John Reilly King

Jacksonville Beach, Fla. resident John Reilly King, formerly of Spring Lake, died Wednesday, July 17 in the Shands Memorial Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla.

He was 52 years old.

Mr. King was born in New York City and had lived most of his life in Spring Lake.

He was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft and Pace University, New York City. Mr. King had attended St. Maryıs Law School, Austin, Texas and also did graduate work at Manhattan College and Monmouth University, Long Branch.

He was employed with Teleprompter Corporations, New York as a computer specialist, as well as Coca Cola Bottling Company, New York. Mr. King was a manager of Domestic Operations Telecommunications International Telephone and Telegraph. He was founder and chief executive of Alician Enterprises, New Jersey.

Mr. King was formerly president of the Spring Lake/Spring Lake Heights Soccer League and was actively involved in the Little League, Youth Basketball and swimming programs. He received a Citation of Bravery from Spring Lake for his rescue of four children who were carried out to sea. During his rescue, Mr. King kept the children afloat for two hours until he and the children were rescued by the Coast Guard.

Mr. King was a volunteer at Mission House, an affiliate of Catholic Charities, and St. Paul Church, Jacksonville, Fla.

He was predeceased by his mother, Ottilie Rosina King.

Surviving are his two sons, Ian and Alexander, both of Spring Lake; daughter, Alicia, Spring Lake; father and step-mother, Dr. Henry B. and Patricia King, Belmar; 11 brothers, Dr. Michael, Upper Montclair. Dr. Henry Jr., Bethesda, Md., Matthew, Mamaroneck, N.Y., Patrick, Syracuse, N.Y., Vincent, Cold Springs, N.Y., Anthony, Pittsfield, Mass., David, Holmdel, Gregory, Arlington, Va., Robert, Westwood, and Andrew and Timothy, both of Belmar; five sisters, Mary Jarmon, Spring Lake, Ottilie Droggitis, Bethesda, Md., Margaret, Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Wall, Rye, N.Y., and Bibiana Hueth, Wall Township; 38 nieces and nephews; and two grandnieces.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 26 in St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Kingıs memory may be made to the John Reilly King Memorial Fund for Mission House, Jacksonville, Fla. c/o Robert King, Treasurer, 307 8th Avenue, Belmar 07719.

Jean Richardson Koar, of Bay Point Harbour, Point Pleasant, died Nov. 25 at Meridian Hospice, Brick.

She was 73 years old.

She graduated from Williams High School and attended Hobart and William Smith colleges before graduating from Rhode Island School of Design. Her career took her to Manhattan, where she loved her work as a fashion buyer for Sweetbriar Shops, ladiesı specialty shops located throughout the Rocky Mountain states. She traveled extensively for her firm before marrying William H. Koar in 1961 and returning to Manhattan.

She was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Bay Head, where she served as an Altar Guild directress, and was publicity chairman and editor of the church newsletter for 13 years. She served for two terms on the Vestry, and was a member of the Long Range Planning Commission; the Architectural Review Committee; the Capital Fund Committee; and the All Saints Church Womenıs Guild, where she was very involved with the St. Nicholas Bazaar and other benefits.

After she moved to Mantoloking in 1965, she was involved in many civic and community activities. She was a life member of the New Jersey Parent Teacher Association, and involved at the local, county and state levels.

She was a member of the Seaweeders Garden Club for 32 years, and was especially proud of the fact that she was instrumental in bringing the Seaweeders their first National Garden Club award, the Augusta H. Brewer Award, given to the best Junior Garden Club in the nation. For five years, she worked on the editorial staff of the Leader newspaper. She also was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, where she served for several years as an editor of the clubıs Mainsheet.

Born in Meriden, Conn., she grew up in Stockbridge, Mass., in the red brick house built in 1830 by her great-great-grandfather, Thomas Carter. She lived in Manhattan and moved to Mantoloking in 1965 before moving to her latest residence in Point Pleasant.

She was predeceased by her husband, William Hawley Koar, in 1997; and her parents, Grace Carter Richardson and Australian Arthur A. Richardson.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Paul Tamke of Point Pleasant, and Cynthia and Tony Sewell of Coldspring, Texas; three stepchildren, Robert W. Koar and his wife Ginger of Allenhurst, Julia Koar Hermiston of Westfield, and Dr. William H. Koar III of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; a brother, David A. Richardson of East Greenwich, R.I.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, is in charge of arrangements.

Anthony J. Rom, of Lavallette, died last Thursday at home.

He was 80 years old.

He was a plant supervisor at Bergen Cable Technologies, Lodi, before retiring in 1987.

He was an Army veteran, serving in Panama during World War II. He was a communicant, usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church, Lavallette, and was a member of the Holy Name Society, Knight of Columbus Council 8415, Lavallette, and of the American Legion Post 77, Paterson. He also was active in the Senior Citizens Organization of Lavallette.

Born and raised in Paterson, he moved to Lavallette in 1987, where he had summered since 1955.

Surviving are his wife, Loretta Lacava Rom; a son and daughter-in-law, Domenic and Kim of Wayne; a daughter and son-in-law, Rose and Manuel Perez of Toms River; a sister, Madeline Siearkowski of Wayne; and two grandsons, Alexander and Gregory.

Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 706 Grand Central Ave., Lavallette, is handling the arrangements.

Elsie Exarhos, of Point Pleasant, died last Friday at the home of her daughter.

She was 87 years old.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Harvey Memorial Methodist Church, Point Pleasant, the Harvey Memorial Boosters and the Republican Club of Point Pleasant.

