Susie Riczko

ROCKAWAY – Susie Riczko died on Monday, November 10, 2008 at home after a short illness surrounded by her family. She was 90.

She was born in Rockaway Borough and was a lifelong resident. She worked for 43 years at Picatinny Arsenal in the Micro Data Branch retiring in 1984.

She was a devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway and a member of the Rosary Society.

Susie was predeceased by her beloved husband, John in April 1974.

Susie is survived by her loving children, John Jr. and his wife Ann of Randolph; and Susan Roy and her husband Ron of St. Johnsbury, VT. She is the cherished grandmother of Jonathan Riczko and his fiancé Lisa Zito of Summit, Sarah Riczko of Newport, RI and Amanda Winter of St. Johnsbury, VT. She is also survived by her sister Mary Kossatz of Cream Ridge, NJ and her brother Joseph Kocur and his wife Helen of Rockaway. Susie is also survived by several nieces and nephews and friends who were close to her heart, especially Maryellen Allen, her niece of Wharton, and friends Margie Ballard and Eleanor Lenahan both of Rockaway Borough who lended support over the years and especially during illness this past year.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at 9: 15 a.m. to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment at Locust Hill cemetery, Dover.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 63 E. Main St., Rockaway 07866.

Thomas Harry Ferrone

BLAIRSTOWN – Thomas Harry Ferrone died on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. He was 61.

Born in Dover he lived in Blairstown for the last 31 years.

Mr. Ferrone was a licensed social worker employed by Passaic County Board of Social Services in Paterson for 34 years before his retirement in 2003.

He was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, with a special love for fishing. He also enjoyed cycling and skiing.

He is predeceased by his mother Theresa in 2004.

He is survived by his wife Ceil; his father Harry T. of Rockaway; three children Thomas W. of Rockaway, Michael H. of Fairfax, VT and Natalie S. Graziano of Bangor, PA his sister Kathy Barnes of Old Bridge; and three grandchildren, Hunter and Kaden Graziano, and Ella Ferrone.

A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, Oct. 27 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 63 E. Main St., Rockaway at 10 a.m.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. only at the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 383 Main Avenue, 5th floor, Norwalk, CT 06851. Envelopes will be at the fuenral home.

Charles Z. Tanski

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Charles Z. Tanski died on Friday, October 17, 2008 at Troy Hills Center in Parsippany. He was 88.

Born in Warsaw, Poland he lived in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, NY before moving to Rockaway Twp. in 1969.

Mr. Tanski was a graduate of Pratt University. He worked as a mechanical draftsman at Allied Chemical in Morristown for 27 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a parishioner of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway.

He is predeceased by his wife Mary J. in 2004; and his son Alexander C. in 2007.

He is survived by his daughter Anna Marie Tanski and her husband William H. Hanna of Rockaway Twp.; his daughter-in-law Robyn Tanski of Maryland; and five grandchildren Cara, Ariel, Alexia, Carly, and Kyla.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday October 21 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Our Lady of Czestochowa cemetery, Doylestown, PA. Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. only.

Edward Mason

ROCKAWAY TWP. – Edward Mason died on Saturday, October 11, 2008 after a short illness at Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare’s Hospital/Dover. He was 70.

Born in Hibernia to the late Hugh and Ella Mason, he was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Mason worked in the test range at Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Twp. for 29 years before retiring.

He was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway.

He is survived by his brother Joseph Mason and his wife Eleanor; two nieces; a nephew; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 15 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Cecilia’s cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. only.

Richard Allen Kogeas, Sr.

ROCKAWAY – Richard Allen Kogeas, Sr. died on Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at home. He was 64.

Born in Minneapolis, MN, he lived in Rockaway for the last 32 years.

Mr. Kogeas served in the Marines.

He was a bottler for Pabst Brewing Co. in Newark for 17 years before retiring in 1985.

He was a member of the American Legion Rockden Post 175 of Rockaway, and the F&AM; Jephthah Lodge of Rockaway.

