VIRGINIA EARLY MCNERNEY, 81, of BRICK
VIRGINIA EARLY MC NERNEY, 81, of BRICK, died Thursday at Meridian Nursing Home, Brick. She was an educator with A. Harry Moore School at Jersey City State College for more than 23 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Cedarcraft Club, Brick; the Princeton Avenue Civic Association, Brick; Elder Med; the Brick Hospital Association; the Glorious Years of St. Peter's, Point Pleasant; St. Martha's Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant, and the church's Rosary Society; the Lady Guard of Point Pleasant; and the Barnegat Windjammers Questers. She graduated from Notre Dame of Staten Island and received a master of arts degree from Seton Hall University. Born in Bayonne, she lived there and in Jersey City before moving to Brick in 1953.
Her husband, James E., died in 1979. Surviving are a son, James E. McNerney of Houston; a daughter, Virginia Cronin of Point Pleasant; and three grandchildren, Drew, Caitlin and Meghan Cronin.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Route 88, Brick. A funeral Liturgy will be offered at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Church, Point Pleasant. Burial will follow in St. Catharine's Cemetery, Wall. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name are requested to either the American Cancer Society or the Women in Military for American Memorial Foundation (WIMSA), Dept. 560, Washington, DC 20042-0506.

DORIS WAGNER, 86, of POINT PLEASANT
DORIS WAGNER, 86, of POINT PLEASANT, died Oct. 18 at Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant. She was a music teacher for the New York school system, retiring in 1979. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Toms River. Born in Forty Fort, Pa., she lived in New York and in Brick before moving to Point Pleasant two years ago.
Surviving are two nieces, Joan W. Gamel of Wilmington, Del., and Phyllis Spisak of Humble, Texas; and two nephews, Richard Wagner of Media, Pa., and Le Roy Wagner of Wilmington, Del.
Interment will be private in Herkimer, N.Y., at the family's request. Van Hise and Callagan Leber Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach, is in charge of arrangements.

ALEXANDER A. KARANIEWSKY, 71, of Whiting, MANCHESTER
ALEXANDER A. KARANIEWSKY, 71, of Whiting, MANCHESTER, died Thursday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He retired as sergeant with the South River Police Department. He was a communicant of St. Stephen's Protomartyr Church, South River, and a life member of the South River Rescue Squad. He was active in the South River Little League and the Pop Warner Football League. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was born in South River.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edward Karaniewsky; and a sister, Sophie Siefert. Surviving are his wife, Mary Tomare Karaniewsky; three sons, Robert Karaniewsky of Hillsborough, Thomas Karaniewsky of Colts Neck and David Karaniewsky of Margate, Fla.; a brother, Stanley Karaniewsky of Long Island; a sister, Frances Podbelski of Howell; and four grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Funeral ser-vices will be conducted 9:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be offered 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen's Protomartyr Church, South River. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Heart Association would be appreciated.

JOSEPH VILARO, 85, of NEPTUNE
JOSEPH VILARO, 85, of NEPTUNE, died Thursday at MediCenter Nursing Home, Neptune City. He was employed as a contracting purchasing agent for 42 years at Fort Monmouth. He was a member of West Belmar United Methodist Church and Monmouth County Chapter 411 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a World War II Army veteran and served as sergeant. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of the Shore area.
His wife, Sarah Louise "Sadie" Vilaro, died in 1995; and he was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Marilyn Rowland. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Shirley Komar of Neptune; and a step-granddaughter.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Route 138, Wall. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at West Belmar United Methodist Church, 17th Avenue and I Street, West Belmar, Pastor Stuart Dangler officiating. Interment will follow in Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.

ROMEO VACCARELLA, 72, of FREEHOLD
ROMEO VACCARELLA, 72, of FREEHOLD, died Thursday at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He was a production control manager at Pitney Bowes Co., South Plainfield, for 10 years, retiring in 1991. He was a communicant of St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1945 to 1946. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1953 as a military policeman. Born in Hackensack, he lived in Aberdeen for 27 years before moving to Freehold two years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Causey Vaccarella; a son, Michael Vaccarella of Lanoka Harbor, Lacey; two daughters, Maryellen Mastrobattista of Yardley, Pa., and Patricia Lloyd of Aberdeen; four brothers, Vincent Vaccarella of Columbus, Benjamin Vaccarella of Manahawkin, Stafford, Carl Vaccarella of Wyckoff and John Paolella of Hackensack; three sisters, Frances Minella of Hackensack, Lucille Zabriskie of Point Pleasant and Joyce Vaccarella of Brooklyn; and six grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport. A funeral Mass will be offered 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Benedict's Church, Holmdel. Cremation will be private.

