Frank R. Lee

Neptune resident Frank R. Lee died Sunday, Feb. 18 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall.

He was 77 years old.

Born in Asbury Park, he remained a lifelong resident of the shore area.

A veteran of the military, Mr. Lee was a Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force. Following his discharge, he was employed by the Allied-Bendix Generator Company of Eatontown for 39 years as a supervisor.

The son of the late Franklin Lee and Lillian Johnson Lee, Mr. Lee was also predeceased by his grandson Brian Edward Morris in 1988.

Surviving is his wife Marie Consolatore Lee of Neptune; his children Edward Robertson and his wife Linda of Florida, Donna Morris and her husband Dale of Beachwood, Linda Hampel and her husband Hans of Neptune, Peggy Lee Hazard and her husband Todd of Wall, Nancy Lee Berube and her husband Danny of Wall, Terry Lee Keyton and her husband Martin of Wall, and Judy Lee Braybander and her husband Ernie of North Carolina.

Also surviving are his 12 beloved grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home in Wall, with a religious service by Fr. Daniel of Our LAdy of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mr. Lee can be made to the Cardiac Care Unit of Jersey Shore University Medical Center, P.O. Box 1064, Neptune, NJ 07754.

Emily Newsham Scott

Manasquan resident Emily Newsham Scott, formerly of Kearny and Forked River, died Monday, Feb. 12, at Sunnyside Manor in Wall Township.

She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Scott was born in England, and she came to the U.S.A. as an infant and lived in East Newark. She was raised in Kearny and retired to Forked River. She was a member of the North Reformed Church in Newark. She will be missed by all.

Mrs. Scott is predeceased by her husband Alexander Scott and her sister Anne Forbes.

Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Marlyn and Mark Heinze of Manasquan; grandchildren Jeffrey and Mariellen Heinze of Wall and Jayne and Rick Niau of Kamuela, Hawaii.

A private funeral service will be held at the Br. General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial cemetery in Arneytown.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia C. Bogdan

Spring Lake resident Virginia C. Bogdan died peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 17 at her home in Spring Lake.

Born in Nutley, she had lived in Jersey City before moving to Spring Lake in 1977. She was a daily Communicant of St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. She was a graduate of Barringer High School and Newark Normal School.

Virginia’s family and teaching career were the most important pillars of her life. By her shining example she molded the lives not only of her own children, but also 100’s of future adults placed in her charge. She taught the students of Jersey City Public Schools for over 25 years.

“Babcia” (to all who knew her) inspired a deep faith, hope, and trust in God. She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Msgr. Thomas U. Reilly Council, Knights of Columbus in Spring Lake and also a member of the Woman’s Club of Spring Lake.

She was predeceased by her parents Teofila and Zygmunt Rozwadowski, her husband Stanly P. Bogdan in 1971, her son-in-law Henry F. Herbermann and her great- granddaughter Bridget Bogdan.

Surviving are her children Dr. Joseph C. and his wife Daphne Bogdan, and her daughter Barbara Herbermann, all of Spring Lake; grandchildren and spouses Drs. Joseph P. and Lori Bogdan, Doreen M. and Jesus Martin, Henry C. and Natalie Herbermann, Greg and Kelly Bogdan, Robert and Tracy Bogdan, and Maj. Justin and Devon Herbermann, and 13 great grandchildren David, Brittany, Patrick, Mayra, Luke, Matthew, Jack, Cecilia, Ana, Alex, Santi, Joseph, and Grant.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 9:30am at St. Margaret’s RC Church, Corner of 3rd and Ludlow Ave. in Spring Lake.

Private burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Middletown. Arrangements are under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd. in Wall.

Neil R. Carman

Manasquan resident Neil R. Carman died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, Feb. 11, at the home of his life-long friends, Bill and Pat Springer, while vacationing in Florida.

He was 73 years old.

Born in Somerville, he previously resided in Bound Brook before moving to Manasquan in 1992.

Neil was a graduate of Bound Brook High School, attended Gettysburg College, and served in the U.S. Army Infantry during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of the Bound Brook Chamber of Commerce, Somerset County 200 Club, as well as the Republican Clubs of Bound Brook and Manasquan.

