Service Date: Monday, Apr 24, 2006 at 10:30 am

Final Disposition: St. Joseph´s cemetery, Swedesboro, NJ

Edavide P. (Dave) Azzari, age 83, of Swedesboro, NJ died suddenly Wednesday April 19, 2006. Born in Camden on Apr. 8, 1923, the second son of Rosina & Giovanni Azzari, he moved to Swedesboro with his parents and siblings in 1928 and lived there his entire life. He was affectionately known as ‘Uncle Dave’ to many and the Mayor, the Chief and PopPop to his two grandchildren, Natalie & Gabrielle Azzari, whom he adored. His eyes lit up at just the mere mention of their names.

He served honorably in the Army in World War II and earned two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for bravery. He was promoted from Private to Staff Sergeant on the front lines of battle in France. When he returned from the war he worked for the Sanitary Baking Company in Swedesboro and it was there that he met his wife Silia “Sylvia” Canzanese. They were happily married for 40 years before losing her to cancer in 1990.

Eventually he left the bakery to work with his late brother “Alessio” Alex Azzari and together they started Azzari Construction Company.

His passions were family first, friends, cooking, making wine, gardening & civic duties. He was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church and was very involved in building the Church Social Hall.

In 1969 he was elected to Swedesboro Town Council and after serving for 15 years he was elected Mayor of Swedesboro in 1983. He served faithfully and diligently as Mayor until December, 2003 and he was inducted to the Mayor’s Hall of Fame for his 35 years of service to the town. His accomplishments are too many to mention. Without his integrity, hard work and resolve, Azzari Construction would not be the success it is today.

He is loved and respected by many and will be sadly missed by his daughter, Rosanne Azzari Bennett, her husband A. Paul Bennett, his son John A. Azzari, his wife, Leeann Alestra Azzari, and their two daughters, Natalie Ann and Gabrielle Marie Azzari, his sisters, Gloria Centonzo, Angelina Casella, Caroline Cueto and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was also pre-deceased by his brother, Alessio Azzari and sister Lydia Cucinotta.
