Frances E. Koyen

Frances E. Koyen, 85, of Manahawkin, died Sept. 11 at Manahawkin Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Perth Amboy, Frances was a former resident of Metuchen, Newtown, Pa. and a resident of Manahawkin for nine years.

She was the daughter of the late Axel and Emma Alexander Stenquist and wife of the late Robert Koyen. She is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn Koyen and Joyce Bloom, both of Manahawkin, and Barbara Chiemingo of Bordentown; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Florence Szerdy of Silver Cliff, Colo. and Dorothy Zardavets of Edison.

Private services and interment were held at Newtown Cemetery under the direction of the Swartz/Givnish Funeral Home, Newtown, Pa.

Doris O. Sturgis

Doris O. Sturgis, 89, Beach Haven, died Sept. 23 at her home.

Born in Narbeth, Pa., she resided in Indianapolis, Ind. before moving to Beach Haven in 1969.

She was employed by Alfred Orr DDS. Philidelphia, as a dental assistant.

Doris was a member of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Beach Haven.

Surviving are her husband, Elias Gates Sturgis; son and daughter-in-law, Alfred and Tina Sturgis, Reading, Pa.; four grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. Sept. 30 at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Beach Haven.

Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel M. Smith

Ethel M. Smith, 90, Manahawkin, passed away Tuesday at Seacrest Village Nursing Home, Little Egg Harbor.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Smith resided in Barnegat for 25 years.

Preceded in death by her husband Earl on Dec. 16, 1975, she is survived by her daughter, Barbara May Tyciak of Manahawkin; four grandchildren, Michelle Tyciak, Greg Tyciak, Maureen Hagen and Karen Carpenter; six great-grandchildren, Nicole, Jason, Kristie, Jessica, Jared and Ethan, and three great-great-grandchildren, Giana Gabrielle and Kayla.

Private arrangments were entrusted to Maxwell Funeral Home, Manahawkin.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Route 9, Cedar Run, N.J., 08092.

Jewelle Apperson Scholl

Jewelle Apperson Scholl, 90, of East Windsor passed away Nov. 30, at home.

Born in Rhoadesville, Va., Mrs. Scholl had been a resident of East Windsor for the past 15 years.

She was a lifetime Episcopalian; a former member of St. Stephen's Church in Waretown, of Trinity Church in Fredericksburg, Va. and more recently, a member of St. David's Church in Cranbury.

Mrs. Scholl graduated from Rutgers University College in 1959 with a BA in Elementary Education. She was employed by the Long Beach Island Board of Education and taught first grade and pre-first at the Long Beach Island Elementary School and the Ethel Jacobson Elementary School. She retired May 14, 1976 after 25 years of teaching, and maintained a lifelong interest in childrens' education and issues. After retirement, Mrs. Scholl enjoyed traveling in Europe and the Holy Lands.

Mrs. Scholl is survived by a daughter, Klea S. Hartman of East Windsor; a granddaughter, Jewelle E. O'Rourke of Trenton; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Conway and Helen Apperson of Franconia, Va. and Sam Apperson; a sister-in-law, Bea Apperson of Stephen City, Va.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Cremation ceremonies are private and there will be no calling hours.

A memorial service and Requiem Eucharist took place Dec. 1 at St. David's Episcopal Church, Cranbury, with the Rev. Laurence D. Fish officiating. Interment followed in the church's garden.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Mrs. Scholl's memory to St. David's Episcopal Church, 90 S. Main Street, Cranbury, NJ 08512 or to the children's charity, Hale House, 152 West 122nd Street, New York, NY 10027.

Arrangements are under the direction of the A.S. Cole Funeral Home, 22 North Main Street, Cranbury.

Joseph G. Kisielius

Joseph G. Kisielius, 86, Little Egg Harbor, died Dec. 3 at Seacrest Village Nursing Home.

He was born in Philadelphia and resided there until moving to Little Egg Harbor in 1970.

He was a welder for General Motors Corporation, Pa. Mr. Kisielius was a member of St. Theresa's Church and the MICA Club. He was a former member of the Mummers in Philadelphia. He served in the National Guard.

He is survived by his wife, Edith; son, Michael Foster, Little Egg Harbor; daughters, Elizabeth Pistacco, Morrisville, Pa., and Mary Lentini, Bellmawr; sister, Julie Vincovitch, Warminister, Pa., eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Wood Funeral Home, Tuckerton was in charge of arrangements.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday at St. Theresa's Church, Tuckerton. Burial was private.

Claude Raymond Wode Sr.

Claude Raymond Wode, Sr., 81, of Arcadia, Fla. died Dec. 3 with family members at his side, at DeSoto Memorial Hospital, Arcadia.

He was born Sept. 16, 1921 in Elizabeth, and moved to Arcadia in 1988 from Manahawkin.

He was retired from Taylor Forge & Pipe Company in Whithouse Station, after more than 20 years service. He was a member of St. Edmund's Episcopal Church and Moose Lodge No. 1327 of Arcadia.

Surviving are four daughters, Gloria Lamb of Orlando, Fla., Kathleen Maerkel of Bound Brook, Carole Stout of Bound Brook, and Dorothy Frentzen of New Gretna; two sons, Claude R. Wode, Jr. of Arcadia and Robert J. Wode of Parkertown; a sister, Dorothy Irwin of Elizabeth; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services took place Saturday at Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel. The Rev. Raymond P. Kress of St. Edmund's Episcopal Church officiated. Entombment followed in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Port Charlotte.

Arrangements were by Roberson Funeral Home Port Charlotte Chapel.

Anna L. McMahon

Anna L. McMahon, 50, Waretown, died Dec. 4 at home.

Born in Little Ferry, she lived most of her life in Waretown.

