Edward Hansen

Wall resident Edward Hansen died Monday, June 14 at the Burnst Tavern Rehab and Health Care Center, Brick.

He was 80 years old.

Born in Atlantic City, he lived in Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y. and moved to Wall in 1966.

He was a graduate of Atlantic City High School. He joined the Navy Air Force at the age of 19 and proudly served his county during WW II as a Radioman and Tail Gunner from1942 to 1945. While attending the Chicago Institute of Technology, he married his sweetheart, Frances Carlson on June 16, 1947. They moved to Hicksville, N.Y. where Edward earned his degree from Hofstra University and worked as an electrical engineer for the Airborne Instruments Laboratory. Soon after, he was offered a position at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Pomona and moved his family to Brigantine, where they lived until transferring to Fort Monmouth and moving to Wall, 1996.

He was a longtime Ham Radio Operator and a member of the “Knuckleheads” Ham Club while living in Brigantine. He was especially proud of his Scandinavian heritage and was an active member of the Sons of Norway for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Paula Hansen; his twin brother, Paul; and his younger brother, Henry.

Mr. Hansen is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frances; his son, Richard and daughter-in-law Patricia; his daughter, Joyce Foster and son-in-law, Jeffrey Foster; five grandchildren, Brian, Eric, and Kate Hansen, and Jaime and Jennifer Foster, all residents of wall.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Hansen’s memory may be made to the American Legion Post 346, 21 Gulley Road, Neptune.

Carolyn L. Nash

Manasquan resident Carolyn L. Nash died at Medicenter, Neptune.

At her request, there will be an immediate cremation and no services.

Funeral arrangements were from Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.

Lawrence A. Valpone

Neptune resident Lawrence A. Valpone died Thursday , June 1 in St. Vincent’s Hospital, Manhattan.

He was 80 years old.

Born and raised in the Bronx, he moved to Franklin Twp., 1965 and later to Wall before moving to Neptune.

He was the owner and operator of Val’s Girl, a clothing pattern making company in New York for over 40 years before retiring 8 years ago. After his retirement he was employed at Wall High School as a security officer for the past two years.

He was a Marine Corp Veteran of World War II and a former member of the Asbury Park Elks.

He was predeceased by his wife Emily Cerrella Valpone, 2001.

Mr. Valpone is survived by his children, Tony and Joann Valpone, Sea girt, Valerie and Michael Aufiero, Shrewsbury and Larry. A. Valpone, Jr., Toms River; his brother Peter Valpone, Ocean Twp; sister, Theresa Vodola, West Palm Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Amie Valpone, Jessy Valpone, and Alyson Valpone.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Valpone’s memory may be made to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd. Suite 1010, Rockville, Md., 20852.

Eileen A. Walsh

Neptune resident Eileen A. Walsh died Thursday, July 1 at the King Manor Care Center, Neptune, where she was a resident for the past three years.

She was 72 years old.

Born and raised in Woodhaven, Queens, she moved to Elberon, 1973.

She retired with 32 years service from American Telephone and Telegraph company where she had worked her way up from an overseas telephone operator handling calls from Greece. At the time of her retirement, she was a regional manager for the east coast.

She was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.

She was predeceased by her parents, Anna Leonard and Albet Victor Bretherton; and three sisters, Kathleen Shea, Maureen Lenart and Patricia Koce.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Walsh Pappas, Wall and her sister Diane DiMartini, New Hyde Park, N.Y.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ms. Walsh’s memory may be made to St. Mark’s Catholic Church Renovation Fund, 215 Cresent Pky., Sea Girt, 08750.

Regina Cunninghame

Spring Lake Heights resident Regina A. Kassak Cunninghame died Friday July 2 in her home.

She was 74 years old.

Born in Newark, she lived in Sea Girt before coming to Spring Lake Heights, 1985.

She was a homemaker and served as Manasquan count clerk for many years.

She was a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club, the Manasquan Elks Lodge # 2534 Ladies Auxiliary, the Sea Girt Lighthouse Committee and Associate Member of the Former State Troopers Association.

She was predeceased by her sister Delores Coleman.

Mrs. Cunninghame is survived by her husband, Samuel L. Cunninghame; her daughter, Marianne Cunninghame, Manasquan; her son William D. Pospisil and his wife Janet, Manasquan; her grandchildren, Shayne, Trevor and Dylan Pospisil; her brother Peter Kassak, Tequesta, Fla. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were from the O’Brien Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Cunninghame’s memory may be made to Meridian Hospice Monmouth Shores Corp. Park, 1340 A. Campus Pkwy. Neptune, 07753.

Dorothy Reilly

Former Spring Lake resident Dorothy Frances Schaefer Reilly died on July 3 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla.

She was 88 years old.

Born and raised in Newark, she lived in Spring Lake for 27 years until she and her husband retired to Florida.

She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, John Norman Reilly, Sr. and former Newark Police Detective; two sons, infant John, and Captain John N. Reilly, a pilot who was killed in Vietnam.

