Herbert Oberle, at 91; founded Mahwah Ford 44 years ago
Dated Friday, November 3, 2006

Herbert C. Oberle, founder of Mahwah Ford on Franklin Turnpike, died Thursday at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

Mr. Oberle, a Ho-Ho-Kus resident of 55 years, was 91.

The New York native, who played quarterback for James Monroe High School in the Bronx, went into the automobile business right after graduation, said his son, Dennis.

Mr. Oberle was parts manager for a Ford dealership in Newark when he received the Ford franchise for Mahwah in 1962. He opened the dealership in a converted gas station on Franklin Turnpike; Mahwah Ford is now at its third location, at 55 Franklin Turnpike.

"From what I understand, he was probably the first parts manager who ever became a car dealer," Dennis Oberle said. "It's quite a rarity."

Dennis Oberle said his father, who was active in the family dealership until eight years ago, always had an affinity for the "back end" of the business.

"He considered parts and service to be the good side of the business," Dennis Oberle said, "and sales to be the necessary evil."

Mr. Oberle's emphasis on service and parts helped Mahwah Ford weather gasoline crises and competition from foreign brands, his son said.

The dealership added Kia, a Korean brand, in 1997. But Mr. Oberle's preferred mode of transportation was a big Ford, such as a Crown Victoria. Dennis Oberle said his father stopped driving three years ago, but kept a 2005 Ford 500 in the garage.

Mr. Oberle is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons Donald of Mahwah and Dennis of Wyckoff; daughters Jane Donnelly and Judy Pisani, both of Ramsey; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 10 p.m. at Vander Plaat Funeral Home, 257 Godwin Ave., Wyckoff. The funeral Mass is Saturday at 10 a.m. at Church of the Presentation, 271 W. Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River.

The family suggested donations to the American Cancer Society, 20 Mercer St., Hackensack 07601.

ANTONIO CARIATI, 84, of Rutherford died Friday. He was born in Brazil. He had worked for the Rutherford Department of Public Works for 25 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a member of Rutherford UNICO and AARP. Arrangements: Macagna-Diffily Funeral Home, Rutherford.
