Henry de Friedberg

Spring Lake resident Henry de Friedberg died Sunday, Jan.23 in Jersey Shore University Hospital, Neptune.

He was 91 years old.

Born in Poland on Jan. 3, 1914, Mr. de Friedberg was a longtime resident of Spring Lake. He was a graduate of the Polish Naval Academy in Gdyia, Poland.

Mr. de Friedberg was a professional sea captain and a reserve artillery officer, actively taking part in World War II in its entirety for the Allied cause. He worked for the Gdyia America Line and The War Shipping Administration transporting troop and ammunition in Atlantic convoys supplying strategic ports crucial for victory for the Allies. He was torpedoed on the SS Paderewski and awarded several medals for valor.

In 1946, acting on orders from the exiled Polish government in London to dock Polish ships in their nearest port, Capt. de Friedberg found himself in New York City which was his nearest port. There he sailed for the McCormack Lines for several years.

As a civilian, he worked as a journalist for the Polish Daily Morning News, New York. Later, he became a sales representative for F&A Distributing Co. in New Jersey for 25 years.

He was the founder and the president of the Polish Naval Officers of America, a member of the Syndicate of Polish Journalists in America and numerous philanthropic organizations.

Mr. de Friedberg was a resident of Spring Lake for over 45 years and a member of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake.

Mr. de Friedberg is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Stasia; a loving daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Peter and Dana Mencel, Spring Lake, and beloved grandchildren, Aleksandra and Charles Mencel.

A funeral service will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Visitation is Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. only. Burial will be in Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine cemetery, 654 Ferry Rd., Doylestown, Pa.

Norman F. Mitschele Sr.

Spring Lake resident Norman F. Mitschele Sr., formerly of Livingston, died Monday, Jan. 24 in the Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick Township.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Orange, Mr. Mitschele lived in Livingston, summering in Spring Lake before moving there permanently five years ago.

Mr. Mitschele was a contractor and owner of Mitschele Contractors, Livingston. He served as a firefighter with the Livingston Volunteer Fire Department for 44 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Livingston VFW Post 2856.

Mr. Mitschele was the proud owner of Spooky III, his boat, and greatly enjoyed fishing and spending time on the open seas.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Mitschele, and his sister, Irene Rowe.

Mr. Mitschele is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bernice Lynch Mitschele; son, Norman F. Mitschele Jr.; daughters, Eileen Simmons, Karen Mitschele, Patricia Simpson, Lorraine Scapicchio, and granddaughters, Dawn Marie and Lynn Patricia Scapicchio. He also leaves a brother, Ralph Mitschele.

Funeral arrangements will be from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, and will be announced later.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Livingston Fire Department, 62 South Livingston Ave., Livingston, 07039 would be appreciated.

Lillian Amelia Bitter

Wall Township resident Lillian Amelia Bitter died Monday, Jan. 24 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Bitter and her husband, William, were the owners and operators of Bill Bitter Wholesale Florist, Wall, from 1949 until retirement in 1976. The business has continued to be operated by their son, Bill. She was born in and was a lifelong resident of Glendola section of Wall. She was a hardworking woman whose family always came first. She enjoyed travel with her husband and loved music and flowers her entire life.

Mrs. Bitter is survived by her husband of 69 years, William, and a son, William, all of Wall.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with a religious service at 8 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.

Steven Mark Story

Sea Girt resident Steven Mark Story, also of Forked River, died Monday, Jan. 24 in his home after a lengthy and difficult struggle with brain cancer surrounded by his loving family.

He was 56 years old.

Born in Floral Park, New York and raised in Old Tappan, New York, Mr. Story was a longtime resident of the Jersey Shore. He worked as a sales manager in the auto industry at several local dealerships.

Mr. Story was a wonderful husband who was devoted to his family. He was avid sailor who enjoyed all types of water related activities.

He was predeceased by his father, Edwin Story.

