Hermann J. Ehringer
Engineer with humor

When Westinghouse came out with a new, longer-lasting electric light bulb in the 1960s, the design for the improved filament was the work of company engineer Hermann Ehringer.

The tungsten at the center of the bulb was quickly dubbed "E metal" for Mr. Ehringer, in whose name the patent was issued. But during a celebration at the company, Mr. Ehringer deadpanned that the new filament was named not for him, but for his wife. Her name, of course, was also Ehringer.

"Some engineers are fairly humorless" said his son, Stephen Ehringer of Scotch Plains. "My father was an engineer with asense of humor.

Mr. Ehringer, a retired Westinghouse engineer who held numerous patents died Saturday. He was 90.

The longtime West Orange resident had been hospitalized for about 10 days in Franciscan Oaks Health Care Center in Denville, where he died of complications from asthma and other illnesses, his son said.

An engineer in the Lamp Division of Westinghouse Corp. in Bloomfield for more than 35 years before he retired in 1975, Mr. Ehringer exhibited and engineer's mind from early youth, his son said.

When he was about 10, for example, Mr. Ehringer was taking apart a radio in the family kitchen in Newark when his father, a German immigrant, came upon him. "Are you looking for its soul?" his father asked, in German, according to a story passed down to family members.

When Mr. Ehringer had children of his own, this fascination with figuring things out and making things asserted itself again.

Many parents are satisfied with a sanbox as a simple sandbox, but Mr. Ehringer insisted on engineering his son's sandbox to make it something more. He took precise measurements on the wooden frame and enclosed the sandbox with painted wood and chicken wire- "the whole nine yards"- his son recalled.

"He was very methodicial, " his son said.

And that engineer's mind was also applied around the house at the family's 1910 home in West Orange. Mr. Ehringer, among other projects, rigged special pipes to drain rainwater from window wells.

"His word was putterer", recalled his son, an editor at The Star Ledger. The house was filled with boxes and jars of every imaginable sort of nut, bolt or spare part.

It was at Westinghouse that Mr. Ehringer applied his talents professionally, garnering numerous patents during his long career.

It was also while working at Westinghouse that Mr. Ehringer met his future bride.

In the 1950s, during a strike ath the Bloomfield plant, company engineers were relocated to a plant in Elmira, NY, to avoid crossing a picket line.

There, Mr. Ehringer and several colleagues were given transportation to the plant by a company secreatary, a widow with two school age children.

The couple hit it off. " He had a great sense of humor", his future bride recalled.

And when she, by then an elementary school teacher, needed an escort to a Junior League Christmas ball, they began dating. Mr. Ehringer and his wife Harriet, were married the next year on May 19, 1956.

Born in Newark, Mr. Ehringer was a1950 graduate of New Jersey Institute of Technology, then known as the Newark College of Engineering. He received a bachelor's degree in metallurgy. He moved to West Orange in 1957.

In addition to his wife, Harriet, and his son, Stephen, Mr. Ehringer is survived by a stedaughter, Margaret Waring of Surprise, AZ; a brother Frank Ehringer of Mountain Lakes, NJ; several nieces and nephews and six grandchildren, and a predeceased stepson David Pallesen.
