Edward A. Reilly, Jr.

Neptune resident Edward A. Reilly, Jr. died Tuesday, Nov. 28 surrounded by his loving family.

He was 83 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Reilly moved to Neptune in 1957. He graduated from St. Peter Prep, Jersey City, in 1941. He attended Villanova University, Pa., for two years before enlisting in the Army. He served with the 101st airborne during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After being honorably discharged, he graduated from Rutgers University and received his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers in 1951.

He was the exalted ruler of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 121 in Newark, Past Commander of Goodfellowship Post 189 of the American Legion, past president of Neptune and Ocean Kiwanis and a member and communicant of Holy Innocents Church.

Mr. Reilly was Neptune Democratic Executive Chairman for 40 years and very instrumental in coordinating Functions for the Monmouth County Democratic Party and was known for running Neptune’s annual Democratic Picnics.

In his extensive law career, he served as assistant prosecutor for Monmouth County, Prosecutor for Sea Bright, attorney for Neptune Township, attorney for Neptune Sewerage Authority and assistant County Counsel at the time of his demise.

He was predeceased by his parents, Edward A. Sr. and Rose M. Reilly; son, Edward A. III, Esq.; daughter, Maureen Reilly Turano; brother, John J. Reilly; and son-in-law, Donnie Daughton.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Bette; son, Patrick and his wife, Dana, Springfield, Va.; seven daughters, Susan Bertram, Fla.; Margaret and her husband, John Vagnetti, Va.; Barbara Daughton, Wall; Michele and her husband, Harvey Jones, Voorhees; Elizabeth and her husband, Richard Galterio, Morganville; Laura and her husband, Dale Bramhall, Avon; Mary Jo and her husband, Guy Rogers, Neptune; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

George Klapproth

Belmar resident George Klapproth died Tuesday, Nov. 28 in his home.

He was 78 years old.

Born in Irvington, he remained a life long resident of Belmar. Mr. Klapproth was employed as a maintenance worker with the Belmar Public Works Department from 1956 until his retirement in 1984.

A friendly and familiar figure, Mr. Klapproth was a member of the New Jersey Civil Employees Association No. 9 of the Monmouth Council. He was also an avid model builder and fisherman who enjoyed mastering and assembling complex puzzles.

The son of the late William P. Klapproth and Eleanor [Geinsa] Klapproth, he is survived by two brothers, William Klapproth, Jackson, and Robert Klapproth, Ill.; and one sister, Eleanor Castleton, Edison; in addition to his nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall.

Jonathan W. Winters

Manasquan resident Jonathan W. Winters died Thursday, Nov. 30 at Burnt Tavern Nursing and Rehab, Brick.

He was 94 years old.

Born in West Pittston, Pa., Mr. Winters resided in Spring Lake Heights before moving to Manasquan 26 years ago.

Mr. Winters worked in the finance department of the Loew’s Corporation, New York City, retiring in 1979 after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Republican Club of Manasquan and attended the First Baptist Church of Manasquan.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Muriel W. Winters; one daughter, Jayne Lahr, Manasquan; two grandsons and their spouses, Richard and Lisa Lahr, Jonathan and Stacie Lahr; and three great grandchildren, Corinne, Dylan and Brooke.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, 180 Newman Springs Road, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

Daniel Thomas Day

Former Wall resident Daniel Thomas Day died Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the home of his devoted companion, Maryann Heinz-Hinz, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous five-year battle with melanoma.

He was 55 years old.

Daniel Thomas Day was a current resident of Brick. He was born in Neptune and raised in Wall. He was a 1970 graduate of Monmouth County Vocational Technical and Wall High School.

He was a gifted auto technician and owned Dan’s Auto and Marine Service, Rt. 34, Wall, formerly Broadway, Point Pleasant Beach. He was a former communicant of St. Denis R.C. Church, Manasquan. Dan enjoyed ocean fishing from his boat, the “Happy Day’s.” He was an avid NASCAR and Dallas Cowboys fan.

Surviving are his beloved sons, Justin and Ryan Day, Neptune; his parents, Norman and Ruth Day, Brick; his brothers, sisters and their spouses, William and Loraine Day, Allentown, Timothy and Nancy Day, Brick, Carolyn and Jack Augustensen, Lakewood, Judith and John Eldridge, Manchester and Nancy and James Myers, Howell; his nephews and nieces, Jason Lamb, Michael and Kevin Day, Jaclyn Augustensen, Jennifer and Amy Eldridge Dan will be greatly missed by his aunts, uncles and many cousins and friends.

Funeral arrangements were arranged by the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Cancer Institute of New Jersey Foundation, c/o Carolyn Augustensen, 1677 Hidden Lane, Lakewood, NJ 08701. Your kind donations will be used to fund and support melanoma at CINJ.

William J. Clarke

Spring Lake Heights resident William J. Clarke died Friday, Dec. 1 at the Neptune Rehab and Convalescent Center, Neptune, after a lengthy illness.

He was 82 years old.

