Mary Lee

Wall Township resident Mary Pulsifer Lee died Nov. 27 at the Tower Lodge Care Center, Wall.

She was 101.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Lee lived in Hillside, spring Lake Heights and Howell before moving to Wall Township three years ago. She was a school teacher for the Hillside Board of Education before retiring many years ago. Her late husband, Walter R. Lee, was the owner of the Lee Funeral Home in Hillside. Mary was the founder of the Junior Woman’s Club of Hillside, a member of the Hillside Presbyterian Church and the Manasquan Presbyterian Church, the South Monmouth County Senior Citizens Club and the Point. Pleasant Woman’s Club.

Mrs. Lee was predeceased by her husband in 1978.

She is survived by one son, Walter R. Lee Jr., and his wife, Lee McChesney Lee, Farmingdale; a grandson, Robin Bannatyne, and his wife, Margaret and their son, Jeremy; her step-son, W. Daniel McChesney, and his daughter, Amanda; nine nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as her adopted family, Wayne and Gal Zaycheck.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the St. Jude Hospital of the Monmouth County Visiting Nurse Hospice Association would be appreciated.

The Armitage Funeral Home, Wall Township, was in charge of the arrangements.

Margaret Strain

West Belmar resident Margaret Strain died Monday, Nov. 21 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, surrounded by her family.

She was 76 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Strain was a longtime resident of Belmar. Years ago, she was a supervisor for Duffy’s Electronics in Belmar. She was a member of the Union Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary in Belmar, AARP and the Pat Joyce Association and a communicant of the Church of St. Rose, Belmar.

Mrs. Strain was predeceased by her husband, Daniel L,. in 1969 and her son, Daniel, in 1996.

She is survived by two sons, Timothy J. Strain and Jack Strain, and his wife, Lois; three daughters, Peggy Ann and her husband, Joe DeFilippo, Kendall Park, Kathleen Strain and her fiancé, Michael, Hardyston, Jean Marie and her husband, Gary Pollack, with whom Mrs. Strain lived in West Belmar; her sister Jeanie Maloney, Pennsylvania; and a daughter-in-law, Rachael Strain. She was a devoted grandmother to Joey, Jeffrey, Christine, Adam, Krystal, Carol Ann, David, Pherrin, Richie, Katie, John, Bryan, Bryanna, Melanie and Kellyann. She is also survived by her dog, Rocky.

Visiting will be Friday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, Eighth Avenue and D Street, Belmar. The family will gather at the funeral home on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at the church of St. Rose, Belmar. Interment will follow in St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association, 1600 Rt. 22 East, Union, 07083 would be appreciated.

Dolores Parker

Spring Lake Heights resident Dolores A. O’Brien Parker died Saturday, Nov. 26 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York.

She was 72 years old.

Born in Jersey City, she was raised in Harrison, moved to Belmar in 1945, before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1994. Mrs. Parker was a civilian employee of the U.S. government at Ft. Monmouth as a technical specialist. For many years prior to this, she was a real estate agent in the shore area. Mrs. Parker attended Holy Cross School in Harrison and graduated from St. Rose High School, Belmar. She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s, Spring Lake, and of St. Rose, Belmar, for many years. Mrs. Parker was a volunteer in the thrift shop at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1977.

Mrs. Parker is survived by five sons, a daughter and their families: Kerry and Dee, Mendham, Kevin and Ulla, New York City, Christopher and Shannon, Weston, Conn., Bryan and Kathleen, Napa, Calif., George Parker and Karen Hui, Hoboken, and Kimberlee and Bill Conrad, Depere, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Caitlin, Brian, Erin, Liam, Owen, Ashley, Catherine, Caroline, Christopher Parker and Kirsten and Evan Conrad; and her aunt, Eleanor Chundak.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY, 10021 would be appreciated.

Merrill R. Killmon

Former Sea Girt resident Merrill R. Killmon died Thursday, Oct. 27 in Lake Placid, Fla..

He was 76 years old.

