W. GEORGE SASSO, AGE 73, SOMERSET
W. George Sasso, 73, died yesterday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
He was born in Malden, Mass., and lived in Haddonfield before moving to Somerset 27 years ago.
Mr. Sasso was general manager of the electronics division of Jewel Electric, Jersey City. He had also been employed by Westinghouse Corp., New Brunswick, for 25 years.
He was a graduate of St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Matthias Council in Somerset. He was also a member of the North Brunswick Chapter of Kiwanis International.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Lawrence and John Sasso. He is survived by his wife, Grace Henry Sasso; a daughter, Nancy Allegro of North Brunswick; two brothers, Joseph of Stoneham, Mass., and Michael of Wakefield, Mass.; two sisters, Angie Barbuto of Stoneham and Anna Bravacos of Paoli, Pa., and two grandchildren, Samuel and Abigail Allegro.
Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St., Somerset, followed by a 9 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Matthias R.C. Church in Somerset. Entombment will take place at Resurrection Mausoleum in Piscataway. Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are asked to consider contributions in his memory to The American Diabetes Association, Memorial and Honor Program-NCC, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.

Helen Mae Hobbs, homemaker
EDISON -- Helen Mae Hobbs, 80, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at JFK Medical Center in Edison. She was born and raised in Plainfield and spent the past 48 years in Edison. Helen was a homemaker and her hobbies included outdoor activities, traveling and walking. She was a member of the Edison Senior Citizens Group and the AARP.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Alice McGauley Hurst.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; two daughters, Patricia Champino of Normandy Beach and Kathy Miers of Hillsborough; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Miers; and a sister, Alice Marinelli of Fort Myers, Fla.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Avenue in Edison, followed by a private cremation. Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CATHERINE FOX, AGE 84, EAST BRUNSWICK
Catherine (Grunder) Fox, 84, died Wednesday at Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice in Edison.
She was born in Baltimore and had lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to East Brunswick in 1978. She worked for J.L. Hammett's in Union before retiring in 1976.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Fox in 1971, and a son, John "Mickey" Fox in 1996.
She is survived by a son, William Fox of East Brunswick; a daughter, Catherine Treat of East Brunswick, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church in Old Bridge. Burial will be at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in East Brunswick. Arrangements are by Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

HELEN FILOIA, AGE 80, OLD BRIDGE
Helen I. Filoia, 80, a Cheesequake Village resident of Old Bridge, died Thursday at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel.
A homemaker, she was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and lived in High Park, N.Y., before moving to Old Bridge eight years ago.
She is survived by her husband, Vincent Filoia; two daughters, Judy and her husband, Mitchell Miller of Belford and Lorraine and her husband, Joseph Bender of Gordonville, Pa.; two brothers, Henry Starzyk of Las Vegas and Theodore Starzyk of Poughkeepsie; a sister, Eleanor Rambo of Poughkeepsie; two granddaughters, Jennifer Hirsch of Port Monmouth and Kristen Miller of Red Bank, and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Hirsch.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Keyport. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Keyport. Visiting hours are 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Monday at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport.

JOHN FRIEL, AGE 77, SON LIVES IN OLD BRIDGE
John Joseph Friel, 77, of Toms River died Wednesday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had lived in Keansburg before moving to Toms River eight years ago. He was a chemical worker at Oakite Products in Metuchen for 25 years before retiring in 1986. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 273 in Keasburg. He was a life member of VFW Post 5940 in Brooklyn.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Sarah T. Friel in 1977, and a son, John Joseph Friel Jr. in 1949.
He is survived by his wife, the former Helen Purtill; a son, John Friel of Old Bridge; two daughters, Mary Ann Borgerson of Staten Island, N.Y., and Patricia Canavan of Keansburg, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Michael Hegarty Funeral Home, 3377 Route 9, Old Bridge, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass at Most Holy Redeemer R.C. Church in Old Bridge. Burial will be at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. both today and tomorrow at the funeral home. JOSEPH GOODE SR., AGE 68, OLD BRIDGE
Joseph Goode Sr., 68, died Thursday at Atlantic City Hospital in Atlantic City.
He was born in Woodbridge, and was a resident of Old Bridge. He was employed by Nappi Trucking in Cheesequake as a truck driver. He had previously served in the Army.
He is survived by a son, Joseph Goode Jr. of Old Bridge; three stepsons, Barry Morris of Franklin Park, Keith Morris of Englishtown and Wayne Morris of Monroe; a stepdaughter, Linda Butler of Virginia; two sisters, Ann Santucci and Jane Corsi, and five grandchildren.
Calling hours are 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Arrangements are by Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick.

JOSEPH NIECHWIADOWICZ, AGE 92, EDISON
Joseph K. Niechwiadowicz, 92, of Edison died yesterday at Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice in Edison.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha "Betty" (Makar) Niechwiadowicz; two sons, Joseph Niechwiadowicz of South Dakota and Richard J. Niechwiadowicz of Laurel, Del.; a brother, Bill Nacnadovitz of Old Bridge, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Boylan Funeral Home, 10 Wooding Ave., Edison, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass at St. Matthew's R.C. Church in Edison. Entombment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Piscataway. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. only tomorrow.

MADONNA SCULLY, AGE 51, SOUTH AMBOY
Madonna Flynn Scully, 51, of Green Creek, N.J. died Wednesday at her home.
A native of South Amboy, she resided in Green Creek since 1992. She was a registered nurse employed by Wills (eye) Surgery Center and also worked for various hospitals. She attended Our Lady of the Angels R.C. Church in Cape May Court House.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; three children, Ken Wahler and Stephanie Spisak, both of Green Creek, and Alicia Wyzykowski of Orlando, Fla.; her mother, Pearl Flynn of South Amboy; two sisters, Pearl Flynn and Diane Flynn, both of South Amboy, and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Angels R.C. Church, Garden State Parkway & East Mechanic Street, Cape May Court House. Burial is private. Arrangements are by Radzieta Funeral Home, Cape May Court House. Memorials may be made to the Rio Grande (N.J.) Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

DOROTHY M. COLE, 73, a lifelong resident of LONG BRANCH
DOROTHY M. COLE, 73, a lifelong resident of LONG BRANCH, died Wednesday, with her husband, Marshall W. Cole, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Brick. Before retiring, she was employed by the Homestead Pharmacy, Long Branch. She was a communicant of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was a member of the Auxiliary of Elks Lodge 742, Long Branch.
A son, Marshall W. Cole Jr., died in 1964. Surviving are three sons, Paul R. Cole of West Long Branch, Richard E. Cole of Alum Bank, Pa., and Larry D. Cole of Osterburg, Pa.; two daughters, Virginia Beach of Long Branch, and Dorothy Hecker of Spring Hill, Fla.; three brothers, Daniel Carroll of Bound Brook, William Carroll of Toms River, and John Carroll of Bluffton, S.C.; four sisters, Anna Reynolds of Lee Hall, Va., Jean Taboada of Brick, Joan Warren of Oceanport, and Margie Courtney of West Long Branch; 13 grandchildren; and 12great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell St. at Broadway, Long Branch. A Funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Interment will follow in Woodbine Cemetery, Oceanport.
