Mildred Lord Edmond

Wall Township resident Mildred Lord Edmond died Friday, Jan. 14 in her home.

She was 84 years old.

Raised in Kearney, Mrs. Edmond spent her early years in Bloomfield with the exception of a two year period during World War II in which she and her late husband, Charles Edmond, worked for the Navy yard in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Mrs. Edmond moved to Sea Girt in 1972, where she was an active member of the Sea Girt Woman’s Club and the Sea Girt Fire Auxiliary and a faithful congregant of St. Uriel the Archangel Church, Sea Girt. In addition, she donated her time to the James Ackerman Foundation at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, and a volunteer at the Sea Girt Lighthouse.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles, of 53 years in 1994.

Mrs. Edmond is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ann and Don Risley, Byram Township, and Carol and Mark Saker, Wall; four granddaughters, Julie Saker, Washington, D.C., Kristen Risley Kline, Hoboken, Alison Saker, New York City, and Laurie Risley, Chatham, and her much-loved dog, Cassie.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Uriel’s Church, Third Avenue and Philadelphia Boulevard, Sea Girt, 08750, or to the Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizen’s Committee, P.O. Box 83, Sea Girt, 08750.

Arthur K. ‘Artie’

Pompano Beach, Fla. resident Arthur K. “Artie” Rutgersen, formerly of Wall Township, died Friday, Jan. 7 in his home.

He was 74 years old.

Born and raised in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, Mr. Rutgersen moved to the Jersey Shore in 1969 and retired to Florida in 1992.

He was a union ironworker before starting his own elevator contracting business. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Korean War. He enjoyed cooking, reading, boating and just looking at his palm tree and water view. He will be sadly missed by those who have so many fond memories of him for his friendship, thoughtfulness and sense of humor. He touched the hearts of many and will be especially missed by his daughter, Carolyn. He was a wonderful father and friend.

He was predeceased by his parents, Oleif and Karl Rutgersen; an infant son, Richard, in 1964, and his ex-wife and friend, Marilyn Rutgersen, in 2001.

Mr. Rutgersen is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Frank Bertucci, Wall; three sons, James, of Key Largo, Fla., and Kenneth and Paul, of Queens, N.Y., and many lifelong friends.

A memorial service will be offered at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, on Friday at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends may call on Friday from 11 a.m. until service time.

Frank Chirico Sr.

West Palm Beach resident Frank Chirico Sr. died Sunday, Jan. 2.

He was 80 years old.

Born in Paterson, Mr. Chirico lived in Totowa and Wantage, before moving to West Palm Beach.

Mr. Chirico, an entrepreneur, owned several businesses. A World War II Army veteran, he was a member of the American Legion Post 213, Wantage. He was a former parishioner of St. James Church, Totowa and a parishioner of St. Ignatius Cathedral, Palm Beach Gardens.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Ann Nowicki.

Mr. Chirico is survived by five sons, Frank Jr., Totowa, Paul, of Phoenix, Thomas, of Milford, Pa., David, of North Palm, Fla. and John, of Wantage; two daughters, Elaine Maitland, Brick Township and Nancy Vander Berg, Wantage, and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Gaita Memorial Home, Little Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Assoc., Northern Regional Chapter, 101 Eisenhower Parkway, Roseland, 07068, would be appreciated.

James ‘Duke’ Reilly

Avon-by-the-Sea resident James “Duke” Reilly died Saturday, Jan. 15 in his home.

He was 62 years old.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Mr. Reilly moved to Avon in 1971. He is a graduate of St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School and Manhattan College in the Bronx.

Mr. Reilly worked for the New Jersey Department of the Treasury. Prior to this, he worked in the trucking industry as a salesman for Mack Trucks. He led the nation in sales for fours year in a row. Mr. Reilly was the co-owner with his wife, Mary, of the Irish Centre, Spring Lake, for 26 years.

He was a member of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore, Belmar, the St. Patrick’s Day Committee, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Monmouth County, and a member of the Sylvan Lake Commission. Mr. Reilly was also the Democratic chairman of Avon-by-the-Sea, a New Jersey Democratic State Committeeman, and the chairman of the Handball Club of the Atlantic Club, Manasquan.

