, Reid Giacomarra and Andy Marancik of New Jersey; one grandson; two stepchildren, Leslie Eveland of Avalon, Australia, and Katy Eveland of Portsmouth; two sisters, Betty Vail and Mary "May" McMaster; one brother, Danny Campbell; and her former husband, John Giacomarra.

She was predeceased by one stepchild, Bradley Eveland.

In keeping with her wishes there will be no visiting hours.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Portsmouth, 292 State St., Portsmouth.

Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity/Southeast N.H., 33 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, NH 03801.

Arrangements are by the Robert K. Gray Jr. Funeral Home, Hampton.

Joseph G. Haley Jr.

EXETER - Joseph G. "Gil" Haley Jr., 78, of 5 Stevens Court, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was born May 25, 1924, in Exeter, the son of the late Joseph G. Sr. and Ursila (Marshall) Haley.

He was a graduate of Exeter High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Haley was the owner of Haley’s Lawn Maintenance for 56 years.

He was active with the United Methodist Church of Exeter, the New Life Ministry of Rye and the former Advent Christian Church of Exeter, serving as a Sunday school teacher, school superintendent and Elder. He was a member of Gideon International and a life member of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship, serving as field representative for the state of New Hampshire.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nellie (Otis) Haley of Exeter; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph G. and Wallie Haley III of Cummings, Ga., Nathan Haley, David Haley, and Jonathan and April Haley, all of Exeter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Dennis Worrall of Gorham, Maine, and Rebecca and CMSGT Elton Kelley of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren; one sister, Helen Harris of Sparks, Nev.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Exeter United Methodist Church, 307 Epping Road, Exeter. Burial will be in Exeter Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Exeter United Methodist Church Building Fund, 307 Epping Road, Exeter, NH 03833, to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833, or to the mission of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter.

Jon R. Olson

BARRINGTON - Jon R. Olson, 63, of Route 126, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Dover, after a brief illness.

He was born May 24, 1939, in Melrose, Mass., the son of the late Melvin and Kathleen (Stevens) Olson. He was raised in Melrose, moving to Brentwood in 1961 and to Barrington in 1986.

He was educated in Melrose schools.

Mr. Olson was self-employed most of his life, and owned Jon R. Olson Excavating from 1979 until 2002, and Brentwood Hot Top from 1965 until 1979.

He was the former road agent in Brentwood.

He enjoyed fishing and boating and was a member of the Wentworth-By-The-Sea Tuna Club.

He is survived by one daughter, Arlene Olson of Rye; one son, Dan Olson of Barrington; his longtime companion, Chantal Kimball of Barrington; one sister, Cheryl O’Connell of Rowley, Mass.; his former wife, Peggy (DiNardi) Olson of Reddington Shores, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one son, Jon R. Olson Jr., who died in 1979.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Pilgrim United Church, Route 111A, Brentwood. Burial will follow in Brentwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the N.H. SPCA, P.O. Box 196, Stratham, NH 03885, Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833, or a local SPCA of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Joel N. Taylor

MANCHESTER - Joel N. Taylor, 90, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, in a Manchester hospital.

He was born Sept. 2, 1912, in Anna, Ill., the son of Joseph C. and Gertrude (Womick) Taylor and had resided in Manchester since 1947, previously residing in Durham.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Taylor was a retired department manager with Sears & Roebuck.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church and the church’s Senior Citizens organization, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Richard K. Harvell Post No. 8401 in Bedford.

He enjoyed woodworking and furniture making, gardening and fishing.

The widower of Evelyn W. (Beers) Taylor, who died in 1994, he is survived by one son, Jay E. Taylor of Hooksett; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Juanita McConaughey and Ruth Conlan, both of Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Wednesday in the Goodwin Funeral Home, Manchester. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery, Epping.

Memorial donations may be made to the Richard K. Harvell Post 8401, VFW, P.O. Box 10144, Bedford, NH 03110.

Josephine A. Rowe

PORTSMOUTH - Josephine Annabelle (Calef Chamberlain) Rowe, 96, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center of Portsmouth.

She was born Oct. 3, 1906, in East Dedham, Mass., the daughter of the late Chase F. Calef and Cecilia (Bates) Calef Chamberlain Lawton, and received her middle name from her godmother, Annabelle Whitford, who was a Ziegfield Follies Girl. She had resided in Sugar Hill and in Roslindale, Mass.

She attended Dow Academy, Sugar Hill, graduating as class salutatorian at age 15, and was a 1923 graduate of Bryant & Stratton Business School.

Mrs. Rowe was a legal secretary in Boston for many years.