SABINA IRENE JEHRING, 85, of Woodstock, Ga., formerly of Whiting
SABINA IRENE JEHRING, 85, of Woodstock, Ga., formerly of Whiting, MANCHESTER, died Oct. 28 at her daughter's home in Woodstock. Born in Hudson County, she lived in Whiting for more than 20 years before moving to Georgia.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Jehring; and her parents, Peter and Frances Ignatowicz Zyskowski. Surviving are two daughters, Diane Payne of Woodstock and Norma Van Amberg of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, Oct. 29 at St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Alpharetta, Ga. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1906, Toms River, NJ 08754. Northside Chapel Funeral Directors, Roswell, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.

THELMA C. HIRTH, 91, of Greenbriar I, BRICK
THELMA C. HIRTH, 91, of Greenbriar I, BRICK, died Thursday at home. She was a house mother at Brooklyn Home for Children, Forest Hills, N.Y., for 20 years, retiring in 1979. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Estoria Chapter, New York, and St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, Brick. Born in McGraw, N.Y., she lived in Florham Park before moving to Brick 10 years ago.
Her husband, Thomas, died in 1989. Surviving are a son, William L. Cartright of Brick; a daughter, Dolores McDermott of Auburn, Wash.; a sister, Elma Pigot of Saddlebrook; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Route 88, Brick. A funeral service will be offered 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, Route 88 West, Brick. Buri-al will follow in Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to St. Raphael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Highway 88, Brick, NJ 08724.

ROBERT JOHN TEETER SR., 53, of HOWELL
ROBERT JOHN TEETER SR., 53, of HOWELL, died Thursday at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He owned and operated John Teeter Station Mnt. since 1985. He was a member of the Howell Elks Lodge 2515 and the Star Astronomy Club in Red Bank. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. Born in Altoona, Pa., he lived in Howell for 12 years.
Surviving are his wife, Maureen McGovern Teeter; a son, Robert Tee-ter Jr. of Howell; a daughter, Jenni-fer Teeter of Seaside Heights; his mother, Vicky Teeter of Manville; two brothers, Matthew Teeter of Traverse City, Mich., and Patrick Teeter of Kendall Park, South Brunswick; two sisters, Teresa Vev-chak of Antioch, Tenn., and Chris-tine Fogarty of Lawrenceville; and a grandson, Derek John Teeter of Sea-side Heights.
Relatives and friends may attend a visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6250 Route 9, Howell. A Mass of Chris-tian Burial will be offered Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lakewood.

DR. FRANCIS H. STEVENS JR., 51, of BRICK
DR. FRANCIS H. STEVENS JR., 51, of BRICK, died Thursday at Jer-sey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He maintained a dental practice in Manasquan and was a practicing dentist for 27 years. He was also on the medical staff at Jersey Shore Medical Center. He was a longtime member and committee member of the Monmouth and Ocean Dental Society, and a member of the New Jersey Dental Society. He was a member of Manasquan United Methodist Church, a 25-year member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Manasquan, and was named a member of the Kiwanis Legion of Honor. He was chaplain of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity at Muhlenberg College, and belonged to the Wing and Shot Gun Club, Chatsworth. He served in the Naval Reserve as a lieutenant in the Dental Corps. He was a 1969 graduate of Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa., and received his doctor of dental medicine degree from New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry, Jersey City. Born in Newark, he grew up in Springfield and lived in Point Pleasant before moving to Brick 10 years ago.
His father, Francis H. Stevens Sr., died in 1987. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann VanSplinter Ste-vens; a son, Francis H. Stevens III of Norfolk, Va.; two daughters, Paige Julia Stevens of Brick, and Andrea Carol Stevens of Point Pleasant; and his mother, Elizabeth H. Stevens of Brick.
Friends are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will fol-low in Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle. Flowers will be accepted, or a contribution may be made to the Cancer Research Treatment Fund Inc., 1440 York Ave., Suite P4, New York, NY 10021.