Mr. Story is survived by his wife of 20 years, Gail Ditri Story; daughter, Heather Story Falco; sons, Jonathan Paul Story, and Taylor Ross Story; granddaughter, Donelle Falco; mother, Virginia Story; sisters, Pamela Bliss and Allyson Graesser; brothers, Peter Story and Scott Story, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South Street, Manasquan. A gathering will follow the service at the funeral home until 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made in his honor to the Musella Foundation for Brain Tumor Research, 1100 Peninsula Blvd., Hewlett, New York, 11557.

Anna Mary Carhart Barth

Brick Township resident Anna Mary Carhart Barth, formerly of Sea Girt, died Monday, Jan.24 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Barth lived in Sea Girt before coming to Brick in 1969. Mrs. Barth was the eldest of her nine siblings, all of whom predeceased her. She was deeply devoted to her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Barth, in 1985.

Mrs. Barth is survived by her sons, Charles R. Barth III, and Robert C. Barth; daughters, Beryl Pedersen and Margaret LaSalle; grandchildren, Charles R. IV, Paige A. and Barrett Barth, Joseph L. Whalen Jr., Wendy A. Kicak, Melissa A. Fitzpatrick and Christopher Barth, and great-grandchildren, Kurt, Allison, Rachel, Cassie, John, Haleigh, Lilah and Samantha.

Relatives and friends may call at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Frank P. ‘Skip’ Campion

Wall Township resident Frank P. “Skip” Campion died Tuesday, Jan. 25 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township, after a brief but intense battle with cancer.

He was 67 years old.

Born in the Newark, Mr. Campion lived most of his life at the Jersey Shore. He is a graduate of St. Rose Grammar School, Belmar, St. Charles Seminary in Maryland, and St. Peter’s College, Jersey City.

He served as a U.S. Army officer stationed in Europe from 1959-1962 and served in the NJ National Guard from 1962-1969.

Mr. Campion was the founder and CEO of Connelly-Campion-Wright Insurance Agency in Belmar. He was awarded many honors throughout his career including: “Insurance Person of the Year Award” and “Professional Insurance Agent of the Year.” He also served as President of the Professional Insurance Agents [PIA] of New Jersey. Recently, he led the formation of Proformance Insurance Company in Freehold. He was very proud of his profession and his employees.

In addition to his family, flying and golf were his passions. He was past President of Spring Lake Golf Club and was an active member of the Indigo Run Golf Club in Hilton Head Island, SC.

Mr. Campion will be greatly missed by his wife of almost 40 years, Rosanne Campion, and their children and grandchildren; Kacy and Gary Renna, Wall, and their daughters Alison and Julia; Karen and Tom Stackhouse, Wall, and their children Mollie and T.J.; Beth and Morgan McManus, Brielle, and their son, Cameron.

Visiting will be on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, located at 8th Avenue and D Street in Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 10am at St. Rose’s Church, Belmar. Interment will immediately follow at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.

Michael J. Pisar

Belmar resident Michael J. Pisar died Tuesday, Jan. 11 in Imperial Care Center, Neptune.

He was 93 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Pisar lived in Belmar for the last 30 years and summered in Boca Raton.

Mr. Pisar was an engineer for Engelhard Industries in Harrison for 35 years, before retiring in 1975.

He was a very loving father and best friend to his family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lucille Pisar, in 1986.

He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis M. Pisar, Belmar, and Nancy and her husband, Peter Cuttita, New York City; three grandchildren, Nancy Marie Bessone, and Michael and Francis Cuttita, and two great-grandchildren, Isabelle and Nicholas Bessone.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Mary O’Brien Rible

Neptune resident Mary O’ Brien Rible, formerly of Belmar, died Wednesday, Jan. 12 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a short illness.

Born in Fords, Mrs. Rible is the daughter of the late James and Anna Livak.

Mrs. Rible was a lifelong member of the Degree of Pocahontas and was a past Great Pocahontas of the State of New Jersey. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the O’Brien-Major VFW Post 2639 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 346, both in Neptune. She also assisted her husband with his locksmith business in Belmar.

Her loving husband, Frederick J. Rible, died Wednesday, Jan. 12 in their home in Neptune. Her first husband, Michael O’Brien, died in December 1979. Her son-in-law, William “Bill” Armstrong, died in the line of duty in July 1999. She is also predeceased by two sisters and and two brothers.

