Gladys M. Bailey

Belmar resident Gladys M. Bailey died Monday, Dec. 2 in Medi-Center, Neptune.

She was 103 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs Bailey lived moved to Belmar in 1946.

She was a communicant of St. Rose Church, Belmar.

She was predeceased in 1961 by her husband, Robert, in 1984 by her daughter, Eileen Stone, and by her two brothers, W. Leroy Getchius and H. Norman Getchius, and her sister, S. Irene Eldridge.

Surviving are one cousin, Regina Lacey, Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. Visiting will be at 9 a.m. today in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rose Church, Belmar.

Edward A. Palmer

Wall Township resident Edward A. Palmer died Thursday, Nov. 28 in Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown.

He was 80 years old.

Born in West Belmar, Mr. Palmer was a lifelong resident of Wall.

He was the owner and vice president of Wall Auto Wreckers for his entire working career before retiring in the '90s.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a corporal in London, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, and Tunisia.

Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Gloria Raffetto Palmer; two devoted sons and one daughter-in-law, Edward A., Aberdeen, and Gary and Pamela, Manasquan; one brother, Otto A., Manasquan; and two sisters, Betty A. Osterlund and Patricia A. Surgent, West Belmar; and three grandchildren, Jessica A., Gary A. Jr., and Luke A. Palmer.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Melvina H.Cooke

Allenwood, Wall Township resident Melvina Holloway Cooke died Thursday, Nov. 28 in Neptune Rehabilitation & Care Center, Neptune.

She was 83 years old.

Born in Allenwood, she resided there for her entire life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent H. Cooke, her parents, Evelyn and Frank Holloway, her brothers, Leonard, Harry and James Holloway, her sister, Lottie Haley, and one grandson, Jeffrey Ortiz.

Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Gail and Juan Ortiz, Bradley Beach, and Brenda Faye Cooke, Lawrenceville; one brother, Albert Holloway, Allenwood; one granddaughter and her husband, Lisa and Paul Hesse; one great-granddaughter and her husband, Lizbeth and Anthony Gonzalez, one great-grandson, Paul Hesse Jr; two great-great-grandsons, Darrin Devlin and Anthony Gonzalez Jr.; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Glenn and Carol Cooke, Manasquan, and Raymond and Gay Cooke, Florida; four nieces, June Sosidian, Janet Larson, Pat Holly, and Jean Rodgers; and two nephews, James and Roger Holloway.

Funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today in Allenwood cemetery at Allenwood Church.

Contributions in Mrs. Cooke's memory may be made to Allenwood Church, 3109 Atlantic Ave., Allenwood, 08720, to ARC of Monmouth, or to ARC of Mercer.

Ann S. Farhat

Wall Township resident Ann S. Farhat died Wednesday, Nov. 27 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 80 years old.

Born and raised in Bayonne, Mrs. Farhat moved to Wall Township 20 years ago.

She was employed as a secretary for many years with Westinghouse Electric Corp., Jersey City, retiring in 1981.

She was a communicant of Holy Innocents Church, Neptune, and was a former member of Our Lady of Assumption Church, Bayonne.

She was a member of the Manasquan Elks Ladies Auxiliary.

She was predeceased in 1943 by her brother, Bartholomew Salerno, and in 1998 by her sister, Josephine Mroz.

Surviving are her loving husband of 57 years, Philip W. Farhat; one brother, S. Joseph Salerno, Saddle Brook; three sisters, Mary Mattaliano, Wall, Antoinette Sanborn, Bayonne, and Louise Pataranick, Wall; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Contributions in Mrs. Farhat's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07702.

Richard E. Otto

Greentown, Pa., resident Richard E. Otto, formerly of Sea Girt, died Friday, Nov. 23 in Community Medical Center, Scranton, Pa.

He was 73 years old.

Born in Jackson Heights, N.Y., Mr. Otto lived in lived in various parts of the country before moving to Sea Girt, where he resided for 24 years prior to moving to Greentown in 1995.

He was a graduate of Dwight Prep, New York City, and attended Rutgers University.

He was a self-employed business owner since 1975.

He was a member of Manasquan Elks Lodge No. 2534, and a former member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club. He served as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 55, Sea Girt, and volunteered as a coach with the Spring Lake/Sea Girt Little League and the Manasquan/Sea Girt youth soccer organization.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1950-1954 with the Fifth Air Force in Korea and Japan.

