Newell H. “Bunky” Golden Jr.

Sea Girt resident Newell H. “Bunky” Golden Jr. found peace from Alzheimer’s disease when he died Tuesday, Jan. 4 in Sunnyside Manor, Wall Township.

He was 74 years old.

Mr. Golden attended Manasquan schools and graduated from Bordentown Military Institute. He attended Lafayette College and graduated from Drexel University. He served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant in Ordinance on duty in Alaska during the Korean War. After 35 years Mr. Golden retired from DeLaval in Trenton as a senior project engineer. He was a member of the Trenton Engineers Club and a member and past president of Trenton Toast Masters.

Mr. Golden was a member, Sunday school teacher, vestryman and former warden of St. Paul’s Church, Levitown, Pa. After retiring to his hometown of Sea Girt, he served as an alternate member of the Sea Girt Planning Board. As a member of St. Uriel’s, he served as an usher. Most of all Mr. Golden enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen Edmonds Golden; son and daughter-in-law, Scott Newell and Margaret Golden, Brick Township; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine M. and Dana G. Clapp, Point Pleasant, and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Clapp, Point Pleasant.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, Third and Philadelphia avenues, Sea Girt, 08750.

Henry E. Smith

Wall Township resident Henry E. Smith died Tuesday, Jan. 4 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Portsmouth, Va., Mr. Smith lived in Neptune and moved to Belmar in 1964, where he resided until moving to Wall eleven years ago.

Mr. Smith was a communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish, Spring Lake. He had been employed as a production engineer at Electronics Associates, West Long Branch, for 17 years, and then he went to work as an electrical technician for the New Jersey State Department of Transportation for 24 years, retiring in 1990. He was an U.S. Army veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 55 years, Francis Sharin Smith; two sons and their wives, Michael and Laurie Smith, Pittsford, Vt., and Steven R. and Karen Smith, Lacombe, La., and a sister, Florence Roeder, Sandy, Utah. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kim and Steve Trevisan, Hoboken, Karel and Cliff Aker, Belmar, and Michael J. and Sean M. Smith, Lacombe, La., and four great-grandchildren, Kyle and Justin Aker and Vanessa and Sylvia Trevisan.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Catharine’s Restoration Fund, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake, 07762.

G. Norman Benedict

Point Pleasant resident G. Norman Benedict, formerly of Barnegat Lane, Mantoloking, died Thursday, Jan. 6 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 96 years old.

Born in Brockport, N.Y., Mr. Benedict lived in Chatham for 39 years and Mantoloking for 33 years. He was a 1929 graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa.

Mr. Benedict was employed as a human resource manager for 33 years with Western Electric in New York City, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lois Ross Benedict, in 1997.

He is survived by his son, Gary Norman Benedict, Valley, Wash.; daughter, Suzanne “Muffin” Benedict, Winlaw, British Columbia, Canada; brother, Frederick Chapman Benedict, Turlock, Calif., and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to “Save Barnegat Bay” 906-B Grand Central Ave., Lavallette, 08735.

Edward L. Bergen

Spring Lake Heights resident Edward L. Bergen died on Friday, Jan. 7 in Sea Brook Village in Tinton Falls.

He was 82 years old.

Born and raised in Jersey City, Mr. Bergen live in Neptune City before moving to Spring Lake Heights ten years ago.

Mr. Bergen was a Jersey City Fire Captain and with the Jersey City Fire Department Engine 19 for many years, before retiring in 1980. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He was stationed on the USS Monsson which was sunk by Japanese torpedoes on Nov. 13, 1942. He was one of 80 survivors.

Mr. Bergen was a member of the American Legion Post 178, Farmingdale, and a member of the New Jersey State Retired Police and Fireman’s Association.

Mr. Bergen was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen P., in 1999 and his brother, William Bergen.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Robert Stroebel, Middletown; a sister, Claire Brady, Neptune City, and two grandsons, Timothy and Kevin Stroebel.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Margaret A. Olmstead

Brielle resident Margaret A. Olmstead passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5 in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York.

She was 81 years old.

Born on April 29, 1923 in Ann May Hospital, Spring Lake, Mrs. Olmstead was the daughter of Leroy and Genevieve Houghton Applegate.

Mrs. Olmstead was educated at Manasquan Elementary School and High School. She continued her education at Mississippi State College for Women before beginning her lifelong journey in 1942 with her beloved husband, the late Richard W. Olmstead. After raising her five children, she returned to Brookdale Community College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing and practiced as a private duty nurse.