MARY J. GREENWOOD, 89, of TOMS RIVER
MARY J. GREENWOOD, 89, of TOMS RIVER, died Tuesday at Community Medical Center, Toms River. She and her late husband were the former owners of The Green-wood Inn, Toms River. Born in Pitman, she moved to 1946.
Her husband, William C., died in 1987. Surviving are a son, William C. Greenwood Jr. of Jackson; a daughter, Sandra Pakula of Toms River; a sister, Betty Zubert of Pitman; and a granddaughter, Samantha Thompkins of Brick.
Friends are invited to attend a memorial service 7 p.m. Monday at Abundant Grace Fellowship Church, 108 Indian Head Road, Toms River. Kedz Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements.

MICHAEL F. SILKI, 88, of Chester Springs, Pa., formerly of MIDDL
MICHAEL F. SILKI, 88, of Chester Springs, Pa., formerly of MIDDLETOWN, died Thursday at Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Pa. He was owner/operator of J & M Hardware, Middletown, for 25 years, retiring 11 years ago. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was past member of King of Kings Lutheran Church, Middletown, and a longtime member of the Middletown Lions Club. Born in Jersey City, he lived in Middletown from 1947 to 1996 before moving to Chester Springs, Pa., in 1996.
His wife, Ferne Rhoads Silki, died Jan. 8, 1995. Surviving are two daughters, Sue Hummerston of Chester Springs, Pa., and Nancy Silki of Pensacola, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home Inc., Middletown. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Middletown Lions Club for the Prevention of Blindness & Diabetes, PO Box 55, Middletown, NJ 07748.

EUGENE E. O"ROURKE, 60, of MATAWAN
EUGENE E. O'ROURKE, 60, of MATAWAN, died yesterday at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. He was the owner and operator of Gene's Bar and Liquors, Old Bridge, retiring two years ago. He was a Navy veteran. Born in Jersey City, he lived in Matawan for the past 28 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Freda Drouard O'Rourke. Surviving are his wife, Beverly Gallagher O'Rourke; a son, Daniel O'Rourke, and a daughter, Shannon O'Rourke, both of Matawan; and two brothers, Thomas O'Rourke of Ocean Township and Edward O'Rourke of Old Bridge.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The family requests that donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Central New Jersey Chapter, 12 Roszel Road, Suite 203, Princeton, NJ 08540.

CAROLINE M. GAROFALO GATTIS, 82, of WEST LONG BRANCH
CAROLINE M. GAROFALO GATTIS, 82, of WEST LONG BRANCH, died Wednesday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She was a comptroller for Monmouth Chrysler, West Long Branch, for many years, retiring in 1979. She was a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of West Long Branch Fire Company 2, a member and former treasurer of the Ladies Auxiliary of Red Bank Elks Lodge 233, a member of the Long Branch Chapter of Deborah, the West Long Branch Leisure Club where she was treasurer for 19 years, the West Long Branch Community Center Board of Trustees, the West Long Branch Board of Elections and the West Long Branch Republican Club. She was a communicant of St. Jerome's Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch, a member, past president and treasurer of its Rosary Altar Society, and a member and past treasurer of the St. Jerome Seniors. She was also active on the staff of the St. Jerome's Carnival Committee since its inception. She was a member of the St. Ann Society of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Born in Roselle Park, she lived in Red Bank before moving to West Long Branch in 1941.
She was predeceased by her parents, William and Judith Talarico Garofalo; three brothers, Ernest and Eugene Schiafone and Carley Garofalo; and two sisters, Mildred Calandriello and Adeline Manfreda. Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Philip "Phil" Gattis; a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Michael O'Connor of West Long Branch; a sister, Ida Amecangelo of Red Bank; three grandchildren, Patrick and Erin O'Connor and Tara and Morris Gomez; a great-granddaughter, Jasmine Gomez; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Fiore Funeral Home, 882 Broadway, West Long Branch. A funeral will be held 8 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be offered 9 a.m. at St. Jerome's Church, West Long Branch. Burial will follow in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.

ALFRED PAVELKA, 61, of JACKSON
ALFRED PAVELKA, 61, of JACKSON, died yesterday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. He was a burner with Local 95, House Wrecking Union, New York City, retiring in 1992. He was a communicant of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Jackson. Born in New York City, he lived in Queens before moving to Jackson in 1982.
Surviving are a brother, Robert; a sister, Eleanor Cimilluca, both Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at George S. Hassler Funeral Home, 980 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a rite of committal 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a funeral liturgy at 8:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 935 Bennetts Mills Road, Jackson, with the Rev. Monsignor Casimir Ladzinski officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.