Mr. Carman was an avid boater and fisherman, who was proud of his many fishing awards. He was admired by many who shared his great love and respect for the ocean.

Prior to retirement, Neil was co-owner and operator of the Bound Brook Laundry and Dry Cleaners, a family business.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Brubaker Carman, and his children Dean and wife Donna of Branchburg, Doug and his wife Pamela of Palm Beach Shores, Fla., Dennis of Miami Beach, Fla., and David and his wife Andrea of Branchburg.

Neil was very proud of his five grandsons, Devin, Dane, Dylan, Dawson, Daniel, and his only granddaughter, Emma. His brother Glenn and wife Elaine of Scotch Plains, are parents of nieces Kaitlin and Julianne.

All arrangements were private.

Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

John A. Quinlan

Clarksville, Tenn. resident Chief Warrant Officer 3 John A. Quinlan, who passed suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 18, while doing what he loved, serving our country in Afghanistan as a Special Operations “Nightstalker” Chinook helicopter pilot. He leaves behind many loved ones, including his parents in Bradley Beach, and considered the shore town his home.

He was 36 years old.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Quinlan graduated Baltimore County Dulaney High School in 1987 and enlisted in the U.S. Marines after high school. He finished Marine Boot Camp and was trained as an Avionics specialist on Harrier jump sets, became a load master for C130 Hercules cargo plane, and was then commissioned as a Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army after 10 years in the Marines.

He also trained as a Chinook pilot at Fort Rucker in Alabama, before transferring to the 160th Special Forces Aviation Regiment as an instructor pilot.

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Quinlan served in very war since 1990, five in all, including three tours in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq, and completed 18 years of military service. He was featured on the 2002 Dateline program about the “first wave” of Operation Anaconda.

He loved all things Irish, his antique Toyota Landcruiser, and was a wonderful husband, father, son, and brother.

We were so lucky to have him for 36 years.

He leaves behind a beautiful family, his wife Julie and three daughters, Keely, Maddy, and Erin, of Clarksville, Tenn., parents Robert J. Quinlan [U.S. Army Major retired] and Kathleen T. Quinlan of Bradley Beach, grandmother Mary Quinlan of Eatontown, and sister and brother-in-law Susan and Greg Ripke of Seymour, Conn., as well as many nieces and nephews.

A patriot, Chief Warrant Officer Quinlan 3 will be laid to rest in Arlington National cemetery in Washington, D.C. next week.

Monday, Feb. 26, would have been his 37th birthday.

Thomas J. McBride

Spring Lake resident Thomas J. ‘Mac’ McBride passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

He was 86 years old.

He was born in Hoboken at home on either July 4th or July 5th. Tom was never sure of his exact birth date since his young Irish immigrant parents did not register his birth until sometime later. By that time, neither his parents nor the midwife could remember the exact day.

Tom attended Sacred Heart Grammar School and St. Aloysius High School in Jersey City. At St. Aloysius, he earned four varsity letters, two earned in basketball and two in baseball.

Tom reported for duty in the Air Force for World War II in July of 1942. Mac was a radio operator on the B-17s and B-25s among others. He made many tours of both the European and North African Campaigns. While in the Air Corps, he was a member of three Air Force basketball teams.

He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon; the European-African-Middle Western Ribbon; the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with a Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Air Corps in November of 1945, he married his wife Frances Mitchell McBride. They were married for 61 years before her death last May.

Thomas held a position as an electronic engineer at Fort Monmouth. In the fall of 1959, Thomas was hailed as a hero while on a work assignment in Greenland. He guided a bus and 19 men to safety in a blinding snow storm by walking in front of the bus and yelling directions for more than six hours.

Everyone who knew Thomas knew what a huge sports fan he was. He spent many, many years coaching both basketball and baseball. Tom was commended as Coach of the Year by the Asbury Park Press in 1964. He coached St. Catharine’s Basketball team for 10 years. He is also credited with starting the Biddy Basketball Program at St. Catharine’s Grammar School. He was also director of the CYO of St. Catharine’s for 6 years. The school won several major shore tournaments during his tenure as coach. Tom also coached Little League Baseball for Spring Lake Heights for seven years and was honored in 2001 for being one of the original crew that helped renovate the Spring Lake Heights Ball Field.