Mr. Reilly completed marathons in Dublin, Ireland, Venice, Italy, and New York City. He was the unofficial mayor of the Avon, Belmar and Spring Lake boardwalks.

He was predeceased by his parents, James and Mary Reilly, and a brother, Thomas.

Mr. Reilly is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Foley Reilly; a son, James M., Avon; two daughters, Becky, of Brooklyn, and Mary, Avon; a brother, Francis and his wife, Agnes, Bayonet Point, Fla.; a sister, Mary, of Bronxville, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Sharon, Eastchester, N.Y., and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting will be on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, located at 8th Avenue and D Street in Belmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, Avon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Avon First Aid would be appreciated.

Donald B. ‘Donny’ Daughton

Wall Township resident Donald B. “Donny” Daughton died Saturday, Jan. 15 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

He was 66 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Daughton lived most of his life in Belmar, moving to Wall 14 years ago.

Mr. Daughton was a surveyor for the Operating Engineers Local 825, Little Falls. He retired in 1993. Prior to this, he was a computer programmer with JCP&L. He also worked as a bartender for Jack’s and Jerry Lynch’s, both in Belmar.

He was a member of the National Guard Reserve and a former member of the Friendly Sons of Shillelagh at the Jersey Shore. He was also a former special police officer in Belmar. He was known for his beautiful singing voice as the singing bartender.

Mr. Daughton was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Dorothy Nulty Daughton; a brother, Douglass Daughton, and a sister, Diane Daughton.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Barbara Reilly Daughton; two sons, Patrick, Wall Township, and Kevin and his wife, Leigh, of Belmar; three daughters, Diane and her husband, Martin Rafferty, Keyport, Kelly and her husband, Allan Sherman, Wall, and Erin and her husband, James Rice, Wall, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Donations in Mr. Daughton’s memory to the Ocean Medical Center Foundation, 425 Jack Martin Blvd., Brick, 08723, would be appreciated.

Shirley Newman Miller

Manasquan resident Shirley Newman Miller died peacefully Monday, Jan. 17 in Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, New Brunswick.

She was 75 years old.

Mrs. Miller was a retired bookkeeper for Shehadi Rug Company. Her favorite pastime was reading and sitting outside her home on Stockton Lake.

Mrs. Miller was predeceased by her husband, Ken Miller.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Lori Schneider; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Tom Abel; a grandson and his wife, Will and Shere Schneider; grandchildren, Steven and Brian Schneider and Kristin, Heidi and Cara Abel, and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Matthew and Caleb Schneider.

Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. A service of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. tonight during the visiting hours. Family and friends will gather on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home to go to Atlantic View cemetery where graveside committal prayers will be offered at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to America’s Keswick, 601 Route 530, Whiting, 08759.

Marie J. Ciccone

Spring Lake Heights resident Marie J. Ciccone died Sunday, Jan. 16 in her home.

She was 79 years old.

Miss Ciccone was born in Newark and lived in Bloomfield and Silver Ridge Park in Toms River, before recently moving to Spring Lake Heights.

She retired as an assistant manager of Mid Atlantic Bank in West Orange. Prior to this, she worked on the payroll department of the Newark Board of Education.

Miss Ciccone was a communicant of St. Maximilian Church, Toms River, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America at the church. She was also a member of the St. Rose Prime Timers in Belmar and was an extensive traveller.

She was predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Columbia Stefanelli Ciccone, and a brother-in-law, Gerald Casale, in 1988.

Miss Ciccone is survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Florence Casale, Avon, Colleen and Gabriel Agresti, Belmar, and Frances and George Katzenberger, Oceanport; nieces and nephews, Cathy and Frank Angelastro, Dr. James and Pam Agresti, Margaret and Dr. Henry Falk, Dr. Gerald and Toni Casale, Dr. George Katzenberger and Shannon Kelly, Lisa and Charles Carey, Carol Katzenberger, and Nicholas and Gretchen Katzenberger, and 14 great nieces and nephews.

The family will gather at the Reilly Funeral Home, located on Eighth Avenue and D Street in Belmar, today at 10:30 a.m. followed by an 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Elizabeth Church, Avon. Entombment is at St. Catharines cemetery, Wall Township.

