Alfred Charles Casagrande

Spring Lake resident Alfred Charles Casagrande passed away Sunday, July 9 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 93 years old.

Born in Belmar, Fred was raised in Spring Lake. He graduated from H.W. Mountz Grammar School and Asbury Park High School in 1932, where he played basketball, football, and baseball on championship teams. Fred graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1936 with a BS in Chemistry. While attending college he was a member of Alpha Phi Delta and played basketball and baseball. Fred owned and operated Casagrande Liquor Store on Third Avenue, Spring Lake, from 1934 to the present. He enjoyed the work and the people so much that he never retired.

He is predeceased by his son, Stephen Charles Casagrande in 2003; and his son-in-law, John B. Coltrane Jr., in 1982.

Fred is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marjorie Bonk Casagrande; and his children, five daughters and four sons: Joan C. Coltrane, Covington, Tenn., A. Eugene and Theresa Styslinger Casagrande, Spring Lake Heights, Helen and Lyman Spalding, Fair Haven, Eleanor and Michael Handerhan, West Palm Beach, Fla., Charles L. and Kathleen Mimnaugh Casagrande, Spring Lake, Paul T. Casagrande, Spring Lake Heights, Marjorie A. Casagrande, Palm Springs, Calif., Christine and Victor Musto, West Deal, and Peter J. and Jane Palughi Casagrande, Wall Township; thirty grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Fred is also survived by two sisters, Delzie C. Cheek, Scottsville, Va., and Helen C. Raffetto, Spring Lake; and his loving aunts, Helen M. Casagrande, Fair Haven, and Jeanette C. Casagrande, Fla.; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements.

Bonnie Grace Dickson

Sea Girt resident Bonnie Grace Dickson, died Friday, June 23 while snorkeling in Loblolly Bay, Anegada, British Virgin Islands.

She was 51 years old.

Born in Neptune, she resided in Manasquan before moving to Sea Girt in 1965. Ms. Dickson resided in both Sea Girt, and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Ms. Dickson graduated from Manasquan Elementary School and Manasquan High School. She attended Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.

She had been employed by Dickson Supply Company, Brielle, for many years.

Her heart was full of life, laughter, generosity and love. She enjoyed traveling, bicycling, boating and swimming.

Her father, Allan J. Dickson, died in 1987, and her nephew, Trevor Dickson, died in 2005.

She is survived by two loving children, Rob and Heather; her mother, Grace B. Dickson of Sea Girt; her brother and sister-in-law, Allan J. and Margaret Dickson of Manasquan; a niece, Abbey Holloway, of Wall Township; an aunt and uncle; cousins, and countless wonderful friends.

A memorial service is being planned. Local arrangements are under direction of the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Clifford Greenwald

Wall Township resident Clifford Greenwald died Wednesday, June 21 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 82 years old.

He was born at the Anna May Hospital, Spring Lake, and grew up in Five Points, Allenwood.

Mr. Greenwald graduated from Manasquan High School and attended Montclair State Teachers College before going into the Army Air Corps where he spent his tour of duty on Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, during World War II.

After returning from service, he attended Montclair State Teachers College and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in education. He received his master’s degree from Columbia University and took additional graduate courses at Rutgers University.

Before retiring from education in 1987, Mr. Greenwald served as the assistant superintendent of curriculum and director of special education for the Berkeley Heights School District for 19 years. He began his educational career as a teacher in the Manasquan Elementary School and Wall Township Central School, prior to serving as the teaching principal of Hurley School, Wall Township, and a teaching principal and superintendent of the Spring Lake Heights Elementary School for six years, and superintendent of the Deal Borough Elementary School for 10 years.

He was a lifetime member of the NJEA, NEA, and NJRTEA. He also was a member of the Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development, the Elementary Principals Association, the Association for School Administrators and many other professional education organizations.

Mr. Greenwald had been an active and supportive member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving on several committees during that time, and as a Sunday school teacher for 15 years. In retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, furniture refinishing, gardening and spending winters in Plant City, Fla.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Charles and Etta Greenwald; a brother, Russell; and a sister, Estelle MacMahon.

Surviving members of his loving family are his devoted wife of 56 years, Jane Wellington Greenwald; a daughter, Susan Greenwald Gilbert and her husband, Darren, Spring Lake; a son, Thomas Greenwald and his wife Jill, Little Silver; and four adoring grandchildren, Colette and Grant Gilbert, and Georgiana and Thomas Greenwald, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Fourth and West Lake Avenues, Spring Lake, 07762.

