Helen Marie Manhardt

Spring Lake resident Helen Marie Manhardt, formerly of Elizabeth and Ocean Gate, died on Friday, Aug. 12 in her home after a brief illness.

She was 93 years old.

While living in Elizabeth, Mrs. Manhardt was an active member of St. Michael’s Church and involved in the Women’s Auxiliary and other church and charitable endeavors.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles G. Manhardt Sr., in 1975 and her son, Charles Manhardt Jr., in 1999.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Hilda, of Rahway, Jim and Laurie, of Spring Lake; her daughter Marjorie Manhardt, of New York, NY; her siblings, Alice Hartman and Fred and Herb Hurler, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral arrangements were by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. In lieu of flowers, a memorial offering may be made to the Sisters of Christian Charity, 350 Bernardsville Road, Mendham, 07945.

Pentti E. Ehrola

Point Pleasant resident Pentti E. Ehrola, whose children live in Brielle, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Point Pleasant for 47 years.

A United States Army, World War II veteran, Mr. Ehrola was a carpenter, being a member of, and was employed by, the Ocean County Carpenters Union Local No. 2018 for 55 years.

He was a member of the American Legion and was a former youth hockey coach as well as a former Boy Scouts of America leader.

An avid bowler, he enjoyed model airplane/ship building and golf. He also had a passion for animal welfare.

A beloved husband and loving father, Mr. Ehrola is survived by his wife of nearly 49 years, Noni [nee McLane-Herborn]; two daughters and sons-in-law, Noni E. Dickerson and her husband Stanley, of Brielle, and Alix E. Troast and her husband Gary, of Jupiter, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Pentti E. Jr. and his wife Nancy, of Brielle, and Thomas R. and his wife Richele, of Brick. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Thomas, Shannon, Erin, Christopher, Daniel, Margaret, Olivia and Emma.

A memorial service in tribute of his life will be held today at 4 p.m. at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made in his memory to either Popcorn Park Zoo, P. O. Box 43, Forked River, 08731; Sunshine House, 1131 Bay Ave., Point Pleasant, 08742; or to the American Diabetes Assoc., 19 Schoolhouse Road, Somerset, 08873, would be deeply appreciated.

Doris C. Ridley

Manasquan resident Doris C. Ridley died Saturday, Aug. 13 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 93 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Ridley was a summer resident in Manasquan for 70 years and moved here permanently in 1970. She graduated from Panzer College [now Montclair State University]. Mrs. Ridley worked as a physical education teacher for the Jersey City school system and later was a homemaker.

She was a parishioner of St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan. With an interest in civic affairs, Mrs. Ridley, in 1976, was the first woman to run for a council seat in Manasquan. A longtime active member of the Manasquan Democratic Club, she was known for her letters to The Coast Star newspaper.

She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Harold Ridley Sr., who died in 1974 and her son, the Rev. Harold Ridley S.J., who at the time of his death in January, was serving in his 11th year as president of Loyola University in Baltimore.

She is survived by a daughter, Sr. Judith Ridley, S.S.J. of Philadelphia; a son and daughter-in-law, John A. and Althea Ridley, of Bernardsville and Manasquan; and six grandchildren, Liz Leckemby, Jennifer Staikos, John Ridley Jr., David Ridley, William Ridley and Christopher Ridley.

Mrs. Ridley’s remains were donated for anatomical research. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Development Fund, 9701 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, Pa., 19118.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of the arrangements.

Monsignor Harrold A. Murray

Manasquan resident the Rev. Monsignor Harrold A. Murray, formerly of Newark, Short Hills, and Sea Girt, died peacefully in his home after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

He was 81 years old.

Monsignor Murray was born and raised in Newark. Following his studies at Seton Hall University and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1949 and elevated to papal chaplain in 1964. Monsignor Murray’s first pastoral assignment was St. Teresa of Avila Parish, Summit. He later served with the U.S. Catholic Conference in Washington, D.C.; was director of the administration of the Newark Archdiocese; and was pastor of St. Rose of Lima, Short Hills. In 1984, he became director of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C., and served in the position until returning to the Archdiocese as the secretary for community affairs, a position he held until 1988 when he was named pastor of St. Joseph Church, West Orange. Monsignor Murray retired in 1994.

