Marilyn Estelle
Marilyn Estelle Gorgodian, whose sister lives in Brielle, died on Sunday, Feb. 15 at Claremont Care Center in Point Pleasant.

She was 70 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Ms. Gorgodian lived in Allentown, Pa., before moving to Kutztown, Pa. in 1981.

Ms. Gorgodian received a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Temple University and certification in elementary education from Muhlenberg College in Allentown. She went on to receive her Masters in library science from Kutztown University.

She was a member of Nativity Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a longtime member of the Concord Chamber Singers. She was also a member of the Reading Hiking Club and participated in many walks for charity.

Ms. Gorgodian was a music teacher in the Middletown and Wildwood school districts and an elementary school teacher in Lehigh County, Pa. She was most recently employed by Dunn and Bradstreet, in Bethlehem, Pa., before retiring in 2003.

She was predeceased by her parents Earl and Gladys Stahl.

Ms. Gorgodian is survived by her sister Dorothy Underhill, of Brielle; her three nieces, Janice U. Lasak and her husband Frank, of Cochranville, Pa., Sharon A. Chinery and her husband Richard, of Tuckerton, and Linda S. Underhill, of Manassas, Va.; and five great-nieces and great-nephews, Richard and Lauren Chinery, and Sarah, Johanna and Catherine Lasak.

A Memorial service will be held at the Nativity Lutheran Church, 4004 Tilghman St., Allentown, Pa., on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. Arrangements are through the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nativity Lutheran Church.

M. Evelyn Maloney
M. Evelyn Maloney, of Spring Lake Heights, died on Monday, Feb. 16 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 70 years old.

She resided in Irvington and Avon-by-the-Sea before moving to Fairway Mews in 1985.

Ms. Maloney earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education at Montclair State College. She was employed by the Westfield public school district, where she served as a junior high school guidance counselor, senior high school guidance counselor and department head, director of guidance for all schools in the system and an aide to the superintendent of schools.

In 1984, she retired from the Westfield public schools, and with a colleague, established an educational counseling service called EVTON Associates.

In the past, she served as administrator for the Bay Point Harbor Condominium Association in Point Pleasant. She was actively involved in the Fairway Mews Condominium Association’s work and activities. She was president of the Seaview Condominium Association at Fairway Mews, director on the Community Association Board at Fairway Mews and managed the Fairway Mews Women’s 18 Hole Golf League.

She was predeceased by her parents, Timothy and Catherine Maloney and a sister Marion.

Surviving are a sister, Jean Dobbs, of Florham Park; a nephew, Chris Dobbs, of Conn.; and nieces Patricia Diamond, of Mass., Carol Guerriero, of Madison, and nieces Mary Ellen, Evelyn and Kathleen, of Mass.

She is also survived by her dear friend and companion, Eden B. O’Hare, of Manasquan, his daughter, Kathleen Cassidy, and her husband, Patrick, and their three daughters, all of Howell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan. Interment will follow in St. Catharine cemetery, Sea Girt.

Friends may call tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 pm. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Spring Lake Heights Fire Co., 6th and Atlantic Ave., Spring Lake Heights, 07762.

Richard W. Olmstead, COL USAR Ret.
Brielle resident Richard W. Olmstead, COL USAR Ret., was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who passed away Monday, Feb. 16, at his home.

Mr. Olmstead was a 48 year resident of Brielle whose varied and successful career included employment with RCA, Lynn Pharmacol, a brief stint at dairy farming, Electronics Associates Inc., Smith-Kline Instruments, Wightman Medical and Monmouth Medical Systems, which he owned and operated.

During WWII, he served as a pilot with the 315th Troop Carrier Squadron of the Army Air Corps in the China, Burma, India Theater. His valiant service was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal and the Chinese Air Medal. Following the war, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve and retired at the rank of Colonel (Signal Corps) in 1975. In later years, he received the State of New Jersey Distinguished Service Medal in recognition of his wartime service.