Mr. Killmon was a long time employee of Fritz Mueller of Mueller Brothers, Newark and Pennock Florists, Miami, Fla. He was also a longstanding member of the Sea Girt Volunteer Fire Company and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Manasquan.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Alyce Sherman Killmon, Lake Placid, Fla.; his three sons, M. Robert Killmon Jr., Vero Beach, Fla., David Killmon, Brielle, and Richard Killmon, Pompano Beach, Fla.; his two daughters, Sherry Killmon Michaels Hadden, Belmar, and Linda Killmon Ulrich, Vero Beach, Fla.; his ten grandchildren and his two brothers, Thomas Killmon, Hot Springs, Ark., and Donald Killmon, Nashua, N.H.

Ryan Christensen

Brick resident Ryan Douglas Christensen died on Thanksgiving at Medical University in South Carolina.

He was 22 years old.

Born in Neptune, Mr. Christensen lived in Freehold for three years before moving to Manasquan. He graduated from Spring Lake Heights Elementary School in 1997 and went to Manasquan High School. Mr. Christensen graduated from Monmouth County Adult Vocational School in 2002. He joined the Army in 2002. Mr. Christensen attended Basic Training at Fort Benning, Ga., then he went to signal school at Fort Gordon, Ga. and spent a year in Korea. In September, 2004, he went to Fort Stewart, Ga. before being deployed to Iraq in January, 2005. Mr. Christensen loved computers and video games. He was a very talented artist and had a wonderful sense of humor. Mr. Christensen was deeply loved by his family and will be missed by all.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, George and Mary Christensen, and his maternal grandfather, Charles Conner.

Mr. Christensen is survived by his stepfather and mother, Mark and Suzette Conner-Detulio, Brick; his father and stepmother, Cory and Judy Christensen, Staten Island; his great-grandmother, Daisy Switzer, Manasquan; his grandmother, Gladys Conner, Spring Lake Heights; his great-uncle, Harold Young, who served in the Navy for 25 years; his aunts and uncles, Carl and Ina Christensen, New Hope Pa., Kippy and Cindy Conner, Forked River, Pam and Ralph Musgrave, Spring Lake Heights, Mickey Conner, Flordia; and many cousins; Sean, Jessica, Diane, Samantha, Melyssa, Michael, Casey, Emma and Fiona. Mr. Christensen is also survived by many extended family and friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at O’Brien’s Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd., Brick. A mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, 3455 West Bangs Avenue, Neptune. Interment will follow at Saint Anne’s cemetery.

Forrest P. Anderson

Brandywine resident and former Jersey City, Manasquan, and Leisure Knoll resident, Forrest P. Anderson died Tuesday, July 4 at Laurleton Village, Brick.

He was 92 years old.

Known as Andy, he was born in Jersey City and lived in Manasquan and Leisure Knoll before moving to Brandywine. Mr. Anderson retired in 1984 from E & R Engineering and Refrigeration, Inc., Jersey City, where he worked for 35 years. He was previously employed by Western Electric for 11 and one-half years. An accomplished musician, he played the piano and vibes for 50 years. He also played for many years with the group “Three Tunes and a Vibe.” At Leisure Knoll he was a member of the Travel Club, serving as President for two years and Treasurer for eight years. He was a loving husband and a kind gentleman.

Son of the late Frank Cobb Anderson and Elizabeth Whitten Anderson, he was also predeceased by his son, James Anderson; brother, Frank Anderson, and sister, Etta Sturrock.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Janet Bowen Anderson; son, Donald Anderson; daughters, Virginia Flynn, Judy Citelli, and Susan Dame; stepdaughters, Bonnie Bollard and Donna Bollinger; nieces, Betty Jane Sturrock and Charlotte Reby; several grandchildren and greatgrandchildren also survive.

Catherine ‘Katie’ Amadruto

Spring Lake Heights resident Catherine ‘Katie’ Amadruto died Saturday, July 1 at home.

She was 83 years old.

Born and raised in New York City, she had been a resident of Spring Lake Heights for 58 years. Mrs. Amadruto was a real estate investor, owning several properties in the shore area. Widowed at a very early age, she raised her four children as a single parent. She was also a volunteer at the VNA Consignment Shop in Manasquan for 20 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Amadruto.