Up until his illness, he assisted at St. Denis Church, Manasquan; Our Lady of Peace Church, Normandy Beach; and St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt. He served as the volunteer chaplain at Point Pleasant and Brick Hospitals, Manasquan First Aid Squad, Manasquan Hook and Ladder Company, Manasquan Engine Co. No. 2 and as the chaplain for the Nights of Malta, State of New Jersey.

Monsignor Murray was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Harrold A. and Beatrice M. Sanders Murray; two brothers, Peter and John F. Murray; and a sister and brother-in-law, Dr. William and Beatrice Farley.

He is survived by his sister, Sara Grantham, of Manasquan; his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Elizabeth Murray, of Florida; and numerous nephews, nieces and dear friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Rose of Lima Church, Short Hills. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre cemetery, East Orange. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Denis Catholic Church in Manasquan on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Seton Hall Prep School, 120 Northfield Ave., Westfield, 07052 or the Manasquan First Aid Squad, 63 Broad St., Manasquan 08736. Funeral arrangements were by the McDonough Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Alfred J. Sheppard Jr.

Belmar resident Alfred J. Sheppard, Jr. died Saturday, Aug. 13 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 76 years old.

Mr. Sheppard was born in Newark, where he resided for his first 12 years before moving to Union. He completed his education at Union High School, Class of 1948.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as an aviation electronic technician.

He was the owner of Guardian Construction from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was also a real estate broker for 47 years. He established Sheppard Realty, a property management company in the Monmouth County area, in 1958. He served as a committeeman for Boy Scout Troop 40 in Belmar for 15 years. He was one of the founding members of the Belmar Chamber of Commerce, a member of the V.F.W. Post of Belmar, the Knights of Columbus 3639 of St. Cecilia’s Church, Iselin, and a parishioner of St. Rose Church, Belmar.

He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred J. and Mary Mundweiler Sheppard.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marie Hafenmaier Sheppard; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Edward Bedard, of North Carolina; three sons, Alfred J. III, of Washington, D.C., David J. and his wife Lisa, of New York, and Wayne J., of Belmar; three brothers, Donald, of Greenbrook, Robert, of Arizona, and William ,of Fanwood; and seven cherished grandchildren, Mary, Matthew, Michael, Mark, Joseph, John and Dylan.

Funeral arrangements were done by McDonough Funeral Home, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Belmar First Aid, 9th Avenue and D Street, Belmar, 07719.

Jon Rok Bergen

Manchester resident Jon Rok Bergen, a graduate of Wall Township High School, died Sunday, July 24 in an automobile accident outside of Atlantic City.

He was 29 years old.

He was born in Seoul, South Korea. He came to the United States in 1987 and was adopted by Joseph and Marjorie into the Bergen family.

Despite facing significant linguistic and cultural barriers, he went on to graduate from Wall Township High School in 1995. Throughout his high school career, he participated in sports and excelled in chess. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for four years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. After the service he returned to New Jersey, eventually settling into a managerial position at Shop-Rite in Manchester.

He is survived by his parents, his sister, Kara, of St. Louis, Mo.; his brother, Steven, of Washington D.C.; and his fiancee, Jennifer McGrath.

Donations to the Manchester First Aid, 29 Colonial Dr., Manchester, are requested in lieu of flowers.

Gerald A. Mazzucco

Pompano Beach, Fla. resident Gerald A. Mazzucco, formerly of Manasquan, died Sunday, Aug. 7 in Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

He was 69 years old.

Born in Summit, Mr. Mazzucco resided in New Providence and Manasquan before moving to Florida 24 years ago.

He was the vice president of A.V. Mazzucco, Inc., New Providence.

He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Rat and Rose Marie Mazzucco, Beach Haven Park; nephews, Steven, Frank and Thomas Nolfi; and nieces, Susan Bevilacqua and Jennifer Mazzucco.

A committal prayer service will be held today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of St. Catharine cemetery Mausoleum. The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, is in charge of arrangements.

Celia E. Magee

Wall Township resident Celia E. Magee died Thursday, Aug. 11 in Care One, Wall.

She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Magee was born in Woonsocket, R.I., moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1937 and to Matawan in 1941. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member for over 50 years, serving as a deacon, elder, organist and choir director.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon F. Magee, in 1982; a brother, Walter Crepeau; four sisters, Lauretta, Belva and Viola Crepeau and Rita Meagher.

