Beatrice M. Farley

Beatrice M. Farley, whose joie de vivre and love of people brightened the lives of all she touched, died peacefully at home with her family Monday, April 26. She was 78.

Born the second of six children to Beatrice S. and Harrold A. Murray, M.D. Bea, as she was known to her friends until the arrival of her grandchildren, grew up at 624 Mt. Prospect Ave., Newark. Not only was that the address of her family, but was also the location of her father’s in-home pediatric practice, a hectic manner of living that would be joyfully repeated throughout her married life.

Following graduation from high school at Marylawn of the Oranges, Bea received her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Mills College, N.Y.C. in 1947.

On August 28, 1948, in Good Counsel Church, Newark, Bea became the wife of her own pediatrician, Dr. William Farley. Little did her new husband know that he had just married a woman who would help him practice medicine for the next half century.

Bea also practiced medicine regularly. That she lacked the basic licensing credentials did not faze her; by this time she had borne three children while surviving polio and the devastating effects the presence of the RH negative blood factor wreaked on her many pregnancies. If her husband was out on house calls and a distraught mother called the one telephone line that doubled for home and office, Bea nursed each mother through cold sponge baths for 102 degree fevers, or prescribed rubbing scotch on the gums of a teething infant. Over the years, this advice would be repeated thousands of times.

In 1972, Bea moved the Farley family, medical practice and all, to Brielle so she could be closer to her father who was ill and living in Sea Girt. And, once again, together they built a pediatric practice in their new home on William Drive. However, since building such a business took time, Bea went back to teaching, this time the third grade at St. Catherine’s School, Spring Lake.

The arrival of her three grandchildren called for a new name and Bea promptly announced that henceforth she would be known as “Mame” after the Angela Lansbury and Carol Channing Broadway character. No name could have been more appropriate, as Mame specialized in applying a sense of the “larger-than-life” to every one and everything she touched, from St. Catherine’s to the Manasquan River Golf Club where she knew every member and employee and where, with her husband, she played Mrs. Claus to his Santa’s helper for many years.

Bea Farley was predeceased July 1st, by her beloved husband and quietly perfect partner, Bill.

She is survived by her three children, Cris, Blandina and Sylvia Ann Badenhausen; her daughter-in-law, Sara; her son-in-law Bill Badenhausen; her three grandchildren, Bill, Tim and Sara Farley; her two brothers, Msgr. Harrold A. Murray, Manasquan and Dr. Michael S. Murray, his wife Elizabeth, Marco Island, Fla.; and her sister, Sara M. Grantham, Manasquan.

Mame also leaves her mammoth collection of costume earrings for every occasion, from day-glow skulls for Halloween to blinking ornaments at Christmas.

She also authored, in 1994, her own “Funeral Arrangements” which read, in part, “At the convenience of everyone I want a simple Mass with the Our Father, Ave Maria and Panis Angelicus sung. At the end I want Mame played. Afterwards a cocktail party is to take place. Jojo McDonough (late owner of McDonough’s Funeral Home, Belmar) knows about this. Peace!!” In her memory, and in accordance with her instructions, such a Mass will take place Tuesday, May 11th at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, at 3 P.M. followed by cocktails back at the house.
