Margaret Cifune Vigilante

Palm Bay, Fla. resident Margaret Cifune Vigilante, formerly of Belmar, died Sunday, May 8 in the Palm Bay Community Hospital, Palm Bay Fla.

She was 91 years old.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Vigilante lived to Belmar and Toms River before moving to Melbourne, Fla. in 1975.

She is survived by her son, Joseph Cifune and his wife Nettie, Manasquan; two daughters, Donna Byrne, Toms River, and Inez Devine and her husband Jack, Boca Raton, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren , Nicole, Joseph and Thomas Cifune, Richard, Joseph, William, John and Sean Byrne, Jack Devine and Donna Snead.

A funeral service will be held at St. Rose Church, Belmar, on Monday at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association in her memory.

Eugene Joseph Gallagher

Sea Girt resident Eugene Joseph Gallagher died Monday, May 9 in Shorrock Gardens, Lakewood.

He was 81 years old.

Born in Wilmington, Del., he lived in Spring Lake for 30 years before moving to Sea Girt 10 years ago.

Mr. Gallagher was vice president of manufacturing at American Safety in Ohio before retiring.

He was a US Navy Veteran, in active duty during World War II from 1943 to 1945.

Mr. Gallagher was a graduate of Archmere Academy, Claremont, Del. and then from the University of Delaware, Newark, Del.

He was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, a former member of the Spring Lake Golf Club, a member of the Spring Lake planning board for many years and was involved with the Spring Lake and Sea Girt Little Leagues.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Ann Logan Gallagher; a son, Eugene J., Jr., Brick Township; his daughters Ann Logan Gallagher, Spring Lake, and Sheila Reilly and son-in-law Robert Reilly, St. Leonard, Md.; five grandchildren and son-in-law John Swift.

Visiting will be today from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake. Burial will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetary, Wall. Donations may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834.

Mary Heimbold McCluskey

Wall Township resident Mary Heimbold McCluskey died Monday, May 9 in her home.

She was 100 years old.

Born in Harrison, she lived in Springfield before moving to Wall Township 20 years ago.

Mrs. McCluskey was a school teacher for the Harrison Board of Education before retiring many years ago. She was known to her extended family as “Aunt Mimi” and was noted for her loving kindness to everyone.

Mrs. McCluskey was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt. She was a member of the Christ Child Society at St. Rose of Lima, Short Hills, and was a member of The Family Rosary Society of St. Mark’s Church, where the group made over 100,000 rosaries that were sent to the missions throughout the world. She was very proud of her work with this society. Mrs. McCluskey was an avid champion bridge player and celebrated her 100th birthday a month ago with 60 of her closest family and friends.

Mrs. McCluskey was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J. McCluskey, 20 years ago; her brothers .Rev. Arthur N. Heimbold, Joseph L. Heimbold and Charles A. Heimbold; a sister Katharine R. Heimbold; and a nephew Captain James R. Heimbold.

She is survived by nephews Joseph Heimbold Jr. and his wife Nadia, Erie, Pa., Charles Heimbold, Jr. and his wife Monika, Riverside, Conn., Arthur Heimbold and his wife Ursula, Glendale, Ga.; Peter Heimbold and his wife Nancy, Sheboygan, Wis., David Heimbold and his wife Ellen, St. Augustine, Fla. and John Heimbold and his wife Jenny, San Diego, Calif.; a niece, Jeanne Elizabeth Heimbold Boehles, Monmouth Beach; grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.

Visiting will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 8:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt. Burial will be at St. Theresa cemetery, Summit. Donations may be made in her name to the Maryknoll Missions, PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545.

Eveline P. Garcia

Neptune City resident Eveline P. Garcia, who has family in Manasquan, died Sunday, May 1 in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 97 years old.

Born in Cypress Hills, N.Y., she lived in Union before moving to the shore area. For many years Mrs. Garcia and her husband, Manny, were owners of Eveline’s Coffee Shop and Luncheonette in Spring Lake, until their retirement in 1983.

Mrs. Garcia was predeceased by her first husband, Gustav Martin Erickson, who died in 1948, and second husband Manuel Garcia, who died in 1993.

She is survived by her beloved only son, Richard Harding Erickson and his wife Nancy, Manasquan; three grandchildren, Richard G. Erickson, Westfield, Pamela N. Llewellyn, Little Silver, and Wendy N. Johnson, Brielle; and eight grandchildren, Justin, Bradley and Brennan Erickson; Patrick and Walker Llewellyn; and Lauren, Allison and Thomas Johnson.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Parnum T. Kerrey

Wanamassa resident Parnum T. Kerrey, who has family in Belmar, died Tuesday, May 10 in the Manor by the Sea, Ocean Grove.

He was 84 years old.

