William Ripley Lord

Tinton Falls resident William Ripley Lord, formerly of the shore area, died Tuesday, Feb. 7 at his home.

He was 80 years old.

Born in Orange, he lived in the shore area before moving to Tinton Falls three years ago. Mr. Lord served in the Army during World War II with the 312th Engineer Combat Battalion of the 87th Infantry Division. He was also an active member of the Battle of the Bulge Veterans Group. Mr. Lord was a certified public accountant in private practice before retiring in 2003. He was also a member of the North Shore Antiques Auto Club Inc. of New Jersey.

Mr. Lord is survived by his wife of 53 years, Prudence [Peloquin] Lord; his children, Mark Lord, and his wife, Jackie, Nevada, Amy Lord Harkey, and her husband, Keith, North Carolina, Cathy Lord, Conneticut; and his granddaughter, Melissa Harkey.

Visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall Township, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. with a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. to celebrate Mr. Lord’s life with Rev. John J. Hoogland presiding, followed by military honors. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Protestant Community of Seabrook Village, 3000 Essex Rd., Tinton Falls, 07753, or Meridian Hospice, 1340A Campus Parkway, Neptune, 07753.

Raymond N. Long

Avon-by-the-Sea resident Raymond N. Long died Monday, Jan. 30 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 83 years old.

A life long resident of the shore area, Mr. Long was a graduate of Asbury Park High School, class of 1941. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a musician for many years playing with a number of bands around the area.

Mr. Long is survived by his sister, Marguerite [Long] Daubert; and his two nephews, Scott Daubert, North Carolina, and Guy Daubert, London.

The Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township, was in charge of arrangements.

Edith L. Derres

Wall Township resident Edith L. Derres died Friday, Feb. 10 at the Tower Lodge Nursing Home, Wall.

She was 95 years old.

Ms. Derres was a registered nurse. She was an operating room supervisor at Columbia University Hospital, New York City, and also worked at the former Fitkin Hospital, Neptune, and the former Point Pleasant Hospital, Point Pleasant. Ms. Derres was a graduate of the Ann May Nursing School in Spring Lake and was a member of the Ann May Alumnae Association, Neptune. She was also a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan, and the Glendola Grange, Wall.

Ms. Derres is survived by her loving friends and family, Theodore and Della Hill, Wall, and cousins Henrey Derres Jr., Utah, and Suzann Briggs, Freehold.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements.

Evi Aavekukk

Ocean Grove resident Evi Aavekukk died Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center, Allenwood.

She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Aavekukk was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and came to the United States in 1949 as a widow. She was widowed by her husband, Karl Aavekukk during World War II while in Astonia. She lived in West Camp, N.Y., before moving to New Jersey, where she retired from Ft. Monmouth/Camp Evans as part of the editorial staff after 25 1/2 years of service. Mrs. Aavekukk lived in Long Branch, Asbury Park, and Ocean Grove before moving to the Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center three years ago.

She is survived by her daughter, Tiia Carswell, Atlanta, Ga.; her granddaughter, and her husband, Tanya Eve and Andrew Peterson; and her three great-granddaughters, Priita, Aila and Annika, all of San Francisco.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, was in charge of arrangements.

Charlotte McGowan

Allenwood resident Charlotte McGowan died Saturday, Feb. 11 at Geraldine Thompson Care Center.

She was 101 years old.

Mrs. McGowan was born in Lithuania and came to the United States in 1907. She resided in Harrison, Bloomfield and Oceanport most of her life. Mrs. McGowan was a homemaker and a professional creative seamstress all of her life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. McGowan was predeceased by her husband, George McGowan, in 1971. She was the sole survivor of ten siblings. Mrs. McGowan was also predeceased by a long time friend and companion, Frank Kilmer.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas McGowan, and his friend, Joyce Nakano, Honolulu, Edgar, and his wife, Ann McGowan, St. Augustine Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Patricia, and her husband, William Spillane, Lakewood; her grandchildren, Bill, Judy, Chris, Michelle, Rachel, Bryan and Michael; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at St. Martha Catholic Church, Point Pleasant.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge or arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mrs. McGowan’s favorite charity, Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, Conn., 06260-2503.

Ilene M. Curlis

Wall Township resident Ilene M. Curlis died Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Sunnyside Manor Nursing Home, Wall.

She was 89 years old.

Born and raised in Bloomfield, Mrs. Curlis lived in Farmingdale and Boynton Beach, Fla., before moving to Wall in 2001. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Farmingdale. Mrs. Curlis was a homemaker.

