Joseph S. Buccellato

Real Estate Broker

Manasquan resident Joseph S. Buccellato died Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 72 years old.

Mr. Bucellato lived in Watchung before moving to Manasquan.

He was an owner/operator for 15 years of B. Brothers Building Co., So. Plainfield, retiring six years ago. Previously, he was employed as a real estate broker for 25 years in the family business, Tower Realty Co., So. Plainfield.

He was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, and a former member of St. Maryıs Stoney Hill Church, Watchung.

He was a member of the Italian American Club, North Plainfield, the Manasquan Elks Lodge No. 2534, and the St. Denis Knights of Columbus Council 3231, Manasquan.

Surviving are his wife, Irene Hook Buccellato; two sons, Joseph, Tucker, Ga., and Jeffrey, Middlesex; two daughters, Beth McAurther, South Plainfield, and Jo Ann Ertle, Holland Township; one brother, Sal, Lakewood; one sister, Angela Ehid, Middlesex; and three grandchildren, Alexis, Dante, and Gabriella.

Funeral arrangements are from the OıBrien Funeral Home, Wall Township. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Grace E. Hill

Former Local Resident

Basking Ridge resident Grace E. Kerr Hill, formerly of Brielle, died Friday, Nov. 2 in Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown.

She was 86 years old.

Born in Highland Park, Mrs. Hill lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Brielle in 1972. She resided in Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge.

She attended The Church in Brielle.

She was a member of the Manasquan Golf Club, and enjoyed playing the piano.

She was predeceased in 1999 by her husband Warren, in 1951 by her daughter, Nancy Jane Hill, and by her parents, Frank and Anna Mae Wolverton Kerr.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Valerie, Warren; one granddaughter, Cynthia Anne Mangan, and her husband, Kevin, Long Beach, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren, Colin P. Mangan, Long Beach, N.Y., and Dawn E. Hill, Norwalk, Conn.

Funeral arrangements were from the Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung.

Contributions in Mrs. Hillıs memory may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, North Jersey Chapter, 45 Springfield Avenue, Springfield, 07091.

Edward T. Smith

Former Brielle Councilman

Southampton resident Edward Thomas Smith, formerly of Brielle and Spring Lake Heights, died Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Evesham.

He was 75 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Smith lived in Brielle and Spring Lake Heights for most of his life before moving to Southampton three years ago.

He was employed with the Deluxe Reading and Topper Toy Co., in Northern New Jersey, retiring in 1975 as a national sales manager. He was a former owner of Stewartıs Drive-In restaurant, Brielle, from 1970 to 1982.

He was a member for most of his life of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, and was active in the parish-sponsored Boy Scouts, and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a communicant of Holy Eucharist Church, Tabernacle.

He was a Brielle councilman for 12 years, and was active in the Monmouth County Republican organization for many years. He was a founding member of the South Monmouth Regional Sewer Authority. He was active in the Manasquan-Brielle Little League as a coach in the 1960s, and was instrumental in the building of its first dedicated Little League field.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1950-1952.

Ed was an avid music fan, particularly of jazz, and played the accordion, piano and organ. He loved the ocean and spending time with his family at the beach, and traveling abroad.

He was predeceased in 1982 by his first wife, Dolores.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia; five sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Laura, Brielle, Michael and Linda, Point Pleasant Beach, Paul and Deborah, West Long Branch, Christopher and Kimberly, Spring Lake Heights, and Denis and Margaret-Mary, Spring Lake; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kathleen and James Alden, Spring Lake Heights, Patricia and Christopher Fische, and Susanne and Thomas Plunkett, all of Brick Township, and Faith Smith, Point Pleasant; 28 grandchildren; five stepsons; and one stepdaughter.

Funeral arrangements are from the Mathis Funeral Home, 58 North Main Street, Medford. Visitation will be 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Eucharist Church, Tabernacle, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. A graveside service will take place in St. Catharine cemetery, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Edward Thomas Smithıs memory may be made to Holy Eucharist Church, 520 Medford Lakes Road, Tabernacle, 08088.

Frances E. Hoppe, of Lavallette, died Saturday at the Fountain View Nursing Home, Lakewood.

She was 78 years old.

She was a homemaker.

She is a member of St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Lavallette.

Born in Little Ferry, she lived in Ortley Beach and Toms River prior to moving to Lavallette in 1975.

She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1985; a brother, Joseph Kubat; two sisters, Mary Hoar and Emily Tuma; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Surviving are one son, George K. of Toms River; two daughters, Irene Brennan of Point Pleasant, and Georgette F. Stone, Lavallette.

Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Grand Central Ave., Lavallette is handling the arrangements.

Raymond A. Kelley, of Point Pleasant, died last Wednesday at Brick Hospital.

He was 75 years old.

He was a sergeant for the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department for 37 years, retiring in 1986.

He attended St. Peterıs Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

Born in Newark, he moved to Point Pleasant 73 years ago.