He is survived by his wife Caroline; daughter Karen Ofner of Rockaway Twp.; two sons, Richard A. Kogeas, Jr. of Cape Coral, FL and David M. Kogeas of Jersey City; a brother Stephen J. Kogeas, Jr. of Spotswood; four grandchildren, Suzanne, Richard, Dara, and Joshua; and a great-grandson, Dalton.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery.

Tessie A. Barwicke

COLTS NECK – Tessie A. Barwicke died on Wednesday October 1, 2008 at home. She was 100.

Born in Hillburn, NY, she lived in Mt. Freedom and Rockaway for 44 years before moving to Colts Neck 10 years ago.

Mrs. Barwicke was a homemaker.

She was predeceased by her husband Stephen in 1965; her son Stephen and her daughter Katherine both in 1998.

She is survived by two daughters, Alice Ganley of Colts Neck with whom she lived, and Joyce Apgar of Winchester, WV; a sister Mary Lawrence of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, Billy, J.T., Brenda, Stephen, David, Mike, Marie, Alan and Andy; and ten great-grandchildren, Billy, Nancy, Christopher, John, Emily, Nicky, Cortney, Theresa, Stephen and Samantha.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Whitham – Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Robert J. Tatka

BRICK – Robert J. Tatka died on Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Ocean County Medical Center in Brick. He was 81.

Born in Hibernia, he lived in Rockaway for before moving to Brick a year and a half ago.

He graduated from Rockaway High School in 1945. Mr. Tatka went on to serve in the Army during WWII and in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

He was a letter carrier for the Rockaway Post Office for over 30 years before he retired in 1982.

He was a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway, and a member of the American Legion Rockden Post 175 of Rockaway.

He was predeceased by his first wife Ann in 1959; and his second wife Marilyn in 1988.

He is survived by two daughters Donna Gabbia and her husband Raymond of Toms River, and Deborah Hagberg and her husband Daniel of Rockaway; seven grandchildren, Roseann and Nicholas Chirichillo, Angelo and Joseph Gabbia, and Marie, Robert and Jeremy Hagberg; and four great-grandchildren, Melanie, Shelby, Raymond and Justin.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Interment at St. Cecilia’s cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. only.

Giovannina Battaglia

ROCKAWAY – Giovannina Battaglia died suddenly on Monday, September 22, 2008 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. She was 81.

Born and raised in Calabria, Italy she lived in Newark before moving to Rockaway in 1963.

Mrs. Battaglia was a seamstress at Leona Fashions in Rockaway for 12 years before retiring.

She was predeceased by her husband Pasquale in 2004, and her son Frank A. in 1998.

She is survived by her daughter Rosemary Carmella Bisson of Rockaway; two sons, Peter of Rockaway and Salvatore and his wife Sharon of Dover; five grandchildren, Dawn Piccirilli, Laura Battaglia, April and Joanna Bisson and Franco Battaglia; and two great-grandsons, Joseph Piccirilli and Dylan Emond.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, E. Hanover. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202. Envelopes will be at the funeral home.

George J. DeNivo

ROCKAWAY – George J. DeNivo died on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at St. Clare’s Hospital/Denville. He was 85.

Born in New York City, NY he lived in Brooklyn, NY before moving to Rockaway 50 years ago.

Mr. DeNivo served with the Army during WWII.

He was a laborer and member of the Laborers Union of Boonton for over 20 years before retiring in 1985.

Mr. DeNivo was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Dover, and the American Legion Rockden Post 175 of Rockaway.

He is survived by his wife Muriel; stepson Wayne Fisch and his wife Kathy of Rockaway; his sister Florence; two step-grandchildren Wayne Fisch Jr of Tucson, AZ and Lori Romano of Roxbury; three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9: 15 a.m. from the Whitham- Kanapaux Funeral Home, 20 Keller Ave., Rockaway to a funeral Mass at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Rockaway at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven cemetery, E. Hanover. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. only.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Make-A-Wish Foundation, 1034 Salem Rd., Union, NJ 07083. Envelopes will be at the funeral home.
