Philip Musso

Philip A. Musso, 86, of Mountainside died Feb. 22 in Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Born in New York City, Mr. Musso lived in Mountainside for 32 years. He was a tool and die maker for Pabst Engineering Equipment Co., Elizabeth, for 40 years before retiring in 1994. Mr. Musso was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a musician for many years. Mr. Musso played the saxophone, clarinet and flute, and was a member of the American Federation of Musicians Local 151 of Elizabeth.

Surviving are his wife, Joan; a daughter, Barbara Donovan; a son, Robert; a stepdaughter, Lorene Szelag; a sister, Mae McMahon; two brothers, Frank and Joseph, and nine grandchildren.

Emeterio Rueda

Emeterio L. Rueda, 87, of Springfield died Feb. 20 in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center.

Born in Cuba, Mr. Rueda came to the United States in 1963 and settled in Springfield. He was an architect for the Presbyterian Board of Missions in New York City for 25 years before retiring in 1988. Mr. Rueda received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Havana in Cuba in 1950.

He was a former member of the Lions Club of Cardenas, Cuba, and a former trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield. Mr. Rueda also belonged to the Vailsburg Camera Club of Springfield and the Cuban Architect Association of Miami, Fla.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Yolanda M.; a daughter, Yolanda R. Mauriz; two sons, Emet and Enrique L.; a sister, Maria Teresa Fernandez, and six grandchildren.

Martin Gordon

Martin Gordon, 86, of Avon, formerly of Mountainside, died Feb. 23 at home.

Born in Newark, Mr. Gordon lived in Mountainside before moving to Avon several years ago. He was an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Co., Springfield, before retiring many years ago. Mr. Gordon received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He was a member of the Chartered Life Underwriters. Mr. Gordon was a black belt in karate.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Lenore; two daughters, Marilyn Kogan and Barbara Feeley; a sister, Ann Miller, and three grandchildren.

Karen DePiano

Karen DePiano, 56, of Springfield died Feb. 28 in the Compassionate Care Hospice, Dover.

Born in Newark, Mrs. DePiano lived in Springfield for 13 years. She was a bookkeeper and secretary with DePiano Landscaping, Springfield, a family-owned business, for many years.

Surviving are her husband, John; two stepdaughters, Lisa Pravato and Sharon DePiano; her mother, Mildred Caponegro; a sister, Georgiann Caponegro; two brothers, Joseph and Gregory Caponegro; and two grandchildren.

Mario Formichella

Mario A. Formichella, 77, of Summit, a retired Summit police chief, died March 7 in the Berkeley Heights Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Formichella was the chief of police for the Summit Police Department from 1986 until his retirement in 1993. During his 42-year career, he served as sergeant, head of the traffic division, lieutenant and deputy chief, before being sworn in as chief of police, a position he held for seven years.

Mr. Formichella was a member and past president of the Union County Police Chief’s Association , past president and past state delegate of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association No. 55 in Summit as well as state delegate of the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association. In addition, he was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Honor League of New Jersey. Mr. Formichella also was a member and past president of the Summit Lions Club and a former member of the Summit Chapter of UNICO International. He served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are three brothers, Michael, Frank and Anthony, and three sisters, Rose Franco, Elizabeth Daugherty and Carmela Parks.

Helen Krohn

Helen Krohn, 95, of Summit died March 4 in the Spring Meadow Assisted Living, Summit.

Born in Austria, Mrs. Krohn lived in Elizabeth and Whiting before moving to Summit four years ago. She was a school crossing guard in Elizabeth and a secretary for Prudential Insurance Co., Newark.

Surviving are a son, Dr. George Schilling; a daughter, Connie Guida; a brother, Rudolph Graf; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Neumark

Evelyn Neumark of Margate, formerly of Springfield, died March 9 in Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point.

Born in Ballybofey, County Donegal, Ireland, Mrs. Neumark lived in Atlantic City, Ventnor, Cranford and Springfield before moving to Margate in 1986. She worked in the business office of Union County College, Cranford.

Surviving are a son, Victor; a daughter, Christine Senoski; and four grandchildren.

Ida Solkoff

Ida Solkoff, 91, of Summit, formerly of Springfield, died March 10 in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Solkoff lived in Springfield for 46 years before moving to Summit two years ago. She was a bookkeeper at Sandler and Worth Carpets, Springfield, before retiring in 1987. Earlier, Mrs. Solkoff was a legal secretary in New York City. She was a member of the Deborah Hospital Foundation in Browns Mills and treasurer of the Springfield Senior League.

Surviving are a daughter, Marcia Eskin, and a grandchild.

Mary Strong

Mary Johnston Sutherland Strong, 82, of Westwood, Mass., formerly of Summit, died on Feb. 26.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Strong, whose maternal grandfather, Hewlett A. Hall, a lawyer, served briefly as attorney general of the state of Georgia, moved to Summit in 1956, where she lived before moving to Massachusetts in 1994. She was active in community affairs in Summit. Mrs. Strong served as chairperson of the Junior League of Summit and, with her husband, Robert Livingston Strong, helped to found the Summit Area Public Foundation.