He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Edward.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou; two sons, John, and William; and a sister, Esther Kelley, all of Point Pleasant.

Arrangements are by Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.

Helen Smith, of Point Pleasant, died last Monday at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood.

She was 95 years old.

She was a legal secretary prior to her retirement many years ago. She was a communicant of St. Peterıs Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach. She was a member of Catholic Daughters at St. Peterıs Church; the Business and Professional Womenıs Club of Point Pleasant Beach and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Point Pleasant Elks Lodge 1698.

She was born and lived in Jersey City before moving to Point Pleasant in 1954.

Her husband, Edmund, died in 1988.

Surviving are a son, Arthur Smith of Farmingdale; a sister, Violet Rudowski of Woodbridge; and several nieces and nephews.

Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, 812 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant Beach, is handling the arrangements.

Kenneth Robert Hurley Sr., of Point Pleasant, died last Tuesday at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, Philadelphia.

He was 56 years old.

He was vice president of Lighting Direction for 15 years at Warshauer Electric Company, Shrewsbury and was a recognized expert in the lighting industry. Prior to that, he was self-employed as the owner/operator of Ocean Electric, Ocean Township, for 20 years. He was an active member of the Landscape Lighting Association, the American Society of Interior Designers, the director of the American Lighting Association and a supporting member of the New Jersey Electrical Association.

He was a parishioner of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, Manasquan.

Born in Neptune, he lived in Wall for 18 years before moving to Point Pleasant six months ago.

His father, Milton, died in 1982.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Joanne Crine Hurley; a son, Kenneth Robert Jr. of Point Pleasant; his mother, Anne Hurley of Neptune; a sister, Marianne Disbrow of Brick; two lifelong friends, Richard and Cathy Kulaszewski; and several nieces and nephews.

OıBrien Funeral Home, Highway 70 at Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, is taking care of the arrangements.

Marion D. Powers, of Mantoloking, died last Wednesday at home.

She was 75 years old.

She was a self-employed attorney in the area for many years. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Bay Head, and a member of its Altar Rosary Society.

Born in Palmerton, Pa., she lived there for may years before moving to Mantoloking nearly 50 years ago.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Cremation will be private and under the direction of the Shore Memorial Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach.

John J. 'Jack' Serrell, of Newton, Mass., formerly of Mantoloking, died Oct. 28 at Fox Hill Nursing Home, Westwood, Mass., of pneumonia.

He was 85 years old.

He was a trustee of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association for 33 years, serving as treasurer for 24 years beginning in 1974. He was elected trustee emeritus un May, 2000.

He learned to fly while he was in England as director of International Centrifugal Sales Ltd., the foreign subsidiary of the Philadelphia-based Sharples Corporation. Earning his pilotıs license at the age of 40, he continued to fly for business and pleasure until he was 76. In addition to his private pilotıs license, he held airline transport pilot and flight instructor certificates and held multi-engine land plane, single-engine seaplane and instrument ratings.

Born in New York City, he graduated from Cornell University, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He held a masterıs degree in the same field from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1937, he began his career working for Sharples Corporation. In 1948, the company sent him oversees and in 1953 he became responsible for all Sharples affairs outside the United States. After his return to Philadelphia, he became vice president and them president of Sharples Corporation. In 1963 he left to act as a management consultant.

After many years as a resident of Haverford, Pa., he and his family moved to Mantoloking in 1973, where he joined the borough council. To keep members of the borough better informed about council meetings, he founded and became the first editor of The Mantoloking Reporter. He developed a keen interest in barrier beaches and how to protect ocean sand dunes. With the advice of Dr. Paul Godfrey of the University of Massachusetts, he successfully urged residents to adopt a dune preservation program.

He enjoyed golf, ocean swimming, sailing, computer programming and backgammon. He and his wife Toni were enthusiastic ballroom dancers.

A son, John Junius Serrell, died in 1997.

Surviving are his wife, Antoinette Casella Serrell; and a daughter, Anne Katherine Serrell-Jones of Newton Centre, Mass.

A memorial service was held at St. Paulıs Episcopal Church, 1135 Walnut St. Newton Highlands, Mass.

Carmine J. Nappa

Former Councilman

South Belmar resident Carmine J. Nappa died Friday, Nov. 16 in his home.

He was 77 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Nappa moved to South Belmar in 1965.

He was employed as a civil engineer with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Wall United Methodist Church.

Mr. Nappa served for over 20 years as a South Belmar councilman, and served for 25 years as the commissioner with the South Monmouth Regional Sewage Authority.

He was a past commander of American Legion Post No. 151, Belmar, a life member of American Legion Post No. 346, Neptune, and was a member of the South Belmar Democratic Club.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran, serving during World War II.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Charlotte; two sons and daughters-in-law, Vincent and Valeria, South Belmar, and Robert and Kimberly, Glen Gardner; five grandchildren, Antoinette, Carmine, Aleksandr, Gabrielle, and Madilynn; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.
