Andorfa Matera

Andorfa Matera, 81, of Union died March 2 in the Brother Bonaventure Home, Elizabeth.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Matera lived in Union most of her life.

Surviving is her husband of 48 years, Peter.

Gloria Ahumada

Gloria E. Ahumada, 82, of Union died March 7 in the Cranford Health and Extended Care.

Born in Colombia, Mrs. Ahumada settled in North Bergen in 1988 and moved to Union two years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Gloria Jaramillo; two sons, Alfredo and Manuel S. Varela; three sisters, a brother, 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John Orban

John R. Orban, 89, a lifelong resident of Hillside, died March 3 in Union Hospital.

Mr. Orban was an iron worker for the District Council Ironworkers of Springfield before retiring. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Mr. Orban played semi-professional baseball with the former New York Giants farm team in Delaware.

Surviving are a sister, Frances Burgess, and a brother, Henry A.

Kathleen Hochadel

Kathleen Hochadel, 84, of Mountainside, formerly of Union, co-owner of a Union real estate agency, died March 15 at home.

Born in Orting, Wash., Mrs. Hochadel lived in Union before moving to Mountainside 21 years ago. She was co-owner and operator of the Martin H. Hochadel Agency, Union, along with her husband of 61 years, where she was responsible for the residential real estate division. Mrs. Hochadel was affiliated with the Daughters of the Nile, a Shriners affiliate, in Livingston, and both the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Union.

Also surviving are a son, Martin; two daughters, Suzanne Hochadel and Debbie Wendel; a brother, Duane Arndt; two sisters, Dee Parrish and Pat Welsh; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

John Sloan

John Sloan, 65, of Hillside died March 9 at home.

Born in Newark, Mr. Sloan lived in Belleville before moving to Hillside 34 years ago. He worked for Drake’s Bakeries, Wayne, as a tractor-trailer driver for 36 years before retiring in 2003. Mr. Sloan was a member of the Teamsters Local 194 and the Knights of Columbus Hillside Council.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Margaret; a son, Christopher J.; a sister, Margaret Sloan, and two grandchildren.

Antonia Ascolese

Antonia Ascolese, 84, of Kenilworth died March 9 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Canosa di Puglia, Italy, Mrs. Ascolese came to the United States in 1956 and lived in Bayonne before moving to Kenilworth many years ago. She owned and operated Antoinette’s Tailoring and alterations, Bayonne, for many years before retiring in 1988.

Surviving are three daughters, Romilda Heatter, Lidia Guardino and Isabella Nazzaro; a son, Gerardo, and seven grandchildren.

Joseph Beviano

Joseph W. Beviano II, 40, of Kenilworth died March 10 at home.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Beviano lived in Linden for 36 years before moving to Kenilworth. He was a road department supervisor with the Scotch Plains Public Works Department, where he worked for 18 years. Mr. Beviano also was a manager at Hogs and Heifers in New York City for six years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Kenilworth Council.

Surviving are his wife, Sandra; a son, Joseph Winston III; a stepson, Kevin Rodriguez; his mother, Carol Beviano, and two sisters, Carly Beviano and Alissa Yanchitis.

Adele Breynock

Adele Breynock, 89, of Hillside died March 10 at home.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Breynock lived in Irvington before moving to Hillside 35 years ago. She was a medical secretary for many years before retiring.

Surviving are a daughter, Dorothy, and a sister, Helen Okarma.

Agnes Hierl

Agnes Hierl, 100, of Union died March 9 in the Hope Hospice-Father Hudson House in Elizabeth.

Born in Germany, Mrs. Hierl lived in Irvington before moving to Union 23 years ago. She was a member of the Rosary Society and the Rainbow Club, both at St. Joseph’s Church, Maplewood. Mrs. Hierl also belonged to the Rosary Society, the Mother’s Guild, bingo and Senior Citizens, all of St. Leo’s Church, Irvington. She celebrated her 100th birthday last July 19.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Dean and Agnes Melahn; two sons, Anton Joseph and Peter K.; a sister, Theresa Maurer; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Sophia Poempner

Sophia E. “Sally” Poempner, 93, of Kenilworth died March 8 at home.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Poempner lived in Kenilworth since 1942. She was an assembler-supervisor at RCA Corp., Harrison, for 12 years before retiring many years ago. Mrs. Poempner was one of the first members of St. Theresa’s Parish, Kenilworth. She volunteered at Thursday bingo for 30 years. Mrs. Poempner also served as a Girl Scout leader in Kenilworth and organized bus rides to Atlantic City for Kenilworth senior citizens for 15 years.