Mrs. Rible is survived by a daughter, Patricia Armstrong, Granville, Ohio; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Karen O’Brien, Neptune City, and James O’Brien, Neptune; four step-children, Patricia Swan, John Rible and his wife, Susan, Frederick J. Jr. Rible and his wife, Shirley, and Diana Havens; six sisters; three brothers; 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Frederick J. Rible

Neptune resident Frederick J. Rible, formerly of Belmar, died Wednesday, Jan. 12 in his home.

He was 77 years old.

Born in Belmar, Mr. Rible lived there for most of his life. He owned and operated Rible’s Locksmith in Sea Girt and Belmar from 1963 to 1999.

Mr. Rible had life memberships with the VFW, the Belmar Union Fire Company and the New Jersey Master Locksmith Association, where he also served as president.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Livak O’Brien Rible, who died Wednesday, Jan. 12 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Mr. Rible was predeceased by his father, John A. Rible, and three brothers, John A. Rible, Franklyn J. Rible and Richard A. Rible.

He is survived by his mother, Eleanor Nobrega; four children, Patricia Swan, Frederick J. Rible Jr., John A. Rible, and Diana Havens; three step-children, Michael and his wife, Karen O’Brien, and James O’Brien; siblings, Carol Hruby, Eugene Jarvis Jr., Elaine Klein, Dennis Jarvis, Joan Hurley, Patricia Johnson, and Ellie Calhoun; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations to Meridian Hospice, 1340 A Campus Drive, Neptune, or the Belmar First Aid or Union Fire Co., Belmar, would be appreciated.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Joseph Justinic

Brielle resident Joseph Justinic died Wednesday, Jan.12 in his home.

He was 82 years old.

Mr. Justinic was born in Gabonjin on the island of Krk in Croatia. He was a graduate of the University of Zagreb, Croatia, Law School. He fled from Communist Yugoslavia after World War II, traveling to Italy and then Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Mr. Justinic owned and operated a home construction company and a grocery store in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada for 13 years, before moving to Hoboken. He was employed by Economics Laboratory in Avenel from 1966 until his retirement in 1984. In 1969, Mr. Justinic and his family moved to Brielle where he owned and operated Captain Piercey’s Rooms and Efficiency Apartments, Inc. to present day.

Mr. Justinic was an avid reader and language scholar, fluent in six languages. He appreciated the arts and philosophy and enjoyed oil painting and music. When he was 70 years old, he designed and built his own home in Brielle. He designed, funded and built two religious monuments in Croatia: a marble cross in Gabonjin and a cross and stations of the cross in Rasopasno, on the island of Krk, where his wife was born.

Mr. Justinic was a devout Roman Catholic and attended daily mass. He was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan, for 35 years.

He was predeceased by his sister, Bosiljka Markovic.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Nada Justinic; son, Gordon Justin, Brielle; daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and John O. Fox, Marlton; sister, Anica Coric, and three grandchildren, Jessica, Justin, and John Fox.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Visiting Nurses Association of Central Jersey Hospice, 1100 Wayside Rd., Tinton Falls, 07712.

Joseph Cotov

Wall Township resident Joseph Cotov died Wednesday, Jan. 12 in his home.

He was 78 years old.

Born in Wall, Mr. Cotov lived in Spring Lake Heights before moving back to Wall. He was co-owner and manager of Manich Mobile Park in Wall Township.

For more than 40 years, he was a tractor trailer truck driver for Jersey Coast Freight Lines, Neptune, before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 701.

Mr. Cotov was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Mary, and one sister, Ann Cotov.

He is survived by a son, Thomas Joseph Cotov, Esq., East Brunswick; a daughter, Judith Ann Cotov, M.D., Sea Girt; a sister, Elizabeth Cotov, Wall; a brother, John Cotov, Brielle, and three grandchildren, Danica, Matthew and Jacob Cotov.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name to the National Shrine of Saint Jude, Claretian Missionaries, 205 West Monroe St., Chicago, IL, 60606, would be appreciated.
