MIDDLETOWN -- Ellis S. Vieser, 79, first president of the New Jersey Alliance for Action, a coalition dedicated to infrastructure improvements in New Jersey, has died.
Mr. Vieser died Monday at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, after a lengthy illness.
He was a founding member and first president of the Edison-based New Jersey Alliance for Action, serving from 1974 to until his retirement in 1995.
The alliance was formed during an economic recession in 1974 by a small group of construction industry executives and labor leaders. Under Mr. Vieser's leadership, it grew in size and influence as a statewide non-profit, non-partisan coalition of business, labor, professional, academic and government groups, and now has more than 600 member organizations.
Alliance Chairman George Laufenberg and Philip K. Beachem, who succeeded Mr. Vieser as president, said in a joint statement, "Ellis Vieser was the heart and soul of our organization, the friend of governors and laborers alike, and a man who will never be forgotten by anyone who knew him."
During Mr. Vieser's tenure, the alliance became a major advocate for infrastructure improvements in the state, covering such issues as transportation, water supply, wastewater treatment, protection of natural resources, and dredging New Jersey's seaports.

That same year, he received the Governor's Pride Award for Economic Development, the state's highest honor for an individual citizen.
Among Mr. Vieser's other honors were the Commander's Award for Public Service from the Army Corps of Engineers, the national Rebuild America Award from the CIT Group, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society of Professional Engineers.
His expertise in infrastructure development went far beyond the borders of New Jersey. He was a representative of the Citizen Ambassador Program of People to People International in delegations to China, South America, Eastern Europe and Russia.
Before joining the Alliance for Action, he spent his career in the construction industry, including his previous position as executive director of the Concrete Pipe Association of New Jersey.
After his retirement from the alliance, Mr. Vieser was named president emeritus of the group.
