Ruth Willey

SUN CITY CENTER , Fla. - Ruth Willey, 84, formerly of Newmarket, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at IHS of Brandon, Fla.

She was born June 27, 1918, in Boston, the daughter of Joseph and Carolina (Crespi) Zocchi. She had resided Newmarket for many years before moving to Florida in the mid-1970s.

The widow of Ralph Willey, who died in 1977, she is survived by one son and his wife, John and Donna Willey of Newmarket; one daughter and her husband, Carole and Arthur Miesowicz of Rochester; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Elliott Luoni of Abington, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held in Calvary Cemetery, Newmarket, at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833 or to the American Diabetes Association, 249 Canal St., Manchester, NH 03101.

Arnold L. Bowden

EPPING - Arnold L. Bowden, 79, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Exeter.

He was born June 5, 1923, in Castine, Maine, the son of the late Roy M. and Alice (Little) Bowden, and was raised in Castine. He resided in Portsmouth from 1953 until 1988 when he moved to Epping.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Bowden was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 24 years.

He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 168 in Portsmouth.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernice (Murach) Bowden of Epping; one son, Thomas Bowden of Dover; one daughter, Jeanne Todd of Waltham, Mass.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Drury of Danbury, Conn., and Gail Rumney of Penobscot, Maine; one brother, Gailyn Bowden of Waterbury, Conn., and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Dorothy Bush; one brother, Joseph Bowden; and one sister, Katherine Witham.

There are no calling hours.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Castine Cemetery, Castine, Maine.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Epping.

R. Dexter Goodrich

EXETER - R. Dexter Goodrich, 79, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Exeter Hospital.

He was the son of Chester A. and Doris (Andrews) Goodrich. He resided in Epping for 40 years before moving to Exeter in 1961. He was a summer resident of Strafford Bow Lake.

He was a graduate of Epping High School and Becker College, Worcester, Mass., and was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II serving with the military police in the South Pacific from 1942 until 1945.

Mr. Goodrich owned and operated W.S. Goodrich Inc., in Epping, until his retirement.

He was a member and past president of the Exeter Lions Club and a member of the Portsmouth Shriner Club.

He was past president of the Epping Co-operative Bank; a former director of Indian Head Bank and Fleet Bank of Portsmouth and Exeter; and a former director of the Brick Institute of America, New England Division.

He was past master of the Major John Sullivan Lodge No. 2 of Epping; past patron of Queen Esther Chapter Order of Eastern Star; a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Portsmouth and Dover; and a 32nd degree Mason. He was past advisor to the Exeter Order of DeMolay.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine (Thyng) Goodrich; three sons, David D. Goodrich of Deerfield, Robert R. Goodrich of Epping and Stephen S. Goodrich of Shoreham, Vt.; four grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Claude H. Goodrich, William Goodrich and Otis Goodrich; and two grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Exeter Baptist Church, Spring St., Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Memorial Fund, First Baptist Church, Spring St., Exeter, NH 03833 or to the Sullivan Lodge No. 2, Pleasant St., Epping, NH 03042.

Raymond J. Rivard

SEABROOK - Raymond J. Rivard, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport, Mass.

He was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Springvale, Maine, the son of the late Ferdinand J. and Yvonne (Cote) Rivard and had resided in Seabrook since 1976 coming from Sanford, Maine.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Rivard was a labor foreman with Union Local No. 976 of Boston for many years, working on the construction of Seabrook Station.

He was a member of the Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post No. 70 of Seabrook; the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Sanford; and the Knights of Columbus in Springvale.

He is survived by two sisters, Theresa Payeur of Winter Haven, Fla., and Claire Paul of Biddeford, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in St. Ignatious Cemetery, Sanford.

Arrangements were by the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home-Crematory, Hampton.

Isabel E. Rowell

EXETER - Isabel E. (Sevigny) Rowell, 87, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

she was born Aug. 20, 1915, in North Danville, Vt., the daughter of the late William and Mary (Fournier) Sevigny. She resided in Amherst, Mass., for most of her life, moving to New Hampshire in 1993 coming from Mesa, Ariz. She lived at the Dearborn House in Hampton for three years and the Pines of Newmarket for several years before moving to Exeter Healthcare in 2002.

Mrs. Rowell worked at Valentine Hall in food service and later in alumni mail service at Amherst College.

She was a communicant of St. Bridgid's Church and was an active member with the Daughters of Isabela.

She enjoyed the activities at Exeter Healthcare and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and sewing.

