John P. Kiernan

Wall Township resident John P. Kiernan died Thursday Jan. 29, at the Waterford Glen Assisted Living in Wall.

He was 92 years old.

Born and raised in Nutley, he lived in Stillwater for 40 years before recently coming to Wall. Mr. Kiernan was the self-employed owner and operator of his own bus company, which provided buses for St. Mary’s School in Nutley from 1942 to 1965.

After retiring, he enjoyed restoring antique automobiles and in later years, cared for his beloved wife who had Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was predeceased by his wife Eleanor Newkirk Kiernan; and his son Philip Kiernan.

Mr. Kiernan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and John Kropke of Sea Girt; his son and daughter-in-law, John and Patti Kiernan, Melbourne, Fla.; his daughter-in-law Cathleen Kiernan of Nutley; 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sister Mary Kiernan of Deerfield Beach, Fla.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall. Friends and family were invited to a memorial tribute dinner for Mr. Kiernan and his wife at Waterford Glen Assisted Living.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated and can be made to the Greater NJ Chapter Alzheimer’s Disease Assoc., P.O. Box 39, Denville 07834.

Sophie “Sandy” Sawyer Johnson

Wall Township resident Sophie “Sandy” Sawyer Johnson died Saturday Jan. 31, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 79 years old.

“Sandy” was a graduate of Houtzdale High School in Houtzdale, Pa. and in 1948 graduated from Mary’s Help Hospital College of Nursing in San Francisco, Calif.

She was a registered nurse, a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps and was employed at Halloran General Hospital in Staten Island, the Albany VA Hospital, and East Orange VA Hospital. It was at the East Orange Facility where she met her late husband, Walter J. Johnson, and later they founded and operated the Johnson Funeral Home in Wall until their retirement in 1999.

Sandy was also employed for many years by Dr. Robert Rankin in Brielle.

Born in raised in Parsonville, Pa., she lived in Bradley Beach before moving to Wall over 40 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Walter J. Johnson, 1999; and her sister, Mariam Conti.

Surviving are her daughter Wendy Lynn Johnson Doerre, Wall; her brother George Sawyer of Niagara Falls, NY; two sisters, Ann Conti of Flushing and Jean Sawyer, Suffern, NY; a sister-in-law, Irene Harmstead, Toms River; 5 nephews, 3 nieces, and a host of great nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall. Funeral and Entombment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Sandy had requested memorial donations be made to either the Associated Humane Societies, 2960 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07753 or the Popcorn Park Zoo, P.O. Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731.

Peter Edwin Johe

Former Sea Girt resident Peter Edwin Johe died Sunday Feb. 1, at his home in Chatham, after a three-year battle with colon cancer.

He was 45 years old.

Mr. Johe was born at the US Naval Hospital in Newport, RI, in 1958.

He had lived in several states growing up and graduated from the Jeb Stuart High School in Annandale, Va. He lived in Bloomfield and Sea Girt prior to moving to Chatham 7 years ago.

Mr. Johe received a degree in civil engineering in 1981 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He had also received a Masters in business administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

At the time of his death, he had worked for 17 years with the NYC Dept. of Transportation. He was the director of East River Bridges where he oversaw the rehabilitation of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge and the Queensborough Bridge. Prior to that he had worked for the engineering firm of Edwards and Kelsey, Morristown.

He had a passion for learning about and visiting massive structures, especially bridges, dams and buildings. He was a devoted husband and father and had a love of travel, golf, running and football. He had visited all of the 48 continental United States during his lifetime and had run two marathons.

Mr. Johe held professional engineering licenses in both NY and NJ. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the St. Patrick’s Church, and an active volunteer with Chatham Recreation Dept.

He was predeceased by his mother Martha Suzanne Johe.

Mr. Johe is survived by his beloved wife Jennifer; he was the loving father of Meredith, age 11, and Steven, age 10. He is also survived by his father Richard, NC; and his sister Barbara Cardenas, Calif.;

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated today at St. Patrick’s Church, Chatham, at 10 a.m. Interment will be private. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, Chatham.

Donations in his memory may be made to either Atlantic Home Care and Hospice, 33 Bleeker St., Millburn, NJ 07041 or St. Patrick’s Church.

Josephine DeAngelis

Wall Township resident Josephine DeAngelis died Saturday Jan. 31, at her residence.

She was 81 years old.

Mrs. DeAngelis was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

She had worked as a seamstress for local infant clothing companies, and she was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Asbury Park.

Born and raised in Neptune, she lived in Wall for 32 years.

Mrs. DeAngelis was predeceased by four brothers, Charles, Tony, Sam and Pat Ferrara; and four sisters, Anna Manzi, Louise Berardesco, Rose Buonano, and Mamie Spino.

She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Arthur DeAngelis, daughters, Barbara A. McGuinness, Joanna M. Mudrick and her husband Paul A. Mudrick, all of Wall; brothers, Carl and Gene Ferrara, both of Fla.; and two grandchildren, Douglas and his wife Dianne McGuinness and Meghan McGuinness.

A service will begin today at 9 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel RC Church in Asbury Park. Burial will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Sea Girt.

Donations may be made to the Meridian Hospice, 615 Hope Road, 1st Floor Build. 3, Eatontown, NJ 07724.

William E. Covey

Brielle resident William E. Covey died Friday Jan. 30, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, after a three-year battle with multiple myeloma.

He was 73 years old.

Mr. Covey was the founder and Chairman of the Board of Hair Systems Inc., with its headquarters in Englishtown. During his tenure with Hair Systems Inc., he expanded the company from 5 employees to over 125, with a subsidiary located in the United Kingdom. Hair Systems Inc. is a leader in the hair reactive hair care industry, supplying national and international recognized brand names.