Mrs. Reilly is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Georgene and Walter R. Hansen, Jr., Wall, and Ellen and John B. Hall, Spring Lake; six grandchildren and their spouses, Walter R. Hansen, Jr., John Michael and Betsy Hansen, Karen and Michael Graff, Stacie and Brian Stephens, Catherine and Sean Flaherty, and John B. Jr. and Kirsten Hall; eight grand-children and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services are from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35, New Bedford Rd., Wall N.J. on Thursday, July 8 at 8:30 a.m. Mass is at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, at 9:30 a.m. followed by committal at St. Catherine’s cemetery, Sea Girt. Visiting is Wednesday, July 7 from 7 - 9 p.m.

George Hendrickson

Spring Lake Heights resident George w. Hendrickson died on Sunday, July 4 in his home.

He was 80 years old.

Born in Newark, he lived in Spring Lake Heights for 67 years.

Mr. Hendrickson was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II.

He was a Supervising Inspector for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Enforcement Bureau of the New Jersey State Police for 32 years before retiring in 1984. He had also worked as a special police officer for the Spring Lake Police Department.

He was a lifelong member of the Wall United Methodist Church, Spring Lake Heights.

He was formerly a member of P.B.A., Local 104, the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police Association, the Monmouth County and Ocean County Chiefs of Police Association, the Society of Investigators of Greater Newark, the N.J. Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association and was a charter member of B.P.O.E., Lodge 2534, Manasquan.

He was one of the founding fathers of the Spring Lake Heights Little League and served as president, manager, coach and umpire of the Twin-Boro Little League.

He was predeceased by his sister, Blanche Dombroski, and his two brothers, Charles [Mick] and Harry [Bud] Hendrickson.

Mr. Hendrickson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Aline Miller Hendrickson; his son and daughter- in-law, Steve and Carolyn Hendrickson, Apopka, Fla.; his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Patrick Forbes, Spring Lake Heights; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan. Interment will follow in Wall Church cemetery, Spring Lake Heights. Visiting will be Wednesday 2 -4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Hendrickson’s memory may be made to Embracing Hospice, 2101 Highway 34, Suite B, Wall 07719.

Katherine M. Gilligan

Wall resident Katherine M. Gilligan died on Tuesday, July 6 at the St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Long Branch.

She was 88 years old.

Born and raised in Newark, she lived in South Orange while summer in Avon until moving there in 1928. She then resided in Wall for the past 25 years.

She was a bookkeeper at Sterner’s Lumber, Belmar for 25 years before retiring.

She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon and a 1937 graduate of Chestnut Hill College, Pa.

Ms. Gilligan is survived by a niece, Kathleen Gilligan, Sea Girt; brother, Hugh Gilligan, Charlotte, N.C.; and sister Loretta Newth, Livonia, Mich.

Visiting will be on Thursday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35, New Bedford Road, Wall.

The service will begin from the funeral home on Friday 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon. Burial will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Sea Girt.

Donations may be made in her name to the Children of Appalachia, St. Jude’s, or the MS Society.

Brian G. Kmetz

Brielle resident Brian George Kmetz died Sunday, July 4 at his parents’ home in Yardville.

He was 46 years old.

Born in Trenton, he lived in Yardville and Brick before moving to Brielle in 1992.

He served on the Trenton Rescue Squad and was a security guard at Quakerbridge Mall, Lawrenceville, before becoming a patrolman with the Borough of Allentown in 1978. He served as a police officer at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft, for one year before becoming a police officer with the New Jersey Institute of Technology Police Department, Newark, in 1988. He was promoted to sergeant after receiving numerous commendations and awards in the line of duty.

He served as president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No 93, Newark, and vice-president of the Superior Officer’s Association for the NJIT Police Department. He r etired in 1996 and became a crossing guard with the Brielle Police Department.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan.

Mr. Kmetz is survived by his wife, Susan Hardifer Kmetz; his son, Kevin Kmetz; his two daughters, Shannon and Allison Kmetz, al Brielle; his parents, George and Dorothy Kmetz, Yardville; his sister, Beverly Kmetz, Yardville; many aunts, uncles and cousins; one brother-in-law and sister in law, Todd and Lisa Hardifer; one nice and two nephews, Lindsey, Todd and Alec Hardifer, Toms River.

Visitation will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. on Friday, Juy 9, at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 and New Bedford Road, Wall, and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, followed by interment in Greenwood cemetery, Brielle.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hartmann Funeral Home, Mercerville.

A memorial fund has been established for Mr. Kmetz’s children. Contributions may be given to The Kmetz Scholarship Fund in care of Mrs. Debbie Crisanti, 632 Spruce Place, Brielle, 08730.

Henry M. McArdle

Belmar resident Henry McArdle died Tuesday, July 6 in his home.

He was 78 years old.

Born in Livingston, he moved to Belmar in 1940.

He was a member of Engineers Local 825, Newark, where he worked as an operating Engineer retiring in 1993.

After moving to Belmar, he was a lifeguard, member of the First Aid Squad, and a police officer for the Boro of Belmar.

He was a communicant of the Church of St. Rose.

He was a Navy Veteran of World War II.

Mr. McArdle is survived by his wife, Mary “Sissy” Gepp McArdle; one son, Alan McArdle, Jensen Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Casey, Lauren and Sean; two brothers-in-law, Stephen J. and Vincent Gepp.

Visiting is Thursday 5 - 8 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 8th Avenue and D St., Belmar. Mass of Christian Burial is Friday, 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Rose, Belmar. Interment is at St. Catharine’s cemetery.

Donations to St. Rose Grammar School Scholarship Fund would be appreciated.