The widow of George E. Rowell, who died in 1977, she is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert and Marsha Rowell of East Hardwick, Vt., and Peter and Jean Rowell of Amherst; one daughter and her husband, Regina and Leonard of Portsmouth; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Sevigny of Middleburg, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Marion Sevigny and Claire Sevigny of Danville, Vt., and Pearl Sevigny of Hughesville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Beverly.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. in the Douglass Funeral Home, 87 North Pleasant St., Amherst, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid's Church. Spring burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Hardwick, Vt.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

John L. Swenson

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. - John Lenna Swenson, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Somerville, Mass., the son of the late Herbert L. and Sadie (Lenna) Swenson and had resided in Newton, Mass., for more than 40 years.

He attended St. John's High School and Boston University. He received his bachelor of science degree from Northeastern University , Boston, and his master's degree form Anna Maria College.

He resigned from the Massachusetts State Guard in 1942 to enlist in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew with the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force out of England in B-17s. Shot down over France on his 5th mission, he was concealed by the Free French Underground who eventually helped him to escape into Spain. He was the recipient of the Soldier's Medal and the Purple Heart.

After the war he spent two years in an honor guard returning World War II dead from foreign soil to their families. He served during the Korean Conflict and received a commission as a lieutenant and was on active duty for one year at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Mass., during the Cuba Missile Crisis. In the late 1970s, then Captain Swenson was a military liaison with the Tactical Patrol Force of the Boston Police Department. In all he spent 30 years in active service retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel and receiving many Air Force medals, citations and commendations.

Mr. Swenson worked for the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Somerville and retired as a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Boston.

He was a life member of the 100th Bomb Group Association; the Escape and Evasion Society; and the Retired Officers Association.

He is survived by his wife, Norma Meras Swenson, a native of Exeter; one daughter, Sarah L. Swenson of Long Beach Beach, Calif.; and many cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 2 in St. Anthony Church, Somerville. Burial was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.

Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Boston or to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements were by the Commonwealth Funeral Service, Brighton, Mass.

Marion Taggart

EXETER - Marion (Andrew) Taggart, 93, of RiverWoods, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, after a brief illness.

She was born May 8, 1909 in Methuen, Mass., the daughter of the late Frank M. and Lillian (Wightman) Andrew. She had resided many years in North Andover, Mass., and Boston before moving to Exeter.

She was a graduate of Rogers Hall School, Weylister School, attended Smith College and at the age of 74 graduated from Boston University.

Mrs. Taggart was an audiologist and secretary to the late Dr. Elizabeth DeBlois for many years.

She was a former trustee of the Methuen Memorial Music Hall; Grace Episcopal Church in Lawrence, Mass.; a member of the Cambridge and Boston Smith College Clubs and was a volunteer at Massachusetts General Hospital.

She is survived by one nephew, Edward E. Bower of Peterborough; two grand nieces, Jennifer Gray and Elizabeth Bower; and several cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at RiverWoods.

Private burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery, Lawrence, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, 192 Broadway, Methuen, MA 01844.

Arrangements are by the Brewitt Funeral Home, Exeter.

Lydia T. Carlson

EXETER - Lydia T. Carlson, 97, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation in Exeter, where she had been a resident for nearly five years.

She was born July 24, 1905, in Quincy, Mass., the daughter of the late Tage E. and Bengta (Jonsson) Kjellander. She was raised in Braintree, Mass., and lived in North Reading, Mass., and in Alexandria for 25 years before moving to Langdon Place in Exeter.

Mrs. Carlson enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, bowling and the Boston Red Sox.

She was a former member of women’s and garden clubs in Bristol and North Reading.

The widow of Einar A. Carlson, who died in 1984, she is survived by two sons and their wives, William E. and Janet Carlson of North Hampton and Clifford E. and Dorothy Carlson of North Andover, Mass.; one daughter and her husband, Sylvia R. and Donald Hoxsie of Surfside Beach, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by six brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter.

There are no calling hours.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton.

Robert H. Bentley

PORTSMOUTH - Robert H. Bentley, 77, of 315 Salmon Ave., died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

He was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Charles L. and Beda E. (Burman) Bentley. He had resided in Portsmouth for 12 years coming from San Jose, Calif., Hawaii and North Carolina.

He was a 1943 graduate of Central High School, Bay City, Mich., and attended the Detroit College of Applied Science studying tool engineering.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving with the infantry stationed at Ft. Meade, Md. He was part of the invasion of Manila and the Philippines, he served in the South Pacific, Japan, Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, Luzon and the Pacific Islands. Mr. Bentley was the owner and operator of four Bentley Auto Service Repair garages. He was employed by the Busy Bee Janitorial Service of Somersworth.

He enjoyed reading sea stories, writing and was known by many as a Mr. Fix It.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, DonaMae (Keeney) Bentley; two daughters, Barbara A. Mills of Valley Ranch, Texas, and Pamela Fortin of Detroit; one son, Jonathan Bentley of Garland, Texas; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Fitzhugh of Bay City, Mich.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one sister, Karen Matthew. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice.Arrangements are by the Remick & Gendron Funeral-Crematory, Hampton.