Mrs. Magee is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas A. Doris of Brenham, Texas; Timothy G. and Bonnie, of Manasquan; Terrance D. and Kathy, of Toms River; Theodore R. and Carol ,of Middletown; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Matawan, Route 34 on Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.

The family requests donations be sent to Meridian Hospice Foundation, 4900 Route 33, Suite 200, Neptune, 07753, in lieu of flowers.

Susan P. Fitzsimons

Wall Township resident Susan P. Fitzsimons died Wednesday, Aug. 24 at the Sunnyside Manor, Wall.

She was 99 years old.

Born in Texas, she lived in Virginia and Asbury Park before moving here three years ago.

She is survived by two sons, Robert of Texas and Thomas of Asbury Park; a daughter, Virginia Waldron, Asbury Park.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Armitage Funeral Home, Wall.

Chesley C. Poling Jr.

Ocean Grove resident Chesley C. Poling died Wednesday, Aug. 24 in his home.

He was 76 years old.

Born in East McKeesport, Pa., Mr. Poling lived in Allentown before moving to Ocean Grove. He graduated from East McKeesport High School in 1947. Mr. Poling then served in the US Navy during the Korean War from 1950-1954 on Destroyer Escorts as a disbursement clerk. He began a banking career as a teller and ended as a vice president, a position he held for many years. Mr. Poling’s specialty was trust and estate planning. He was also a trust estate taxation officer. Mr Poling retired in 1995 from First Union Fidelity, Trenton. He also had a private income tax practice for 30 years. Many of his clients became lifelong friends of both he and his wife, Maureen. Mr. Poling was a communicant of Ascension RC Church in Bradley Beach, where he had many special, caring friends. He volunteered for five years at MOCEANS Independent Living Center in Long Branch. This, Mr. Poling felt, was truly one of the most fulfilling and important activities in his retirement. He also spent much time enjoying his beloved dog, Greta. Mr. Poling was a very special man, who had tremendous love and concern for others and strong faith throughout his life. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, his quicker smile as well as his embrace of daily life.

Mr. Poling was predeceased by his parents, Verna and Chesley C. Poling, Sr.

He is survived by a wife of 20 years, Maureen Gail Poling; two sisters, Mae Swawger and Shirley Kosar, E. McKeesport, Pa.; a brother, Willis, Baytown, Texas; two sons, Hugh, Burlington, and Robert, Allentown; three daughters, Sheryl Russo, Allentown; Sandra Grabowski, Hamilton; and Sharon Stavinski, Wrightstown; 14 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, especially Cindy, David and Scott, who were so dear to him. All of his family, as well as his wife’s family, enjoyed special times with “Uncle Ches.” They enjoyed his humor as well as his love and care for each of them.

Ann M. Martin

Spring Lake Heights resident Ann M. [nee Benevento] Martin died Thursday, Aug. 25 at Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown.

She was 56 years old.

Born in Staten Island, Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Port Richmond High School, Staten Island, and had lived in Brooklyn before moving to Spring Lake Heights 27 years ago. She had been a self-employed Private Duty Nurses Aide for many years and had also been employed in the aftercare program for Monmouth-Ocean Education Services, Spring Lake Heights. Mrs. Martin was also a communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish, Spring Lake.

She was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Felicia Passarella Benevento.

Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband of 31 years, Joseph F. Martin III; a daughter, Felicia Martin; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. IV and Gina Martin, Point Pleasant; two grandchildren Joseph F. V and Madison Martin; two sisters, Barbara Guica and Teresa Chianese, both of Red Bank.

The funeral arrangements were provided by O’Brien Funeral Home.

Isabelle M. Goralski

Ormond Beach resident Isabelle M. Goralski died Friday, Aug. 26 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 86 years old.

Born in Woonsocket, R.I., Mrs. Goralski resided in Elmwood Park before moving to Florida 20 years ago. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes, Daytona Beach, Fla.

Mrs. Goralski was predeceased by her husband, Witold, who died in 1994.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Georgiann Goralski, Park Ridge; her daughter and son-in-law, Joan and William Damora, Wall; a sister, Lucille Clark, Ormond Beach; and grandchildren Brittany, Jonathan, Cary, Jennifer and Christie.

Funeral arrangements were made by Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.
