Donald J. Roche

Belmar resident Donald J. Roche died Sunday, May 1 in the home of his daughter in Wall Township.

He was 77 years old.

Born in Newark, he was raised in Irvington before moving to Shark River Hills, Neptune during 1963 and to Belmar in 1971.

Mr. Roche was a US Navy veteran of World War II during 1945-1948 as an Electronics Technician. His service included two years on the Destroyer USS Floyd B. Parks [DD-884] in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Roche received the following citations: the American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia, China Service Medal — Extended with the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Tin Can Sailors of NJ, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1333, Asbury Park, and the American Legion Post 346, Neptune.

Mr. Roche was a graduate of Seton Hall University, School of Business Administration, South Orange, class of 1952. He was employed for 35 years by Dun & Bradstreet at Newark and later in Freehold as a Business Analyst and District Service Consultant, retiring Dec. 31, 1986. He was also a communicant of the Church of St. Rose, Belmar, where he served as an usher.

Mr. Roche was predeceased by his parents James J. and Sabina McHale Roche.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, James J. and Tracy C. Roche, John M. and Kerry C. Roche, Mary Frances and John T. Lane Jr., all of Wall Township, and Sarah M. and Stephen Adams, Atlantic Highlands; former wife Mary C. Roche, Wall Township; and eight grandchildren, Jimmy, Kelly, and Colleen Roche, Kate and John T. Lane III, and Lauren, Casey, and Jack Roche.

A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Meridian Hospice, 4900 State Rt. 33, Suite 200, Neptune 07753-9930.

John J. Conte

Manchester resident John J. Conte, who has family in Wall Township, died Monday, May 2 in the Community Hospital, Toms River.

He was 64 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Conte attended St. Paul the Apostle Grammer School, St. Michael’s high School, and St. Peter’s College, Jersey City. He lived in the Jersey Shore area for over 30 years before moving to Manchester 10 years ago. Mr. Conte worked for Johnson & Johnson as a salesman in the Codman Division selling neurological supplies. He was responsible for the New York territory. Mr. Conte was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church, Point Pleasant as well as a Eucharistic minister. He taught CCD classes for several years and was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake and St. Denis, Manasquan. Mr. Conte was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf, biking, bowling, sailing and boating. John was president of the Leisure Village West Bowling team, a member of the Leisure Village West golf club, and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Conte was a well-read person and was always reading and staying up on current events.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Ann [nee Swallow] Conte; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Christopher and Anne Marie Conte, Wall Township, Mark and Nanci Conte, Toms River, and Craig and Erin Rochester, N.Y.; and six beloved grandchildren, Nicole Ann, Brandon, Brianna, Ryan, Megan, and Kevin.

Relatives and friends are invited to call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Oreander Family Home for Funerals, 2643 Old Bridge Road, Manasquan. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held today at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Cornelius Patrick Barrett

Spring Lake resident Cornelius Patrick Barrett died Monday, May 2 in the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, after a long illness.

He was 88 years old.

Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Barrett lived in Port Washington, Long Island before coming to Spring Lake 48 years ago. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving for 5 years in the Asiastic Pacific Theatre. After leaving the service, he worked for Pittsburgh Corning and International Permalite Corp. in New York City as Eastern Marketing Sales Manager.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Ellen O’Toole Barrett; sons Neal and Justin Barrett; daughter Patricia Barrett; grandchildren Jackie and Christina; brother Thomas Barrett; and sisters Rita O’Shea and Lynn Oswald.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

George B. Sachse

Point Pleasant resident George B. Sachse, who was a sales representative with Coast Star Newspapers, Manasquan, died Tuesday, May 10 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was 64 years old.

He was a graduate of Radnor High School, Wayne, Pa. and Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison, where he earned a degree in industrial engineering.

Mr. Sachse was a member of the United States Navy from 1958 to 1961.

He held various newspaper sales positions in the area, including with the Ocean County Leader, Manchester Publications and the Brick Town News. He also worked for the Vannote Lumber Company, Point Pleasant Beach.

Mr. Sachse had been a coach for the Brick Township Soccer Association and served on the board of directors for that organization. He was also a member of the Rotary International, District 751, and served as district secretary.