Mrs. Olmstead was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Manasquan, where he dedication and devotion led her to serve in a variety of positions including Sunday school teacher, deaconess, and as a member of the choir, the Junior Women’s Guild and the American Baptist Women. Mrs. Olmstead’s love and caring for others was a blessing to all who knew and loved her, and she will be missed beyond measure.

Mrs. Olmstead is survived by her five children, the Rev. Dick Olmstead, Syracuse, N.Y., Karen Morris, Brielle, Diana Hamilton, Brielle, David Olmstead, Brielle, and Daniel Olmstead, York, Pa.; three brothers, Leroy, Ted and Frank Applegate; 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. She will be remembered with love in a memorial service on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Manasquan First Baptist Church, 47 South St., Manasquan. Parking for both facilities is in the rear.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please consider a donation to the Richard and Margaret Olmstead Fund at the First Baptist Church of Manasquan.

Theresa Baumgartner

Whiting resident Theresa Baumgartner, whose sister lives in Sea Girt, died Thursday, Jan. 6 in the Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 94 years old.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Baumgartner lived in Union City for many years, before moving to Crestwood Village in Whiting 30 years ago. It was there that Mrs. Baumgartner shared many good friends that she played cards, watched the Mets play baseball and enjoyed many lunches with.

Mrs. Baumgartner was predeceased by her husband, Frederick.

She is survived by her sisters, Frances Dooley, Sea Girt, and Rose Grimm, Crestwood Village, Whiting; three nephews, Lawrence Dooley and his wife, Inger, Point Pleasant Beach, Dr. James Dooley and his wife, Gayle, Manasquan, and the Rev. Louis Micca, Maryland, and two nieces, Louise Terisi and her husband, Richard, Fairlawn, and Marcia Healy, New Jersey. She also leaves grand nieces and nephews, Kevin, Stephanie, and Christopher Dooley, and Ariana Terisi.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

George John Molinelli

Spring Lake resident George John Molinelli died Saturday, Jan. 8 in the Sunrise Assisted Living facility in Wall Township.

He was 91 years old.

Born in New York City, Mr. Molinelli lived in Staten Island and Harrison and summered in Spring Lake until moving there permanently in 1980.

Mr. Molinelli was a plant manager for 30 years at the Gulf Oil Corporation in Staten Island before retiring in 1971. He was a U.S. Army veteran during World War II serving from 1942 to 1946.

He was a graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island where he lettered in track and cross country and was the 1930 junior singles champion in tennis. He was a member of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, where he was an usher at the 5 p.m. Mass and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of Holy Cross Church in Harrison where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a lecture. Mr. Molinelli was a volunteer at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and also worked at the Spring Meadow Golf Course in Farmingdale.

At the golf course he was a starter and in charge of the driving range. Mr. Molinelli was a great golfer and loved the sport and shared his love and enthusiasm for the sport with all he met. His career included many senior titles and four “holes in one.” During his retirement no sport brought him more delight and pleasure than the game of golf, and he was always willing to give a quick lesson to a novice golfer.

Mr. Molinelli was predeceased by his wife, Marion O’Neill Molinelli, in 1990.

He is survived by his three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Richard Hinson, Houston, Texas, Honey Molinelli and Thomas Burrell, Spring Lake, and Marian Patricia and Robert Cipolaro, Whippany. He also leaves his brothers, Alfred, Staten Island, and Edward, Bondville, Vt., and grandchildren, Scott Hinson, Christopher and Greg Hellwig, and Matthew, Andrew and R.J. Cipolaro.

A memorial service will begin today at 8:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, and will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery, North Arlington.

Donations may be made in Mr. Molinelli’s name to the Jersey Shore Medical Center c/o the volunteer office, 1945 Highway 35, Neptune, 07753.

Cary Dugan Sweeney

Spring Lake resident Cary Dugan Sweeney, formerly of Bayonne, died Saturday, Jan. 8 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a brief illness. She was lifelong resident of Bayonne, who recently moved to Spring Lake.

Born and raised in Bayonne, she was well known and respected for her many volunteer, professional and political contributions to the community she loved. She was a very generous volunteer who dedicated her time in many ways. Among them were teaching CCD catechism lessons at St. Mary’s School, running bingo games at the Harborview Nursing Home in Jersey City, feeding the poor at the soup kitchen in Hoboken and caring for the infant child of a disabled neighbor.