Sharon A. Niles

Wall Township resident Sharon A. Niles died Friday, June 23 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 63 years old.

She was a medical assistant for Dr. David Cheli in Manasquan until her passing. Born in Rockville Center, Long Island, she grew up in Utica, N.Y. while summering in Maine before getting married and moving to Deal to raise her family and then to Wall Township where she resided for the past 20 years.

She was a beloved, loving, beautiful, kind mother, grandmother, sibling and friend. Sharon touched the lives of all around her with love, light, and generosity. As a great humanitarian, cancer survivor and advocate for the American Cancer Society, Sharon was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. Her dedication and love for her family was exhibited in all she did. She loved life, the outdoors, the arts, biking, reading, laughing, animals, gardening, winning every trivia game, and most of all, spending time with family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Giunta, in 1987 and by her former companion, William Terry, in 2000.

She is survived by her sons, Anthony J. Giunta, Wall Township and Vincent Giunta, Middletown; her daughters, Carmela J. Cammalleri, Tewksbury, and Andrea Claire Giunta, Manhattan. She also leaves her sister, Joan Harris, Loveland, Colo.; and three grandchildren, Cassandra, Jillian and Haley. She will be deeply missed and we will carry her in our hearts and thoughts forever. To the greatest mom, we love you. May God continue to bless you always as you rest in peace.

Charles E. Straus

Belmar resident Charles E. Straus died Friday, June 23 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 83 years old.

Born in Jersey City, he moved to Belmar in 1972. Mr. Straus was a member of St. Rose Church, the American Legion, Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, and C.C.C. Camps. He worked for New Jersey State Highway Authority as a bridge tender on the Route 35 bridge.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Cecilia, in 1964, and his second wife, Mary.

Surviving are his son, William, Belmar; a nephew, Mark Conlon, Lambertiville; and two nieces, Maureen Walker, Mendham and Patricia Elkoury, Westfield.

Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, handled the arrangements.

Nancy L. Griggs

Lakewood resident Nancy L. Groff Griggs, formerly of Sea Girt, died Saturday, June 24, peacefully in her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Griggs was born in Lakewood. She was a graduate of Rider Business College in Lawrenceville. She was employed as a secretary for 25 years with the Howell Township Board of Education, Howell, retiring in 1983.

Mrs. Griggs was a former parishioner of St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church, Sea Girt. She was an avid bridge player who enjoyed travel, sailing, knitting, cooking and the beach. She was a loving wife and grandmother.

Mrs. Griggs was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Theron C. Griggs, in 1997.

She is survived by a daughter, Michele G. Barth and her husband Robert C., Point Pleasant; a brother, Ret. 1st Sgt., USMC William S. Groff Jr. and his wife, Roxanne, Manchester; two grandchildren, Melissa A. Fitzpatrick and Christopher R. Barth; two great-grandchildren, Haleigh and Jack; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service will be held today, 10 a.m. at O’Brien Funeral Home, Burnt Tavern Road, Brick. Burial will follow at Woodlawn cemetery in Lakewood. A special thanks to Sidi Saliu and Debbie Kenyon for their wonderful care and devotion throughout her final days.

Herbert F. Strucek Jr.

Brielle resident Herbert F. Strucek Jr. died Friday, June 23 in his residence.

He was 85 years old.

Born in Woodside, N.Y., he was an Army veteran of World War II attaining the rank of sergeant. Herb served as the bandmaster of the 396th MP Battalion Band at Fort Riley, Kan. He later served as a surgical technician at the Lawson General Hospital in Atlanta. He returned to Fort Riley to continue his service as an M.P. [C.I.D.] and concluded service there as a chaplain’s assistant in 1945.

Earning credentials in music and internal combustion engineering, he became a professional engineer, licensed in Wisconsin, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania. He worked for Fairbanks, Morse and Co. of Beloit, Wis. as an erecting engineer and international service manager. Moving on to P&H Diesel Engines of Crystal Lake, Ill., he was involved in the development of prototype diesel engines. He retired from GPU Energy [JCP&L Co.] after 20 years.