Mrs. Curlis was predeceased by her husband, Marshall, in 1987; her brother, Robert Garner, in 1927; and her sister, Jean Cregg, in 1996.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Gail, Farmingdale; and her grandchildren, Scott and Gregory.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements.

James Francis Christenson

Spring Lake Heights resident James Francis Christenson died Monday, Feb. 13 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 93 years old.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Christenson lived there before coming to Spring Lake Heights 36 years ago. He was vice president of Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. Mr. Christenson was employed there for 48 years, retiring in 1976. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Christenson sat on the planning board and the shade tree commission of Spring Lake Heights and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, SCAMP [St. Catherine’s Association of Mature Persons] and Manasquan Elk’s Lodge 2534.

He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Christenson.

Mr. Christenson is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria O’Brien Christenson; his brother, Charles Bennett, Brooklyn, N.Y.; his nephews, Edward and James Christenson, Richard, Thomas, John and Matthew O’Brien; his nieces, Kathleen Ghegan, Laura Gazerwitz, Eileen Napolitano, Linda Meehan, Mary DeMello, Linda McCrory, Jane Day, Alexandra O’Brien, Toni Wyatt, Mary Beth Jacoby; and many grandnieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township, on Friday at 10 a.m. A mass will be at St. Catherine's Church, Spring Lake, at 11 a.m. followed by committal at St. Catherine’s cemetery, Sea Girt. Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 US Highway 1, North Brunswick, 08902.

Frederick T. R. Koenig

Sea Girt resident Frederick T. R. Koenig died Monday, Feb. 20 at Meridian Nursing and Rehab Center, Brick Township.

He was 81 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Koenig resided in Spring Lake Heights before moving to Sea Girt in 1963. He wintered in Palm Beach Shores, Fla. Mr. Koenig graduated from St. Peter’s Prep and attended Holy Cross College before entering the U.S. Navy during World War II. Following the war he graduated with an accounting degree from Seton Hall University. Mr. Koenig was vice president of Crown Distributors, Wall Township, and retired in 1995 after 47 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Sea Girt, and was a member of the Manasquan River Golf Club, the B.P.O.E., Lodge 2534, Manasquan, and VFW Post 1838, Manasquan.

Mr. Koenig was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Ann Koenig, in 2004.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, F. Thomas and Dolores Koenig, Brielle, Michael V. and Janet Koenig, Brielle, Richard D. and Jean Koenig, Manahawkin, Stephen C. and Victoria Koenig, Las Vegas, Nev., and Daniel Koenig, Point Pleasant; his daughters and sons-in-law, Beatrice and Bill Schrader, Point Pleasant, and Patricia E. and Stephen Valentino, New York City; his brother, Richard V. Koenig, Bayville; his grandchildren, Gabriella, Samantha, Abigail, Emily, Cassandra, Jarrod, Heidi, Lance, Lorraine and Matthew; and his great-grandchildren, AnnaBea, Matthew and Cody.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Sea Girt. Entombment will follow in St. Catherine’s Mausoleum, Wall. Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.

Edward J. Donnelly

Sea Girt resident Edward J. Donnelly died Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Hunterdon Care Center, Flemington.

He was 86 years old.

Mr. Donnelly had lived in Sea Girt since 1953 until moving to his son’s house in Flemington in 2002. Born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark he graduated from Westside High School. Mr. Donnelly entered the U.S. Army in 1941, six months before Pearl Harbor, and served with the 649th Engineers in North Africa, France and Germany before he was honorably discharged in 1945. Mr. Donnelly entered the Steamfitters Local 475 in 1947 and worked out of the local until his retirement in 1982. Over the years he worked for a number of contractors including Chicago Bridge & Iron and Foster Wheeler. Mr. Donnelly was a coach in the Spring Lake/Sea Girt Little League and his team enjoyed several championships. He was a lifelong member of the White Eagles Athletic Club of Vailsburg Newark and a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, Sea Girt.

Mr. Donnelly was predeceased by his wife, Mary Stinson Donnelly in 1994; his parents, John C. Donnelly and Ellen Gilmore Donnelly; and his brother, William Donnelly.

He is survived by his son, John Donnelly, Flemington; his daughter, Catherine Donnelly, Sea Girt; his sister, Dorothy McClinchy, Florham Park; his four grandchildren, Tara Donnelly, Meghan Donnelly, Thomas Dunning and Michael Dunning; and his three great-grandchildren.

Marie R. Sherman

Reading, Mass. resident Marie R. Sherman, formerly of Manasquan, died Thursday, Feb. 16 at home in Reading where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Geert Leivens, and her grandchildren, Eva and Michael.