Mrs. Sweeney retired from the Bayonne Board of Education where she was the executive administrator of the federal grants program. Prior to that she worked at city hall in the office of the mayor. When the Bayonne Naval Base was a thriving military operation, she worked as secretary there from 1952 until the early 1960s,

An ancestor of County Donegal parents, she was an active member of Ireland’s 32, an Irish-American organization dedicated to the preservation of Irish traditions in America. Being Irish and Democratic in Bayonne was a common occurrence, but being of Irish descent and a Democratic Committeewoman for more than 30 years gave her the distinction of being the longest serving committee person in the history of Bayonne; a true measure of her political loyalty to her Bayonne colleagues.

Mrs. Sweeney also was an officer in the Bayonne Democratic Committee and a vice chairwoman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization, representing the city of Bayonne. Former mayor, Dennis Collins, said Mrs. Sweeney was the most conscientious worker in city hall and was the most reliable political ally he ever had.

Mrs. Sweeney was predeceased by her husband, John, in 1979; brother-in-law, Joseph Murphy, in 1983, and sister, Rose Murphy, in 2000.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Noel and Robert Anderson, Wall Township; son and daughter-in-law, John Patrick and Marilyn Sweeney, Wall; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Alice “Cookie” and George Boyle, and Mary and Don Finn, all of Spring Lake; one brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Betty Dugan, Washington Township, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today at the O’ Brien Funeral Home, located at Highway 35 and New Bedford Road, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Interment will be in St. Catharine’s cemetery, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.

Betty Jane Weeden

Wall Township resident Betty Jane Weeden, formerly of Avon-by-the-Sea, died Monday, Jan. 10 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 73 years old.

Ms. Weeden was a charter member and trustee of the Wall High School Band Boosters and held various positions with the Wall school’s parent organizations. She was also a member of the Maryland Eastern Shore Genealogical Society, Colonial Village Williamsburg, Historic Allaire Village and the Wall Township Historical Society.

Mrs. Weeden is survived by her husband, Harold; son, Harold A. Weeden and his wife, Robin, Maryville, Tenn.; daughters, Jill L. Stephens and her husband, Jerry, Bluff City, Tenn., and Gail L. Bailey and her husband, Steven, Metuchen; a brother, James A. Sangston and his wife, Ann, Richmond, Va., and five grandchildren, Katie and Elissa Shulas, Sara Bailey, Cloi Craig and Emily Weeden.

Friends are invited to call at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, located at the corner of Routes 138 and 18, Wall, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with an 8:30 p.m. funeral service. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Allaire Village Inc. or the Wall High School Band Boosters would be appreciated.

Dana R. Applegate

Keansburg resident Dana R. Applegate, whose brother lives in Belmar, died Thursday, Jan. 6 in Red Bank.

He was 56 years old.

Mr. Applegate was an avid reader and participant in the Easter Seals Program.

He is survived by a brother, Ross, of Belmar, and many cousins.

A graveside service will be held at Monmouth Memorial Park on Friday at 11 a.m. The Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Howd

Wall Township resident Robert E. Howd died Tuesday, Dec. 21 in his home following a long and courageous battle with melanoma cancer.

He was 73 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Howd lived in Bradley Beach and Neptune before moving to Wall 46 years ago.

He was a graduate of Neptune High School and served 12 years in the Naval Reserves. Mr. Howd was a self-employed roofing contractor for 45 years. He was a member of the Wall United Church for 31 years, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Wall for 31 years, a member of the Bulldog Club of New Jersey where he served as president and a member of the Bulldog Club of America, Division I. He and his wife bred and showed English bulldogs. Mr. Howd was inducted into the Bulldog Hall of Fame for having bred ten champions.

Mr. Howd was predeceased by his parents, Robert E. Sr. and Lillian Howd.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Ann Kier Howd; son, Robert M. and daughter-in-law, Denise, Colorado; daughters, Lisa Howd Hansen and Linda Howd, both of Wall; sons, Michael E., Red Lion, Pa., and Eric S., and daughter-in-law, Katharyn, Ithaca, N.Y. He also leaves his brother, Donald P. Howd, Massachusetts; sister, Judith Dark, Vermont, and seven grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at Wall United Methodist Church, 2414 Old Mill Road, Spring Lake Heights on Sunday at 2 p.m. Funeral arrangements are from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Wall United Methodist Church.