Mr. Olmstead was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Manasquan for over 50 years as a soloist, choir director, youth advisor and deacon. In 1978, he became a lay pastor for the American Baptist Churches, serving congregations in Clifford, Pa., Mt. Bethel, Pa. and Lakewood. He served on the ABSNJ State Council and Professional Ministry Committee and completed two terms as a member of the General Board of the American Baptist Churches USA. Towards the end of his career, he worked tirelessly as a co-founder of the Lay Pastors Institute of New Jersey.

In the 1950s, he was a member of the Manasquan Men’s Chorus, and in the 1970s, he became a lifetime member of the China-Burma-India Hump Pilot’s Association.

Mr. Olmstead is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret [Applegate] and their children: Rev. Richard Olmstead, Mrs. Karen Morris, Ms. Diana Hamilton, Mr. David Olmstead and Mr. Daniel Olmstead. He cherished his family and left a legacy of love to his five children, 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Manasquan. Burial will follow in Atlantic View cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, Feb. 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

Marie L. Harrahill
Marie L. Harrahill, of Wall Township, died on Sunday, Feb. 15 at Waterford Glen in Wall.

She was 86 years old.

Born in New York City, Ms. Harrahill lived most of her life in Rahway before moving to Wall in 1995.

She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1996; a son, Robert Harrahill in 1964; and a daughter, Jean Dobbins in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Eileen Harrahill, of Webster Groves, Mo.; a sister, Elaine Graney, of Wall; two brothers and their wives, Edward and Maureen Graney, of Westfield, and Robert and Patricia Graney, of Belmar; and a son-in-law, David Dobbins.

Friends and relatives will gather at the Reilly Funeral Home, 8th Avenue and D Street, Belmar, at 9 a.m. this morning, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Rose Church. Interment will be at St. Mary’s cemetery, Rahway.

Donations to a hospice of your choice would be appreciated.

Charles Jensen

Point Pleasant resident Charles A. Jensen died Sunday, March 14 in Concord Health Care, Lakewood.

He was 94 years old.

Born in North Plainfield, he lived in the Manasquan, Brick and Point Pleasant area over eighty years

He was a electrician for DeBow Electrical Contractors, Manasquan.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Manasquan and former member of the Manasquan First Aid Squad.

He was predeceased by his wife Edith in 1997.

Surviving are his two sisters, Marian Honeywell, Point Pleasant, Winifred Palm, Brick and several nephews and nieces.

Private services were held at Pable-Evertz Funeral Home.

Robert Simmons

Manasquan resident Robert H. Simmons died Friday, March 12 in his home.

He was 80 years old.

Born in Newark, he resided in Point Pleasant and Brick before moving to Manasquan 53 years ago.

He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Coast Guard in 1942, the Merchant Marine from 1942-45. He was a member of the Army National Guard at Sea Girt from 1952-62. He received the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon and recently received the Distinguished Service Medal.

He was a plant engineer at various facilities, including Lily Tulip, Holmdel, Monmouth Medical Center and Princeton Medical Center. He retired in 1986.

A longtime parishioner of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, where he served many years as an usher. He was a former President of the Holy Name Society and worked on the fund drive to build St. Denis School.

Mr. Simmons worked as a volunteer for Last Stop at Madonna House, the Old Guard of Brick and served on the Newspaper Patrol, gathering newspapers for the proceeds to go to charity.

He enjoyed walking the streets, the bike path, the boardwalk of Manasquan and swimming at the North End beach.

He was predeceased by his parents, Harold M. and Mildred LaPointe Simmons Sandomenico, his brother Roger Simmons and his wife of 52 years Teresa Schleck Simmons who died in 1998.

