Virginia L. Gunther

Belmar resident Virginia L. Gunther, died Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 91 years old.

Ms. Gunther was born in Jersey City, and she lived in Maywood before moving to Spring Lake Heights 27 years ago. She moved to Belmar three years ago.

She was a registered nurse at the VA Hospital, East Orange, for many years until her retirement in 1973.

Ms. Gunther was a former communicant of St. Margaret Church, Spring Lake, and St. Elizabeth Church, Avon. She was an active volunteer in many community services in the shore area including Meals on Wheels.

She also served as lieutenant in the US Army Nurses Corps., in the battlefields of Europe during WWII.

Ms. Gunther is survived by her brother, Robert K. Gunther, Belmar; sister, Bernice Dempsey, Fla.; 15 nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the St. Rose Church, Belmar. Interment was held at St. Joseph cemetery, Hakensack.

Edward C. Mills

Former Manasquan resident Edward C. Mills, died Monday, Sept. 15 at his home in Garfield.

He was 29 years old.

Mr. Mills was born in Ridgewood, and he previously resided in Fair Lawn. He most recently lived in Garfield with his two big dogs, Cabo and Casey, whom he loved tenderly.

He was happily employed by Financial Services Inc., Glen Rock, as a technology implementation manager.

Mr. Mills also loved to fish and spent weekends on the beach with his family.

He was predeceased by his loving grandparents, Captain Edward and Katherine Kuiken, Fair Lawn.

Mr. Mills is survived by his parents, Andrew and Linda Mills, Manasquan; brother Andrew and his wife Jennifer Mills, Manasquan; a brother, William Mills, Delray Beach, Fla.; brother, Nicholas Mills, Manasquan; two nephews, Charles and Peter Mills, Manasquan; and one niece, Mary Kate Mills, Manasquan.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. A graveside prayer was said at Valleau cemetery, Ridgewood.

Matthew Louis Rogich

Brick resident Matthew Louis Rogich, who has relatives that live in Manasquan, died Thursday, Sept. 18 at his home.

He was 15 years old.

Mr. Rogich was born in Long Branch, and he was a student at the Children¹s Center, Neptune.

Surviving are his parents, Mark L. and Melinda Schmal Rogich; a brother, Justin Lamb; his paternal grandparents, Ann and Lou Rogich; his maternal grandfather, William Schmal; great-grandmothers, Frances Gherdovich and Helen Orr; Aunts and Uncles, Karen and Mike Arecchi, Betsy and Peter Craz and Jennifer Wyatt.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Burial followed in St. Catharine¹s cemetery, Sea Girt.

Frederick Joseph

Walsifer Sr.

Kill Devil Hills, N.C. resident Frederick Joseph Walsifer Sr., whose son and daughter-in-law live in Belmar, died Thursday, Aug. 14 in an Elizabeth City, N.C. hospital.

He was 74 years old.

Mr. Walsifer was born in Newark and he was a retired truck driver and member of the Teamster¹s Union 701.

He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict with the 11th Airborne Division.

Mr. Walsifer was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Freid Walsifer; and his parents, Frederick Lawrence and Anna Farrell Walsifer.

Surviving are his two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Brian McIver, Kill Devil Hills, and Amy and James Holman, Monticello, Ga.; a son and daughter-in-law, Frederick Jr. and Donna Walsifer, Belmar; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Dot Walsifer, Belmar; and 8 grandchildren, Peter and Catherine Walsifer, Leah and Lyndsy Holman, and Shauna, Kaelyn, Courtney and Meghan McIver.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Belmar. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated and can be made to the American Cancer Society or your local county hospice. To register online, visit twifordfh.com. Marguerite M. Young

Brielle resident Marguerite Motzenbecker Young, died Monday, Sept. 22 at the Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 79 years old.

Mrs. Young was born and raised in Newark, and lived in Livingston, before moving to Brielle 20 years ago.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed sailing with her late husband, Jim Young, who died in 1993.

Mrs. Young was a communicant of St. Denis RCC, Manasquan.

Surviving are her son Christopher Young, Point Pleasant; her daughter and son-in-law, Peg and Bob Wright, Whitehouse Station; her brother Richard Motzenbecker, Asbury Park; her sister Mary Long, Moorestown; 7 grandchildren, James, Jonathan and David Wright, and Christopher James, Kyle, Jillian and Casey Young; a niece, Kathleen McGraw and her husband, Bill.

Visitation will be held at 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at the O¹Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. A Funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow, at the St. Denis RCC, Manasquan. Entombment will be held at St. Catharine¹s cemetery, Wall Township.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Young¹s memory to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad Street, Shrewsbury, 07702.

Lorraine Murphy

Belmar resident Lorraine Murphy, died Monday, Sept. 22 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Wall Township.