She served as a den mother with her son’s cub scout troop and in the Demolay Mother’s Club. She was a member of the West Roxbury Women’s Club; the West Roxbury-Roslindale Senior Citizens Club; the Order of Eastern Star, Roslindale Chapter, No. 104 and Samoset Chapter, No. 109, where she served as worthy matron in 1953, 1967 and 1987.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, crocheting and knitting.

The widow of Wesley Rowe, who died in 1982, she is survived by one son and his wife, Wesley J. and Anne Rowe of Greenland; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Organ Fund, Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 High St., Hampton, NH 03842.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Mildred G. Yeager

EXETER - Mildred G. Yeager, 77, of Coach Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

She was born May 28, 1925, in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Mildred A. (Pigeon) Gallagher. She was a longtime resident of Kingston, and had lived in Exeter for seven years.

Mrs. Yeager was a real estate agent in the Exeter area for many years.

She was communicant of St. Michael Church, Exeter, and was a volunteer at Exeter Hospital.

The widow of Lt. Col. George G. Yeager, who died in 1974, she is survived by two daughters, Amelia Y. Greenlee of Stoney Point, N.Y., and Germaine Y. Hayes of Newmarket; two granddaughters; one sister, Germaine G. Ward of Lake Forest, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in St. Michael Church, Front and Lincoln streets, Exeter. Burial will follow in Exeter Cemetery.

Carolyn Novitch

FARMINGTON - Carloyn (Dalpe) Novitch, 58, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, after a long illness.

She was born Sept. 14, 1944, in Haverhill, Mass., the daughter of Rita (Crepeau) Dalpe of Exeter and the late Robert J. Dalpe. She had been a resident of Farmington for the past three years, previously residing in Exeter and Marlboro, Mass.

Besides her mother, she is survived by her daughter, Nicole Mancini of Farmington; a sister, Mary Molinek of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Robert Dalpe of Marlboro, Mass., Donald Dalpe and wife Mary, also of Marlboro, and John and wife Deborah of Newburyport, Mass.; and two grandsons.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Church, Exeter.

Carol S. Beckwith

RYE - Carol S. (Starbard) Beckwith, 65, died Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born July 4, 1935, in Boston, the daughter of the late Clifton A. and Janice B. (Cook) Starbard. She had summered in Rye for 25 years, and moved there year-round in 1994.

She was a 1955 graduate of Melrose (Mass.) High School and attended Boston University.

Mrs. Beckwith followed in her fifth-great-uncle’s footsteps, The Rev. William Bentley, diarist of Salem, Mass., writing and editing. As a freelancer, she copy edited textbooks and trade publications for all the major Boston publishers, in addition to news reporting for the Reading Chronicle. After moving to Rye, she worked in the office at the Hampton Union, and with her husband produced the Town of Rye Newsletter.

A life-long Democrat, she spent much of her adult life involved in political activity and humanistic causes.

She was a member of the Library Board of Trustees and a town meeting member in Reading, Mass., for many years. She was a member of the Reading Library Building Committee and participated in the creation of a new library from a decommissioned school. She became involved in civic affairs in Rye, assisting in the information campaign for the building expansion of Rye Junior High School and serving as a supervisor of the checklist.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, John "Jack" Beckwith of Rye; two sons, Geoffrey C. Beckwith and his wife, Drucilla, of Reading, and Derek Beckwith of Watertown, Mass.; one daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Brooke Lemoine of Merrimack; six grandchildren; one brother, Craig B. Starbard of Sandwich, Mass.; and one niece and nephew.

A Celebration of Life service was held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton. Interment followed in Central Cemetery, Rye.

Curtis R. Young

DANVILLE - Curtis R. Young, 58, of 47 Judith St., died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Mass.

Mr. Young was born Oct. 31, 1943, in Haverhill, the son of Phyllis L. (McNulty) Young of Haverhill and the late Joseph R. Young, who died Oct. 1, 2001. He was a graduate of Pentucket Regional High School, West Newbury, Class of 1963.

Appointed Constable by the City of Cambridge, Mass., Mr. Young had worked as a government security officer with the Department of Transportation and had also been a security officer at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell campus. From 1974 to 1980, he was a police officer with the Town of Plaistow and from 1981 to 1993, he operated Lock Stock & Barrel, a sporting goods and fire arms sales store in Plaistow.

A life member of the National Rifle Association, he was also an avid sportsman and certified diver.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by three children, Randall J. Young and wife Christine L. of Londonderry, Gina M. Young of Pepperell, and Tracy A. Marchisio of Epping; one brother, Kevin L. Young of Merrimac; four grandchildren; and several cousins. He was the former husband of Carol E. (Linzell) Young and Jeanne M. (Maurier) O’Neil.

A memorial service was held Tuesday and interment followed in Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac.

Arrangements were by the Paul C. Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Haverhill.