Surviving are her daughters and their husbands: Kathy and Craig Graham, Lucy and Norris Frost; sons, Frank Amadruto and his wife, Dianne, and George Amadruto; grandchildren, Denise O’Connell, Jamie Amadruto and Robyn Grant; great grandchildren, Cynthia, John and Mason O’Connell; and her sister, Irene Pappas.

Marjorie L. Patnaude

Wall Township resident Marjorie L. Patnaude entered into eternal life of our Lord Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 5 after a lengthy illness.

She was 91 years old.

Marjorie was born in the Glendola section of Wall, and had resided in Brielle before moving to Wall Township over 30 years ago. She was a Communicant of the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, Sea Girt, and was a member of the Old Wall Historical Society. Among her many interests in life was her love of her poodles and of music. This was demonstrated by her membership in the Monmouth Organ Society and the Metropolitan Opera Guild. She also had a deep devotion for her family and was known for her sweetness to children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Edward J. in 1971; her son, David L.; her grandson, Adam Patnaude; and her two sisters, Evelyn Mueller and Mildred Cowan.

Surviving are her children, Edward J. Jr. and his wife Barbara of Brielle, Carole and Jay Wickham of St. James City, Fla., Sharon Spagnolia of Wall, with whom she lived, and her daughter-in-law, Patricia Patnaude of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Lissa Wickham, Avery Gunther, Rhett Wickham, Marjorie Patnaude, Cheryl Saak, Aimee Ritter, Glenn Patnaude, and Stephanie Neuhaus; and five great grandchildren, Robert Mangold Jr., Alexis Shaak, Anjullee and Xian Gunther and Terry Borger; and her dedicated caretaker, Galyna Neskubina.

Margaret Boyle

Virginia and former Avon-by-the-Sea resident Margaret Mary Boyle [Peggy] died Monday, July 3 in her home.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Born Aug. 30, 1924 in Bayonne, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Mary Carson. She graduated with the ‘class of ‘42’ from Bayonne High and married James T. Boyle two years later. Mrs. Boyle worked for many years as a secretary in New York before beginning a long and happy career as a school secretary. Many children and their parents at Holy Trinity High School and Tamaques School in Westfield and H.W. Mountz School in Spring Lake, enjoyed Mrs. Boyle’s energy, humor, and kindness. Mr. and Mrs. Boyle raised their children in Westfield and subsequently resided in Avon-by-the-Sea, before moving to Richmond. Mrs. Boyle was an active participant and leader in many church and community groups wherever she lived, including the Rosary Society in Avon, where she served as a Regent of the Catholic Daughters of Americas, and in Richmond as a volunteer with Pastoral Care at St. Mary’s Hospital, a Eucharistic Minister at St. Bridget’s Church, and as a member of the Wellesley ‘49ers.’ Mrs. Boyle will be remembered fondly for her strong faith, her devotion to her family, her warm embrace of friends both old and new, her giving nature, and her zest for life. She is preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James T. Boyle.

She is survived by her son, James T. Boyle Jr. and his wife, Linda; her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Hansen and her husband; her five grandchildren; her brother, Donald Carson; and many loving family members and friends.

William J. ‘Sandy’ D’Elia Jr.

California and Vermont resident, former Spring Lake resident William J. ‘Sandy’ D’Elia Jr. died suddenly Monday, July 3 while running on a country road near his summer home in Vermont.

He was 59 years old.

Mr. D’Elia was born in New York City and raised in Spring Lake. He graduated from The Peddie School in Hightstown in 1965. Mr. D’Elia earned a BA in Journalism from Boston University in 1969 and and a BA in Architecture from the University of Idaho in 1976. He was co-author of “Advanced Marketing Techniques for Architects and Engineers,” a text used by professionals in the field, in 1990. Mr. D’Elia’s memberships included: Telegraph Hill Dwellers, San Francisco, Concerned Cavendish Citizens, Vt. and San Francisco Bay Club. His activities included: Escape from Alcatraz triathalon, Pallotta Team works AIDS vaccine ride through Montana of 521 miles in 2001, The Double Dipsea Run in 2006, was an expert skier, outdoorsman, outward bound participant, participated in the Wildflower Triathalon in Santa Cruz, and travelled widely in pursuit of his adventures. The diversity of Mr. D’Elia’s creative endeavors ranged from performing leading roles in Summer Stock Theatre in Vt., to presenting insightful, timely political critique. His musical tastes ran from opera to rock and roll to rendering from memory Cole Porter lyrics with enthusiasm and gusto.