Mrs. Strong founded the Citizens Committee on Biomedical Ethics, now known as New Jersey Health Decisions. Similar groups throughout the United States were inspired by its example, and she was instrumental in establishing the New York Citizens Committee on Health Care Decisions. Mrs. Strong’s work in the field led to her appointment by Gov. Thomas Kean of New Jersey to the Governor’s Council on Biomedical Ethics. In 1987, the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey honored her with its annual Citizens Award.

She served for many years on the board of The Fund for New Jersey and, until her death, was on the board of the Charlotte Palmer Phillips Foundation. Also surviving are a son, William S. Strong; two sisters, Margaret S. Coleman and Sarah S. Stoner; and two grandchildren.

Dorothy Sandargus

Dorothy W. Sandargus, 87, of Mountainside died Feb. 24 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Sandargus lived in Irvington before moving to Mountainside in 1970. She was a member of the Polish Woman’s Alliance Group 601, Irvington.

Surviving are two daughters, Diane Weiss and Barbara Rudolph; a brother, Fred Wisniewski; and a grandchild.

Agnes Elzer

Agnes Ann Elzer, 89, of Summit died March 10 in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center, Berkeley Heights.

Born in Staten Island, Mrs. Elzer lived in Summit for many years. She was a salesperson at Wanamaker’s in New York City during the 1940s. Mrs. Elzer was a member of the Summit League and the 60-Plus Club of St. Teresa of Avila Church, Summit.

Surviving are two daughters, Judyth Elzer and Susan Saxman; a sister, Julia Stanley; and a grandchild.

Carole Schachter

Carole Schachter, 76, of Springfield died March 14 at home.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Schachter lived in Hillside and Union before moving to Springfield in 1968. She was a substitute secretary with the Millburn and Berkeley Heights school districts for 11 years before retiring last year. Earlier, Mrs. Schachter was a legal secretary for Stern & Weiss, Maplewood, for 49 years. She was a member of the Ruth Estrin Goldberg Society of Newark and the Renaissance Group of Shar’rey Shalom, Springfield.

Surviving are two daughters, Sheila Smulyan and Michele Stein, and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth Steinberg

Elizabeth Steinberg, 80, of Mountainside died March 14 in the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division.

Born in Orange, Mrs. Steinberg lived in Mountainside for most of her life.

Kathleen Hochadel

Kathleen Hochadel, 84, of Mountainside, formerly of Union, co-owner of a Union real estate agency, died March 15 at home.

Born in Orting, Wash., Mrs. Hochadel lived in Union before moving to Mountainside 21 years ago. With her husband of 61 years, Martin, she was co-owner and operator of Martin H. Hochadel Agency, Union, where she was responsible for the residential real estate division. Mrs. Hochadel was affiliated with the Daughters of the Nile, a Shriners affiliate, in Livingston, and both the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Michael Kelly Post in Union.

Also surviving are a son, Martin; two daughters, Suzanne Hochadel and Debbie Wendel; a brother, Duane Arndt; two sisters, Dee Parrish and Pat Welsh; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Anna Wexler

Anna Wexler, 85, of Springfield died March 15 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Wexler lived in Springfield for 50 years. She was a registered nurse working for Dr. Eugene Parsonet, Dr. Max Danzis, Dr. E. Klosk and Dr. David Grossman during the 1960s. Mrs. Wexler received a registered nursing degree from the Newark Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing in 1942. She then enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. Mrs. Wexler initially was assigned to the 3099th Hospital Evacuation Group and later to the 218th Hospital Ship Group, Army Hospital Ship Dogwood, based in Charleston, S.C.

Her service included eight transatlantic convoy crossings from the United States to England and North Africa, where her hospital group cared for Allied casualties and prisoners of wars; the Pacific Theater; the Liberation of the Philippines; and smaller islands in New Guinea. Mrs. Wexler was a member of the American Red Cross Hadassah and the Jewish War Veterans, all in Springfield. She also was a Girl Scout troop leader in Springfield.

Surviving are a daughter, Roberta Ehrlich; a son, Mark; a sister, Miriam Wallman; a brother, Harry Abramowitz; and two grandchildren.

Emily Murgia

Emily Josephine Murgia, 79, of Roselle died Feb. 12 in Clara Maass Continuing Care Center, Belleville.

Born in Elizabeth, Mrs. Murgia lived in Roselle for many years.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph A.; a sister, Jean Urban, and two brothers, Edward and Thomas Oleuniczak.

Ethel Wiley

Ethel Wiley, 93, of Rahway died Feb. 19 in the Genesis ElderCare Center, Westfield.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Wiley lived in California, Baltimore, Md., and Rye, N.Y., before moving to Rahway many years ago. She was a member of the Women’s Association and served as a deacon, both with the Second Presbyterian Church of Rahway.

Yolanda Harrison

Yolanda Harrison, 87, of Linden died Feb. 19 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.

Born in Italy, Mrs. Harrison lived in France before coming to Linden in 1945. She was a seamstress for Hilton Clothing Manufacturing Co., Linden, for many years.

Surviving is a daughter, Annita Kellar.

Susan Sakach

Susan Sakach, 79, a lifelong resident of Linden, died Feb. 19 at home.

Miss Sakach was a seamstress for Arthur’s Dress Shop, Linden, for 25 years before retiring in 1975.

Surviving are two sisters, Anna Stefura and Elizabeth Conway, and three brothers, Andrew, Edward and John.