Born and raised in Michigan, he met his future wife while stationed in Conn. Mr. Kerrey was a 52 year resident in Wanamassa, moving from East Haven, Conn. Prior to his entering the Air Force, Mr. Kerrey attended the Valpraiso College, Ind. During World War II, he served with the US Air Force as a member of the Flying Tigers, serving in India and China. Mr. Kerrey began his work at Ft. Monmouth as an instructor for the Signal School and then went on to become a technical writer for the US Government. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Kerrey was predeceased in death by his parents, George A. and Bergith Peterson Kerrey, and sister Irene Kerrey.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth; daughters Betty Ann Cestari and husband Michael, Knowlton, Nancy Lee Keller and husband Robert, Belmar, and Pamela I. Kerrey, Wanamassa; sisters Frances Brandt, Ocean Grove, and May Morganroth, Brooksville, Fla.; and grandchildren Randy, Ronald, Laura, Adrienne and Gayle. He is also survived by seven grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township.

William Joseph Connellan Sr.

Spring Lake resident William Joseph Connellan, Sr. died Wednesday, May 11 peacefully in his home, surrounded by his devoted family.

He was 76 years old.

Born on Oct. 4, 1928, Mr. Connellan was raised in Riverdale, N.Y. by his parents, Thomas and Ann Connellan. He was the fourth of eight children. Educated at Saint Margaret’s Church Grammar School and Cardinal Hayes High School, he completed his studies at New York University with a degree in business. Mr. Connellan served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his return, he worked for The Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City, becoming a vice-president and retiring after 30 years of employment there. He was also a past president of the American Institute of Banking in New York City.

After retiring from the bank, he went on to work at his wife’s family business, Park Benziger Distributors in Westchester, N.Y. and retired in 1995. He was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, and of St. Joseph’s Church, Bronxville, N.Y. Mr. Connellan was an avid golfer and reader and a wonderful grandfather. “Pop”, as he was known to his grandchildren, always had a big hug and kiss ready at every greeting. “Handyman extraordinaire” to all his relatives’ homes, he took his daily break at Joe’s Deli in Spring Lake, surrounded by his buddies.

Mr. Connellan is predeceased by his sister Miriam.

He is survived by his wife Nancyle Benziger Connellan; sons William J. Connellan, Jr. and his wife Tracy, Wall Township, J.P. Connellan and his wife Nora, Sea Girt, and Thomas J. Connellan and his wife Kara, Cazenovia, N.Y.; brother Father Thomas Connellan, C.S.P.; sisters Helene O’Neil, Sister Ann Connellan, S.C., Angela Murphy, Mary Dougherty and Liz McGahren; and grandchildren Kiley, Kathleen, Tyler, T.J., Hunter, Jake and Courtney.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

James Joseph Kennedy

Avon-by-the-Sea resident James Joseph Kennedy died Thursday, May 12 in his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was 72 years old.

Born and raised in Bayonne, he has lived in Avon-by-the-Sea for the past 14 years. Mr. Kennedy had been employed as an executive with J.C. Penney Corporation, Plano, Texas for 33 years before retiring in 1993. He had served as a member of the Board of Directors of Pamrapo Bank, Bayonne. Mr. Kennedy was a counselor for S.C.O.R.E., had served as a mediator for the Ocean County Court System, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon-by-the-Sea, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bayonne and was a member of St. Vincent de paul of Stuart, Fla. He was also a member of the Spring Lake Golf Club and the Mariner Sands Golf Club, Stuart, Fla. Mr. Kennedy was a graduate of St. Peter’s College, Jersey City, and had served as a Lieutenant for the US Navy.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary O’Donnell Kennedy; sons Michael J. and his wife Teri, Chatham, and James M., Avon; daughter Megan K. and her husband Normand Savaria, Spring Lake; sister Katherine Kennedy Brennan, Granite Bay, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the ARC of Monmouth County, 1158 Wayside Rd., Tinton Falls, 07712.

Albert Holloway

Wall Township resident Albert Holloway died Tuesday, May 10 in his home.

He was 93 years old.

Born and raised in what was known as Five Points, Mr. Holloway was a committeeman of Wall Township and Mayor in 1949. He was president of the Wall Board of Education for seven years, president and charter member of the South Wall Fire Company for 21 years, and captain of the Three Foot Branch Gun Club. Mr. Holloway was also a member of the Wall Township Lions Club. He played baseball for the Farmingdale Eagles in the late 1920’s and the Belmar Crescents. He owned and operated Albert Holloway Mason Builders.

Mr. Holloway was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, in Nov. 2000.

He is survived by daughters Janet Larson, Sea Girt, and Pattie Holly, Wall; grandson Paul A. Larson, Jr. and his wife Marie E., Wall; granddaughter Cathy Larson, Sea Girt; and great-grandchildren Paul A. Larson, III and Robert J. Larson, both of Wall.

Funeral arrangements were from the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township. The family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to either the Embracing Hospice Care, 2102 Rt. 34 South, STE B, Wall Township 07719; A.R.C. of Monmouth County, 1158 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls, 07712; or the First United Methodist Church, 906 Grand Avenue, Asbury Park 07712.

Mickalina Serventi

Spring Lake Heights resident Mickalina Serventi [nee DeGregorio] died Thursday, May 12 in Care One in Wall Township.

She was 87 years old.

Born in Union City, she lived in North Bergen and Cliffside Park before moving to Spring Lake Heights. She was a former seamstress and a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in New Jersey.