Surviving are her husband of 75 years, Leslie; a daughter, Lynne, and three grandchildren.

Maria Raimondi

Maria “Mae” Raimondi, 82, of Kenilworth died March 8 in Union Hospital.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Raimondi lived in Orange and Florham Park before moving to Kenilworth 25 years ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Amelia Talvecchia and Vera; a brother, Joseph Dotoli, and four grandchildren.

Frank Turner

Frank E. Turner, 73, of Kenilworth died March 10 in Union Hospital.

Born in Newark, Mr. Turner lived in Kenilworth for 43 years. He was a fuel burner technician for Mitchell Supreme, Orange, for 35 years before retiring in 1993. Mr. Turner was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He served with the Signal Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia; three sons, Frank D., Daniel J. and Christopher A.; two brothers, Karl Turner and Joseph Nalio, and six grandchildren.

Joseph T. Dino

Joseph T. Dino, 82, of Hillside died March 10 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.

Born in Newark, Mr. Dino lived in Hillside for 41 years. He was a machinist for Red Devil Tools, Union, for 35 years before retiring 28 years ago. Mr. Dino was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans in Elizabeth and the Military order of the Purple Heart, Union County Chapter 28, Cranford.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph Jr. and Wayne; a daughter, Sharon Wright; a sister, Grace Tamarra; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Violet Rodwell

Violet Rodwell, 96, of Union died March 10 in Union Hospital.

Born in Newark, Miss Rodwell lived in Irvington before moving to Union seven years ago. She was a key punch operator for Hatfield Wire, Hillside, before retiring. Miss Rodwell was a member of the Seniors Club of Irvington.

Louis Schmidt

Louis C. Schmidt, 75, a lifelong resident of Union, died March 10 in Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark.

Mr. Schmidt was an insurance agent and owner of Louis A. Schmidt Insurance Co., Union. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Schmidt received a presidential appointment as a midshipman in 1952. He was a member of the Union Exchange Club and the Knights of Columbus Council 4504, both of Union.

Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Judith; a son, Louis Jr.; three daughters, Karen Ketterer, Pamela Antonelli and Cynthia DelSantro, and six grandchildren.

Inez Griffiths

Inez A. Griffiths, 81, of the Vauxhall section of Union, died March 11 in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.

Born in Jamaica, Mrs. Griffiths lived in East Orange before moving to Vauxhall several months ago. She was a self-employed nursing assistant in Essex County for many years before retiring.

Surviving are five sons, Carl, Raymond, Eric, Glaston and Anthony; three daughters, Elaine White, Joyce Hagymasi and Angela Johnson; a brother, Sylvester Brown; three sisters, Elma Blackman and Ruby Fagan; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Anna Marie Daley

Anna Marie Daley, 79, a lifelong resident of Roselle Park, died March 13 in Union Hospital.

Mrs. Daley was born in Elizabeth. She worked for the National Telephone Directory Corp., Union and Somerset, for seven years before retiring in 1992. Earlier, Mrs. Daley was a secretary for Singer Manufacturing Co., Elizabeth, for 32 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Ann Lingenfelter, and a sister, Irene Moore.

Louis Gonzalez

Louis Gonzalez, 71, of Roselle Park died March 11 at home.

Born in Newark, Mr. Gonzalez moved to Roselle Park 40 years ago. He was a plummer for the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange for 21 years before retiring five years ago. Earlier, Mr. Gonzalez was a plumber for Bornstein and Son, Irvington, for 11 years.

Surviving are four sons, John, Richard, Robert and Gregory; a sister, Terry Rodriguez, and a grandchild.

Barbara Vesselli

Barbara Vesselli, 84, of Kenilworth died March 14 in the Clark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Vesselli lived in Kenilworth since 1960. She was a seamstress with Gino’s, Roselle, for 15 years before retiring 30 years ago. Mrs. Vesselli was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union in New York City.

Surviving are her husband, Ernest; two sons, Robert P. Sr. and Al; a sister, Ann De Stasio, and two grandchildren.

Eugenia Polnik

Eugenia A. Polnik, 98, of Union died March 13 in the Cornell Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Union.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Polnik moved to Union in 1937.

Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn Klem; a sister, Emily Lemish, and four grandchildren.