Thomas was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus; the Holy Name Society and the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. His bigger than life figure, his very loving generous nature and his tremendous sense of humor will be sorely missed by his family.

He was predeceased by his wife Frances and his daughter Joan Marie McBride Strohmenger. He leaves behind his children; Carole Digiacomo of Spring Lake Hts.; Thomas and Elaine McBride of Spring Lake; Francie and Joel Hurwit of Canoga Park, Calif.; Patty and Dick Burrus of Spring Lake; and Kathy and Peter Caughey of Spring Lake Heights.

Thomas was affectionately known as ‘Apple Pa’ to his 12 grandchildren; Stephen Strohmenger and his wife Stacey; Thomas Strohmenger and his wife Rachel; Kelli Digiacomo; Joan Marie Hurwit; Christina Digiacomo; Carly Burrus; Megan Caughey; Ivy Hurwit; Connor Burrus; Matthew Caughey; Justin Burrus and Bridget Burrus and recently his great-grandchild Braden Thomas Strohmenger. Thomas was also survived by his loving and caring sister-in-law Thelma Walraven.

Apple we love you. “See you later alligator.”

Visiting will be Friday Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd. in Wall.

A mass will be offered Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Church in Spring Lake.

Burial will follow at St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.

In Lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the Knights of Columbus Lodge # 5611, P.O. Box 51, Spring Lake, NJ 07762.

Wesley V. Banse, Jr.

Voorhees resident Wesley Vernon Banse, Jr., formerly of Manasquan, died Tuesday, Feb. 6 at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa.

He was 63 years old.

A graduate of Sterling High School, Class of 1962, Mr. Banse received his bachelor’s of science degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, after serving four years in the U.S. Navy.

He taught at Sterling High School and also owned and operated Triangle Moving Company for many years. For approximately 30 years, he was associated with the Wayne Bommer Plumbing Co. of Laurel Springs.

Mr. Banse was a member of New Life Church of Voorhees, where he served in the music ministry. He was also an avid golfer.

He was predeceased by his mother, Grace Fortune Banse. Mr. Banse is survived by his wife, Linda L. Hartley Banse; son, Joseph and his wife, Pam Banse; daughter, Julia and her husband, Jeremy MacFarland, and Kathleen Kieper; grandchildren, Danielle, Matt, Jackson and Tatum; father, Lt. Col. [Ret.] Wesley Banse Sr.; sister, Carole Doyon; brother, Glen Banse, and two nieces and two nephews.

Family and friends were invited to attend his visitation with the family on Friday, Feb. 9. The funeral service was held at Eugene J. Zale Funeral Home in Stratford. Burial and graveside service was held on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to New Life Church Building Fund, 31 Chippenham Drive, Voorhees, NJ 08043.

Mary T. O’Dowd

Spring Lake Heights resident Mary T. O’Dowd died Thursday, Feb. 21 at her home.

She was 76 years old.

A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., she came to Spring Lake Heights in 1989, where she was a graduate of St. Angela Hall in Brooklyn. Mrs. O’Dowd was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, and volunteered with the parish hospital ministry at Jersey Shore Medical Center. She was also a volunteer at the VNA [Visiting Nurse Association] Thrift Shop in Manasquan.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jude E. O’Dowd and her son, Jude P. O’Dowd.

She is survived by her sons, Stephen P. O’Dowd and his wife Carmel, Brian P. O’Dowd and his wife Ann, and Thomas P. O’Dowd and his wife Valerie; her daughter-in-law Nancy O’Dowd Kreiser; and her grandchildren, Ryan, Sean, Katie, Arielle, Kristen, Kevin, Breanne, Michael, Kelsey and Megan.

She also leaves behind her brothers, John and Patrick Malloy, and her sister Peggy McGreal.

Visitation was held Friday, Feb. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral from the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall was held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 8:30 a.m.

A mass was held at St. Margaret’s Church in Spring Lake at 9:30 a.m., followed by committal at St. Catharine’s cemetery in Sea Girt.