Mr. D’Elia was predeceased by his father, William J. D’Elia MD and his mother, Agnes [Gillespie] D’Elia; his sister, Janet Power and brother, Hugh D’Elia.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Marcia A. Packlick; and his nieces, Leslie Tarala, Burlington, N.C., Amy Power, Maputo, Mozambique, Christine Power, Belmar, and four grandnieces and two grand nephews.

An expression of sympathy memorial contributions may be made to the Concerned Cavendish Citizens, P.O. Box 605, Cavendish, Vt. 05142.

A celebration of Sandy’s life will be held in San Francisco on Friday, Aug. 11 at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio from 5 to 8 p.m.

Alice G. Watts

Wall Township resident Alice G. Watts died Saturday, July 8 at Sunnyside Manor.

She was 93 years old.

Miss Watts was employed by the Wall Township Board of Education as a secretary to Mr. John Gasparini at the Allenwood School for 27 years. Born in Manasquan, she lived most of her life in Manasquan and Wall Township, before moving to the Arbors in Spring Lake Heights, where she enjoyed her friends and the wonderful staff. She was a graduate of Manasquan High School and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manasquan. She was a good friend and a wonderful neighbor and will be remembered for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.

Miss Watts is predeceased by her sisters: Dora Watts King and Myrtle Watts.

Frank Mihlon

West Palm Beach Fla. resident , formerly of Belmar, Frank Mihlon, passed away on July 9 in Florida.

He was 89 years old.

Mr. Mihlon was the Founder of the first volunteer First Aid Squad in the U.S.A. He was born on March 17, 1917 in Newark. Frank Mihlon, a Mechanical and Professional Engineer with an additional degree in Naval Architecture and Celestial Navigation. He was a 1939 graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology. Frank Mihon was the aeronautical engineer at Glen L. Martin in Baltimore, Md. and was U.S. Army Electronic Command Leader, at Fort Monmouth. After retiring in 1972, Frank Mihlon remained active in the communities of Belmar and West Palm Beach. In Belmar, he was on the Board of Trustees at the Belmar Public Library. Frank Mihlon was a member of the Deal Country Club, Green Gables Croquet Club, Palm Beach Croquet Club, Beach Club Croquet Club, Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club, Shark River Yacht Club, and was a member of the Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach. In the summer of 1926, when Frank Mihlon was 9 years old, he and his father established the first volunteer First Aid Squad in New Jersey and the U.S.A. The formation of the Belmar First Aid Squad is considered the nation’s granddaddy of volunteer first aid squads.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Margaret Louis Mihlon and their three children: Marlene Reddington, Fla., Merilee Anderson, Chatham, and Frank Mihlon the III, New Orleans, La; he is also survived by six grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will take place in early August at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Belmar First Aid Squad, Belmar, 07719. Arrangements are under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Madeline Marie Laus

Freehold resident, formerly of Manasquan Madeline Marie Laus died Saturday, July 8 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold.

She was 85 years old.

Mrs. Laus had been employed as a Nurse at Palisades General Hospital, West New York, prior to moving to Manasquan. She had the distinction of graduating from nursing school at the age of 50 and finishing first in her class. She was a Communicant of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church, Manasquan. Mrs. Laus had lived in Fairview from 1967 until moving to Manasquan 20 years ago where she resided until moving to Freehold five years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Captain Dominik Laus on July 9, 2000 and two sisters, Anne Woods and Grace Danish.

Surviving is her son, Richard, Middletown; two daughters, Patricia Laus, Sea Girt and Christine Nadino, Tinton Falls; a sister, Josephine Guarcello, Sea Girt; six grandchildren, Richard, Christopher, and Steven Surgent, Carolyn Surgent-Friedman, Christine Las and Anthony Nadino; and nine great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, 3300 Hwy 66, Neptune, 07753. O’Brien Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