Mr. Clarke was born and raised in Jersey City. He attended St. Aloysius High School, Jersey City, and graduated from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

He served with honor in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He raised his family in Ringwood before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1990. Mr. Clarke was employed by the National Cash Register Company for 35 years as a Cash Register Sales Representative in New York City and, later, as Sales Manager in the branch offices of Patterson and Newburgh, N.Y., until his retirement in1985.

He was a member of the Fairway Mews Golf Association in Spring Lake Heights and the Countryside Golf and Country Club in Naples, Fla.

Mr. Clarke was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Mary Clarke. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Marie Dourigan Clarke; and his four daughters, Marie Eileen and Fred Fastiggi, Brielle, Patricia Clark, Spring Lake Heights, Jeanette and Ed Kluckowski, Winchester, Va., and Ellen and Brian McManus, Wall. He is also survived by his brother, Martin Clarke, Salem, Mass.; cousin, Mary and Joseph Serzan, Cranford; his nephew, John and Nichole Clarke, Salem, Mass.; brother-in-law and best friend, Joseph Dourigan and his wife Marian, Naples, Fla.; and his many cousins in Dublin and Kiltimagh, County Mayo, Ireland; and his ten loving grandchildren, Glynnis and Christopher Fastiggi, Megan, Jack and Kevin Mulligan, Joseph and James Kluckowski, and Jillian, Kyle and Jake McManus.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Catherine O’Callaghan

Former Spring Lake resident Catherine G. O’Callaghan died Thursday, Nov. 23 in Glens Falls, N.Y.

Born and raised in New York City, she lived in Yonkers and East Hampton, N.Y., before moving to Lakewood in 1994 and then to the Arbors, Spring Lake Heights.

She was a beautiful, dignified woman, much loved by her family and friends. She was an avid crad player and opera lover. She participated in volunteer work, especially teaching adults to read.

She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick F. O’Callaghan; and her grandson, Danny O’Callaghan, She is survived by her sons, Kevin O’Callaghan, Milwaukee, Wis., Neil and his wife, Kate O’Callaghan, Berlin, Md. Also surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Aileen and Norm Lange, Media, Pa., Cathy and Scott Abercrombie, Brielle, Clare O’Callaghan, Washington, D.C., Rose O’Callaghan, Glens Falls, N.Y., and Margaret and Bob Rocco, New Fairfield, Conn.

Her grandchildren include Liz and Doug Jacoby, Kate, Aileen and Clare Abercrombie, Sara and Tony Thibodeau, Patrick and Amy O’Callaghan, Irene and Sam Suhaka, Brianne and Lauren Dorgan; and her great grandson, Andy Jacoby.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake, on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant House, P.O. Box 731, Times Square Station, NY, NY 10108.

Donald Ardis Jr.

Former Manasquan resident Donald Wayne Ardis, Jr. died Saturday, Nov. 30 in his home.

He was 30 years old.

Mr. Ardis was a carpenter working for New Jersey Carpenters and Joiners Union, Local 620 in Madison. He was born in Columbia, S.C., grew up in Sumter, S.C., and lived in Mobile, Ala., Manasquan, North Brunswick, Princeton Junction and Haddonfield before moving to Philadelphia, Pa., eight months ago.

He was predeceased by his father, Donald Wayne Ardis, Sr. in 2004. Surviving are his wife of nine years, Jessica Anne [Renk]; sons, Bradley Michael and John Maximillion Ardis; mother, Sandy Mixon; maternal grandmother, Travis Mixon; brother, Jonathan Treaster; and sisters, April Haskell and Crystal Treaster, Sumter, S.C.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Marie Casagrande

Former Avon resident Marie “Mickey” Casagrande died Friday, Dec. 1 in her Neptune City residence.

A life long resident of the Jersey Shore, she lived in Neptune, Avon and Asbury Park before settling in Neptune City.

Mrs. Casagrande was the owner of Casagrande Market and Liquor Store in Avon. The Market has been in the family since 1921. Originally owned by her in-laws, it is presently operated by the third generation.

She was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon, and a member of the Altar Rosary Society.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles A., in 2001 and a son, Mark, in 2000.

Surviving are a son, Charles A., Jr., Neptune City; and two daughters, Judy, Neptune City, and Terry, Richmond, Va.

Funeral arrangements were provided by the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Avon First Aid Squad would be appreciated.

Diane Rafferty

Former Belmar resident, Diane Daughton Rafferty, died Saturday, Dec. 2 at the home of her sister, Erin Rice, Wall.

She was 47 years old.

Mrs. Rafferty worked as an office manager for the Zinsser Corporation in Somerset. She traveled to different states on behalf of Bayer Pharmaceuticals to help find a cure for renal cancer. She also spoke in front of Congress to help get funding for the research of this disease.

Diane graduated from Belmar Elementary School, Asbury Park High School and Stuart’s Business School, Wall. She was a communicant of Saint Rose RC Church, Belmar, and Holy Innocents RC Church, Neptune. Born in Neptune, Diane lived in Belmar and Matawan before moving to Keyport five years ago.