Born in Neptune, she moved to Point Pleasant 63 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Pierre, in October; and a daughter Valerie Roussos in 2001.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sharyn and Richard Vadimski of Toms River; a sister, Florence Chenal of Brick; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Anthony Raphael De Luca, of Lavallette, died Friday at CareOne of Morris in Parsippany.

He was 80 years old.

He was an executive at New Jersey Bell for 39 years before retiring in 1980.

He proudly served his country during World War II in the Army Signal Corps in Europe.

He was an active coach in the Millburn Little League Baseball program for 10 years, and was president of the Summit Kiwanis Club. He was a former commodore of the Lavallette Yacht Club, and an active member of Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Normandy Beach.

Born in Newark, he lived in Maplewood before moving to Millburn, where he lived for 30 years before moving to Lavallette in 1980.

He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Wiesmiller DeLuca.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Anthony and Nancy of Chatham; a daughter, Margaret DeLuca of Mays Landing; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher and Michael.

Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main St., Madison, is handling the arrangements.

Otto Schmidt Jr., of Brielle and Vero Beach, Fl., whose daughter lives in Mantoloking, died Monday at home following a long illness.

He was 90 years old.

He was a longtime resident of Chatham and Mantoloking before moving to Brielle in 1999. He spent the winter months in Vero Beach, Florida. He was a member of The Church in Brielle and the Bay Head Yacht Club.

A graduate of Summit High School, Mr. Schmidt started his business career in the early 1940s with a Dodge Plymouth dealership in Summit. In 1964, he transferred to Ford products with the introduction of the Ford Mustang. He ran the successful Schmidt Ford dealership in Summit until his retirement in 1970.

He was past president of the Summit Kiwanis Club, a former trustee of the Stanley Congregational Church, Chatham, and a former member of Canoe Brook Country Club, Summit.

Born in Newark, he lived in Summit before moving to Chatham and Mantoloking, then Brielle and Vero Beach.

He was predeceased in 1978 by his first wife, the late Edna V. Schmidt.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Whalley Schmidt; three daughter and sons-in-law, Pamela and Stanley Bess of Chatham, Deborah and Peter Ehrgood of Sinking Spring, Pa.; and Sandra and Robert McIntyre of Mantoloking; six grandchildren, Cynthia B. Moran, Andrew Bess, Amy B. Wachtel, Kristin and Diane Ehrgood and Stuart McIntyre; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at The Church in Brielle, 821 Riverview Dr., Brielle, on Friday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. Wm. A. Bradley & Son, Funeral Directors, Chatham, is handling the arrangements. Additional information is available at www.bradleyfuneralhomes.com.

Joan A. Connor Flipse, of Point Pleasant, died Monday at Brick Hospital.

She was 72 years old.

She was a teacher/librarian at Point Pleasant Middle School for the Point Pleasant Board of Education for 20 years, retiring in 1992. She received her bachelorıs degree from New Jersey Teacherıs College in 1970. She had a long career in education, and was an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teacherıs sorority.

Since retiring in 1992, she traveled with her husband extensively across country, learning about each and every location they visited. In addition to being an avid reader, she loved to paint, sew, and spend time with family and friends on Lake Bomoseen in Castleton, Vt. She was a communicant of St. Marthaıs Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant.

Born in Troy, N.Y., she lived in Paterson before moving to Point Pleasant in 1952.

She was predeceased by a sister, Regina Amos, in 1999.

Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Peter; five daughters, Pamela Fuchs of New York City, Robyn Flipse of Bradley Beach, Petrice DiVanno of Sandy Hook, Conn., Kristen Nolan of Brick, and Maarti James of Upper Montclair; and a sister, Kathleen Dabney of St. Petersburg, Fla.

Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick, is handling the arrangements.

Dr. Harold N. Hansen

Manasquan resident Harold N. Hansen died Tuesday, Dec. 3 in his home.

He was 78 years old.

Born in New Brunswick, Dr. Hansen was a 30 year resident of the Jersey Shore area.

He was a self-employed clinical psychologist in Brielle, for many years.

He was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Psychological Association, the New Jersey Psychological Association, the Bay Head Yacht Club and the Manasquan River Golf Club.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Counter Intelligence Corp.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Jo Anne Duerr Hansen; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Norman and Jane, Maine, and Nis and Jo, and Peter, all of California; one daughter, Ingrid Forest, New Jersey; three stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Robert and Linda Duerr, and Scott and Leslie Duerr, all of Brielle, and Charles and Kate Duerr, Manasquan; one brother, Henry M., Denmark; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. A memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 in the funeral home.

Elizabeth W. Vogel

Sarasota, Fla. resident Elizabeth "Betty" W. Vogel, formerly of Manasquan, died Monday, Nov. 25.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Ansonia, Conn., Mrs. Vogel moved to Manasquan in the early '50s, where she lived until retiring to Sarasota, Fla.

She was a graduate of Northfield School for Girls, and Wheaton College, Norton, Mass., where she excelled in track and soccer.

After college graduation, she was employed as the director of the Nassau Council of Girl Scouts, Long Island, N.Y., and later taught high school English in Ansonia, Conn.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan.

She was an active volunteer for many years with the Monmouth County Family and Children Service, and the local Parent Teacher Association.

She became an avid golfer and gardener after moving to Florida, and enjoyed entertaining her family during their visits.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, George A. Vogel, and her parents, William and Emma Whitney.

Surviving are three daughters, Whitney Armstrong, Manasquan, Carol Cote, Venice, Fla., and Narragansett, R.I., and Elizabeth Graham, Wellesley, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 in the funeral home.