Surviving are his two sons and daughter-in-laws Robert J and Perla Simmons, Brielle, Thomas and Beth Simmons, Tuscon, Ariz, his six daughters and son-in-laws Carol and Randy Maccanico, Spring Lake Heights, Joanne and Mike Casey, Casa Grande, Ariz, Mary Ellen and John Messina, Boca Raton, Fla, Nancy and Chris Brais, Medfield, Mass, Janet and Mick Darcey, Temple, Ariz, and Lorraine and Craig Andres, Toms River, his brother William Simmons, Tampa, Fla, and 12 grandchildren Randy III, Michael, Marc and Melanie Maccanico, James Edelhauser, Jessica Hamilton, Sandy Khneiger, Jason and Rachal Simmons, Brian & Jackie Andres and Anita Colamaria and four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Simmons memory may be made to Madonna House, Highway 35 & 7 Avenue, Neptune.

Grace Yuka

Spring Lake Heights resident Grace Anselmo Yuka died Sunday, March 14 in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 77 years old.

Born in Moonachie, she lived in West New York and Jersey City before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1952.

She was a homemaker.

She was a communicant of St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake, member of the St. Catharine Catholic Daughters.

She volunteered at both the St. Catharine and Spring Lake Heights Grammar School Libraries’ and was a member of the St. Mark’s Missionary Servants Guild in Sterling.

She was predeceased by her loving husband John S. in 1981.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law James P. and Eileen, Point Pleasant, Joseph G. and Eileen Jardine, Spring Lake Heights, daughters and son-in-laws Joanne S. and David M. Glasser, Wall, Toni Jean and Richard Matson, Neptune, sister-in-law Helen E. Yuka, Spring Lake Heights, ten grandchildren Michelle Jean, James P. Jr., John, Justin, B.J., Joseph Jr., Patrick, Michael, Eric, and Mark, one great granddaughter Selene Grace.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home

Services will be held by O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35, Wall today, Thursday, at 8 A.M. This will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 A.M. at St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake.

Contributions in Mrs. Yuka’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680 North Canton, OH 44720.

Joan Tighe

Point Pleasant Beach resident Joan McKeown Tighe died Friday, March 12 in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 69 years old.

Born and raised in Elizabeth, she moved to Point Pleasant Beach 30 years ago.

She was a legal secretary for seven years for the Carton, Arvanitis, Witt and Barsillio firm, Neptune. She retired eight years ago.

She was a member of St. Denis Church, Manasquan.

Mrs. Tighe was a Graduate of Berkeley Secretary School, South Orange. She was also a Member of Hill Topper Alumni Group from St. Mary’s, Elizabeth.

She was a avid lover of the beach and Islands. She loved to travel to Ireland.

She is survived by her husband James Tighe, her two sons James J. Tighe, Brick, Kevin Tighe, Point Pleasant Beach, her daughter Marie-Ellen Walsh, Belmar, her two brothers Thomas McKeown, VA, Robert McKeown, Ciniminson, her sister Mary Margaret Byrne, Caldwell, and her seven grandchildren Adam James, Brendon, Patrick, Daniel, and Jean-Marie Tighe, Joseph and Caitlin Walsh.

Funeral arrangements were from the Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home.

Mary Norton

Brielle resident Mary Norton died Monday, March 15.

She was 36 years old.

Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, she lived in Brielle for the past 13 years.

She was a Communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan where she taught CCD classes.

She also was a Den Mother to Cub Scout Pack 63, Brielle. She volunteered countless hours with the Brielle Fire Dept. and First Aid. Coached basketball for the Brielle Recreation and helped care for many animals at home.

She is survived by her husband Shawn M. Martin, her daughter Kateri Norton, Brielle her two sons Aaron Cole Martin, Brielle, Jarreth Colin Martin, Brielle, her two brothers James Norton, Ballston Spa, NY and Robert Norton, Elizabeth City, NC, her sister Theresa Theriault, Harrisville, NY and her mother Ruth Norton, Elizabeth City, NC.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.

Services will be held by St. Denis Church, Manasquan today, Thursday, at 11 A.M.
