Rev. Harold Ridley, S.J.

Baltimore, Md. resident the Reverend Harold Ridley, S.J., whose mother lives in Manasquan, died suddenly of natural causes Tuesday, Jan. 18 in his home.

He was 65 years old.

As president of Loyola College in Maryland for the past decade, Fr. Riley led the Baltimore Jesuit university through a period of unprecedented growth and achievement.

Fr. Ridley—who went by his boyhood nickname “Hap”—began his tenure as Loyola’s 23rd president on July 1, 1994, and resolutely guided the college toward his goal of establishing Loyola as a Jesuit Catholic university of national standing. He accomplished this through careful strategic planning and dramatic gains in virtually every area of the university’s operations.

Born June 20, 1939, in Jersey City, Fr. Ridley was educated at Fordham University, Woodstock College and the Union Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. in English literature from New York University. For more than 20 years, Fr. Ridley taught English at Le Moyne College, a Jesuit institution in Syracuse, NY, where he also chaired the English Department and served as the college’s Chief Academic Officer.

He entered the Society of Jesus in 1956 and was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood in 1969. His early assignments included teaching Latin and English at Regis High School in New York, NY, from 1963-66 and serving as an adjunct instructor of humanities at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1967-68.

At the time of his death, Fr. Ridley served on the Boards of the College of the Holy Cross, Crown Central Petroleum and The Institute for Christian & Jewish Studies. In 2003, he was appointed to the Maryland Higher Education Commission’s Blue-ribbon Planning Committee by Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich. Since 1997, he was co-chair of the Greater Baltimore Committee Public Outreach Committee on Regionalism.

He had also served as a trustee of Fordham University, St. Peter’s College, The University of Scranton and Loyola Blakefield and on the Board of Directors of the American Council on Education [1998], and the NCAA President’s Commission [1996-97].

Loyola’s growth was fueled by his passion for strategic planning, which since 1994 included the successful implementation of Magis from 1995-2000. More recently, he guided Loyola’s new, historic $80 million capital campaign past the $56 million mark, and was overseeing the implementation of the college’s new strategic plan “Great Resolves, Great Desires” which seeks to secure Loyola’s place among the top Catholic universities in the United States.

A familiar and popular figure among Loyola’s students, Fr. Ridley was an avid sports fan and a fixture at lacrosse and basketball games on campus. He also was active in his priestly ministry, serving as a regular presider and homilist at Masses in the Loyola Alumni Memorial Chapel, at Stella Maris and at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart in Mount Washington.

He was predeceased by his father, Harold E. Ridley.

Fr. Ridley is survived by his mother, Doris [nee Corcoran] Ridley, Manasquan; his sister, Sister Judith Ridley, S.S.J., Philadelphia; his brother and sister-in-law, John and Althea Ridley, Bernardsville; close friend of the family, Sister Margaret Fleming, S.S.J., and nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Jennifer, John J., David, William and Christopher.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Fr. Ridley’s memory to Loyola College of Maryland, 4501 North Charles St., Baltimore, MD, 21210.