He was predeceased in 2000 by his son, Michael C.; his father, Richard H.; his mother, Kathleen Condon; his brother, Robert; and his step-father, Raymond Condon.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Janet Forbes Otto; and one son, Richard F., Memphis, Tenn.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Margaret McLaughlin

Point Pleasant resident Margaret S. McLaughlin, whose daughter lives in Wall Township, died Monday Nov. 25 in her home.

She was 73 years old.

For over 50 years, she was the owner/operator, along with her husband, Tom, of Mclaughlin's, Point Pleasant Beach, retiring in 1998.

Known as "Nana" to her family, Mrs. McLaughlin was the number one supporter of her nine children, and enjoyed gardening, bowling, and feeding her birds, reading on the beach at her Florida home, and visiting New Mexico. She supported many organizations, and had an infectious smile.

She was predeceased on Sept. 30 by her husband, Tom; a son-in-law, Robert A. Cooper; her granddaughter, Jennifer McLaughlin; and two brothers, Archie and Jim Brodie.

Surviving are five sons and three daughters-in-law, Tom and Pearl, Cloudcroft, N.M., Kevin, Point Pleasant, Jim and Lori, Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael and Mary Ellen, Point Pleasant, and John, Hoboken; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Pam and Don Shortreed, Point Pleasant, Susan McLaughlin, Cloudcroft, N.M., Patty and Paul Lawrence, Wall, and Katie Cooper, Point Pleasant; one sister, Kay Gleason, Manasquan; and 13 grandchildren, Scott, Keith, and Ryan Shortreed, Kacie Hemmingson, Brenna, Shane, Bryan, Craig, Douglas, Liam, and Aidan McLaughlin, and Mary Kate and Kelsey Cooper; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Brick Township.

Laverne M. Patane

Oakhurst, Ocean Township resident Laverne Mayer Patane died Monday, Dec. 2 in her son's home in Wall Township.

She was 84 years old.

Born in Weehawken, Mrs. Patane lived in several locations during World War II, and in Lavallette before moving to Oakhurst in 1959.

She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Trenton.

She was employed in several professional positions, most recently for 15 years as an administrative assistant with the Monmouth County Board of Social Services, Freehold, retiring in 1986. Prior to her marriage, she was employed in New York City for several years.

After retirement, Laverne traveled extensively with her husband, and was always fond of New York City. She will be remembered as a beloved wife, loving mom, and cherished grandmom, and for her artistic talents, boundless energy and curiosity, and a kind and warm heart.

She was recently predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Salvatore "Pat" Patane; and by her parents, May Lillian Lampe and Richard Ransom Mayer.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Victor J. and Ana K Patane, Wall; and three grandchildren, Alexandra, Stephen, and Kristopher.

Funeral arrangements are from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Visiting will be 7 to 9 p.m. tonight in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow in the funeral home, followed by a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Margaret's Church, Spring Lake.

Melvin J. Neary Sr.

Belmar resident Melvin J. Neary Sr. died Tuesday, Dec. 3 in his daughter's Cape Coral, Fla. home.

He was 82 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Neary lived in Belmar for many years.

He was employed for 30 years with Reem Manufacturing Company, East Brunswick, before retiring.

He had been a professional boxer during the 1930s and 40s.

He was a life member of VFW Post No. 1597, Croydon, Pa.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in North Africa and Europe.

Mr. Neary was predeceased in 1981 by his wife, Gladys Wilcox Neary; and in 1997 by his son, Melvin "Mickey" J. Neary Jr.

Surviving are one daughter, Dolly M. Webb, formerly of Brick Township; two grandchildren, Joseph and Patricia Webb; and one great-granddaughter, Alexis.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. Visiting will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m Sunday, Dec. 8 in the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Monmouth Memorial Park cemetery, Tinton Falls.

Mildred W. Reilly

Manasquan resident Mildred Winifred Reilly died Tuesday, Jan. 21 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

Born and raised in Englewood, Miss Reilly lived in Roselle Park before moving to Manasquan 20 years ago.

She was a 1937 graduate of New Jersey College for Women.

She was employed as an accountant with the Helmsley Real Estate Corporation, New York City, retiring 21 years ago.

She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Roselle, for many years, and was a church school teacher, and an active member of St. Catherine's Group of Episcopal Church Women.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Lillian Reilly and Patricia LaVance, and one brother-in-law, Joseph E. LaVance Jr.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.
