Born in Newark, Mrs. Taylor was a life-long resident of the shore. She graduated from Asbury Park High School and held degrees from Montclair College and Rutgers University. A life-long teacher, her classroom instruction began in the Manasquan school system, where she taught on the high school level. Over the life of her educational career, Mrs. Taylor saw her first students, their children and even eventually their grandchildren of some of her students. Although Grace had no children of her own, she helped raise and influence three generations through education and by example. Eager to serve her country following the attack on Pearl Harbor, she began a 14-year Navy career in 1942, when she was commissioned an Ensign in the WAVES. Mrs. Taylor served as administrative officer in charge of the WAVES detachment and Aide to the Base Commander at various Naval Air Stations, including Daytona and Miami, Fla., and Lakehurst. Her last posting was at NAS Lakehurst. Mrs. Taylor was also one of only 288 women in the country to comprise the first group of women to receive commissions in the regular Navy and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander before retiring in 1949. Until her illness in late 2004, she remained in contact with many former Navy personnel. Mrs. Taylor served in the Naval Reserve for an additional six years while resuming her teaching career as Principle of Hurley School and later the Central School, Wall Township. Grace and her late husband, Harry, traveled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Canada and the United States. She was a member of the Sea Girt Fire Auxiliary, the Women’s Club of Sea Girt, the Sea Girt Beautification Committee and professionally, Delta Kappa Gamma.

“Aunt Grace,” as she was affectionately known to most, always had a smile for those she met and was a lady, never speaking ill of anyone, a rare trait in today’s world. She will be greatly missed, for she was a truly unique individual, greatly loved and respected.