Donations to the Nicholas and Columbia Ciccone Scholarship Fund, Alumni Office, Montclair State University, 1 Normal Ave., Montclair, 07043, would be appreciated.

Lawrence Joseph Maloney

Brick Township resident Lawrence Joseph Maloney, formerly of Wall Township, died Sunday, Jan. 16 in his home surrounded by his family.

He was 71 years old.

Born in Newark, he lived in Wall before moving to Brick in 1997. Mr. Maloney was a veteran of both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years, primarily as a B-45 and B-52 tail gunner, until his honorable discharge in 1972. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Korean and United Nations Silver Medals.

Upon retirement from active service, he was employed with Honeywell Electronics and the United States Postal Service for 16 years, where he retired as a supervisor. Later, he worked for the Monmouth County Board of Social Services for six years. He was a parishioner of St. Dominic’s Church, Brick.

Mr. Maloney was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Mary Maloney; a brother, Peter, and a sister, Mary.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rosaleen Donoghue Maloney; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph L. and Stacey, Howell; two daughters, Mary M. Maloney and Noreen Spinapont and her husband, John, all of Point Pleasant; a brother, Thomas, of Damascus, Pa., and six grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, John, Joseph, Megan and Kaitlyn.

Friends may call today from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd. at Hwy. 70 in Brick. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Dominic’s Church, Brick. Burial will follow at the New Jersey Veteran’s cemetery in Arneytown.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made in his honor to the New Jersey Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, P.O. Box 5273, Kendall Park, 08824.

Francis William Gallagher

Lake Como resident Francis William Gallagher died Monday, Jan. 17 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 82 years old.

Mr. Gallagher was born in Jersey City, where he lived, before moving to Lake Como.

He was a postman for the Jersey City Post Office for 25 years, retiring in 1985.

Mr. Gallagher was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and World War II. During the Korean War, he served on the USS Cotton. In World War II, he served on the USS Concord, the ship that fired the last shot of the war. He was active in the ship reunions. He was also a communicant of the Church of St. Rose, Belmar.

Mr. Gallagher was predeceased by his wife, Madelyn Johnson, in 1985.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Brian Francis and Barbara Gallagher, Wall Township; a daughter and her husband, Maureen Gallagher-Reddington and Raymond P. Reddington, Caldwell; a brother, Walter Gallagher, Jersey City, and four grandchildren, Allison, Katherine and Bridget Reddington, and Rachel Gallagher.

Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, located on Eight Avenue and D Street in Belmar. The family will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, Belmar. Interment will be at the Holy Cross cemetery, North Arlington.

Donations to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Alice Stroh Sanborne

Galloway resident Alice Stroh Sanborne, formerly of Spring Lake, died Tuesday, Dec. 14.

She was 81 years old.

Born on Jan. 28, 1923 in Grosse Pointe, Mich., Mrs. Sanborne was the daughter of Bernhard and Alice Kratzet Stroh III, and great-granddaughter of Bernard Stroh, founder of Stroh Brewery in Detroit, Mich.

Mrs. Sanborne graduated from Ogontz Junior College in Philadelphia in 1942.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Paul F. Sanborne Jr. They lived for 46 years in Spring Lake where they operated Sanborne’s Gift Shop. After moving to Galloway in 2002, Mrs. Sanborne devoted her time to her family.

She is survived by her two sons, Peter and his wife, Wendy, Scottsdale Ariz., and Stephen and his wife, Colleen, Northfield; daughter, Joy Kaplan and her fiance, Art Hood, Egg Harbor Township; sister Joanne Sibley, Grosse Pointe; brother, Bernard Stroh IV and his wife, Mary Lee, Flint, Mich., and grandchildren, Jennifer Kaplan and Pamela Zuker, Joseph Kaplan, and Garrett, Christopher and Adam Sanborne. Also surviving are four nieces and nephews and her good friend and caregiver, Luda Lanovenko.

Funeral arrangements were from the Jeffries and Keates Funeral Home, Northfield.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1851 Old Cuthbert Road, Cherry Hill, 08034.