Mrs. Serventi was predeceased by her husband John in 1988; sisters Rose DeGregorio in 1993, and Maria DellaPenta in 2004.

She is survived by daughters Ethel D’Abramo and her husband Antonio, Port Richey, Fla., and Elaina Basile and her husband Thomas, Spring Lake Heights; grandchildren James Basile and his wife Jennifer, Morris Plains, Jonathan Basile, Spring Lake Heights, and Michael D’Abramo and his fiancee Donna Koshlap, Port Richey, Fla., and Linda O’Toole and her husband Michael, Temple Terrace, Fla.; great-grandchildren Joseph Basile, Spring Lake Heights, and Angelina O’Toole, Temple Terrace, Fla; step-great-grandchildren Alexandra and Austin O’Toole, Temple Terrace, Fla.; brother-in-law Emilio DellaPenta, Port Richey, Fla.; and nephew Frank DeGregorio and his wife Betty, Manchester.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation North Jersey Affiliate, 785 Springfield Ave., Summit 07901.

Shirley M. Brahn

Spring Lake resident Shirley M. Brahn died Saturday, May 14 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 67 years old.

Born in Neptune, Mrs. Brahn has resided in Spring Lake for the past 51 years. She was employed as a nurse’s aide at Spring Lake Heights Rets Home for several years, and as a volunteer at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Mrs. Brahn was an avid bowler and enjoyed fishing on the beach. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren in the family pool.

Mrs. Brahn is predeceased by her parents Stanley and Gladys Combs.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, C. Russell Brahn; children Russell and Donna Brahn, Spring Lake Heights, Don and Margie Brahn, Spring Lake, Linda Brahn, Lake Como, Tom and Carol Brahn, Spring Lake Heights, and Billy Brahn, also of Spring Lake heights; and grandchildren Ben, Don Jr., Brett, Tiffany, Chris, Justin, Shannon, Laura, Kristen, Richie and Cory.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Spring Lake First Aid Squad or the Goodwill Fire Company #2, 311 Washington Ave., Spring Lake 07762.

John A. Orefice, Sr.

Bradley Beach resident John A. Orefice, Sr. died Sunday, May 15 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 76 years old.

Born in the Bronx, he lived in Bronxville, N.Y. before moving to Bradley Beach 12 years ago. Mr. Orefice was owner and partner of Orefice Brothers Jewelry, New York City for over 30 years before working at Conde Nast Publications, also in New York City, from which he retired. Mr. Orefice was a communicant of the Ascension Church in Bradley Beach. He was an active member of the Tuckahoe School District’s PTA and was honored for his contribution to Tuckahoe’s youth for his work with the Dad’s Club Basketball Program in the 1970’s.

Mr. Orefice was predeceased by his parents Anna [Gargiulo] and Ralph N. Orefice, Bronx.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Ann E. [LaBella]; sons John Jr. and his wife Jeanne [Mitchell], Pelham, N.Y.; Christopher and his wife Jeannine [Lettiere], Eastchester, N.Y., and Stuart J., Lawrenceville; daughters Janice A. Dehn and her husband Thomas, Wilton, Conn., Thea A. Pace and her husband Michael, Marlboro; brothers Ralph R. and his wife Norma, Avon-by-the-Sea, and Kenneth R. and his wife Geraldine, Eastchester and Avon-by-the-Sea; grandchildren Joanna Orefice and Christopher and Nicholas Dehn; Dominique and Peter Orefice, and Alexander Pace; and step-grandchildren Benjamin Wunderlich and Chirstopher and Amanda Pace.

A funeral service will be held today at 9:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m. at Ascension Church, Bradley Beach. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Tuckahoe School Foundation, 65 Siwanoy Blvd., Eastchester N.Y. 10707.

Dorothy Minerva Verni

Sea Girt resident Dorothy Minerva Verni died Friday, May 13 in her home.

She was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. she lived in Howard Beach, N.Y. before coming to Sea Girt 23 years ago. Mrs. Verni was employed as a seamstress with Spilton Brothers in Manhattan before retiring 23 years ago. She was a communicant, and a member of the Altar Rose Society of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.

Mrs. Verni was predeceased by her beloved husband, Vito Verni, in 1984.

She is survived by her daughter Annette Sudowsky, Sea Girt, and son Vito Verni, Manasquan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Charles ‘Crabgrass Charlie’ Plochock

Manasquan resident Charles “Crabgrass Charlie” Plochock died suddenly Sunday, May 15 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a brief illness.

He was 60 years old.

Born in Orange, he lived in Roseland and then Manasquan for approximately 25 years. A Montclair State College graduate, Mr. Plochock was a defensive end on the football team. He was a bartended at Tierney’s, Montclair, and other bars in the shore area for years. His family spent many summers in Lavallette where he was a lifeguard. An avid reader and history buff, Mr. Plocock would read for hours on the beach. His family thought the History Channel was broadcast just for him. Mr. Plochock began his career as a high school history teacher, and was part-owner of the Manasquan Weight Room. He loved the outdoors and worked as a landscaper in later years.

He is survived by his companion Jane Harrison and his beloved “knucklehead” Quigley.