A founding member of the Brielle First Aid Squad, Inc., he was also a charter member of the Union Landing Historical Society as well as a commissioner of the Monmouth County Historical Commission. He co-founded the Marbleheaders of Spring Lake Model Yacht Club. He was a life member of The American Legion Post 432, Spring Lake, as well as the National Rifle Association. He served on the board of directors of The Boys Club of Monmouth County. He was twice Past Master of Wall Spring Lake Lodge No. 73 F.& A.M.

A lifelong Lutheran, he was a member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manasquan, sine 1958. He served the church in a variety of capacities, including Stephen’s Minister leader, Assisting Lay Minister, senior choir, Kings Ringers, Social Ministry committee co-chair and Church Council member. He also served as Scoutmaster of Troop 75 BSA, earning the Wood Badge.

Mr. Strucek Jr., was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Helen Blomberg Strucek, who was a Kansas Probate Judge before she became the Brielle Deputy Borough Clerk. Also, two sons predeceased him, Herbert F. III and Walter Jay; and a grandson, David Scott.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Myra Strucek; a granddaughter, Katelyn and a grandson, Andrew; and a host of dear relatives and friends.

Mary E. Rogers Andrews

Wall Township resident Mary E. Rogers Andrews died Tuesday, June 20 in Church of the Brethren Home, Winbur.

She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Andrews was born in Freehold and was raised and educated in the Belmar area. She resided in Brick for several years before moving to Pennsylvania. She worked as a seamstress for Monmouth Awning Company, Asbury Park, until her retirement in 1980.

She was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Katherine Cray Rogers; her husband, Harold Andrews; a son, Arthur; a daughter, Katherine Hammock; and a brother, Arthur R. Rogers.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Irene Andrews; and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by McDonough Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Cornelia Hurley

Brick resident Cornelia Elizabeth McGarry Hurley, formerly of Spring Lake, died Tuesday, Aug. 1 in her residence.

She was 76 years old.

Mrs. Hurley was a self-employed business owner who had retired in 1990. She was a former member of the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce and had volunteered her time at the VNA in Manasquan.

She was a communicant of the Church of St. Martha in Point Pleasant. Born and raised in New York City, N.Y., she lived in Upper Montclair and Spring Lake before moving to Brick in 1995.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Owen J. McGarry, in 1983; by her second husband, William T. Hurley, in 1992; by her brother, Robert Melaniff in 1975; and by her sister, Margaret Liebrecht in 2000.

She is survived by her son, Kieran McGarry of Point Pleasant; her granddaughter, Sara Noelle Eng; and many nieces and nephews.

Thomas Magovern

Normandy Beach resident Thomas John Magovern, whose sister lives in Lake Como, died Tuesday, Aug. 1 in Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morristown.

He was 74 years old.

Mr. Magovern had been employed as a banker with the Columbia Saving Bank, Fairlawn. Prior to this, he had been employed with North East Savings Bank, Hartford, Conn. and Summit Bank, Cranford. He had also worked for City Federal Savings Bank for 17 years and had worked on the financing project for the Sands Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City.

He was also a member of the Berkley Heights Planning Board. He was also a board member of Meditrust and Care Matrix, Boston, Mass.

Born in Newark, he had lived in Berkley Heights from 1977 until moving to Normandy Beach four years ago.

He was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving is his daughter, Kristen, of Normandy Beach; his former wife, Karen, of Summit; his sister, Margaret Cummings, of Lake Como; and his brother, John J. Magovern III, of Bluebell, Pa.; his faithful canine companion, Buffy; and his four nephews.

Mae A. Allis

Wall Township resident Mae A. Allis [nee Ferrara] died Sunday, July 30 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 80 years old.

Born in Adelphia, she lived in Bronx, N.Y. before moving here six years ago.

Mae took interest in various hobbies, loved to cook, sew, and knitting, and was a loyal supporter of the Disabled Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was a member of the Hwy. 35 Tuesday a.m. ladies league, and was a poll worker with the Monmouth County Board of Elections. Mae was a secretary with Exquisite Form clothing and ladies apparel.

She is survived by her sons, Anthony [Buddy] and his wife, Joanne of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Richard and his wife, Mary Anne of Tuckahoe, N.Y.; her daughters, Dale Hill of Wall, Denise Galante of Brewster, N.Y.; her brother, Ralph Ferrara; her sister, Camille Franco; and her loving grandchildren, Nicholas Hill, Jeffrey Hill, Samantha Petersen, Christina Petersen and Scott Galante.

Her husband, Anthony “Sonny,” died in 2002.