Born on Jan. 31, 1931, in Centreville, Maryland, to the late William Edward and Elsie Mae Covey. Upon his entry into seventh grade, the family relocated to Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated in 1948 from Wilmington High School and entered the University of Delaware. In 1952, he graduated from his beloved alma mater as a chemical engineer and later went on to earn his professional engineering license. He will be missed by his fellow fraternity brothers of Sigma Nu, Delta Kappa Chapter. In 1965, he moved his family to Maplewood, and subsequently took permanent residence in Brielle, in 1971.

He was an avid supporter of the Blue Hen football team which won its first National Championship this year. When he was not in his season ticket seats to watch the Blue Hens, he could be found deep sea fishing and sailing the waters of the world. Another important part of Mr. Covey’s life was his active involvement with Boy Scouts, having served as a Weblo Leader, Cub Master and Scout Master with Troop 63 in Brielle.

Mr. Covey is a veteran of the US Army, having served as a Lieutenant in the Korean War from 1952 to 54’. On April 11, 1953, he married his life partner, Marjorie Minehan. This past year, Mr. and Mrs. Covey celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with family and friends before taking their well-deserved second honeymoon. Mr. Covey will be remembered for his leadership, warm greetings, bear hugs, strong handshakes, unique ability to relate to everyone and his gift of sharing laughter with whomever he came into contact with.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his four children, Marjorie Covey Borsina and her husband Larry, Anne Covey Morris and her husband Michael, William E. Covey Jr. and his wife Mabel, and Sharon Covey Griffith; 9 grandchildren, William E. Covey, III, Aimee Sowu, Anthony Richardson, Trevor Covey, DJ Griffith, Sarah Griffith, Matthew Griffith, Katy Morris and Michael Morris; and his devoted sister Elsie Carey.

Relatives and friends are welcome today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, and tomorrow from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Saint Denis Church, Manasquan, where he was a parishioner.

Catherine Scalcione

Wall Township resident Catherine Lauria Scalcione died Saturday Jan. 31, at her home.

Born in the Bronx, she lived in Jersey City prior to living in Wall Township 11 years ago.

She was a homemaker, and a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy, Jersey City.

Mrs. Scalcione lived her life for her family and also loved nature and her pets dearly.

She was predeceased by her brother Frank Lauria.

Mrs. Scalcione is survived by her husband, Alfred Scalcione; her sons, John Scalcione, Spotswood, Robert and his wife Myrian Scalcione, Spotswood, and Gregory and his wife Maria Scalcione, Brick; her daughter Laura and her husband Joseph Caruso, Wall; her brother Anthony Lauria, Lynhurst; her sisters, Rose Pucci, Woodbridge, Rita Kavanaugh, Brick, Ann Morrell, Brick, Phyllis Trafficante, Point Pleasant Beach, and Lucille Mack, Jersey City; her grandchildren, Christopher, Olivia and Alexander Caruso, Gina Barco, Michael and Isabella Scalcione; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Home, Brick. A Funeral Mass was held at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, followed by entombment at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Humane Society, 2960 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07724.

William C. Drennan

Belmar resident William C. Drennan died Tuesday Jan. 27, at his residence.

He was 86 years old.

Mr. Drennan was born in Bayonne, and moved to Belmar 6 years ago.

He was a retired teacher from Bayonne High School, and a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church, Avon. He was also an Army veteran of WWII, serving as a Captain and tank commander. He received the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts and the Croix de Guerre from the French Government.

Mr. Drennan was predeceased by his wife Florence McCarthy Drennan, 2003.

He is survived by two sons and their wives, William C. Jr. and Marilyn of Lakewood, and Kevin and Janet of Va.; four daughters and their spouses, Patricia Drennan, Fla., Mary Claire and John Kinsley, Avon, Joan Markowski of Wall, and Kathleen and Robert Salera, Toms River; three brothers and a sister, Joseph, Vincent, Robert and Catherine Drennan; and 15 grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Elizabeth Church, Avon.

In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated and can be made to the Christian Appalachian Project, P.O. Box 459 Hagerhill, Ky. 41222.

Alex McDonald

Spring Lake Heights resident Alex McDonald died Friday Jan. 30, at his residence at The Arbors.

He was 90 years old.

Mr. McDonald was a principle for the Roxbury Elementary School before retiring in 1969, and he was a member of the NJ Education Association.

He was a US Army veteran during WWII from 1943 to 1945.

Mr. McDonald was a communicant of St. Catharine’s RC Church, Spring Lake, a member of SCAMP, St. Catharine’s Association of Mature Persons, Holy Innocents Society, Holy Name Society and was a grand knight in the Knights of Columbus No. 5611, all in Spring Lake. He was also a member of the VFW Post No. 8867 and the American Legion Post No. 0346, Neptune.

He earned his undergraduates degree in education from Penn State University in State College, Pa., and his Master’s degree in education from NYU in NYC.

Mr. McDonald was a 50-year retreat man for the 6-3 Club in Malvern, Pa., a member of the Belmar Fishing Club, and he enjoyed golfing.

Born and raised in East Norwegian Township, Pa., he lived in Wilkes Barre, Pa., Mt. Holly, and Dover, before moving to Spring Lake Heights 44 years ago.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Helen [Boylan] in 1999; two brothers, Leo and Francis Boylan; and two sisters, Anna Mae Sborz and Isabella Ketner.

Surviving are his nephews John and William Ketner, both of Pottsville, Pa., Patrick Boylan and niece Catherine Walski, both of Brick; along with many other nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Catharine’s RCC, Spring Lake. Interment was at St. Mary’s cemetery, Wilkes Barre, Pa.

Donations may be made in his name to the Pro Life Committee, c/o St. Catharine’s RC Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake NJ 07762.