He was also a member of the Benihana Offshore Power Boat Race Committee, the Point Pleasant Rotary Club, the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce and the Brick Township Environmental Club, where he served as chairman from 1971 to 1972. He also served as president of the Rotary Club in 1976 and 1977 and as president of the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce in 1973.

Mr. Sachse served as president of the Brielle Chamber of Commerce for two years, stepping down this January.

George was a wonderful man. He was a generous and selfless person who lived his life caring more for the well-being of his family, friends and acquaintances than he did for himself.

In his battle against cancer, he was amazed at the support and generosity he received from that family, those friends and acquaintances.

In his final days, George still could not believe that so many cared so much for him. “I’m just a guy,” he said, unable to understand why he was being treated so well by everyone, including his caregivers in the Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center bone marrow unit.

George will be missed by all those he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Dodie, Point Pleasant; two daughters, Chrissy Sachse Vasquez and her husband, Victor, of Closters, and Beach Nicole Sachse and her partner, Jincy Pace, of San Jose, Calif.; one son, Darren Sachse, of New York City; one stepdaughter, Heather Mendenhall, of Kirkwood, Pa.; and one stepson, Kirk Scheidt, of Kansas City, Kan.; one brother, Paul Sachse and his wife Katherine, of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Cindy Furlong and her husband, Michael, Honey Brook, Pa.; and 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The Neary Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial gathering will be held this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home on South Street.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 45 Springfield Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081 or to the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, 386 Park Avenue South, 17th Floor, NY, NY 10016.

Eugene T. Zaborowski

Manchester and Naples, Fla. resident Eugene T. Zaborowski, who has family in Brielle, died Friday, May 6 in his home.

Born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Colonia, New Providence, Wall Township and Manchester and maintained a residence in Naples, Fla.

After attending Xavier High School in New York City, and Billard Academy, New London, Conn., he graduated from Yale University in the class of 1953. He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity at Yale.

Mr. Zaborowski retired from ABB Lummus Crest Inc., Bloomfield as vice president and project director.

He was a founder of Ave Maria University, Naples, Fla. Mr. Zaborowski was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan and a member of the Knights of Columbus of St. William’s Church, Naples, Fla.

Mr. Zaborowski was predeceased by his parents, Adam and Lena Zaborowski.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorrain Glubiak Zaborowski; children and their spouses, Robert and Joyce Zaborowski, Somerset, Gary and Jean Zaborowski, Pompton Plains, Nancy and Dr. James Ball, Plainsboro, Jeanmarie and Mark Dellosso, Brielle, and Richard and Ellen Zaborowski, Bel Aire, Md.; one brother, Raymond Zaborowski, Coventry, R.I.; and 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Ave Maria University, 1025 Commons Circle, Naples, FL 34119.

Regina Janiec

Manasquan resident Regina Janiec died Sunday, May 8 in the Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

She was 76 years old.

Born and raised in Garfield, she lived in Stanhope before moving to Manasquan 20 years ago.

Ms. Janiec was in the Naval Reserves during 1950.

She worked for NJ Bell Telephone for many years and retired as a manager at AT&T from the Basking Ridge office in 1984.

Ms. Janiec is survived by her sister, Blanche McDonald, Brick Township, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Brick Township.

Marcella Disimile Jackson

Wall Township resident Marcella Disimile Jackson died Saturday, May 7 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 63 years old.

Born in Astoria, Queens, N.Y., Mrs. Jackson resided in Astoria for many years. She later lived in Sea Girt and Bradenton, Fla., before moving to Wall Township.

Mrs. Jackson formerly worked as an executive assistant at Colonial Sand & Stone Company, Manhattan, and was presently an executive assistant at AG Edwards, Wall Township. Mrs. Jackson did volunteer work at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Manhattan. She was a communicant of St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan.

Mrs. Jackson was predeceased by her parents, Daniel J. Disimile, Sr. and Elaine Cunningham Disimile; her brother, Frances A. Disimile; and her loving husband, Raymond T. Jackson, who was an FBI agent in Manhattan.