Diane is survived by her husband, Martin; and son, RJ Daughton; her mother and stepfather, Helen and Rich Taggart; her siblings, Kelly and Alan Sherman, Pat Daughton, Erin and Jim Rice, Kevin and Leigh Daughton; eight nieces and nephews; her mother and father-in-law, Mae and Danny Rafferty; many relatives in Belfast, Ireland; and her best friend, Molly. She is predeceased by her father, Donald Daughton.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D Street, Belmar, on Thursday, Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Innocents RC Church, Neptune, at 10 a.m. Cremation will be held privately.

Bernard Jeffrey Morris

Wall resident Bernard Jeffrey Morris, “Jeff” to all who knew him, died suddenly Monday, Dec. 4 in his home.

Born in Plainfield and raised in Spring Lake, he had lived in Avon and Toms River before moving to Wall Township 12 years ago.

He was a graduate of Christian Brother Academy, Lincroft, and St. Michael’s College, Vermont. He was currently the President of the Shark River Surf Anglers Club. Jeff was also instrumental in the Shark River Kids Trout Tournament. Spring Lake. His enthusiasm for kids was well known and shared in the fishing community. Jeff had earned the honor of Eagle Scout as a younger man. He has now “Gone Fishing” for the final time and checked out with a Full House.

He was predeceased by his father, Robert Roy Morris; surviving is his wife of 22 years, Lynn McMullen Morris; his mother, Mrs. Joan Daly Morris, Wall; his brother, Chad Morris and his wife, Bonnie, Brielle; his nieces and nephews, Alicia, John and Kiersten Morris and Sarah and Erynn Quirk; and many close friends and fishing buddies.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday, Dec. 7 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. followed by a Funeral Service on Friday, Dec. 8 at 11:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall. Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Shark River Surf Anglers Childrens Trout Tournament, 2167 Gregory Place, Sea Girt, 08750.

Elisabeth R. Dubac

Spring Lake resident Elisabeth [Elsy] R. Dubac died Wednesday, April 12 peacefully in her home.

She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Dubac was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, and came to the United States when she was 18. With her husband Francis, she owned and operated the Deauville Inn Restaurant originally located on 18th Avenue [current site of Wall High School] and later on Gully Road in Glendola for 49 years. She was a longtime communicant of St. Margaret’s Church and was a former member of the Alter and Sewing Guild.

Mrs. Dubac was predeceased by her husband Francis in 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Elsie Dubac, of Spring Lake, and Jeannette and her husband, John Strain, of Wall. Also surviving are one sister, Margrith Baumwart, of Switzerland; three grandchildren, Michael Strain, of Kentucky, William Strain and his wife Danielle, of Bayville, and Joanne Strain, of Wall; four great-grandchildren, Alexandra,Victoria, Ashley, and Nicole; her nephew, John Bixler, and his two sons Michael and Brian, of Toms River; a niece, Julie Chytrowski, and her husband Alan, of Florida. Mrs. Dubac will be deeply missed by many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements were handled by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

R. Lois Gleason

Former Brielle resident, R. Lois Gleason died Wednesday, April 12 at Ocean Medical Center, in Brick.

She was 76 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, she lived in Brielle for 29 years before coming to the Four Seasons in Lakewood recently.

Mrs. Gleason was predeceased by her parents, Ruth Nilsen-Gilden and Clifford Nilsen; and her brothers, Clifford, Roger, and Warren Nilsen.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Thomas P. Gleason; her sons, Thomas C., Kevin M. and Sean P. Gleason, and his wife, Debra; her daughter Eileen A. Gleason; her grandchildren, Brianna, Kelly Holmes, Conor, Jack, and Mary; and her great-grandchildren, Shane and Aiden.

In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Manasquan Elk’s National Veterans Fund, 17 Stockton Lake Boulevard, Manasquan. Arrangements were handled by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Nicholas Salvatore Zavardino

Bradley Beach resident Nicholas Salvatore Zavardino died April 14 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, after a brief illness.

He was 80 years old.

Born and raised in Hoboken, Mr. Zavardino had lived in Bradley Beach for the past 35 years. He had been employed in the maintenance department for the Borough of Bradley Beach for over 20 years before retiring in 1991. He had also worked for the Asbury Park Press and at Maxwell House, Hoboken, for over 20 years. He was a very religious man and a communicant of the Church of the Ascension, Bradley Beach, and prior to this he was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Hoboken, where he had volunteered many hours of his time to help the church.

Mr. Zavardino was predeceased by his wife, Lucy V. Francone Zavardino in September 2005; his daughter, Anna N. Falco in December 1997; and two sisters, Anna Mancuso and Natalie Petrosino.

Surviving are his devoted daughter, Mary Zavardino, of Bradley Beach, with whom he lived; and his sister, Rosalie Addeo, Hoboken.

Funeral service Thursday, April 20 at 9:15 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Ascension.