She was 79 years old.

Mrs. Murphy was born in Brooklyn, and she moved to the shore 65 years ago, living in Wall Township and Belmar.

She was a homemaker and for a short while she worked as a realtor for Shire Real Estate, Wall Township.

Mrs. Murphy was also a communicant of St. Rose Church, Belmar.

She was predeceased by her husband Harry, 1997, and her son John, 1986.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Ellen Quinn Murphy, Spring Lake; 4 daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen and Matthew King, Mamaroneck, NY, Jane and Marc Cella, Hinsdale, Ill, Christine and Stephen Ferri, Pasadena, Calif., and Geralding and Christopher Duncombe, Plymouth, Ma.; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Cliff Farren, Belmar; 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, where visitation will be held tomorrow 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Family and friends will gather on Saturday 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, Belmar. Interment will be held at St. Catharine cemetery, Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated and can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson¹s Research, Grand Central Station PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10164-3772.

Norman Morgan

Brielle resident Norman Morgan Sr. died Thursday, March 25 in his home after a long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

He was 71 years old.

Born in Neptune, he was a life long resident of Brielle.

He graduated from Manasquan High School.

A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the Army’s 82 & 187 Airborne Division and received several medals for his service.

He was employed by Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck for 30 years before retiring in 1993 as an Ordnance Supervisor.

Mr. Morgan was predeceased by his wife Marion C. Owens Morgan; his parents William and Martha Morgan; his brothers Edsol, Leonard Meldon Morgan; and his sister Marva Degross.

He is survived by his five children Valerie Owens-Echols, Pocono Lake, Penn, Dianne Carlise, Springville, Tenn, Norman Morgan Jr., Brielle, Steven Morgan, Brielle, and Wendy Morgan, Brielle;his seven grandchildren; his four brothers Alfred, William, Eugene, and Everette Morgan, Brielle; and his two sisters Roselle Travis, Brielle and Mae Ficklin, Neptune; his caring friend and companion Frances Walker, Neptune; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Marie Kowalsky

Lakewood resident Marie J. Fodero Kowalsky died Sunday, March 28 in her home.

She was 75 years old.

Born in Long Branch, she lived in West Long Branch, then Wall Township for 26 years before coming to Lakewood.

She served as a court attendant for the City of Freehold

She served as a committee person in Wall Twp. District six for 10 years.

She was a long time member of the Wall Twp. Republican Club. She was also a member of the Lions Club International, Wall.

She was an excellent cook, gave generously of her time, and was a wonderful wife and mother.

Mrs. Kowalsky is survived by her husband Thomas S. Kowalsky Sr.; her two daughters Jacqueline Rich, West Long Branch, Toni Lynn Kihntoph, Virginia Beach, Va.; her step-daughter Carol Clark, Fla.; her step-son Thomas Kowalsky Jr.; her grandchildren Elise, Christopher, Kevin, Kathleen, Kristopher, Stephen, Cathy, and Jerry; her great-grandchildren Crystal and Misty; her great, great-grandchild; her brother Rocky Fodero; her two sisters Pauline Calabrese and Rosie Martin.

Services will be held by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall at 10 A.M. on Friday, April 2. This will be followed by a committal at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel cemetery, Long Branch.

Catherine Nelan

Spring Lake Heights resident Catherine Nelan died Saturday, March 27 in her home.

She was 95 years old.

She was a homemaker.

Born in County Roscommon, Ireland, she settled in Jersey City in 1926 before moving to Spring Lake Heights 40 years ago.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Patrick J., in 2002.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Elizabeth, of Port Orange, Fla., Peter and Elizabeth, Sayreville, John and Maria, of Wall Township; daughters Mary Nelan and Nora Slawinski, of Spring Lake Heights, and Catharine and her husband Anthony Pluchino, Cary, N.C; a sister, Nora Flynn, of Wall Township; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services begin today from O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine Roman Catholic Church, Spring Lake.

Burial will be at St. Catharine cemetery, Sea Girt.

James P. Slaperud

Wall Township resident James P. Slaperud died Tuesday, March 23, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 70 years old.

He had been employed as an engineer and later as an executive for Northwestern Bell and later for AT&T, New York City, for 35 years before retiring in 1987.

He was a graduate of Fargo Central High School and North Dakota State University.

He was born in Grand Forks, N.D.

He was an avid golfer and vacationed frequently at Marco Island, Fla.

Surviving are a wife of 10 years, Maureen; two sons, John, of Minneapolis, Minn., and David, of Landing; a daughter, Cathy, of Loveland, Colo.; a stepson, Jimmy Poore, and a stepdaughter, Kristen Poore; two grandchildren, Jessica and Jodell Born; and his two puppies, Bailey and Brandy.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the Wall Community First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 166, Allenwood, NJ 08720.