She is survived by: a brother, Daniel J. Disimile, Jr., Milford, Pa.; sisters and brothers-in-law Kathryn and Bernard Begley, Sr., Milford Conn., Danielle and Chester MacLeod, Bradenton, Fla., and Mary Ellen and Carlton Hilliard, Sr., Clinton, Conn.; a sister, Donna Marie Disimile, Brielle; and a sister-in-law Rita Disimile, Caldwell. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

William J. Powers

Wall Township resident William J. Powers, “The Big Guy," died Sunday, May 8 in his home surrounded by family and friends.

He was 71 years old.

Born in New York City, he lived in Cleveland, Ohio before returning to the Jersey Shore and growing up in the Spring Lake/Manasquan area.

Mr. Powers attended St. Rose High School and graduated with the class of '51. He resided in Wall Township for 32 years.

Mr. Powers was employed with Coast Cigarettes for 40 years supervising the vending and amusement business. He most recently worked as a paraprofessional at Wall High School. Mr Powers often said “The kids at Wall High School are the best thing to happen to this generation.” He looked forward to seeing the students, staff and his co-workers every day.

Mr. Powers was a member of the Pat Joyce Association, better known as Pat’s 30 Acres, in Wall Township for 49 years, 15 of which he served as president. Working clam bakes and tending bar was his passion and he never failed to make sure people had a good time while at the club.

Mr. Powers was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Powers; a son, William J. Jr. and Shalano Bonanno, Santa Monica, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Kristen Powers, Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Toni King, Lanoka Harbor, and Margaret McCann, Greenville, Tenn.; and two brothers, Joseph Powers, Silverton, and Richard Powers, Largo, Fla.

A funeral service will be held today at 9:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the St. Denis Church Renovation Fund, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan 08736.

Edna 'Ruth' Migdol

Rochelle Park resident Edna “Ruth” Migdol, formerly of Manasquan, died Sunday, May 8.

She was 82 years old.

Mrs. Migdol had been a secretary at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member and past president of the Manasquan Woman’s Club. Mrs. Migdol was a charter president of the Manasquan AARP. She was a volunteer in local school reading programs and many other charitable organizations.

Mrs. Migdol was a parishioner of St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan, and a member of its senior program.

Mrs. Migdol was predeceased by her husband, Andrew.

She is survived by: her daughter, Margie Schenone and her husband Richard; two grandsons and their wives, Richard and Maria, and Peter and Daisy; and two great-grandchildren, Richard III and Brianna.

Funeral arrangements were from the Trinka-Faustini Funeral Service, Little Ferry.

Thomas Raymond Flanagan

Micco, Fla. resident Thomas Raymond Flanagan, formerly of the Jersey Shore area, died Monday, March 21 in his home after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

He was 78 years old.

Born in Asbury Park and schooled in the area, Mr. Flanagan served in the Navy in World War II.

In 1947 he joined the Tommy Tucker orchestra and toured the country with him until joining the Asbury Park Police Department in 1951. As a young officer Mr. Flanagan was honored as the hero of a shootout at a local jewelry store. He was deputy chief during the riots and also the beachfront director. Mr. Flanagan retired in early 1977 but shortly after, in April 1977, was hired by Brielle as the civilian police director.

From the early ’70s until the mid-’90s Mr. Flanagan was well-known along the Jersey Shore for his talent as a top notch musician. He played the trombone with the Frank Bryan Orchestra and also with Father Alphonse. He had two groups which played summers at the Warren Hotel in Spring Lake, Dixieland By The Pool and the 13- piece Tommy Flanagan’s Big Band. He was president and a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 399 for 22 years.

Mr. Flanagan retired to Barefoot Bay, Micco, Fla. 12 years ago where he was a volunteer EMT for the Micco Fire Department for five years.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Burkhardt Flanagan; two daughters, Kathleen Flanagan Fehr, Bethlehem, Pa., and Maureen Flanagan Frazier, Redondo Beach, Calif.; a sister, Doris Hayes, San Diego, Calif.; and three grandsons.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of Health First, 1900 Dairy Road, West Melbourne, FL, or The Micco Volunteer Fire Department, 301 Barefoot Blvd., Barefoot Bay, FL 32976, or the Sebastian United Church, 1029 Main St., Sebastian, FL 32958.

A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced in June. Funeral arrangements were from the Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Sebastian, Fla.