She was 90 years old.

Mrs. Sherman was born in Newark on Dec. 23, 1915, and was the daughter of the late Nicola and Maria [DiPaolo] Lorusso. She was a longtime resident of Manasquan, and an active member of Holy Trinity Church. Her contributions included serving as an officer of the church school, Sunday school teacher, and organizer of church events. Mrs. Sherman was instrumental in the church’s Care Corp providing bereavement support and in organizing support for women’s shelters. She volunteered in the public schools as well as, both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Her family knew her best as the host of regular family gatherings along with creativity in dressmaking, quilting, doll making and other fabric arts. Mrs. Sherman attended the First Congregational Church, Rowley. Her kind and generous nature endeared her to all she met at senior citizen groups, book and garden clubs. Mrs. Sherman’s home was filled with love and laughter so that her friends and family felt special and loved in her presence.

Marie was married for 47 years to the late M. Frank Sherman. Five years after he passed away, she moved to Massachusetts to live near her family. She was also predeceased by her sister, Josephine Zeron; and her brothers, Dominick, Anthony and Rocco Lorusso.

In addition to her family in Reading, Mass., she is survived by her daughters, Susan Sherman, Brookline, Mass., and Diane Sherman, Santa Rosa, Calf.; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lea Sherman, Hallandale Beach, Fla.; her grandsons, and their wives, Jake and Amy Flaherty, Lafayette, Calf., and Michael and Mari Flaherty, Park City, Utah; her great-grandchildren, Marea and Marc Flaherty; her sister, Angelina Ratcliff, Spring Lake Heights; her brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Mary Lorusso, Belmar; her two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law, Donald and Peg Sherman, State College, Pa., Richard and Mary Sherman, Wall Township, Janet Sherman, Brick Township, and Dorothy Lorusso, Dekalb, Ill.

The F.S. Roberts and Son Funeral Home, Rowley, Mass., was in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Ann Smith

Manasquan resident Patricia Ann Smith died Sunday, Feb. 12 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.

She was 47 years old.

Mrs. Smith grew up in Point Pleasant and later moved to Manasquan where she lived for 24 years. She was a devoted mother, wife and friend, who loved boating, fishing, golf, gardening, sewing and building her doll house, among countless other crafts and hobbies. Her early employment years were spent managing many fast-food restaurants. She then went on to waitress for 17 years at Union Landing Restaurant in Brielle.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her mother, Geraldine Carrino, and her father, William Baeder, III.

She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey G. Smith; her daughter, Heather Patrice Smith; her sisters, Geraldine Chadwick, Brick Township, and Eileen Adams, Shallotte, N.C.; her brothers, William Baeder, Manchester, Joseph Baeder, Brick; and many loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Mrs. Smith had a special affection for her dear friends, Kathy and Larry Schmidt, of Brielle.

Hannah Marie [nee McGrath] Phillips

Spring Lake Heights resident Hannah Marie [nee McGrath] Phillips, formerly of New York City, died Thursday, Feb. 16 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 77 years old.

Born and raised in New York City, Mrs. Phillips moved to Spring Lake Heights six years ago. She had been employed as a medical records clerk at New York Presbyterian Hospital, N.Y., before retiring in 1996.

Mrs. Smith was predeceased by her sister, Eileen Clancy, in 1984.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Desmond Thomas Phillips; her son, Thomas R., and his wife, Carol L., Spring Lake Heights; her daughter, Nancy Phillips, Sayville, N.Y.; her brother, Tom McGrath, Toms River; her sister, Mary Duke, Deptford; and her three grandchildren, Thomas, Laura and Nicole.

Francis J. Maguire

Sea Brook Village, Tinton Falls resident Francis J. Maguire, formerly of Sea Girt, died Saturday, Feb. 18 at Renaissance Gardens, Tinton Falls.

He was 92 years old.

Born and raised in Manhattan, N.Y., Mr. Maguire had lived in Sea Girt for 27 years before moving to Tinton Falls two years ago. He had been employed by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Manhattan, for 43 years, retiring in 1976. He had started his career out in the mail room and at the time of his retirement he was the Chief Underwriter. Mr. Maguire was a veteran of the Army National Guard, 7th Regiment, serving as a sergeant. While a resident of Manhattan, he was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and had sung in the choir there. Mr. Maguire was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, and was active in the Holy Name Society and Fire Department Auxiliary.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marian [nee Heslin] Maguire; his daughter, Marian Maguire Meuse; his sister, Catherine R. Murphy; and three grandchilren.
