Arnold Philip Lijoi

WEST PATERSON - Arnold Philip Lijoi, former fire chief, died Sunday. He was 80.

Mr. Lijoi was a lifelong borough resident, said his son Jay. As supervisor of building and grounds with the Board of Education from 1956 to 1996, Mr. Lijoi made his living here, and as an active member of the Volunteer Fire Department, he dedicated his time and energy and put his life on the line for his hometown. "He really loved the Fire Department and being there to help people," Jay Lijoi said.

During his 59 years in the department, Mr. Lijoi served as fire chief from 1977 to 1991 and most recently held the title of assistant fire chief. He was a member of the North Jersey Volunteer Firemen's Association, New Jersey Fire Chiefs Association, Passaic County Firemen's Association, West Paterson Firemen's Relief Association, West Paterson Exempt Firemen's Association, Passaic County Mutual Aid Association (of which he was a founder) and West Paterson Helping Hands Committee. He was a life member of the New Jersey Fireman's Relief Association and New Jersey State Exempt Fireman's Association.

Jay Lijoi said his father loved the town, telling him that despite its small size, it has a big heart. "You could say the same for Arnold Lijoi," said his son.

Surviving are his wife, the former Irene Perugini; two other sons, Daniel and Sean; three brothers, Vincent, Fred and Joe; and six grandchildren.

Santangelo Funeral Home, 635 McBride Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

MARY SKETTINI ALIOTTA, 90, of Paramus, formerly of Paterson, died Saturday. Before retiring in 1982, she was a teacher in the Paterson school system for 40 years and had taught at Eastside, Central and Kennedy high schools. She was a parishioner of Annunciation R.C. Church, Paramus, and a former parishioner of St. Theresa R.C. Church, Paterson. She was a volunteer at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Paterson. Arrangements: Vander Plaat Colonial Home, Fair Lawn.