She was a co-owner of Three Grimebusters Cleaning Services before retiring three years ago.

A devoted wife and loving mother, she cherished time spent with her family. She is survived by her mother, Anna Bigelow; her husband, Michael; one son, Michael Jr. and one daughter, Kelly.

The family is grateful to the Siegel Family, Timmy and Pat McMahon, Lee Toth, and Eileen Mick for all their support.

Services took place at Maxwell Funeral Home, Manahawkin. Burial was in Ocean County Memorial Park, Waretown.

Marie Tomaro

Marie Tomaro, 74, Little Egg Harbor, died Dec. 7 at Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia.

Born in Garfield, she lived in Paterson before moving to Little Egg Harbor in 1973.

She was a communicant of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Tuckerton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Sr., in 2000. She is survived by her sons, Joseph D. of New Gretna, Michael and John both of Little Egg Harbor; one daughter, Marilyn DePace of Haddonfield; three sisters, Rose Madonna of Oakland, Vincenza Trezza of Garfield, and Josephine Minor of Little Ferry; and seven grandchildren.

Services were under the direction of Maxwell Funeral Home, Little Egg Harbor.

Anna R. Digan

Anna R. Digan, (Rakowski) 84, Manahawkin, died Dec. 4 at home.

Born in Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. and formerly of Long Island, N.Y., she was a resident of Manahawkin, since 1964.

She was a waitress for the Causeway Inn, Manahawkin, for 15 years, retiring in 1979.

Anna served in the US Army in World War II. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 879, Beach Haven.

She is survived by her sons, James C. Digan of Tuckerton, and Michael L. Digan of Manahawkin; three brothers, John Rakowski of Irmo, S.C., Michael Rokowski of Manahawkin, and Charles Rokowski of St. Paul, Minn.; one sister, Frances Rakowski of Tuckerton; three granddaughters, Marjorie Browning, Melissa Andrews, Michel Digan; two grandsons, Matthew and Mark Digan, and four great-grandchildren, Michael, Timothy, Brandon and Ryan. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Poole, and two brothers, Joseph and Bruno Rakowski.

Services took place Saturday at Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home.

A graveside service was held at Brig. Gen. Wm. Doyle/NJ Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown, Monday.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Van Dyke Hospice Program, 1433 Hooper Ave., Toms River, NJ 08753, would be appreciated.

Betty "Goose" Compton

Betty "Goose" Compton, 71, Beach Haven, died Dec. 9 at Atlantic City Medical Center, Atlantic City.

Born in Evanston, Ill., she resided in Haddonfield, before moving to Beach Haven in 1995.

She was employed by Stevens Real Estate, Brant Beach, as an office manager for six years. She was former owner and operator of Compton Restaurant, Haddon Township. She was a member of Healthy Bones Program, Long Beach Island.

Surviving is her husband of 46 years, Edwin Compton; one daughter, Catherine Calfield of Rosemont, Pa.; one son, Andrew Compton of Beach Haven; one sister, Mary Elm of Pittsburgh, and three grandchildren, Trip and Timothy Calfield and Katie Compton.

Her other son, Edwin P. Compton, died in 1982.

There was a family gathering Friday.

Contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity.

John I. Sweeney

John I. Sweeney of Riverside and Ship Bottom, passed away suddenly at home Jan. 28, at the age of 61.

John was born in Ridley Park, Pa. and had been a resident of Riverside since 1968.

He was the owner/director of Sweeney Funeral Home in Riverside for the past 35 years.

John was a graduate of the Emory Aeronautical School in Florida and McAllister School of Embalming in New York City, N.Y. He was a member and past president of the New Jersey State Funeral Director's Association, the Burlington County Funeral Director's Association and a member of National Funeral Director's Association.

John was also a Paul Harris Fellow of the Riverside/Delran/Delanco Rotary Club, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1436 of Delran and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus member in the John Tatem Assembly Burlington Co. He was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Riverside, where he was a former usher and member of the Holy Name Society. John was a past director of Riverside Savings and Loan and past president of the Riverside Library.

John was especially proud of his involvement with the Hogar Escucla Rosenburg orphanage and his adopted son Antonio Paredez and family in Santo Domingo.

John's other memberships included: Moose Lodge 279 in Riverside, the Polish-American Citizens Club of Cambridge, the Riverside Koffee Club, the Pt. Pleasant Elks Lodge, supporter of the Long Beach Island Historical Society, and he was a licensed pilot member of of AOPA.

John's hobbies included spending time on the beach in Ship Bottom and the Dominican Republic, horse racing, theater, forecasting the weather, socializing and dining out.

John was the beloved husband of Maryanne Sweeney (nee Deek) of Riverside and Ship Bottom to whom he was married to for 38 years. He was the devoted father of Kellie Beno and her husband Bill of Perkasie, Pa., Kathleen Gee and her husband Tom of Delran, and Kolleen Casey and her husband Dan of Lumberton. He was the proud grandfather of Claire and Anna Beno, Tara Gee, and Connor and Caroline Casey. John was the beloved son of Sallie Sweeney (Drew) of Burlington, and the late John F. Sweeney; the loving brother of William and Chris Sweeney of Hamilton Township, Michael and Marion Sweeney of Manahawkin, and Sheila Sweeney of Gardendale, Ala.; and the dearest uncle to Jennifer and Bridget Sweeney.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Bridgeboro and Hancock Streets, Riverside. Interment followed at St. Peter's Cemetery in Riverside. Services were under the direction of the Sweeney Funeral Home, Riverside.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Peter's R.C. Church, P.O. Box 248, Riverside, NJ 08075 or to the Connor P. Casey Foundation for Autism, 7 Chase Rd., Lumberton, NJ 08060.
